In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. WELCOME DR. MELANIE WOLF Dr. Melanie Wolf earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She then went on to earn her medical degree from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, where she graduated magna cum laude. She completed her internship and dermatology residency with Ohio Health Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, where she served as chief resident. Dr. Wolf enjoys all aspects of dermatology, and has a special interest in diagnosing and treating skin cancer, acne, psoriasis, pediatric dermatology, and cosmetics. Wellspring Community Celebrates 15 Years of Boundless Possibility For the past 15 years, in the heart of Castle Rock, Wellspring Community has been making a significant impact. Founded on the principles of love, inclusivity, and limitless potential, Wellspring has become a beacon of hope and transformation for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). In celebration of the first 15 years, we‘ll look back at the achievements of the Wellspring Community and their exciting plans to enrich lives while also building a more inclusive community.

A COMMUNITY LIKE NO OTHER Nicole DeVries, the dedicated executive director of the Wellspring Community, radiates enthusiasm when she discusses the organization’s journey. Nicole feels that Wellspring’s greatest achievement is not just about the exceptional programs they offer but also the creation of a true community for adults with I/DD—whom they refer to as STARs. “While Wellspring has done so much to create great programming,” Nicole says, “I think the most important accomplishment

is truly creating a community for adults with I/ DD—a community where they are known, where they belong, and where they get to do all these cool things.” But, according to Nicole, most of the families will say what’s most valuable to their STARs are the relationships they have formed with staff, peers, and community members. “I believe that is what sets Wellspring apart from other day programs,” says Nicole. “We aren’t a program. We are a community.”

WELLSPRING’S SPECIAL ESSENCE Nicole says the palpable joy that fills the room when you visit Wellspring is what makes this community truly special. “Most people will say that they feel the joy in the room when they are at Wellspring, and I think that’s true,” she says. “But what underlies the joy is an understanding of God’s unconditional love and grace for each and every person.” This foundation of love and acceptance is the cornerstone upon which Wellspring’s success and impact are built.

ONLINE LEARNING SUCCESS A remarkable aspect of Wellspring’s journey is its STARs’ success with online learning and engagement. While the COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges for many students, those at Wellspring excelled in the online learning environment. This success can be attributed to the dedication of Wellspring teachers who quickly adapted to engage participants, promoted physical activity, and offered much-needed social interactions. “I have 5 children that all had to do online learning during the pandemic,” Nicole shares. “I watched Wellspring teachers, and then would watch my children’s teachers, and the difference was night and day. Truly. Wellspring teachers, in such a short amount of time, figured out how to engage each participant, get them up and moving, and provide a much-needed social outlet. “The classes we offer online are colorful, creative, and more fun than anything else the participant could be doing at that moment. For some of our participants, they are able to relax because they are in their own homes. [And] some participants had to learn how to do things on their own (like unmute) where— when they were hands-on with a teacher—they could convince the teacher to do it for them. So, in a sense, our teachers learned where they were enabling, and our STARs had to grow in independence, which was good for everyone.”

ENGAGING THE WIDER COMMUNITY Nicole invites everyone to become a part of their mission at Wellspring, but this is not a selfish request. Volunteering isn’t just about “helping Wellspring,” Nicole says. “It’s a mutual transformation where individuals grow, learn, and change as they interact with—and share life experiences with—people with disabilities. We see life transformation

Their dedicated teachers create customized curriculum to meet each individual’s unique needs, ensuring continuous learning, growth, and skill development. Each new trimester brings fresh opportunities for the STARs to explore and excel.

MEANINGFUL WORK OPPORTUNITIES Wellspring’s Work Opportunities program, which started with baking cookies in a founder’s kitchen, has evolved into a core function. The STARs now find fulfillment and pride in their work at Wellspring & Co. Bakery, Wellspring & Co. Art Studio, and the

Castle Rock Collective. Receiving paychecks and dividends is not just about financial reward for Wellspring’s STARs; it’s about the sense of accomplishment and contribution to society. In the next 15 years, Wellspring aims to expand these work opportunities further, ensuring that every adult with I/DD who desires employment can find meaningful work in accessible and adaptive environments.

A BOLD STEP TOWARDS INDEPENDENCE In 2024, Wellspring will embark on a new journey by offering residential ser vices for adults with I/DD. Unit y on Park, in partnership with the Douglas Count y Housing Partnership and Wellspring Housing, is an independent living facilit y that will enable adults with I/DD to live in the communit y

while receiving the necessar y support from Wellspring Communit y. This endeavor represents a step toward greater independence and inclusivit y for Wellspring’s STA Rs.

THE NEXT 15 YEARS The next 15 years hold immense promise for Wellspring and its STARs, which Nicole likens to her own personal journey of discovering golf at 25—a sport she never thought she could join until her grandfather instilled confidence in her. Similarly, “Wellspring envisions a future where every STAR has access to the tools and opportunities that enable them to unlock their full potential. Whether through computers for creative endeavors, photography, or various other unexplored avenues, Wellspring is committed to helping adults with I/DD realize their capabilities and thrive.”

Wellspring & Co. Bakery teaches students an endless list of life skills. From measuring ingredients and following instructions to packaging the finished products for sale, the STARs who choose to take the class enjoy the pride and responsibility of creating delicious desserts for the Castle Rock community. Brianna Delmont and Kristin Arzbaecher manage the bakery and teach students. Both bakers/teachers are graduates of Johnson and Wales Culinary School in Denver, and both find great joy and fulfillment in running this full-scale bakery. “It’s the most rewarding job,” Kristin says. “The simplest things that we may take for granted every day can bring immense pride and a great amount of joy to our STARs. “It has made me appreciate the small things in life,” she continues. “You can laugh about silly things and you don’t have to stress about everything that goes wrong in your day.” making a cake better. It’s so Kristin and Brianne work and teach together, conducting two classes a day, with four students in each class. This small class size allows students to receive customized lesson plans that cater to each student’s learning style and special needs. “All our students have a hand in everything we make,” Kristin says. As part of a public cooperative, students also have the opportunity to earn money from the treats they make. “The STARs sign that they’re participating in the co-op, and they receive dividend checks based on the profit that month,” Kristin explains. The Cookie That Started Everything Mary Lou Fenton, the founder of Wellspring, was baking with her daughter Emily and a few of her friends in her kitchen. They were making oatmeal butterscotch cookies and they sold them. Sales went well, and soon they didn’t have enough room in her house. So they rented out a space at a local church, then they got too big for that. The enterprise moved to Castle Oaks and partnered with them to renovate the space into a fully functional commercial kitchen. The Wellspring & Co. Bakery still makes oatmeal butterscotch cookies, but Kristin and Brianne have graciously shared the recipe.

12 oz. unsalted butter (softened) 6.5 oz. white sugar 11 oz. brown sugar 3 eggs 2 tsp. vanilla extract 1 lb. 1.5 oz all-purpose flour 12.5 oz. rolled oats 2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1 bag butterscotch chips

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats. 2. Using a hand or stand mixer, mix together softened butter and sugars until smooth. 3. Add egg and vanilla to butter mixture and mix until combined 4. In a separate bowl, combine f lour, oats, baking powder, salt, and butterscotch chips. 5. Add flour mixture to egg and butter mixture and mix until combined. 6. Dough will be stick y. Chill dough in the fridge for at least 45 minutes before scooping. 7. Scoop about 3 tablespoons of dough per cookie, and place on baking sheets (roughly 4 inches apart) Bake for 13–14 minutes or until lightly browned on the sides. The centers will look very soft.

Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky. Adding a cloth napkin and cloth placemat is a great way to add texture and more autumn color to your table. If the weather doesn’t cooperate on your day, bring the outdoors in with a lovely indoor garden party dressed up in fall foliage.

It’s campfire season! You know what that means? S’MORES! These sweet treats are staples during the fall and winter! I have many childhood memories of sitting by the campfire with my family telling stories, gazing at the stars, and roasting marshmallows. This year, take your s’mores to a whole new level with this S’mores Dessert Board! They are so easy and fun to make! Similar to a Charcuterie Board, a S’mores Dessert Board is beautifully decorated and full of everything you need to make the perfect s’mores! Some of my favorite things to include in a s’mores are either peanut butter or a mint chocolate candy!

W H AT YOU W ILL NEED: Board: A beautiful wood board or metal tray will look great! Marshmallows: Choose between regular, jumbo, or flavored marshmallows. Chocolate: There are so many options for chocolate when it comes to s’mores! There’s milk chocolate, peanut butter chocolates, white chocolate, caramel chocolates, and much more! Graham Crackers: Use graham crackers or a variety of cookies for your s’mores. Fresh Fruit: Include fresh fruits as toppings for your s’mores. Falling For Neutrals SEASONAL DECOR TIPS FOR KEEPING IT SIMPLE I love decorating for the holiday season, but it gets tough if trying to keep a home decor airy, light and neutral. My home is full of neutrals, such as linen, khaki, white and gray, so decorating for the holidays can be tricky with the bright and bold themes on display at the stores. Here are tips regarding how to achieve a festive look without going overboard.

LESS IS MORE First, whenever decorating for the holiday season, I clear what's possible to make room for what's coming. I eliminate decor pieces that are displayed year-round to avoid adding clutter to rooms. Giving decor pieces or floral arrangements their own space to shine can pull the room together and make it feel very designed.

GO COZY Swapping out usual throw pillows and throw blankets for plushy, cuddly materials and seasonal prints are another simple way to add holiday spirit without being so literal. Opting for neutral plaids, cable knits, or sherpa materials add that feeling of fall and winter.

CATER TO ALL THE SENSES Don’t forget about the smell! Stocking up on candles that smell like the season is the last missing piece for a holiday vibe. The total sensory feeling of the holidays is what really brings a home to life, whether it's pumpkin spice burning for Thanksgiving or a fresh pine and cedar for Christmas.

STICK TO THE PALETTE As best as possible, I try to stick to each of the color palettes in my room. When it’s time to bring out pumpkins or holiday Santas, I stick to white and neutral or add in color pops of gold and silver to keep everything flowing. If I start to add too many primary colors, it ends up looking like a mash-up gone astray.

CELEBRATE MEMORIES The holidays are often bursting with family traditions and memories, and decor can reflect that, too. I have many items handed down over the years that I like admiring, but if they aren’t quite right for my room, there are options to bring the spirit of them to life. Framed holiday family photos in a black and white filter are an excellent way to tie in your history of celebrating in a subtle way.

LOOK TO NATURE Some of my favorite items to use for holiday decor come from a simple nature walk. Using actual items you find, or just getting inspiration from the outdoors is a great way to bring sights of the season indoors. For fall, elements such as branches, leaves and neutral gourds match with everything. For winter, I love using sticks with berries
