LIFESTYLE LETTER

Welcome to December!

December 2022 PUBLISHER

Jeff Herr | jeff.herr@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Megan Ewing | Megan.ewing@citylifestyle.com

Hearty holiday greetings to you and your circle of friends and family! December packs a pile of amazing things, from holiday lights and heavenly choirs to tamale festivals and crooners like Harry Connick, Jr. It's also the time of year when we see the best of ourselves shine through: graceful and impactful giving. We recently learned of a $1 million donation from the estate of the late Marilyn Cook to the Oro Valley Chamber Foundation for local scholarships and charitable giving. The Long Realty Cares Foundation also recently marked 20 years that included $3.5 million contributed to 300-plus local non-profits of all sizes. And the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona and its partners have contributed $630,000 to their non-profit solar project. The funds support solar installations for local non-profit organizations including Youth On Their Own and the Sonoran Glass School. Closer to home we learned that Tucson-based Outdoor Adventures for Wounded Veterans received an anonymous donation of $6,000 to help take more vets to the Sea of Cortez to chase fish. And relax in the sun. We enjoyed meeting them for our July issue: https://citylifestyle.com/ catalinafoothills/issues/2022-06 These are just a few examples of kindness and caring from local people and businesses. These are kind acts that really come from the heart of December. We have so much to be thankful for at this time of year. And as our regular readers know, we profile non-profit local groups in every issue with the hope that important community efforts connect with the people and resources needed to carry out good works. So please, share with us the charitable groups that you support. Email to me at jeff.herr@citylifestyle.com. JEFF HERR, PUBLISHER @ C ATA L I N A F O OT H I L L S L I F E S T Y L E

Tamale Love

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY SYBIL VELARDE

I met my friend Milagros in the mid-70s. She would make the most incredible tamales and sell them on Sundays after Church. One day during lunch I asked her how and why she decided to make tamales. While attending a Christian retreat, the priest preached that she had to “spread the word of the Lord by visiting with others.” She knew right then how she would. Milagros went back home and asked her mother-inlaw to teach her how to make tamales.

"Milagros and I make tamales together, focusing on the love and passion that goes into making them."

“I add all my love while I make them. Tamales are not just made of ingredients…they need you to pour your heart into making them” she said. Tamales are made of masa, which Is ground corn moistened with water. The wrapping gives the tamale its name, as it comes from the word tamalli, meaning wrapped. The wrapping can come in the form of corn husks or banana leaves. Inside the masa is a filling of tender meats, aromatic spices and carefully chopped vegetables. Tamales were the first dish made from corn in Central America. Although the exact history is not entirely clear, many historians believe that tamales were first made by the Aztecs ten thousand years ago. Tamales were a portable, protein-rich food that Aztec warriors could take into battle. Hunters could also carry them into the field. Tamales were originally cooked over hot ashes in a buried fire. Later, when Spanish conquistadors brought pots and pans, women started steaming the corn-wrapped packages. The Spanish also introduced more flavors, adding meat and lard to the vegetable delights. Milagros and I make tamales together, focusing on the love and passion that goes into making them. Tamales are a staple around the holidays and there are a number of places here locally to sample some of the best flavors. Some of our favorites: Tucson Tamale Company Inspired by family recipes and the different tamales around the world, owners Todd and Sherry transformed the Ancient Latin tradition of Tamale making with an eye on healthier and cleaner ingredients. Today, they continue to make award-winning tamales, spreading joy one handmade tamale at a time. “We are so proud of the tamales we make. We still do it the way Mama Celia taught us. each tamale by hand. We still wrap them in a traditional corn husk (hoja).” Among the favorite tamales they make are the Blue Corn with Calabacitas. Today they have two manufacturing facilities and their tamales are sold in all 50 states and over 6,000 grocery stores. They ship over 16,000 orders throughout the year! Tamales have become a wonderful gift item for special occasions like birthdays, holidays, a birth, or even to friends that are ill or have lost a significant other. And if you are a Hot Sauce Lover, Tucson Tamale sells over 350 different sauces! They also make and sell fresh tortillas. For more information, visit www. tucsontamale.com. El Charro Cafe The hand-made tamales from Carlotta’s Kitchen facility include delicious recipe classics like Fresh Corn, Tomatillo Chicken and Red Chile Beef, as well as newer favorites like the Vegan Chocolate Hazelnut Desert Tamale and Hola Hemp line of vegan tamales made with natural hemp seeds and other superfoods. Carlotta loves that her Tamales are the perfect food to go mobile, as they can be kept frozen until ready to heat and eat. They are gluten-free, made with healthy fats and come individually wrapped to hand out to friends and neighbors. At Sybil’s Kitchen Tamales Sybil grew up in Lima, Peru where tamales are the best typical breakfast you can have! You can still find the “tamaleras” steaming their tamales on the street on big, deep cast iron pots. “We like to serve the tamales topped with ‘salsa de cebollas’ (pickled red onions with aji chile, lime juice and a little olive oil).” Sybil’s tamales are made from scratch with the best organic ingredients. When assembling them, they are stuffed with lots of meat filling and just enough masa. Learn more at www.atsybilskitchen.com/order-online.

