For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons, and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of City Lifestyle Castle Rock with a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional, and mental health. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home, and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so occasionally might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s most of the time choices. So, plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, fulfilling, and fabulous 2023. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you.

IS IT A STRUGGLE TO LOVE YOURSELF?
PRACTICING SELF-LOVE
I haven’t always loved myself. Even with years of intentional practice under my belt, some days it still seems like the hardest thing to do.
My definition of self-love is taking care of your mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Self-love often means doing less and becoming quiet, so that you can nourish and nurture your whole self, body, mind, and spirit.
WHY IS IT SO HARD TO LOVE MYSELF? My guess is that it comes from years of being teased in grade school, middle school, and high school. I endured the teasing, but I was left with emotional scars and the feeling that there must be something wrong with me. As an adult, I have done enough work to know in my heart that there really is nothing wrong with me. Not one little thing. In fact, if I could revisit my little girl self during those formative years, my heart would say to her, “Your name is beautiful and so are you. You are unique and different. You stand out, and it’s okay if people don’t understand you. Keep shining your light as brightly as you can. Be the kind, generous, smart human being you are, and the people who matter will see you and understand you.” It has taken time to gain this wisdom. It has also taken years of intentional practice. While my heart seems to understand, my brain can still be stubborn. On days when things aren’t going well, it is almost too easy for my brain to chime in with negative self-talk. That little voice gets really loud, pointing out how I have failed, listing all the things that aren’t working, telling me how I could be better… and leaving behind the thought there must be something wrong with me. It is on these days, more than others, that the time I invest in practices that inspire self-care and self-love truly pays off. Having strong practices in place before the proverbial sh@! hits the fan, makes it possible for me to dive deeper than my stubborn brain to a more peaceful place in my heart where I can love myself just as I am.
THESE ARE THE TOOLS THAT HELP ME PRACTICE SELF-LOVE: • • • • • • • • • • • •
meditation prayer journaling talk therapy learning to set healthy boundaries spending time in nature digital discipline solitude reflection gratitude forgiveness affirmations and intentions
PRACTICING SELF-CARE My definition of self-care is how you treat your body from the inside out. It includes the choices you make for the overall health and wellness of your physical form. I find that self-care rituals turn my attention toward nurturing and nourishing my body and keeping my energy and stress levels in harmony. Self-care rituals offer me the opportunity to slow down, pay attention, and quiet the chatter in my brain. When my brain is focused on caring for my body, the negativity fades away. So, the more time I invest in self-care rituals, the more able I am to experience self-love.
“Self-love often means doing less and becoming quiet so that you can nourish and nurture your whole self, body, mind, and spirit.”

“It has taken time to gain this wisdom. It has also taken years of intentional practice.” THE SELF-CARE RITUALS THAT HELP ME QUIET THE MENTAL CHATTER AND RESTORE MY ENERGY INCLUDE: • • • • • • • • • • •
hydration preparing and eating healthy foods exercise and movement taking care of my skin hot Epsom salts baths keeping a consistent hygiene routine keeping up with well checks getting ready for the day, every day dry brushing self-massage facial reflexology
USING RITUALS TO PRACTICE SELF-LOVE Self-care rituals can be simple things that help you catch your breath and pause your to-do list. A ritual can involve one simple thing like moving away from the screen to drink a glass of water at set times throughout your workday. A ritual can also be a combination of things that support your well being like dry brushing then taking a hot shower or bath. When you are ready to create your own self-care rituals, try not to be overly ambitious when you begin. Keeping things simple will encourage you to practice more consistently. As you select your rituals, be playful and curious. Make sure the practices you choose fit your lifestyle

because if they are too unfamiliar they will add more disruption, leaving you frustrated. The objective behind any selfcare ritual is to nourish, nurture, and restore, so be careful not to overwhelm yourself with a flood of new things to learn. Keep returning to the practices that feel good, and be playful as you try out things that might work for you.
SAMPLE SELF-CARE RITUALS Morning: • Wake up and practice digital discipline—avoid social media and email until you have taken the time to begin your day with self-care in mind. • Begin and complete your hygiene routine • Meditate for five minutes Afternoon: • Make a hot cup of tea to sip at your desk while you work • Take a walk and get some fresh air and Vitamin D • Drink a full glass of water Evening: • Skincare routine • Dry brushing • Take a shower or hot bath • Journal

A new year opens doors to new opportunities, whether that’s getting outside more, trying fresh family activities or finishing that forgotten DIY project. In addition to checking off that resolution list, make feeling confident in your own skin a priority—literally. Caring for your skin by visiting a dermatologist not only increases

your confidence, it also makes sure your body is functioning properly. It’s time to step your skin care up from cheap sheet masks. Elevated Dermatology and Skin Cancer Surgery Center is a one stop shop when caring for your skin care needs. The team at Elevated Dermatology helps with a wide array of skin concerns
from redness to cancer. Dr. Kate Messana, DO, FAOCD, FAAD, and Dr. Christopher Messana, DO, FAOCD, FAAD, ACMS, opened Elevated Dermatology in 2017 with the aim of bringing comprehensive, patient-focused dermatological care to Parker. Dr. Zachary Jones, MD, FAAD, joined the team in 2020. CONTINUED >

