Another year, and what a great way to start it off with than none other than our Explore Issue. Everyone seems to always have something going on. Colorado’s middle name should be Adventure and Colorado's last name should be Explore. So with that in mind, for our April issue, we wanted to share with you how some of us are getting out to explore locally, globally and in our homes. When I decided to start a publication for our community in Castle Rock and our beautiful state of Colorado 4 years ago, one of the main reasons was this community has the passion of an adventurer. Do you want to know one of the best characteristics of an adventurer is? They do not stay with the bad experiences. There are no bad experiences, only life lessons. Daring to do everything has its advantages and disadvantages. One of them is that it does not always end well. There are decisions that often have a very different outcome than expected, but that is never a problem. On the contrary! Learning from mistakes and bad experiences is a great satisfaction on a personal level. In the end, everything comes down to one more anecdote that you can tell at family meals. Spring symbolizes new beginnings. There are a multitude of diverse spots around town to discover, whether it is a new restaurant with a great patio to enjoy with friends and family, a hiking trail to take in nature and the surrounding scenery or a niche boutique hotel for a relaxing staycation—there is something for everyone. We hope that the articles featured this month give your own inspiration to explore all life has to offer. We are excited for you to find your own things to do, places to explore and memories to share. Lastly, thank you to all of those who support our efforts. We deeply appreciate every read, like, share, and attendance at our events. The team puts a lot of work into what they do and it entails more challenges than we could have ever imagined. Sharks and Conservation One Family's Efforts - Now a Three-Generation Legacy ARTICLE BY JOHN STOKES | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHN STOKES AND OTHERS
Born in 1973, John Stokes grew up near the golden sands of California and Hawaii. He was introduced to the ocean shortly after he was born and has had a lifelong connection to the ocean and bodies of water throughout his life. Around age five he began snorkeling and free diving and then became SCUBA certified in 1992. He is currently pursuing certification as a Dive Master on the way to obtaining Tech Diver certification. He also holds a Rescue Diver certification. His diving adventures include Pacific beaches in Hawaii (every island), California, Oregon, Alaska, three

locations in Mexico plus Canada. Gulf of Mexico locations include Texas and Eastern Mexico and he’s completed dives in the Atlantic, including South Carolina. Inland dives include the Great Lakes and countless rivers around the globe. With experience SCUBA and free diving in three oceans, John has even been on river diving excursions in the Vladimir region of Russia shortly after the close of the Cold war. He has had a strong interest in sharks from a young age but didn’t see his first shark in the wild until 1992 (the same year his family moved to Grand Junction),

while diving off the coast of Santa Cruz Island in California. A blue shark swam by, made a big circle, then disappeared into a kelp bed. It was: “amazing, curious and harmless, beautiful and graceful!” John grew up closely acquainted with Ralph Collier who founded the Shark Research Committee in 1963. Ralph was also his dad’s best friend in high school. Darrell Stokes (John’s dad) is one of the original members of the Committee and has been involved with shark conservation and research projects far and wide ever since. Ralph Collier is one of the foremost shark biologists in the world. He’s also regarded as the leading authority and top white shark biologist in the Pacific. They got their start by going out on barges at night, catching sharks and then turning them over to biologists for examination. True pioneers, no doubt. As their scientific studies have advanced, it is now quite rare to find research done by conservationists where sharks are deliberately killed for study purposes. Sharks are often collected from fishing or shark nets where they have become entangled. Much of what happens to create imbalance in the earth’s ecosystems is caused by humans’ indiscriminate use of resources in irresponsible ways. For example, trawlers dragging the ocean floor for shrimp kill countless other species, often without regard for what is being removed along with the intended species. Terms like sustainably caught and responsibly harvested frequently disregard the often-irreparable harm done to species not considered “threatened”. Truthfully, harvesting just the sexually mature can be as devastating to an ecosystem as dredging a swath that takes every species encountered as in the case of bottom dragging trawlers. Sharks are the housekeepers of the ocean. They cull the weak, old and sick and allow the strong, healthy and sexually In a shark cage

