A nurse for 25 years, with over two decades in emergency medicine, and a more recent addition as a nurse practitioner, Allie Edwards, owner of Renova Medical Aesthetics, is passionate about helping others.

“My goal is to get you to the point where you don’t have to see me as often,” Allie says. “To get to a point where you feel like you again.” “I thrive in organized chaos,” Allie exclaims. “I love it!” Her success in emergency medicine showcases just that, but the administrative burnout proved to be too much. When aesthetics entered her life, followed by training, she opened her own practice, thinking it would be a good side job. “I opened my own space,” Allie explains. “An 88 sq ft room in the back of a hair salon and just thinking that I would do this on the side, and it quickly turned into much more than that.” Despite being overly busy, Allie found a passion for helping people through aesthetics and wanted to create something bigger than herself. Finding a team that was as passionate as she was turned out to be just the thing.

“I wanted to create an environment that I didn’t necessarily get in the hospital,” Allie points out. “Somewhere I could thrive and be a better version of what I was like in the medical field.” With her own place in Castle Rock, a team of eight, and a new buildout for a Plum Creek location, Allie has found her stride. “For a long time, there was aesthetics and skin,” Allie comments. “So we have two pillars, so to speak, and we brought on this new pillar of hormone and wellness.” After seeing patients consistently and getting feedback on how tired they were and whether a skin aesthetic would help, Allie knew there was more to uncover to help people. “Essentially, we’re putting a band-aid on something when the root cause was that they’re tired,” Allie explains. “We started looking more into that. We have hormones our whole entire life, and they’re all over the place, especially in women. We have it from the time we hit puberty to pregnancy and then perimenopause and then after.” Despite significant mental and physical changes when it came to hormones, Allie’s frustration was with lab results that came back in the normal range, but the symptoms were still there. Wanting to understand more about the problems men and women faced as they aged, she discovered that normal wasn’t optimal. “We’ve learned normal range is not optimal,” Allie says. “We are not living in an optimal range, and in order to function optimally, just having normal is not going to cut it. I feel like that for so long women have been gaslighted, they’re told ‘Why are you feeling like that. Everything is normal.’ The implication is we should just suck it up and it’s fine.” She continues, “I think slowly the medical field is moving toward helping people feel optimal, but I feel like it spans a lifetime of figuring out that like, ‘Oh yeah, it says that your vitamin D is in the normal range,’ but in order to have some energy, your vitamin D actually needs to be above ‘normal’.” That’s why Allie has introduced this new pillar of hormone and wellness to her repertoire. Her talented team creates a safe space where people can understand what is changing in their bodies and how to fix it long term. When labwork is ordered, sitting down with Allie or another nurse practitioner ensures that they review every item to understand the symptoms and their causes. “Looking at the whole picture and matching the symptoms to the data, I feel like it not only makes the patient feel seen, but enables us to figure out the root cause of a lot of these things.” A large portion of Allie’s clients are perimenopausal and menopausal women trying to understand their symptoms as hormone levels change. However, men go through similar experiences, and there is an uptick in support to help them navigate the aging process. “We have men going through it, too, as they age,” Allie explains. “They realize they are more tired and they don’t have as much energy as they

“Looking at the whole picture and matching the symptoms to the data, I feel like it not only makes the patient feel seen, but enables us to figure out the root cause.” used to. While their issue is mostly testosterone-based, there could be so many other things involved in it, too.” In addition to wellness, Allie’s team offers injectables like Botox, skin repair like micro-needling, and they help people age the way they want. She stands by medical-grade products like Retin-A or tretinoin, vitamin C, and sunblock. “Retin-A is probably my desert island skincare that I would take with me,” Allie laughs. “If

there’s one thing that’s going to help you age gracefully, and help you look like you longer, it’s retinol because it increases cellular turnover.” In the end, Allie wants people to feel better about themselves. “My goal is to get you to the point where you don’t have to see me as often,” Allie says. “To get to a point where you feel like you again. I think that has been the most rewarding in the last six and a half years, watching people grow with me.”

