Come. As a child I would spend many a day holding an umbrella standing outside hoping for it to rain, excited for what spring may bring. During the month of April, as a young child, my mother would have my sister and I make umbrella shaped baskets and fill them with trinkets, candy and flowers and then leave them on the doorknobs of our neighbors’ homes. April, Rain, Umbrellas and ultimately baskets of flowers always ended with Something Good May Come, and it always came. When I decided to start this publication, it was quite the array of emotions. The launch date was postponed a number of times, and there were times I was over-

DoCR Behind the Bar at Local Hot Spot Burley Brewing On Wednesday, March 10th, Dads of Castle Rock Community Outreach took over Burley Brewing for a fun event the whole community was able to enjoy. General Manager, Lisa Miles explained nothing warms her heart more than collaborating on events like this that benefit the community. The volunteer dads (that currently has over 2,000 members) gathered to work for tips during the event that was then 100% donated to DoCR so they could continue helping out those in need. Guests enjoyed fantastic Burley beer, food from local food truck Coast to Coast and once again proved that they have the energy and drive to continue to make Castle Rock a community everyone loves living in.

IT’S NOT EVERY DAY THAT YOU MEET A MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING, WHISKEY-LOVING OPTICIAN WHO IS ALSO A COLORADO NATIVE ... so today is your lucky day. Introducing Thomas Cervantes, the Director of Operations at Ascend Eyes. Born, raised and educated in Denver, Cervantes not only loves providing eye health, he is also on the board of the Optician Association, advocating strongly for more training and continuing education for opticians. For the past four years, Thomas has been giving the gift of clear vision and high fashion to those of us who need a little help in that department. By providing personalized service

with a wide range of designer frames, Ascent Eyes is the one-stop shop for your yearly eye exams and any correction that may be needed. “The one bit of wisdom I would impart to others is that you can have clear vision and still have eye health issues,” says Cervantes. “A yearly exam will test for many of the things that have to do with the health of the eyes, and help that may be needed. Don’t rely on failing vision to signal the need for an eye check-up.” Thankfully, Ascent Eyes provides everything you and your family would need for healthy eyes and vision, along with the latest in designer frames. Come in to Ascent Eyes and let Cervantes help you see things clearly. Ask him to tell you about his harrowing experience on Longs Peak and how he is actively conquering fear in his life. His driving factor each day? “Helping people see better, and then watching the difference it makes in their everyday life.” Thank you Thomas, for the gift of vision. Ascent Eyes has two locations for your convenience. Call today to make an appointment in Parker 303.805.7300 or Castle Pines 303.688.3022.

FINDING YOUR MOUNTAIN OASIS VERMEJO RESERVE PARK OFFERS UNFORGETTABLE OUTDOOR EXCURSIONS, HIGH-COUNTRY LUXURY, AND GLIMPSE INTO TED TURNER CONSERVATION
THE ONLY LIVING THINGS WE’VE SEEN IN THE PAST 45 MINUTES ARE A HERD OF GRAZING ELK AND AN OUT-OF-PLACE FEDEX DRIVER ZIPPING PAST IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. We’ve just pulled up to the historic stone mansions, cottages, and central hunting lodge at Vermejo Reserve Park, an ecological-minded luxury guest ranch in northern New Mexico, owned by media mogul, conservationist, and philanthropist Ted Turner. And we’ve just found a mountain oasis. We’re here for a long weekend to soak in the great outdoors with such excursions as fishing, hiking, archery, and shooting. And there’s a lot to explore. At 920 square miles, Vermejo is the largest privately owned tract of land in the United States. But Vermejo’s superpower is the spirit of conservation and innovation driven by the owner himself, Ted Turner, which has trickled down to every staff person you meet. Marketing manager Deann McBride joins us on a hike to Vermejo’s own Castle Rock, a sandstone formation surrounded by high-mountain grassland. Native Americans once roamed here. Billy the Kid and Louis L’Amour did too. “Two things I love about Vermejo,” Deann says. “One is we’ve got our own private national park on 550,000 pristine acres to get out and explore. And then there’s CONTINUED >

Ted’s vision to get this all back to before the West was won, to save everything. It’s a continual process.” Vermejo is a paradise for hunters and fly fishers, artists, and photographers trying to escape the concrete jungle’s confines and see a living, breathing Western landscape being carefully curated. Herds of elk, deer, and feral horses roam the vast property. One of several success stories of Vermejo is the reintroduction of the Rio Grande cutthroat trout. Of course, the main attraction here is the renowned Castle Rock bison, a genetically pure herd with roots to the famous Yellowstone herd. It’s been a busy day. We sit down to dinner in the main lodge, a sprawling log-hewn building that houses the dining facilities and operations hub. Not too long ago, we’re told, before Ted Turner bought the property in 1996, ranch cowboys used to throw down pallets in front of the stone fireplace after a day’s labor. This evening’s dinner guests chat in buzzy excitement about their afternoon hunting ventures and what promises to be a hearty chef-prepared meal. The group seated next to us recounts their unforgettable excursion to harvest a bison. Down with one shot to the heart. The group was invited to participate in a culling of some of the aging bison—a way to strengthen the herd genetics. The dinner guests’ whopper story is the essence of why so many travelers make their way to Vermejo to take part in the incredible conservation work being done by Ted Turner’s staff of wildlife managers and scientists who are rebuilding the wild spaces and wildlife of the great American West. We’re staying next door at the ranch’s original residence called Casa Grande, built-in 1909 by Chicago grain magnate William Bartlett. He moved his entire family West with the hopes of

alleviating his son’s tuberculosis. He ended up building a family compound that included opulent homes for his children, the hunting lodge, and other guest cottages. Casa Grande, with its marble-columned hallways and grand living spaces, is a 25,000-square-foot stone mansion whose seven renovated rooms can be booked individually or as a full buyout for larger parties. After dinner, we wander Casa Grande, that include a conservatory, sunroom, and sumptuous dining room with the original owner’s China on display. Complete renovations of Case Grande were finished in 2012, and each room was painstakingly appointed in antiques and other fashions to reflect its turn-of-the-20th-century aesthetic. We lounge on the living room’s deep blue velvet sofas, browsing a few of the hundreds of books lining the shelves around us, soaking in the history of not just this historical ranching property but Ted Turner’s own storied life. A rare Steinway grande itches to be played. And from the second-story balcony overlooking the room, of course, a mounted bison head holds court.

