As winter adventures turn into summer ones, the owners and physical therapists at Sparq Physical Therapy in Castle Rock provide expert advice for managing sore muscles and injuries. “Being in Colorado, there is something for every season and most people partake,” explains Kristine Godsil, co-owner of
“We want to create this environment where you feel comfortable telling us what went well and what didn't.” Sparq and physical therapist specializing in pelvic floor, pediatrics, and orthopedic conditions. Colorado’s glorious setting invites adventure, but injuries often occur while snowboarding and skiing in the winter and hiking and biking in the summer. “In our winter sport set of activities that come with Colorado, like skiing and snowboarding, I certainly see concussions from those injuries,” says Kelsy Rayl, co-owner of Sparq and concussion, vestibular, and orthopedic specialist. “I would say more commonly knees and shoulders, just how they fall and catch themselves. I think hiking is probably more of just an overuse injury.” “And I would say,” Kristine chimes in, “anybody who does prolonged activity, whatever their weak point is, gets revealed.” That’s where Kelsy and Kristine, who hold Doctorates of Physical Therapy, bring their knowledge to assess each patient’s problem areas and
work to provide individualized therapy to help them recover. At Sparq, they ensure they treat the person and not the injury. Kelsy explains their patient-first philosophy: “We were really intentional about how we built our business to make sure we could build time in for people and treat people as a person instead of just a number that came through.” She continues by adding, “I think our specialities too, there are a lot of times that those niches are very vulnerable, like from a pelvic floor standpoint, of course it’s very intimate, and from a concussion standpoint, sometimes they lose a lot of sense of pieces of their identity. So, making them feel comfortable and sharing what works to help them along the way was a big part of our start.” Now in business for almost three years, Kelsy and Kristine have helped many people recover from adventure-related injuries. but muscles are aching, they have foolproof guidance on managing that pain. “Anytime you do a weekend activity or something you don’t do regularly and you’re doing it for a long period, you can always hedge your bets on things like managing your inflammation with ice or overthe-counter medication options, like getting ahead of that, can be useful,” Kristine advises. She explains, “I think a big misnomer of some of the gentle, mobility stuff, especially afterwards, if something is cranky, more often than not, a dynamic stretch or working through it so it’s nice even motions is better than static.” Both women stress how useful massage guns are and how tennis balls penetrate hard-to-reach areas to relieve pain. Speaking of tennis balls, Bowie, their red golden retriever patient liaison, greets patients with a tail wag to ease anxiety and promote the patient-first experience. Their space feels open, comfortable, and trusting, which helps patients struggling with pain to feel safe. “We want to create this environment where you feel comfortable telling us what went well and what didn’t,” Kelsy says. “That way we can keep adjusting.” Adhering to Kelsy and Kristine’s advice ensures people enjoy their summer adventures. Still, if injury should occur, they are ready to guide patients back to health with personalized care, the Sparq way.

SOLSTICE MED S PA
GET READY FOR BEAUTIFUL SUMMER SKIN ARTICLE BY KRISTEN GONZALES PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Summer is in full blast, and the sunshine feels so good. However, more sun means protecting skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Gina Kaufman, nurse practitioner and owner of Solstice Med Spa in Castle Rock, provides expert guidance on skin health throughout the summer months. Regarding sunscreen, Gina explains, “UVB rays are the rays that will burn you. The UVA rays will be the ones that cause signs of aging. Overthe-counter sunscreens are broad-spectrum UVA/UVB because they have some, but almost all of them do not have the proper UVA.”
26
S KIN CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
Without proper protection from UVA rays, people notice sunspots and wrinkles despite actively reapplying sunscreen. She adds, “There is value in having a medical-grade sunscreen because you want the proper UVA protection and protection against environmental pollutants and blue light.” That’s correct, folks. Blue light from computers, phones, and televisions negatively affects skin, too. Gina swears by keeping it simple regarding a healthy skin regimen. “I’m so simplistic with my skin care because you should be,” she says. “The number one thing to put on your face daily is your Vitamin A.” There are over-the-counter or prescription-grade retinol options. “The number two thing to be on is going to be vitamin C,” Gina continues. “The trick is, does your vitamin C need to be medical grade, or can it be over-the-counter? It really needs to be medical-grade, and I’m a big proponent that not everything has to be medical-grade, but there are a few things where it does make a big difference.” The last active ingredient that Gina recommends is niacinamide. This ingredient is a form of Vitamin B3 and can be found standalone or in other products. One major mistake people make is using skincare products together when they shouldn’t. For instance, Gina mentions that using Vitamin A and C together will not work as they cancel each other out. That’s also true when using any acid ingredient
“UVB rays are the rays that will burn you. The UVA rays will be the ones that cause signs of aging.” like alpha-beta hydroxy acids, which cancel out Vitamin A and C. The only acid that doesn’t is hyaluronic, since it works differently from other acids and draws in water. Gina’s most crucial advice for healthy skin is also simple. “A good skin care regimen every day is better than the best inconsistently.”

Garden Guide
a store-bought version from your favorite garden center) helps protect tender leaves. ANNUALS: POPS OF SUMMER COLOR Container gardens and hanging baskets bring life and color to patios, porches, and entryways. To keep them looking lush: • Deadhead blooms regularly to encourage new flowers. • Water deeply and often, especially on hot days. • Design with intent: Think thrillers (a tall, eye-catching center plant), fillers (colorful mid-height blooms), and spillers (trailing vines or flowers that soften the edges). LAWNS: LUSH, GREEN, AND SUMMER-READY • Water deeply to encourage strong roots and help grass handle summer heat. • Mow high: Keep blades at 2–3 inches to reduce stress and prevent weeds. • Address pests early, such as grubs, to avoid long-term damage. • Stay on top of weed control to maintain a manicured look. Castle Rock in summer is nothing short of spectacular—and your garden should be too. With a little love, patience, and local knowhow, you’ll enjoy the fruits (and flowers) of your labor all season long.
Hot summer days and warm, golden evenings have our Castle Rock gardens bursting with life. Tomatoes are ripening into vibrant reds, corn is stretching past your knees, and zucchini? Coming in by the bushel. With a little attention to detail, your garden and landscape can thrive through the season—keeping flowers blooming and produce producing beautifully. VEGETABLES: FEED, PROTECT, AND POLLINATE • Feed Regularly: Vegetables are heavy feeders this time of year. Use an organic fertilizer—compost tea or a fish-based liquid fertilizer works wonders and keeps your garden naturally nourished. • Pollinate Squash: If your squash isn’t setting fruit, it may need a helping hand. Gently pick a male f lower, remove the petals to expose the stamen, and brush it against the pistil of a female f lower. One f lower can pollinate several. • Fight Insects Naturally: A light dusting of diatomaceous earth can deter pests, and homemade insecticidal soap (or