INGREDIENTS Blondie • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour • 2 tsp baking powder • 1 tsp salt • 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter • 2 cups light brown sugar • 2 large eggs • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Peanut Brittle • 4 cups roasted unsalted peanuts • 2 cups sugar • 1/4 cup honey • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter • 1/2 cup cream • 1 1/2 cups 1 1/2- wide thin twisted pretzel, coarsely crushed

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350F. Line baking pan with parchment paper, leaving a 1” overhang on long sides of pan. Whisk flour, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl, set aside. Stir butter in a medium skillet over medium heat until browned bits form at bottom of pan, 7-8 minutes. Transfer to a medium bowl. Add brown sugar. Using an electric mixer, beat until well combined and mixture resembles wet sand, 2-3 minutes. Add eggs and vanilla. Beat until fluffy and well combined, about 2 minutes. Add dry ingredients. Beat until smooth (batter will be thick). Using a spatula, evenly spread batter in the prepared pan. Bake blondie until golden brown, edges pull away from sides of the pan and a tester inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs attached, 20-25 minutes. Let cool completely in pan on wire rack. Peanut-Pretzel Caramel Preheat oven to 350F Line rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Spread peanuts over sheet in an even layer. Bake, stirring frequently, until golden brown and fragrant, 5-7 minutes. Set aside. Stir sugar and 1/2 cup water in a large saucepan over medium-low heat until sugar dissolves. Increase heat, boil without stirring, occasionally swirling pan and brushing down sides with a wet pastry brush, until caramel is deep amber, 12-15 minutes. Add honey, return to a boil, stirring often, about 1 minute longer. Add butter; stir until blended. Add cream (mixture will bubble vigorously) and whisk until smooth. Stir in peanuts and pretzels. Pour peanut-pretzel caramel over cooled blondie. Chill until cool, about 30 minutes. Run a knife around short sides of pan to release blondie. Using parchment paper overhang, lift from pan. Cut lengthwise into 4 strips. Cut each strip crosswise into 10 bars.

Decorating for the Holidays: Southwest Style THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS UPON US, AND IT'S TIME TO DECORATE!

ARTICLE BY ANNA MAYNARD

One of the most beautiful aspects of Arizona is the influence that Mexican culture has on our everyday life. With the holiday season upon us, it comes as no surprise that our holiday decorations carry on that influence. If you’re searching for traditional decorations with rich history, look no further than Zocalo. Owned by mother-daughter duo Jan Westenborg and Jill D’Aniello, Zocalo houses a beautiful collection of holiday items sourced directly from artisans in Mexico. They purchased Zocalo in 2018 in order to showcase traditional Mexican folk art directly from its source. Her love of Mexican culture stems from her experience studying abroad, and she frequently travels to Mexico in search of new artists and artwork. “She has such a passion for the people and the culture,” D’Aniello, her daughter, said. She estimates they grow around 25,000 poinsettias for the holiday season, which are in full bloom and ready to purchase. Poinsettias, called La Flor de Nochebuena in Mexico, are a symbol of success and good cheer.