“As a physician-owned, independent, private practice, we have tailored Elevated Dermatology to best serve the needs of the community,” explains Dr. Christopher. “We have only board-certified dermatologists and we have the fellowship-trained subspecialists needed to provide the highest level of care possible.” Your primary healthcare provider may not be versed in the all the diverse skin-related problems that a board-certified dermatologist is. The physicians at Elevated Dermatology are able to provide appropriate and complex care in-office, increasing the odds of the best outcome. This patient-based approach is carried throughout the Elevated Dermatology team. Whether you’re walking in for the first time or have the office on speed dial, you’re treated like family. “I enjoy that [dermatology] allows [me] to see patients of all ages and follow them through the course of their life,” says Dr. Zachary. “This affords me the opportunity to establish meaningful and fulfilling relationships with my patients.” Living in Colorado, it’s especially important to keep a close eye on your skin’s health. The high elevation and 300 days of sunshine leave Coloradans at higher risk of skin-damaged skin. UV damage can manifest on skin as wrinkles, age spots and even skin cancer. “Prevention is the best strategy,” Dr. Zachary states. “Use of sunscreen, hats and sun-protective clothing goes a long way in reducing skin cancer risk. For those concerned about wrinkles and age spots, sun protection is also the best preventative treatment to keep skin looking young.” Although caring for and protecting your skin are important, Dr. Kate strives to also educate her patients about their skin. She wants them to be able to understand why something is happening and how different treatments work to treat an ailment. “I believe it’s an art to practice dermatology,” Dr. Kate says. “Taking care of your skin is not as tough as you might think. All you have to do is understand why.” When it comes down to it, visiting a dermatologist can be as important as visiting your family doctor. Different diseases can present themselves in your skin and it’s crucial to find a cause before anything worsens. Even seeing a dermatologist for aesthetic reasons is key to boosting your confidence and feeling good in your body. If you’re concerned about a skin spot, a rash, a lesion or another problem area, don’t hesitate to reach out to the Elevated Dermatology team. “We will take it from there,” Dr. Kate exclaims. To join the Elevated Dermatology and Skin Cancer Surgery Center family and to start caring for your skin, visit www.elevatedderm.com or call (720) 851-5200.

Understanding the importance of Dance I couldn’t help but be in a better mood after spending time with dance instructor and owner of the Arthur Murray Dance Studio of Castle Rock, Morris Vaccarella III. To be around him and not smile would be an insult. I couldn’t stop smiling being around him as well as wanting to get on the dance floor immediately to learn some new moves. His passion for dance spans back to when he was a young gentleman starting out as a first-time dance instructor in his early twenties at the Lakewood studio (which was the first studio he purchased) He still lights up talking about working his way up and finally purchasing that studio, and now he
owns three including the Castle Rock studio. Morris explained he did everything from mopping floors, taking phone calls, running errands and everything in between. Morris said he was jack of all trades when he started, and when he finally purchased his first studio it was one of the best days of his life. If there was ever a poster child for the benefits of a life of dance, it would be Morris. He eludes happiness and physically looks and moves like a man who would run circles around you in a Dancing with the Stars competition. His energy is contagious, and you just get the feeling his staff and students feel the same way about him.

Pinning down Morris is another talent altogether; he is a nonstop energy ball, and when I finally got to sit down to discuss the health benefits of dance, I couldn’t wait to learn the secrets. I was excited to hear from the expert as to why dancing at any age is good for you. I shouldn’t have been surprised that he was already prepared. Five minutes into the conversation he pulled out an outline to be included in the article with not one, not two, but 26 benefits of dancing. Morris explained that he wrote the benefits to dance down into categories and even said he had a few more but thought we could just get our “feet wet” with the basics. The basics I thought, 31 basics, okay—I then wondered to myself, how many lessons does the studio truly have if I was just handled the basics? Secretly I was rather impressed and even more intrigued to see the list. Once we went over the list, I could get a better understanding about why everyone should try dance class at least once. The benefits are truly everything a person would be looking for when wanting to stay in prime health.
Category 2- Mental and Emotional Benefits Sleep and Stress Level – Regular physical activity produces endorphins – chemicals in the brain that improve the ability to sleep and reduce stress. Empowerment and Confidence – Attending dance classes regularly will make you feel good about yourself. It will make you feel more disciplined, fulfilled, confident, and in control of your daily life. Unwind and Recover - Dance forces you to live in the now. It disconnects you from all your problems, giving you a chance to unwind and recover from the stresses of the daily life. Happiness and Mood- Dancing and physical interactions with other happy people is one of the most powerful natural antidepressants. LEGGINGS 3 WAY S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS
Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.
Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!
MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.
SAT U R DAY SPORTS CH IC Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look. JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . FAVORITE WINTER HIKES AROUND THE ROCK
One of the best things about being surrounded with like-minded peeps in Castle Rock is no one here thinks hiking is just for the warmer months. Being outside enjoying nature can keep you present. Walking can be a form of meditation when you’re outside on a hike. Snow-covered trails and blue skies that seem to stretch into forever, that’s winter hiking at its best. Don’t forget to be prepared! It can be fine one minute and a completely different story the next. As my mother always says way too much, “make good choices” which in this scenario means enjoy your adventure but check weather conditions, wear the right clothing, bring the right gear and before heading out make sure someone knows where you are headed for the day.
