Tradition's Tribute AUGUST. The bittersweet month of summer where the school bells ring and the trappings of routine return. Make no mistake—the dog days of summer are upon us, the pools are still open and the fair is in town. Life is good. Whether you’re in the market for a corn dog, gourmet sandwich or a little lasso action, the 101st Douglas County Fair and Rodeo has the essentials that please and the activities that excite the kids beyond belief. Heritage weighs with those longer in the tooth, but the youngsters still need to cavort, and this month we cater to both.

Gracing our very cover this month is “100th Douglas County Fair and Rodeo,” Cindy’s vibrant tribute to local heritage and the winner of the 2018 Art Poster Contest. We’ll let kids be kids. Professional children’s photographer and dream portrait guru Kaleigh Gibb of Wonderstruck Photography counsels us on the best way to capture your kids on camera—and it’s easier than you think. “SHE FOUND HERSELF DRAWN TO THE SURPRISE ELEMENT, MARVELING AT THE FLUID ACTION OF THE PIGMENT MINGLING WITH THE WATER TO DEPOSIT AS PASSION ON PAPER.”
SHE CHOSE THE RIGHT PATH. Selecting the solid commercial art program over the fine art curriculum due to its income potential was assuredly the responsible route, even if her heart lay elsewhere. Despite her desire to depict beauty on a substrate, the fact that she was dynamite at commercial art design only compounded the verdict. Cindy Welch lived her priorities, and her future family’s foundation would surpass all other needs and wants. Life’s way of upending itself eventually breathed "Castle Rock Fire Department"
the gift of self-actualization into Cindy’s existence. In 2007 she opted to do something sensibly selfish when she made her return to the world of watercolor—an endeavor performed strictly for the sheer pleasure of practice and nothing else. She found herself drawn to the surprise element, marveling at the fluid action of the pigment mingling with the water to deposit as passion on paper. She also found she had unleashed the career that shimmered behind the scenes in her psyche. CONTINUED >

Cindy’s mastery of the most unforgiving medium is imbued in her work, now published in books and hanging in exhibitions, galleries and private collections. While her method of enhancing realism with the hues of the summer flowers has gifted her with numerous honors and awards, she has remained grateful, eternally humble for her epiphany and the manifest mandate of the Almighty. Castle Rock has warmly embraced Cindy and the watercolors that so artistically acknowledge the town’s landmarks and rich history. Atop a host of accolades, she was awarded top honors in the 2018 Art Poster contest for her painting “100th Douglas County Fair and Rodeo” and recently unveiled a watercolor of the Castle Rock Museum, commissioned by the Historic Preservation Board

Pull Off a Clas sic K ids’ Birthday Pa r t y
ARTICLE MAIN HARPER EVENT DESIGNS
IT’S BECOME THE TREND TO THROW LAVISH BIRTHDAY PARTIES FOR KIDS, BUT WITH THAT COMES THE STRESS OF PERFECTION AND A BILL THAT’S UNDOUBTEDLY MORE THAN YOU BARGAINED FOR. Why not consider returning to the original classic of a simple but fun celebration in the comfort of your own home? It's the best birthday destination all the way around. It's fair to say that most children anticipate their special day all year long. Making it a blast is a snap with a few creative ideas and some classically novel tips. Simply host a traditional get-together with fun food, party decor, great activities and a take-home memento for the kids to remember. That's it. This is truly all you need to create fun memories in a stress-free environment. PERSONAL INVITATIONS Check out your local art supply store, and help your child create their own handmade invitations. Let your child be creative and part of the process. Who else remembers the days of receiving a colorful, handmade birthday invitation from a friend? It wasn’t a phone call, text message, Facebook post or even an e-vite to your mom’s email address informing you of the party. It was much more personal. Nothing beat the feeling of having your friend hand you an invitation and in utter and pure delight say, “I hope you can come!” Hosting your child’s birthday party at home in a traditional and true classic birthday party style always hits the spot. DECORATIONS AND FAVORS Use simple and colorful embellishments with a classic theme—colorful balloons, traditional party favors, floating garland overhead and no-frills paper cut-outs look great placed around the house and yard.

CLASSIC KIDS’ BIRTHDAY PARTY
(CON TI N UED)
BASIC FUN ACTIVITIES Create a Classic Photo Booth with silly wigs, colorful costumes and accessories. Let the children take each other’s pictures with a Polaroid camera for instant fun. Arrange an Area to Make Birthday Cards with construction paper, markers, stamps, buttons, glue, paint and stickers. Your child will now receive sentimentally special, handmade birthday cards from their friends at the party. Designate a Play Room and decorate it with toys and items the kids can just free-play with. No need to hurry into the next planned activity; they can interact and just be together. Let them use their imaginations, hang out with each other and actually socialize. Not every moment of the party needs to be programmed and timed. This also allows for the day to remain stress-free. FOOD FUN AND BIRTHDAY CAKE What are your child’s favorites? Think of something simple, nourishing and fun, like fresh-squeezed lemonade and fruit smoothies, a mac 'n' cheese bar with tons of fun toppings and fruit kebabs. A “candy store table” is also a big hit. Fill it will different candies and treats for each child to make their own to-go bag. This is also an excellent place to put the most important element of the birthday celebration: the birthday cake. One of our favorite traditions is making a homemade birthday cake, with the birthday child as the host or hostess of their own celebration. Like carving a pumpkin for Halloween or decorating cookies at Christmas, this tradition we hold for our family members has become an equally important annual celebration. These special and personal cakes are made with love; they don’t have to be perfect. We love making homemade rainbow cakes with candies and sprinkles! Throwing a fun and memorable party for children can be an easy and stress-free endeavor when you plan a classic event. The result? You’ll enjoy the party as much as the children do.

BARK IT UP
If your dog doesn’t settle for plain, kick these treats up a notch by incorporating some of these dog-safe fruits and vegetables: + BANANAS—In moderation, bananas are great treats for dogs. Just beware of the sugar content—they shouldn’t be part of your dog’s regular diet. + BLUEBERRIES—Blueberries are a superfood full of antioxidants and fiber. Try these as a substitute to training treats. + CARROTS—Carrots are a great low-calorie snack high in beta-carotene and fiber. Chomping on them is also great for your dog’s chompers. + GREEN BEANS—Full of fiber and low in calories, plain green beans are great prepared any way! + WATERMELON—Filled with vitamins and potassium, this summer treat is sure to be your pup’s new favorite. For those dog days of summer, watermelon is a great way to keep your dog hydrated! Just be sure to remove the rind and seeds. Learn more about safe food for your four-legged friends at AKC.org.

LEARN YOUR CAMERA. Whether it’s a professional-grade camera or your cell phone, take a minute to look through the features of your device and understand how to use it well.