mature of the many species around them to thrive. Humans either take too many mature of a species or act without any selective process to preserve the rest of the ecosystem. It happens on land too. The point, true responsibility means recognizing the consequences and making corrections to how we interact with nature, especially when we are so dependent upon it. Consider this: the majority of the earth’s oxygen supply is produced by tiny micro-organisms called diatoms in the oceans covering more than 70 percent of our planet’s surface. Like to breathe? Protecting the oceans is the best way to assure we all get to keep doing that. Guadeloupe Island is a rustic volcanic formation 180 miles southwest of Ensenada Mexico; a truly amazing place. It rises 14,000 feet from the ocean floor and ends with 4,000 feet of that mass above sea level. With great cooperation between Mexico and the scientific community, ocean conservation efforts around Guadeloupe Island, continue to make great strides. With a Mexican naval base on the island, it is under constant protection from those who might cause

its ecosystems any harm. As a protected island it is illegal to land there and very difficult to get permission to conduct any research from shore. Each year the largest female white sharks on earth gather around Guadeloupe Island to find a mate. Females as large as 17-18 feet in length are often seen and some, like two known as Deep Blue and Holla Girl which are 22-23 feet long are rarely seen and estimated to be around 50 years old. Some wonder how certain sharks can be identified year after year. Researchers have discovered that the mottling of the skin color along the transition between dark and light is as unique to these individual sharks as fingerprints are to humans. Recently John was interviewed on a local radio program called “That’s Good News”. In the interview he spoke about people’s curiosity toward his shark conservation activities as a long time Western Colorado resident. He told the reporter that his passion for this work is the driving force behind his daily work as a contractor operating in the Grand Valley and Roaring Fork Valley markets. John owns High Valley Enterprises and intends to eventually retire to shark conservation and research. Joined by his daughter, Lauren Stokes – age 14 - on a recent leopard shark research project, they now share a three-generation legacy of caring for some of nature’s greatest wonders. Her dad says, “she’s all in”. John visits Guadeloupe Island every year, except 2018 when a heavy storm caused 16 foot seas and 2020, when COVID restrictions broke that pattern. John travels to Guadeloupe Island with Islander Charters, the premier boat featured on the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week and numerous other shows on National Geographic, History and Discovery Channels. A friend who has been on several expeditions to Guadeloupe Island with John, Matt Sabo, shared this quote from John: “Look what we’ve done to creation. Take a few moments and reflect on how poorly we treat one another. When compared to swimming with the sharks, honestly, what is there to fear?” These efforts to understand nature, restore balance - when it can be done – and to understand each other better, lie at the heart of why this work
“It’s heartening to watch as a group of people from extremely diverse backgrounds, lifestyles and opinions gather year after year to share this experience and come away with a singular feeling of fellowship.”
is so important for our world and for the people and creatures who share it. Matt Sabo said this about his own experiences with these expeditions, “Having completed my fourth trip to Guadeloupe Island, I am now convinced the way to achieve world peace is to have everyone spend time together in a shark cage. It’s heartening to watch as a group of people from extremely diverse backgrounds, lifestyles and opinions gather year after year to share this experience and come away with a singular feeling of fellowship.” With so many shark enthusiasts from around the world taking part in these excursions, building awareness about how important their efforts are, and seeking out new and better ways to share the message, the next generation – including Lauren Stokes – is equally committed to turning the tide in favor of a healthier planet, more responsible use of the earth’s resources and greater awareness of consequences – both beneficial and destructive – tied to the actions of the one species that can choose to preserve all others and restore order where it has been disrupted.

My journey around town supporting our community through coffee
THE CAFÉ CRAWL ARTICLE BY MEL MILES
28
O UR TOWN | FOOD + BEVE RAGE
The coffee culture continues to explode around us and our community is no exception. A few weeks ago I found myself in a conversation with a dear friend living in another part of the country telling me about her recent Café Crawl with her friends. Having absolutely no idea what she was talking about, I discovered a Café Crawl is like a Bar Crawl, but with caffeine instead of alcohol. I became intrigued with the idea of going on my own Café Crawl around town and asked her to spill the “beans” on their day. Having lived in this beautiful town for all these years I couldn’t help but think that you can look in any direction and find a Café just calling your name to come into. The love of the coffee shop runs deep. It’s a place you can find inspiration, chat with old friends and meet new ones. Who can forget one of the most iconic coffee shop scenes when Rachel and Ross kissed for the first time at the Central Perk in a cliff hanging episode of Friends. Coffee being the second most traded commodity in the world, and possibly the first here in our sweet town I knew the next thing to do was plan my excursion. I couldn’t possibly crawl to every spot in town, the first time around. So I picked just five shops for my first time. I then rang a friend to join me and we were off on our adventure the very next day. The places we ventured were all amazing. Each place had its own vibe and culture. We drank great drinks, ate great food and laughed out loud so many times throughout our coffee hopping day. We made a pack that we have several more crawls to do in the future. Our town has opened up a new way for me and my fellow friend to explore. I seriously loved it, and you will too! Plan a Café Crawl, you’ll be happy you did!

disappeared. I even took some home for later. This is also a great spot to stop and then go shopping, or even ice skating across the street during the winter months. It was fun hearing the train go by. This place was buzzing with a crowd of local business people and you could see many a deal is made at this café each and every day.
Bloody Mary’s in town. The day we were in there they had a chowder that was out of this world. This place feels like living in a small town. The staff was greeting people by name, knew their orders, talked about the weather and made you feel like you were drinking a cup of joe at their kitchen table.

BLACK ROCK COFFEE BAR
This café had us crawling over to Plum Creek by the fire station. Someone recommended it when we discussed what we were doing to some other coffee lovers and I said it was already on my list! When we arrived at the cute little building they had just started their new St. Patrick’s Day menu and it was hard to decide. I ordered the Lucky Charm and she ordered the Nutty Irishman.
Walking in here just instantly made us feel cool. It was like we got invited to the best party happening after a Friday Night Lights game. Music playing in the background and the fireplace glowing and warming the room. You could hang out here all day. It was packed with people that were already enjoying their favorite drinks in hand. The drive through was busy and the staff was happy. I went with my favorite, an Americano black and my friend got one of their signature Fuel drinks. The drinks were spot on and my friend said how easy it would be to come back and just grab something through the drive through and be on her way. The location was a plus for her and close to her children’s school.
CROWFOOT VALLEY COFFEE AND CROWBAR If you could call a café a local watering hole, this is it. They have been in town for 23 years and are still a local favorite. I had a classic cappuccino and ponied right up to their bar, where they also serve one of the best homemade

Aspen & The Roaring Fork Valley, an Ideal Way to Spend a Winter-Into-Spring Holiday

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KENDALL HOULTON Aspen at night
Traveling to Chamonix, France, was not feasible last year so my family opted for an in-state, Colorado ski vacation. Visiting Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley is an ideal way to spend any holiday break. Home to the world’s first World Championships held outside of Europe, Aspen is renowned for its incredibly dreamy winter experiences and celebrity sightings. And this year is even more special because @AspenSnowmass is celebrating 75 years of skiing, offering guests four world-class mountains to choose from: Aspen Mountain, Snowmass, Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk. These mountains offer a wide variety of terrain perfect for everyone from beginner to expert and this year’s celebratory events include Luminescence in Snowmass, Winterskol in Aspen, XGames at Buttermilk and so much more!
RUNWAY TO SLOPESIDE IN MINUTES As a group of 10, we opted to stay in a vacation rental outside of Carbondale, between Glenwood Springs and Aspen. We chose this location as a home base because within 35 minutes we were either on the slopes at Aspen Snowmass or Sunlight Ski Resort near Glenwood Springs. With nearly 730 skiable acres and a 2,000 vertical foot drop, Sunlight offers big skiing at an affordable price. And you can enjoy the best après-ski fun at the world’s largest mineral hot springs pool, Glenwood Hot Springs Resort. We found that riding the local Roaring Fork Transit buses was convenient for getting to the slopes. These buses run the entirety of the Roaring Fork Valley and can get you around easily and many (but not all) routes are free. Free routes include all City of Aspen routes and all Aspen to/from Snowmass Village routes. Seniors 65 and older and children 5 and under always ride free. The Village Shuttle within Snowmass Village is also free to ride. RFTA’s real time bus information is available in an easy-to-use mobile app called Transit.

rental home in Carbondale on airbnb. Located on the banks of the Roaring Fork River, this four-bedroom, threeand-a-half-bathroom home is a 35 min drive to Aspen/Snowmass and Sunlight in Glenwood Springs. This beautiful river compound was like our own tiny resort without the crowds. With unsurpassed views of the Roaring Fork River, two fireplaces in the Great Room including radiant heating, a gourmet kitchen with amenities fit for a professional chef, and an eight-person Sundance Optima hot tub overlooking the river, we wished we could have stayed longer. For planning, you’ll want to check out how easy it is to drive to your accommodation, as some rental homes are difficult to reach in wintertime without 4-wheel drive. Luckily, Aspenwood was located down a regularly snow plowed road and the rental
property had driveway snowmelt making the home easily accessible during snowstorms. There was also a bus stop 2 minutes away and we could simply hoist our skis onto the exterior bus ski carriers, leaving the driving to someone else. And our host offered to drive us if we didn’t feel like walking to the bus stop. We love SuperHosts.
multi-destination ski passes including the Ikon Pass, Mountain Collective Pass, and Colorado Ski Country’s Gold Pass. If you need to rent skis or snowboards, Stapleton Ski Shop and Up Snowboard Rentals and Miller Sports is located in the heart of Aspen. Or better yet, reserve your skis/ snowboards with Ski Butlers who deliver all your equipment rentals directly to your accommodations. We discovered @RaggedMountainSports, an outdoor gear store located in Carbondale that offered a plethora of used and new gear that residents donate from all over the Aspen region. This was a great shop for friendly customer service vibes in the gearhead affluent ski world if you quickly need to grab a thermal base layer or a helmet. Visit Music City
Getaway to Nashville
and ‘Write Your Own Music City Story’
Write your own music story. That’s exactly what the chefs, artists, historians, musicians and impassioned locals of Nashville want visitors to do as they dive into this culturally diverse and oh-so-friendly city. Our team of local lifestyle fanatics at City Lifestyle are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Music City to present a customized visitor’s guide and exclusive GIVEAWAY* to this city rich in experiences that only Nashville can give. As the largest city in Tennessee, Nashville boasts an impressive array of destinations, including luxurious hotels such as the Sheraton Grand in the heart of downtown, Urban Cowboy, Noelle and The Hermitage Hotel, which houses the upscale restaurant Drusie and Darr, led by world-renowned chef Jean-Georges. Come and enjoy a truly elevated dining experience that reflects the new era of Nashville. When ready to absorb the historic side of the city, the centuries-old landmark and winery, Belle Meade Historic Site & Winery, offers guests “historic tours, family tours, wine and food pairings, bourbon tastings and chef-inspired food and wine pairings” that are unparalleled in their local experience. Likewise, Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery carries an incredible story of origination and bottles a remarkable 1860 family recipe that made Tennessee Whiskey world famous. Let’s talk about one of the most anticipated draws—the food scene! Three things Nashville is known for are hot chicken, barbecue, and meat & three restaurants. Nashville has amassed a lot of attention over the last 10 years for its exquisite food scene, with

several James Beard award-winning chefs and an incredible independent restaurant scene. People know how good the food scene is, but if they really want to find those independent chef-driven restaurants like Rolf and Daughters, FOLK, Bastion, Locust, or Henrietta Red, these are the chefs that garner a lot of attention that you won’t want to miss. For the art lovers at heart, Nashville’s ever-growing arts scene is as diverse and approachable as its music scene. Murals, street art, public art, art galleries and museums are all a part of experiencing Nashville’s visual art offerings. Music history venues such as the new National Museum of African American Music will complement your old favorite Frist Art Museum, Cheekwood Estate & Gardens, and Grand Ole Opry experiences. According to @visitmusiccity, “Everyone should do the Grand Ole Opry one night; it’s not just about the music, it’s a piece of history and the world’s longest running radio show.” Last but not least is the music scene. Whether you’re into blues, jazz, honky tonk, rock, symphony or quite literally any genre of music imaginable, Nashville has it all. Spend one night on Broadway hopping bar to bar, sit orchestra-side at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, tour and take in a show at the 130-year-old Ryman Auditorium, then experience a songwriter’s night at The Bluebird or The Listening Room Cafe. The music is different every night everywhere, so one is best served by referring to visitmusiccity.com for their Upcoming Concerts Calendar to soak up all the magnificent sounds.

April has us itching for outdoor entertaining, but our unpredictable Colorado spring makes it difficult. Time for a simple but elegant dinner party. Smoking meat provides a warm weather vibe, but can be done even if there is snow outside. Add a simple roasted beet-orange-goat cheese salad and an apple tart. (Buy from your local bakery. We wont tell.) Pair with an Argentinian Tempranillo or a full-bodied style Pinot Noir.

directions: Mix all spices and apply liberally to the tri-tip. Allow to rest in the refrigerator for 24 hours before smoking over grapevines.