MODERN TIMES In 1928, Hans Haupt invented the pocket umbrella. In Vienna, she was a student studying sculpture when she developed a prototype for an improved compact foldable umbrella for which she received a patent in September 1929. Loveland, Ohio obtained a patent for his “working folding umbrella.” Another fun fact: Umbrellas have also been crafted into hats as early as 1880 and at least as recently as 1987. Golf umbrellas, one of the largest sizes in common use, are typically around 62 inches across but can range anywhere from 60 to 70 inches.
ORIGINS OF THE TERM UMBRELLA
Umbrellas are now a consumer product with a large global market.
The word “umbrella” comes from the Latin root word “umbra,”

The artisans made the curved handles for the umbrellas out of hardwoods like ebony and were well paid for their efforts. ENGLISH STEELS COMPANY In 1852, Samuel Fox invented the steel ribbed umbrella design. Fox also founded the “English Steels Company” and claimed to have invented the steel ribbed umbrella as a way of using up stocks of farthingale stays, the steel stays used in women’s corsets. After that, compact collapsible umbrellas were the next major technical innovation in umbrella manufacture, which arrived over a century later.

JILL GREW UP IN LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS AND ONE OF HER FAVORITE MEMORIES WAS DOING CERAMICS WITH HER MOM, OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS AND NEIGHBORS, AROUND HER KITCHEN TABLE. Fast forward about 30 years when her sweet husband gave her a gift certificate for a pottery lesson to learn how to throw on the wheel. From then on, she was hooked! When they first moved to Colorado, they shared a back-yard fence with a precious 2-year old (& her parents) named Allie. Most evenings, they would gather at the fence, surrounded by Aspen trees, for a little visit. Allie called the Aspens “twinkle trees” because of the lovely sight and sound of the leaves blowing in the breeze. That’s how TwinkleTreePottery got its name. Nowadays, Jill and her husband enjoy their home on five acres in Castle Rock, Colorado, with a gorgeous view of the Rocky Mountains from their back deck (and from her studio). WALKING THE WALK
A JOURNEY DOWN THE WINDING LIFE PATH OF UNASSUMING SPIRITUAL LEADER FRANCIS CHAN
FROM THE PULPIT OF A THRIVING MEGACHURCH OF MORE THAN 5,000 MEMBERS AND GROWING, TO A HOME IN THE POOREST REGION OF HONG KONG. From authoring a New York Times bestseller, to being surrounded by people struggling to make it by on just 50 cents a day. For most, it probably sounds like a tale of riches to rags; an unfortunate result of someone falling upon hard times. But for Francis Chan, it’s exactly what his soul needed—an opportunity to fulfill his God-given purpose of becoming a man who can truly say he practices what he preaches. And it was all by his own choice (with maybe a little guidance from above). Francis, born in San Francisco, was raised in a traditional Chinese home and navigated a challenging upbringing. His mother died during childbirth. His father remarried, then his stepmother died in a car accident when he was 8. His father remarried again, then, when Francis was 12, died of cancer. Francis was around 14 when he was introduced to a youth group by a friend. “I fell in love with Jesus,” he says, explaining that it was

then he decided if there really was a Heaven and Hell, it didn’t make sense to spend his life doing anything other than telling people about Him. Twenty-six and newly married, Francis and his wife Lisa founded Cornerstone Community Church in Simi Valley, California in the early 90s, beginning with 30 people. Within the first two months, the church grew to 100. In 2000, the church grew even more, to 1,600. By 2008, Cornerstone Community Church was one of the largest in Ventura County and Francis’ new book “Crazy Love” was a New York Times bestseller. CONTINUED >

Watch the full interview @ CityLifestyle.com! Then, in 2010, Francis decided to leave it all. But, he wasn’t leaving God. He was separating himself from the megachurch that had started in his living room as he and other elders began to question its direction. “Was this really what the Church is meant to be? Is this all God had in mind when he created His Church in the first place?” Francis questions in his second book Letters to the Church. “We began to wonder if our definition of a church actually fit God’s definition.” “Everything had grown to be very dependent upon one person,” he continues. “The Bible tells us that every member of the body has a gift that is necessary to the functioning of the church. When I looked at what went on in Cornerstone, I saw me and a few other people using our gifts, while thousands just came and sat in the sanctuary for an hour and a half and then went home.” After leaving Cornerstone, Francis wrestled with what the next step was. He and Lisa ended up selling their Simi Valley house and moving their family of six at the time overseas to India, Thailand and China. And the $1 million his bestselling book made in the first year, plus the money it continues to make? Francis signed it all over to a charitable gift fund helping the poor and victims of human trafficking. “We witnessed the simplicity of the lifestyles in rural Thailand, and the joy of the men and women who served widows and orphans day in and day out” “You meet these believers that just blow your mind. It’s everything the Bible talks about,” Francis says, inspired by those he’s met throughout his travels. “Some of the