Values

Health

Is the most important key to living a full and healthy life hiding from you? There are many factors to consider when thinking about what constitutes health. The food we eat, exercise, environmental influences, our emotions, and our spiritual awareness are all pillars of health. However, there is one factor that tops the list which often goes unspoken; living in alignment with your value system. Defining values helps a person to structure their life based on personal belief systems by determining what is most meaningful and important to them. From there, a sense of purpose is derived and defined values become tenets from which to live. There are plentiful examples of values, and they vary from person to person. Some examples of values include family, humility, benevolence, leadership, kindness, independence, creativity, and adventure. Our emotions serve to guide us to understanding whether our actions are in alignment with our values. When we live incongruently with our value system, we are betraying ourselves and delivering a subconscious message that we do not matter. Emotions that can come from not living in accordance with our values are based in fear and include anxiety, depression, anger, resentment, and jealousy. Living from a place of fear tends

to foster bad habits such as addictive behavior, poor dietary choices, negative sleep habits, and unhealthy relationships. Physiologically, the natural flow of energy in the body becomes stuck, wreaking havoc in the body physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. From there, symptoms and illness ensue. However, when we love and respect ourselves enough, we will spend our time and energy according to our values and emotions where love becomes more prevalent. Those emotions include gratitude, joy, peace, comfort, connection, trust, and happiness. Living from love leads to a desire, willingness and commitment to engage in activities that fulfill our sense of purpose. By doing so, our body’s energy moves with ease. When our energy flows freely, we feel vital, healthy, purposeful, and joyful. Identifying our values becomes easier when we create space in our lives to understand what brings us meaning in life. Here are five steps to create space to aid in identifying your values:

5. Speak your values out loud

1. Grounding/Earthing I have experienced it myself and I hear so many others share a similar experience, that being in nature is healing. Getting our hands into the earth with gardening, walking along the beach, taking a hike, or even lying in the grass brings an almost indescribable sense of well-being. Connecting with the earth’s electrical charge is thought to aid in pain reduction, modulate the immune system, and reduce inflammation. It also can lead to feeling more centered, allowing us to focus on what is most important to us.

2. Meditation/prayer Setting your intentions in quiet solitude using meditation or prayer provides clarity. Meditation may seem overwhelming, but you can make it simple by not expecting perfection in the process. I suggest finding guided meditations online that grab your attention. Try various guided meditations until you find one that feels right.

3. Exercise In addition to the more obvious benefits of exercise, it temporarily unblocks stagnation thereby creating space for objectivity.

4. Journaling Getting thoughts on paper helps clarify intentions.

There are many benefits to literally speaking our truths and discussing our values out loud with a trusted confidant. Bouncing ideas and having meaningful discussions can help us determine our framework and organize our thinking. Sometimes friends and family may not provide the most objective perspectives and professional counseling or life coaching may be more appropriate, while at other times a friend or family member is the most perfect fit! When we live in alignment with our values, we are honoring ourselves in the most self-loving way. From there, our vibrancy shines to our loved ones, our neighbors and even strangers we see out and about. It becomes not only the best gift you can give yourself, but that of our community. So cheers to 2026, let’s make this the best year yet!

When Julie Flukiger received a wine-making kit from her husband, Marcel Flukiger, in 2005, little did she know that this new hobby would quickly become a business venture spanning several decades. Today, Julie and Marcel are proud owners of Aspen Peak Cellars, offering award-winning wines, lunch, dinner, live music, and the famous Snowshoe & Fondue event on a beautiful stretch of the North Fork South Platte River in Bailey, Colorado. The Flukigers created a space featuring delicious cuisine paired with phenomenal wines, in a gorgeous setting that caters to everyone. “Marcel and Julie are trained chefs, and we have an amazing executive chef, Kevin Shmaefsky,” Tracie Schaefer, Front of House Manager, explains. “The food is off the charts. The wine is amazing. Everything stands up on its own, but it’s designed to be paired.” She goes on, “We’re definitely not pretentious. We’re super approachable, really casual, super fun, but the wine and the food, it’s a little bit of a surprise when you get there because you just don’t expect it from little old Bailey.”