Westenborg shared the cultural significance of their most commonly sought-after holiday decorations. One of their most popular holiday items are the ornate tin-punch Christmas trees. Originally produced in San Miguel de Allende, Zocalo has the largest selection in Arizona. The trees are lit from within, allowing the handcrafted designs and colored marbles to shine. Catholicism is the dominant faith in Mexico, and Nativity scenes in a variety of artistic styles are easily found. The religious aspect of Christmas stems from the Nativity, which depicts the birth of Jesus in the manger. From small scenes in shadow boxes to an award-winning clay set from the state of Veracruz, the Nativity scene in all its forms is a frequently sought-after item. Hanging chile peppers is another sign that the holiday season is approaching, and another frequently seen decoration. Chile peppers are traditionally gathered in Mexico during the onset of the winter months, and the bountiful harvest on display has evolved into another recognizable

decoration for the holidays. A modern twist on this tradition is to hang chileshaped string lights! What Zocalo is most known for, however, are its poinsettias. These red (and white, and pink!) flowers were brought to America in the 19th century by Joel Poinsett, the first U.S. Minister of Mexico, according to Westenborg. She estimates they grow around 25,000 poinsettias for the holiday season, which are in full bloom and ready to purchase. Poinsettias, called La Flor de Nochebuena in Mexico, are a symbol of success and good cheer. Westenborg and D’Aniello’s appreciation for Mexican culture is evident in the level of care they take in sourcing authentic pieces directly from the place these traditions originate. Each creation is tagged with the location in Mexico that it comes from, as well as the artist who produces it. Zocalo is offering a free Christmas cactus with a $50 purchase, another item traditionally given as a gift during the holidays.

Tin-punched Christmas trees from San Miguel de Allende.

The artist behind this Nativity scene was recognized by the Mexican government as a celebration of art.

Chile peppers are harvested during the winter, and can be found hanging in bunches during the holiday season.

These hand-beaded and hand-painted tree ornaments take hours of skilled craftsmanship. D ECEMB ER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/CATA L I N AF O OT HI L L S

M UST SE E | EVENT PL AN NI NG + S E RVI CE S

There are those who throw a swell party. And then there are those who could teach a master class in entertaining. These three Tucson women fall in the latter category. Cecile Follansbee, Coppélia Samaha and Jeannette Segel are far more than social doyens and party givers, they are masterminds of how to create a party that elicits just the right reaction from their guests. Whether it’s a chic soiree for 10 in their home, a festive reception for 40, or chairing a charity gala for 500, they get it. Better than anyone. And as we enter the holiday season, we were lucky enough to have them share some tips on how to make any seasonable gathering special, merry and bright!

FINISH THIS SENTENCE. I BELIEVE THE 3 MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENTS OF ANY SUCCESSFUL PARTY ARE________. CF: Have a reason or theme or purpose for the event. Offer something that will be different and unique -- entertainment, speaker, artist? Keep the size of the group personable and purposeful. CS: Invite the right people. Make it unforgettable by having the most stunning decorations, food and music playing for guests. I always request my guests dress to impress! JS: A congenial group of guests, plenty of tasty food and a large supply of wine and spirits. HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR PERSONAL ENTERTAINING STYLE? CF: Casual elegance, joyous, fun CS: Elegant, that’s my personal style JS: My favorite is informal and outdoors

Jeannette Segel

ARE YOU A DIY HOSTESS, OR DO YOU UTILIZE EXTERNAL VENDORS, I.E. CATERERS, FLORIST AND/OR PARTY PLANNERS? CF: Depends, but for larger groups, I utilize external vendors CS: I do absolutely everything, including cooking and decorating. I only hire the Symphony for a memorable Christmas party. Our Concertmaster Laure Roth chooses and plays her favorite symphonic pieces. She makes our celebrations unforgettable. JS: It's DIY definitely for a dinner party but I always use a caterer for larger parties. Generally, I will put together my own floral arrangements. DID YOU HAVE A ROLE MODEL WHO INFLUENCED YOU IN DEVELOPING YOUR EVENT PLANNING SELF-CONFIDENCE AND EXPERTISE? CF: Not really, I just learned from a broad sample of friends, magazines, social media, etc. CS: My mom, she was an elegant lady and had the most beautiful way of entertaining. JS: A number of my friends are my role models. They are incredible in the kitchen and great organizers. These talented and gifted desert hostesses set the bar high for entertaining any time of year. Allow them to inspire you this holiday season! CONTINUED >

C H A R I T Y S P OT L I G H T YEAR-END GIVING – SO MANY OPTIONS! ARTICLE BY STEPHEN BROWNING

December is always a big month for charitable organizations and nonprofits nationwide. Up to 30% or more of their annual income can come from gifts received during this period, so you can understand why you are being inundated with urgent requests and pitches all designed to earn your support! There are many ways to give. Here’s a quick sampling of options, some of which may be new to you. One quick piece of advice that any of us who have worked in the field will tell you -- speak with your financial planner, C.P.A. or tax preparer to get the latest read on current tax regulations affecting your gift.

F IN A N CIA L BU Z Z | LOCA L S E RVI CE S

DIRECT GIFTS Save yourself a stamp, do it online via their website or via your own bank payables system. And don’t forget sustaining gifts, usually taken monthly from your checking account or credit card.

PLANNED GIFTS So many reasons to consider this option. And so many ways to do it! Leave a legacy when you’re gone. The impact can be incalculable.

WORKPLACE GIVING Still working? Check with your HR or Accounting Department about paycheck deductions.

QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTIONS (QCD) Distributions from your IRA or Retirement Account.

SECURITIES (STOCKS OR BONDS) May be able to be sent electronically from your broker directly to the charity. Your deductible amount will be based on the net proceeds once the asset has been liquidated. And don’t forget those big-ticket tangibles like REAL ESTATE (homes, cabins, lots) and VEHICLES (Cars, Commercial Vehicles, RV’s). Check with the receiving charity first to see if they accept these items. I always tell my friends and family to start thinking about year-end gifts in September, before the onslaught of emails, texts, phone calls and direct mail, starting in late October, or earlier. Charities know your giving patterns, your preferred method of giving and often your preferred focus areas. But it’s up to you to review all of those decisions annually before you give. Instead of making dozens of small gifts to anyone who asks, maybe it’s time to focus on 2-3 organizations that speak to you or have affected your friends or family. Imagine the impact you can have by making a $1000 to one organization vs. the dozens of smaller gifts you may be giving to several others. And take the time to review your charity’s website to get a feel for their priorities and needs, or pick up the phone and give them a call. I guarantee you, you’ll get a call back from a staffer grateful for an opportunity to speak with you! Tucson, and especially foothill residents, are some of the most generous donors in the country. December is a key month to make those gifts count. Take the time to make wise choices. Your largesse will have the power to change lives. Happy Holidays to all! Our Charity Spotlight column is designed to inform you about Tucson’s highly respected 501c-3 organizations. I always recommend potential clients, volunteers and/or donors access further information via the charity’s own website, of via independent watch organizations like GuideStar, Charity Navigator, GreatNonprofits or Charity Watch, all available online.

YOU CAN DIRECT 100% OF YOUR TAX DOLLARS TO A SPECIFIC LOCAL CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS.

The tax-credit program is out there, waiting for you to act. Imagine $800 to a local school or youth group that you care about! Huge impact. And it is a click away. For those who missed it: The Arizona Department of Revenue provides two separate tax credits for individual Arizona taxpayers who make contributions to specific charitable organizations: one for donations to Qualifying Charitable Organizations (QCO) and the second for donations to Qualifying Foster Care Charitable Organizations (QFCO). Individuals making cash donations to these charities may claim these tax credits on their Arizona Personal Income Tax returns. Taxpayers must use the “QCO Code” or “QFCO Code” of certified organizations to claim the tax credits. The maximum credit allowed is $800 for married filing joint filers and $400 for single, heads of household and married filing separate filers. Check out this link! https://azdor. gov/sites/default/files/media/CREDITS_2022_qco.pdf

The City Lifestyle

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
