Is giving a one-way street? Is it only the client or recipient of a person’s generosity that receives something from a person’s generosity? Actually the answer is no! In fact, some would argue that the person who gives of themselves actually benefits more than the recipient of their generosity. And that is why people give of themselves although many do not realize it. But subconsciously and physiologically the donor,

Recently at Hide In Plain Sight’s annual gala, three couples who know each other, enjoyed a competitive fundraising activity and have subsequently gathered for a party and in the next month will travel together on a vacation. So the generosity to help others actually has built a new friendship and strengthened another. The Joy of Giving is something I have seen time and again in my 26 year professional fundraising career. In fact I have found that when people give of themselves and experience this Joy of Giving, it prompts them to give more. It is almost like this Joy of Giving is a drug that people become addictive to. A donor told me once that the more he gives, the more he gets. It became a vicious circle for him!

So the next time you have the chance to give a random act of kindness, or volunteer to help someone or make a donation to a local non-profit, go for it! And you won’t need to expect something in return. It will happen automatically. You’ll feel the Joy of Giving! The Joy of Giving is directly tied to being grateful, thankful. With the holidays coming up it is the perfect time to experience the Joy of Giving, but you can have it every day

In 2020, during the pandemic, we awarded 31 students over $113,000. Our average in the 2020-21 school year was $3,600 per student. The average GPA of these 31 students during the pandemic when they couldn’t go to school and were in virtual lockdown like the rest of us was 3.69 GPA!!! HIPS is very proud of these students’ performance and use of the funds provided by our very generous benefactors. We support homeless or students in poverty who attend a community college, trade school and then transfer to a 4 year university. Our scholarships are best used to remove the barriers of food and housing insecurities, transportation, technology, child care and general living expenses.

Castle Rock Lifestyle | November 2021
Basically we seek to remove the barriers or stressors our scholars face while pursuing their education. Currently we award new applicants between the ages of 17-25 and then intend to follow them every year until they gain their certificate or degree and see them placed in the workforce. After our first 5 years we found that of our first 186 scholars, 116 had graduated and a remaining 55 were still enrolled. That equates to a 92% success rate. Pre-pandemic we saw a very high job placement primarily because of our partnerships with the community colleges and trade schools as they have to achieve a high placement rate to retain accreditation of their curricula. As for IMPACT: Besides putting these students in a position where they can achieve their education, become competitive in the job market, earn a living and sustainable wage and set the example for others

myself to her. At that time there were over 900 homeless students in the DCSD. By June of 2015 Zoe received HIPS first scholarship of $3,000. HIPS followed and supported Zoe for the next 4 years as she attended Metro State University and graduated from there in May of 2019……debt free! Zoe used her scholarships for food and housing insecurities so she could have a safe place to achieve her academic goals. Zoe graduated with a 4.0 GPA and in the summer of 2019 was invited to and attended an international research project at Cambridge University in England. When she returned Zoe joined the HIPS Board of Directors in April of 2020 and from October of 2020 to June of 2021 ran HIPS social media efforts while participating in a very decisive way in several policy committees bringing the perspective of a homeless student to a Board of people who had never encountered this adversity in their lives. Zoe made a real significant difference in reforming some of our fundamental policies. In July of 2021 Zoe resigned from the HIPS Board of Directors as she went off to Humboldt University in northern California to pursue her Master’s degree in Research. Kayla grew up living through multiple unsolvable problems that changed her through her works of positivity and perseverance. Her mom was always sick having a tumor, gastric bypass and problems with prescriptions and alcohol. Her dad did not go to college so he worked proletarian jobs. Since Kayla’s mom was so sick they scarcely had any money. In 2015, when Kayla was 15, her mom passed away so Kayla took the initiative of being the mom in her family and cared for her younger sister over the next several years. When her dad remarried, Kayla and her sister went to live with their grandparents. Through all of this Kayla decided she wouldn’t let her past hurt her, but she would push to strive through life. She has used her past life experiences, of which she had no say in the decisions or outcomes, to push through the negativity and sad times to find the positive. Since I first met Kayla over 3 years ago now, she has lost 70 pounds! During the pandemic in 2020, Kayla lost her job, became employed but because she had to work so many hours while going to school she lost her Medicaid insurance. Kayla is a 4 x returning HIPS scholar who has graduated from ACC with a 3.69 GPA and is now in her senior year at UCCS in Colorado Springs. She attends school full-time and has two part-time jobs. Kayla has a 3.6 GPA and will graduate next spring with a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science. Kayla is a strong, determined and independent young woman who makes responsible decisions

Knock Knock! Who’s There? NEW NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION KNOCK KNOCK ANGELS COLORADO
WHAT SYMBOLIZES AN ANGEL? AN ANGEL IS A MESSENGER OF GOD, characterized as having human form with wings and a halo. The word suggests goodness, and is often used to refer to someone who offers comfort and aid to others in times of trouble. So it came as no surprise when locals Scott Matthias and Barrett Miller along with their spouses announced that they would be forming a new non profit to expand their wings further called Knock Knock Angels Colorado. Scott Matthias started his career as a realtor in 1986. As a Broker Associate with RE/MAX Professionals – ColoradoRealEstate.com Team he continues to inspire and help those around him each and every day. Scott throughout the years has committed even more time to his craft by receiving and obtaining certifications and designations of GRI, CRS, CSA, CDPE. Scott was the recipient of The Colorado REALTOR of The Year in 2016. The award is the most prestigious award given to a CAR member and is a culmination of a distinguished career within the REALTOR® organization— at the local, state and national levels. In addition to activity within the association, the REALTOR® of the Year is a person active at the community level and successful in business.

Scott currently serves in the role of 2021 NAR Region XI District Vice President. But at the end of the day what shines through is a man who cares deeply about helping people with having a home to call their own. His tireless dedication to this cause has left a mark on thousands of families to date. Many factors played into the formation of the Colorado Chapter of Knock Knock Angels Scott explains.” After the door was closed in Mexico after 22 years with our missionaries being held up at gun point, I was looking for another door to open. I knew exactly what I wanted to do but wanted to do it locally. Having lost my Veteran Dad and his best friend, also a Veteran within 45 days of each other to COVID. I knew I wanted to honor them in what we did. My wife Lori and I sat down to watch the National Association of REALTORS Good Neighbor Awards from our kitchen table. This was due to our national convention becoming virtual because of COVID. These are awards given each year to the top 5 REALTORS across the country with their philanthropic organizations. When we watched Vickie Lobo and her organization Knock Knock Angels we looked at each other and immediately knew we wanted to do something similar!” The original Knock Knock Angels resides in California. Founder Vickie Lebo is a cancer survivor. After having cancer her life changed. She went on a mission of service to her community. She aimed to get the community, to demonstrate caring, and to love thy neighbor. She founded Knock Knock Angels because she wanted to give people a fresh start after traumatic events including domestic violence, homelessness, neglect, or addiction. Scott commented, “ My vision is like Vickie’s vision and that is to spread it across

the State of Colorado mainly serving Veterans. Barrett’s and my focus will be to serve Veterans. I wanted to also mention that Barrett lost her Veteran Dad to COVID a week after my Dad. So our commitment to Veterans is near and dear to our hearts. However, we will allow other locations around the State to serve those that Vickie serves in California which would be single moms and abused women.” October 7th was the Chapter’s first day, and it couldn’t have been more of a blessing .Scott serving as the President and Barrett serving as the Vice President along with all their volunteers spent the day doing what they do best. Helping others get a home. The Chapter’s first two recipients were James, proud Marine Veteran and Tyrone, proud Navy Veteran. Just days before these two men were homeless heroes. October 7th, 2021 Knock Knock Angels Colorado changed all that and helped move them into apartments and furnish ed them from top to bottom. The date of October 7th to start the organization was not by accident. But by beautiful design. Barrett and Tom Miller, who also own Check Mate Moving wanted to honor their son Nick who was killed in a fatal car crash with his birthday living on each year with the formation of Knock Knock Angels Colorado. Family and friends of the Millers continue to be inspired by their commitment to their philanthropy in the community in honor of their son each and every day of their lives. This is only the first of many firsts for future Veterans. Scott added that he really,” wants to get the word out for additional Veterans to serve and to have people call us with their new or near new items before donating elsewhere.” To learn more, donate and volunteer: https://www.knockknockangels.org.

THE NORTHROP GROUP OF COMPASS HEADS FROM DENVER TO EL SALVADOR TO BUILD HOMES FOR TWO FAMILIES IN NEED “SOMETIMES PEOPLE JUST NEED A SIMPLE INVITATION,” GIVEBACK HOMES FOUNDER CAROLINE PINAL SAYS. That simple invitation was more than enough for Jessica Northrop and her real estate team (The Northrop Group) from Compass. During the last week of September, Jessica enlisted the help of her team and other Compass Realtors to travel to El Salvador and help build two homes for two deserving families in the Los Lotes community. In total, Jessica was joined by Jayd Wells, Cali Forbes, Jeff Bua, Geo Flores and Giveback Homes founder Caroline Pinal. For Northrop, the trip is part of over 38

six years of partnership with Giveback Homes which includes building and funding several homes in Nicaragua and annual Team Build Days throughout the Denver area. “We’re passionate about giving back! Jessica adds. “Every home we sell helps build a home for a family in need…both internationally and at home in our local community. There’s more that we can always be doing and this is an opportunity to do just that. We’re proud to partner with Giveback Homes, a wonderful organization that truly makes a difference and leaves a lasting legacy and makes a positive difference in the world.” “We are grateful to all of our wonderful clients who support and CONTINUED >

This also aligns with the Compass mission of “helping everyone find their place in the world”. Compass as a company is dedicated to giving back and 100% of real estate transactions result in a donation to the community. In total, Compass Cares aims to contribute $10M in funds and skills-based volunteering to local organizations. During the trip, Northrop and her team specifically helped two families: Juan Carlos and María Eugenia and their three children as well as María Isabel and her son Cristian. The current homes of both families consisted of a structure made of tree trunks and wood, forming a single room without divisions. The roof and walls were made of sheets, along with a dirt floor, which turns into mud during a storm.