Tracie has been with the Flukigers since 2014 and has been in awe of their resilience. Having rebuilt twice and pivoted through COVID, they found people flocked to their place for its upscale wine and food and casual elegance. “We do have beautiful seating along the river, and we do a lot of rehearsal dinners, retirement, graduation, and bridal parties,” Tracie announces proudly. While they are known for their wine, outdoor patio, live music, and delicious food, the Flukigers created an event called Snowshoe & Fondue to create some fun in the winter months and as an ode to Marcel’s Swiss heritage. “Marcel is Swiss, so we serve his generational family authentic Swiss cheese fondue,” Tracie notes. “We start with the food & wine pairing challenge, six wines and six tapas, followed by the fondue, a glass of wine & live music.” The best part? The food and drink are well deserved after the snowshoeing event that starts the day. CONTINUED >

“WHEN YOU PUT IT ALL TOGETHER FOR THE PRICE,” TRACIE SAYS. “IT’S JUST AN AMAZING ACTIVITY, AND IT HAS VERY COLORADO VIBES ABOUT IT.”

“Marcel is famous for calling it the zero-calorie event,” Tracie laughs. Reservations are made online, 45 days in advance, and the day starts at 10:30 AM at Aspen Peak Cellars. After waivers are signed, guides and staff are met, and dietary restrictions are conveyed, everyone caravans for a 15-20-minute drive to a private property at the base of Kenosha Pass owned by the nonprofit, Wilderness on Wheels.

“They’re an amazing nonprofit that has several miles of ADA boardwalk that’s built along the river and on the base of the mountain that allows wheelchair-bound people to get out and camp, hike, and fish and be outside in nature,” Tracie explains. She continues, “We use the property in the winter, and we give them a very generous donation at the end of each season from our Snowshoe & Fondue proceeds to help them maintain the boardwalks and the trails.” Guests who participate in the Snowshoe & Fondue event pay $135 for the entire day, which includes, snowshoes and poles, an hour and a half of snowshoeing with a guide, beautiful scenery for pictures, spiced wine at the top of the mountain, and then followed up with delicious fondue and tapas, a wine pairing, another complimentary glass of wine, and a live band back at the Aspen Peak Cellars. “When you put it all together for the price,” Tracie says. “It’s just an amazing activity, and it has very Colorado vibes about it.” No prior snowshoeing experience is required, and guests can choose among three routes based on their comfort and preferred level of exertion. “There’s kind of a low-lying route,” Tracie explains. “There’s a midway where they get up to a nice vantage point for pictures, and then there’s a tougher route that we call the Gutbuster, which has a pretty significant elevation gain right at the end, but the views from the top are beautiful.” CONTINUED >

Once at the top, spiced wine is served while taking in the views for about 20-30 minutes before descending and returning to Aspen Peak Cellars. Either Marcel or Rachel, the winemaker, greets guests upon their return to explain the wine pairing challenge and why they paired certain items. The fun kicks into high gear as food and drinks flow, the wine challenge begins, and the live music rocks the venue. “We rotate through probably 25 to 30 bands, and we do live music every Saturday and Sunday year-round,” Tracie says. “Some are just single players. Some are duos. Some are four and five-piece bands, but we just rotate through all of our local musicians, so the vibe is different every day.”

As the day comes to a close, guests are welcome to stay past the 3 or 3:30 official event ending and purchase more of the remarkable food and drink Aspen Peak Cellars has to offer. This 21-and-over event is now in its 15th year and has averaged over 1,000 snowshoers in recent years. A social media boom last summer sent waves of people from around the world to Aspen Peak Cellars to experience the atmosphere and participate in the Snowshoe & Fondue experience, including Australians. “It’s just a very unique kind of Colorado experience,” Tracie offers. “And it’s a great change of pace for the staff… when snowshoe season rolls around, we say, oh, this is going to be fun!”

It’s been said that “life is just a bowl of cherries,” and it just so happens that cherries might improve your life. This nutrient-dense, heart-healthy fruit may lower blood pressure and cholesterol, combat inflammation, help the body manage stress, speed recovery after exercise, balance your mood and help you sleep. To say it is a superfood may be an understatement. So it’s only fitting that we include a mocktail recipe with cherries as the star ingredient this month. Let’s drink to health, wellness and a wonderful year ahead! Cheers!
