Our February Issue issue is dedicated to man’s best friend. Dogs have a way of making us feel special, and their loyalty and sense of wonder is refreshing. In this issue, there will not be a shortage of inspirational articles for all things dogs. One of our favorite recipes for making your dog his very own homemade birthday cake with frosting is sure to delight. (All the ingredients are healthy and dog-friendly.) Not to mention great dog-approved hikes around town that are beneficial for the both of you. Heading into our second month of 2023, we hope you can take some time to relax and spend time with the ones you love. With the hectic schedules picking up again, it is easy to let our hobbies, talents and special interests fall by the wayside. We just must be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests we love and that fill us up. One of which certainly includes our beloved pets. When dog owners transport their dogs, safety is paramount—especially when circumstances force them to leave their dogs unattended in a vehicle. PuppTech is a Colorado startup devoted to keep dogs safe. Their first product, the PuppComm system, incorporates an embedded sensor and a Digi XBee® 3 LTE radio to monitor in-vehicle temperatures and send text and email alarms if thresholds are exceeded. Now dog owners can keep tabs on their pets virtually from anywhere.
Who doesn’t want the best for their fur baby? Owner Mary Loves has been grooming since 2003. She managed the grooming department for a well-known animal hospital in Castle Pines before starting her own business in town and is in the process of obtaining her Master Groomer Certification. Castle Rock resident Taryn Skipper has been painting professionally in watercolor for over a decade. All she needs is a photo, and she can paint any animal or other subject/s for you. Terrain was designed to give residents ample space to connect with nature and with one another, and Dog Bone Park is no exception. Wiggly Dog Park If you’re new to the Meadows community, you can find Wiggly Dog Park north of Paintbrush Park. It’s a great fenced area to let your dog run and socialize with others. If you have an athletic pup and would like to try a few tricks, you and your dog can go in, out, and over a few obstacles. If your dog is more of the roaming type, that’s fine. They can play with others; there’s plenty of space for that, too. If you’re looking for something different to do this summer, check out Yappy Hour. It’s happy hour for you and your dog several Tuesdays throughout the summer at Wiggly Dog Park. Check out the Meadows Facebook page to learn more about this fun event. Douglas County Off-Leash Area by DC Fairgrounds Midday is the best time to visit Douglas County Off-Leash Area. At this time of day, there are several fur parents and canines you and your dog can socialize and play with. This off-leash dog park has two areas where you can let your fur baby play. The Glendale Farm Open Space Dog Park This park is a fully fenced, 17-acre off-leash area adjacent to the Glendale Farm Trail in Castle Rock. The park features plenty of space for Fido to run, benches for humans, and a mini agility course. After some off-leash fun, leash your pup and enjoy the 1.6-mile Glendale Farm Trail.
SHOPPING Outlets at Castle Rock Dogs make the best retail-therapy partners, and this shopping center welcomes them inside. Dogfriendly is their specialty with a small doggy area and plenty of pats from pup-loving staff. Many a day you will see walkers early in the morning walking around with their furry friend and chatting it up with others. Murdoch’s—A Ranch & Home Supply Store Murdoch’s employees love it when you put your friendly dogs on a leash and walk them into the stores. As a pet-friendly business, Murdoch’s welcomes them all year, but they especially love when you take advantage of this little shopping perk during the hot summer months. They even have loaner leashes for you to borrow. One of their least favorite things to see is a pet inside a dangerously hot car in their parking lot. Please bring ‘em into the store with you! They have a secured 2-acre parcel where dogs can live out that dream—playing fetch, keeping cool in the pool, or simply exploring and discovering new scents around the pasture. If your dog prefers to be led on a nature walk around the 35-acre property, they are happy to accommodate. Of course, all dogs will get awesome belly rubs, hugs, and ear scratches throughout the day! Tails Up Tails Up’s enriched daycare program is intentionally different from what you will find in other facilities. They recommend that their daycare dogs stay between 9:00 am and 4:30 pm to ensure they can receive all of their playtime! They have a 7,000-square-foot outdoor play yard covered with K9 Grass, a synthetic turf designed specifically for dogs. Each yard has a fun climbing area to provide guests with places to explore or sunbathe after chasing the ball or wrestling with new friends. There are two large yards for the bigger dogs and a separate small-dogs-only play yard.

Dog-Fr iend ly Bi r thd ay C a ke Re c ipe CAKE INGREDIENTS: • 2 eggs • 1/2 cup peanut butter (spread or pure) • 1/4 cup oil (canola, vegetable) • 2/3 cup milk (or water) • 1/3 cup honey or maple syrup (or apple sauce or skip it) • 2 1/2 cup shredded carrot (2 large) • 2 cups whole wheat / whole meal flour (or white flour) • 2 1/2 tsp baking soda DOG-FRIENDLY FROSTING INGREDIENTS: • 600–700g / 1.2 - 1.4lb potatoes, peeled, cut into chunks • 3/4–1 cup yogurt (plain unsweetened) or water CAKE INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 180C/350F (160C fan). 2. Grease and line the base of 2 20cm/8” cake pans. 3. Whisk together eggs, peanut butter, oil, honey and milk (a few peanut butter lumps ok). 4. Stir in carrots, then add flour and baking soda. Stir until just combined (over mixing = hard cake = sad birthday pooch). 5. Divide batter between the cake pans, spread and smooth surface. 6. Bake 25 minutes or until skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. 7. Cool on racks. Frost per below. FROSTING INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Boil, steam or microwave potato until very soft. 2. Whip potato and yogurt with an electric beater until fluffy and smooth as possible (won’t go 100% smooth)—about 1 1/2 minutes on medium speed (speed 5). 3. Use water as needed to loosen frosting to soft spreadable consistency (like human buttercream frosting!). Use while warm (it “sets” when it cools). 4. Spread 1/4 frosting on one cake. 5. Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our three tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love. A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.
1. USE REAL ESTATE WISELY Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.
2. ORGANIZE BY KIND AND COLOR Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.
3. UPGRADED HANGERS The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:
