LIFESTYLE LETTER
December - Holidays and Giving
December 2022 PUBLISHER
Mel Miles | mel.miles@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Mary Abel | Mary.abel@citylifestyle.com
The holidays are here, and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities, or a combination of it all that reflect that best. One of my favorite articles in this month’s issue, "A Walk Down Memory Lane," written about Glenna’s favorite childhood memory of making gingerbread frosted cookies with her grandmother, sibling, and cousins every year, reminded me of some of my favorite childhood memories, as well as my own family holiday traditions I can’t wait to do each season. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a unique gift guide to make your shopping easier and make you feel good that you are giving back. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community who need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other by extending grace, empathy, and love. Blessed Yuletide Everyone!

A Holiday Tradition EMBRACE THE SEASON BY TAKING IN A PERFORMANCE OF THE NUTCRACKER, PRESENTED BY LITTLETON YOUTH BALLET AND LITTLETON BALLET ACADEMY ARTICLE BY MARY ABEL PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF LITTLETON BALLET ACADEMY
Even if you’ve never seen a performance of The Nutcracker, you’ve probably heard of it—and you definitely know its music. Originally choreographed in 1892 by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Tchaikovsky, it was adapted from E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1816 short story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” The Nutcracker is arguably the most popular ballet performance. In fact, major American ballet companies generate around 40% of their annual ticket revenues from performances of The Nutcracker. But you don’t have to travel to a major American ballet company (or pay the major ticket prices) to enjoy a performance. Since 2011, the Littleton Ballet Academy and the Littleton Youth Ballet Company have been presenting performances of the classic two-act ballet to great acclaim. Littleton Ballet Academy was founded in 2003 by Bobbie Jaramillo and her daughter Ali. Both professional dancers with impressive résumés, the mother-daughter duo wanted to share their love of ballet. “And then in 2007, we started doing performances,” says Ali. “I grew up with doing a lot of performances, and I think it’s really important. After all those lessons and classes, performing is like dessert.” Shortly after the academy started doing performances, Bobbie and Ali created a nonprofit youth ballet company for serious, upper-level students ages 7–18. “You have to be in level three or higher,” explains Ali, “and you have to come to an
audition. We’ve never rejected anyone, it’s just a formality. But it does show their interest. And then they’re accepted as part of this company.” With around 325 students enrolled in the academy and 86 dancers as part of the ballet company, both entities have a teamlike feel, something that Ali says tends to be missing in ballet. “They have uniforms and they have mentors; the mentors will teach the younger kids things like how to sew their pointe shoes.” Ali says they also try to make it as family-based as possible, “Because we’re very aware that during Nutcracker season, we tend to see them more than their parents do.” Set in 1902 Littleton, Ali says the performance has stayed true to the traditional story. “What I love about our Nutcracker is that it’s got a great family feel to it. There’s no slapstick. There are no surprises. We don’t have a creepy Drosselmeyer. We try to make it as family-friendly as we can.” Production starts with selecting the right dancer for each role. “Choosing who will play Clara is the hardest thing because almost everyone wants to be Clara,” says Ali. “This year, we have six Claras. We were thinking we were going to have five; we knew it was between about eight kids. One of them surprised us at the audition by being just so charming and amazing. We were like, well, we have six shows. I guess we’re going to have six Claras.” The entire faculty is involved in the selection process. “We talk with all the teachers, CONTINUED > D ECEMB ER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . asking questions like ‘What do you think about this kid?’ ‘Is this the right year for them to be in this role?’ ‘Are they going to get really nervous?’ And if they’re not ready for this year, they may be chosen as an understudy and perform the role next year. We try to make sure that everyone in the advanced levels has something special to do that they’re going to be really excited about.” These 2022 performances are special for all the teachers and students, as it’s the first year since 2019 that things feel back to normal. Obviously, there were no performances in 2020, and in 2021 everyone performed in masks. “I just think the biggest thing is that all our kids love The Nutcracker. You know, sometimes when you’re watching people, you can tell they don’t love what they’re doing. But I feel like all our kids love it. Our parents seem to love it. They don’t love Saturday rehearsals, but I think once they get in, they’re like, ‘This is so fun to see my child so happy.’” To purchase tickets, visit littletonballetacademy.org.

Let it Snow With no COVID restrictions and new upgrades, some of Colorado’s top ski resorts invite you to come and play ARTICLE BY LISA BAKEWELL
Summer is over, and we know the powder will start piling up any minute. And whether you’re a novice or an experienced skier, each of these featured ski resorts has something special planned for the 2022–2023 season.
ASPEN Aspen Snowmass is gearing up for another robust winter season, which includes the return of World Cup racing (March 3–5, 2023) on Aspen Mountain. Other major developments include the all-new Buttermilk base area that was transformed to include a new 9,000+ square-foot, fully electric skier services building; a renovated and rebranded Buttermilk Mountain Lodge restaurant; and an expanded bar and outdoor patio. “This major $23
million renovation will create a more seamless experience for guests as they make their way onto the mountain,” says Hannah Dixon, Communications Manager for Aspen Snowmass. Plus Aspen Snowmass is letting you in on one of its best-kept secrets—the more than 100 shrines sprinkled throughout the Aspen Snowmass quartet of mountains. Hidden from plain sight, tucked away in the trees, and kept a secret—until now—these shrines provide added adventure to your ski trip. Purchase lift tickets and season passes online or through the Aspen Snowmass app, which serves as an in-resort information hub with interactive maps, snow reports, parking status, wait times, and more. Opening day is November 24. CONTINUED >

Built on pioneering spirit, Vail celebrates 60 years of success this year. To celebrate, Game Creek Express was replaced with a high-speed, six-person chairlift for improved reliability and uphill capacity; it was repositioned to add room for a new chairlift, the Sun Down Express. Also, as a way to prioritize guest experiences this season, Vail will limit lift ticket sales. According to James O’Donnell, President of Vail Resorts’ Mountain division, “Limiting lift tickets throughout the season, alongside the big investments we’re making at our resorts and in our team members, will help us provide our guests with an experience of a lifetime this winter.” Guests are encouraged to secure lift access in advance. Guests can purchase any Epic Pass product using Epic FlexPay, which enables monthly installments with zero down payment/interest. Vail opens on November 11.
Whether you’re a novice or an experienced skier, each of these featured ski resorts has something special planned for the 2022–2023 season.
TELLURIDE
BRECKENRIDGE
This year is Telluride Ski Resorts’ 50th anniversary, and it’s celebrating with a new Plunge lift, “making access to some of its most popular expert terrain quicker and more comfortable,” says Tom Watkinson, Director of Communications. Although Telluride has a reputation for being an extreme mountain, over half of the resort is beginner or intermediate terrain. Also, Telluride has the only gondola transportation system of its kind in North America. “A destination made up of two, pedestrian-oriented towns makes the need for vehicular transportation unnecessary,” shares Watkinson. “Visitors will get around by foot, ski, or gondola.” A new high-speed, detachable Doppelmayr quad-chair upgrade (top of 9) was added to Telluride this year, which is twice as fast as its predecessor and more energy efficient. The top of 9, which is almost all solid rock, is also being lowered to make room for a new terminal and increased skier capacity, and snowmaking piping will be replaced while digging trenches for new power lines. Lift tickets are $209; the opening day is November 24.
Breckenridge spans five mountain peaks within Colorado’s distinct Ten Mile Range, which serves as a fantastic backdrop for the historic Town of Breckenridge. The connection between mountain and town is ever-present from the abundance of walk-to-lift accommodations, the BreckConnect Gondola, and ski-to-town trails. According to Sara Lococo, Senior Manager of Communication, “Nowhere else in the world can you ski from the highest chairlift in North America—Imperial SuperChair—directly into town for après.” This season, the focus is on the Rip’s Ride chairlift, which was upgraded to a high-speed quad. According to Lococo, “[It] will provide guests with faster access to Peak 8’s primary learning terrain and allow for more time spent on the snow, as well as provide easier and more convenient access from Rip’s Ride over to Peak 9.” Ticket prices vary. Purchase them online at least seven days in advance. For added value, purchase Epic Pass or Epic Day Pass products. It opens on November 11.

Grandma’s perfect classic Christmas gingerbread iced cookie ARTICLE BY GLENNA HOPE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY AUDREY DEFORD
Nothing floods my heart and soul more than memories of going to Grandma’s and making her classic gingerbread Christmas cookies. Myself, my sister, and my cousins would gather around the big kitchen table and dig in a few days before Christmas and get to spend the afternoon making what I thought were the tastiest and most special cookies in all the world. The smell of them cooking is guaranteed to put you in a festive mood, they are really easy to make, and they will keep for at least a couple of weeks, so are perfect for a busy season. CONTINUED >

Grandma’s Christmas Gingerbread Iced Cookies FOR THE GINGERBREAD: • 3.5 oz butter, cubed • 1/3 + 1/8 cup light brown soft sugar (packed) • 2 tbsp golden syrup • 1 tbsp treacle • 1 tbsp water • finely grated zest of 1 orange • 2 tsp ground ginger • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
• 1/4 tsp ground cloves • 1/2 tsp baking soda • 2 cups all-purpose flour
FOR THE ROYAL ICING: • • • •
2 + 1/3 cups powdered sugar 2 tsp lemon juice 1 large egg white food coloring, cookie decorations, edible glitter (optional)
1. Place the butter, sugar, golden syrup, treacle, water, and orange zest in a pan and heat gently while stirring until it is melted and smooth. 2. Remove the pan from the heat and beat in the spices and baking soda, followed by the flour. Mix until it forms a smooth dough, then cover the pan and place in the fridge for about an hour, until the dough is firm. 3. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line two baking trays with baking parchment. Bring the dough together into a ball and roll out on a lightly floured surface to 1/8 inch thick. Cut out shapes using cookie cutters and place them slightly spaced apart on the baking trays. Re-roll the scraps to cut out more shapes. 4. Place the trays in the freezer for 15 minutes until firm, then bake for 10-15 minutes until the cookies feel firm when lightly pressed and darken around the edges. The smaller ones will bake faster than the big ones, so try to group similar-sized shapes together on the trays. Leave to cool on the trays for 5 minutes, then transfer onto a wire rack to cool completely. 5. Once the cookies are cool, make the royal icing. Sift the powdered sugar into a bowl and add the lemon juice. Stir in the egg white a little at a time until the icing is smooth and thick but pipe-able; if you drizzle some back into the bowl, the pattern should disappear after about 8 seconds. If it is too thick, then add a little more egg white (or lemon juice if you’ve run out), and if it is too runny, then add a little more sifted powdered sugar. 6. Spoon the icing into a piping bag fitted with a 1mm plain round nozzle. Pipe designs onto the cookies (Pinterest is a great place to get inspiration for patterns!) and set them aside for 30 minutes to dry. Sprinkle with edible glitter if using and tuck in!

When it comes to kitchen design, Jann Levinsky doesn’t think much of the word “trend.” An architect by training, Jann is the manager of Showplace Cabinetry Design Center. She and her design team—Jennie Claus, Lisa Parkinson and Karen Zirkle—help homeowners design classic, timeless kitchens that won’t need another remodel for decades. With sky-high home prices and increasing interest rates, Jann’s team is pretty busy these days. “We have a lot of clients lately who have shopped around to buy a new home only to discover it makes more sense to remodel their existing home,” Jann says. “And I say, if you like your neighborhood and you like your neighbors, stay put and remodel, because you’re only increasing the value of your house.” Renovating a kitchen can be a complicated and expensive investment, but Jann and her team are the experts who will guide overwhelmed homeowners through every step of the process—and that process starts with a visit to the Parker showroom, located at The Crossings at Stonegate on Lincoln Avenue. Filled with stunning kitchen vignettes, consumers are bound to see something that fits their new-kitchen vision. For those who really don’t know where to start, Jann offers this tip: “Get on Houzz and Pinterest. If there’s even just one element in that picture—a fixture, a tile, a color—print it and circle it so I know what you like and where your tastes are.” But don’t worry (or consider yourself warned): Jann will not allow you to wander down the wrong path. “I don’t do trends. The kitchen has to reflect the architecture of the house. I’m not going to take a craftsman house and throw in a very contemporary kitchen or bathroom. It just makes no sense.” And if you think you can’t afford a professional kitchen designer, think again—what seems like an added expense will pay for itself with a smooth renovation process and years of enjoyment without regrets. So go ahead and take the first step—make an appointment with a kitchen designer. CONTINUED > D ECEMB ER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/CAST L E R O C K

P R E V I O U S P A G E : The owners of this Parker kitchen didn’t veer from the original layout, but the perimeter cabinetry was replaced
with Showplace rustic alder, and the massive, 12-foot island was painted moss-green with vintage brushing. To open the space for multiple cooks, the range was replaced with a cooktop, while the oven and microwave were moved to the opposite end of the run.

TIMELESS TOUCHES
From left: Jann Levinsky, Karen Zirkle, Jennie Claus, Lisa Parkinson
SOFT TOUCH
In a room made of hard surfaces and straight edges, choosing a backsplash tile with subtle color and curvy lines adds some much-needed visual softness.
MEET THE SHOWPLACE DESIGN TEAM
Why should you hire a kitchen designer? Jann Levinsky A kitchen designer can create a detailed plan that works within a client’s budget. We help make thoughtful decisions and have everything in place to avoid costly mistakes or changes. And we keep everything on track and on time.
Karen Zirkle
PRETTY PENDANTS
Good, functional lighting is everything in a busy kitchen, but big kitchen islands topped with pretty pendants make the space warm and inviting.
We see things from a different perspective. Our experience and training enable us to see details or imagine possibilities beyond what many contractors and/or clients can envision. We know how to balance different textures, colors, lines and overall scale.
Jennie Claus We are here to help educate our clients with options they may not know exist, offer advice on how to improve the overall function of their kitchen, and coordinate all aspects of the project. Our job is to guide them in the right direction, one decision at a time.
Lisa Parkinson Our clients have full access to our expertise and our commitment to designing a kitchen that functions properly and has the look and feel the client envisioned. Each of our designers listen and incorporate the client’s ideas with our knowledge to create something we know the client will love.
CHEF’S DREAM
For serious cooks and avid entertainers, quality, high-end appliances are a must. And stainless steel will never go out of style.

ARTICLE BY MEL MILES | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW HARLAN
O U T S I D E T H E B OX THE PACE CENTER ART GALLERY DELIGHTED OUR COMMUNITY WITH CURATED ART EXHIBITION OF MOSAICS The art gallery at the Parker PACE Center hosted a beautiful art exhibit Mosaics entitled Outside the Box. It presented the art of 22 members from the Colorado Mosaic Artists organization, all of whom rose to the challenge of taking their chosen art form “out of the box” by giving it a distinctly modern twist. Artists used a wide selection of materials, styles, and methods to demonstrate the seemingly boundless range of possibilities for mosaic art.

CURATOR’S STATEMENT: I absolutely love when we get “out of the box” here at the PACE Center. I can’t thank Betsy Hicks, director of the Colorado Mosaic Artists organization, enough for bringing me in on her idea of pushing her members to rethink the ancient art form of mosaic. The second she said the title, I knew I was going to see some truly imaginative works by artists seeking to incorporate familiar materials in a totally unexpected manner. — Rose Fredrick

The City Lifestyle
Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
