New routines, new clothes and new school supplies often come to mind in August. And because we dedicated an issue to both the men and women of our community earlier this year, it would only be right to celebrate some of our sweetest residents: kids and pets! In this issue, we introduce you to the area’s largest youth soccer program, NCFC Youth. On Page 30, we share how NCFC creates a unique pipeline of players, from tiny tykes to elite professionals. But what about our furry residents? There’s no doubt we have many serious pet lovers in our area. We have included some of Cary’s cutest fur babies, submitted to

J & S NEW YORK PIZZA BRINGS A TASTE OF THE BIG APPLE TO CARY

A

lthough J & S New York Pizza is a relatively new shop in Cary, the Cammarata family has been serving up homemade dough, sauce and other

Italian dishes since 1980. Josephine and Silvio Cammarata were born and raised in Sicily, Italy. They each came to America separately, not knowing each other. Josephine came in the 1960s, and Silvio arrived in 1972. One evening, the two met at a New York City Italian disco and fell in love at first sight. They married in 1974, while Silvio was in the construction business working on skyscrapers in New York City. When Josephine was pregnant with their first child, she told

“IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT YOU DO OR WHERE YOU DO IT, AS LONG AS YOU CONSISTENTLY PUT IN THE WORK AND PROGRESSIVELY GET BETTER OVER TIME.” PEOPLE OFTEN OVERTHINK THEIR WORKOUT PROGRAM, ASSUMING THEY NEED HIGH-END EQUIPMENT AND HEAVY WEIGHTS TO ACHIEVE LASTING RESULTS. Not the case. In fact, there are only two things you need to see success with training: consistency and progression. It doesn’t matter what you do or where you do it, as long as you consistently put in the work and progressively get better over time. These four workouts will have your heart pumping and muscles working with little to no equipment. And the best part is you can do them in the comfort of your home! When performing with light weight or body weight, I reply on compound movements, which allow multiple muscles to work at the same time. This maximizes energy output, makes your body work harder and helps you see results faster. If you’re new to training, I recommend breaking these exercises down into single movements. Once you’ve mastered a movement, begin adding them together. The four exercises are one circuit. Complete the first exercise then rest for 20 to 30 seconds before moving to the next one. Do this until you’ve completed all four exercises. That’s one round! Start with three rounds, and as you get stronger, add more rounds. Document what you do so the next time you attempt it, you know how to improve. To progress, you have to get better over time, so try to push a little more each time you work out. MOLLY GOLDSTON AND VOLUNTEERS HELP RESCUE DOGS FIND A FOREVER HOME

ARTICLE ALEXANDRA STREIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY BLISSMORE PHOTOGRAPHY AND THE TRAN FAMILY

Cary Lifestyle | August 2019

UPON ENTERING THE GATES OF THE WAKE FOREST-BASED ANIMAL RESCUE SAVING GRACE NC, ONE GETS A SENSE OF UTTER JOY. At first sight, Saving Grace appears to be a happy farm where friendly dogs roam freely while interacting with loving volunteers and inquisitive visitors. However, behind the scenes, Molly Goldston and her dedicated volunteers and foster families work tirelessly around the clock to ensure the safe transport and care of hundreds of dogs. Saving Grace was Molly’s longtime vision. An avid animal lover and Meredith College graduate, Molly worked for the SPCA of Wake County immediately after college. There, she became increasingly interested in animal behavior and developed a yearning to reach the most rural communities in North Carolina. Soon after, Molly turned her grandmother’s 100-year-old farm into an animal safe haven where Molly and her team have been able to find loving forever homes to more than 20,000 dogs. None of it could be possible without her network of foster families, like the Tans. Nancy Tan—along with her children, Katie and Jack—have been fostering for Saving Grace for years. They foster puppies 75% of the year and have three Saving Grace dogs of their own that they adopted.

GIVING BACK

(CON TI N U ED)

While the outside of the farm is cheery with flowers on every corner and bright pink structures for the animals, running such a large animal rescue does have its challenges. The medical costs are relatively high, and donations are needed in order for Saving Grace to expand its facility and create a structure with washrooms for its volunteers. The facility is able to home, on average, 120 dogs at one time. The hope is that with continued donations, along with support from volunteers and the community, the rescue will be able to reach even more dogs in the years to come. OUR TOWN

ARTICLE CAROLINE BARNHILL PHOTOGRAPHY BLISSMORE PHOTOGRAPHY

FROM BEING NAMED ONE OF THE “BEST PLACES TO LIVE IN THE U.S.” to its recognition as one of the nation’s “Top Towns for Families,” Cary has claimed the top spot of many “best of” lists over the years. The town has no shortage of fun activities for families, says Dwayne Jones, head of recreation for the Town of Cary. Dwayne has worked for the town for more than 20 years and has witnessed, firsthand, its growth not only in population but also programming. “We listen to our community on what types of events and activities they want to see,” Dwayne says. “We understand our families want to be active, so we provide plenty of choices for our residents to enjoy, from sports-focused day camps for kids to cultural events downtown for families.” This summer, Downtown Cary Park is buzzing on select Wednesday nights with its Park After Dark series, featuring food trucks and live entertainment. Prefer the water? Head to the Bond Park Boathouse on the first Friday of the month now through October for Bands, Bites & Boats, where families can enjoy after-hours boat rentals while listening to great music and enjoying local fare.

What’s Hot in Homes Large kitchens and entertaining spaces continue to be popular, along with high-tech media like wireless speakers and security systems, top-ofthe-line appliances, quartz countertops, wide-plank wood floors and textured wallpaper accent walls.

Explore the Outdoors Outdoor living spaces, pools complete with pool houses, ecofriendly solar panels and meticulous landscapes are highly coveted features in luxury homes.

Look for Experience Homebuyers in the luxury home market should always work with an experienced agent who can help them decide what can and cannot be changed about a property. For example, location and yard size are permanent, while anything cosmetic can be customized and improved.

Plan Ahead For sellers, Linda recommends planning as far ahead as possible when choosing to put their house on the market. Consult with a seasoned realtor who can advise which projects should be tackled before listing. Making certain improvements in advance can help a home sell faster, and for top dollar, so updating old trends is a must. August 2019 | Cary Lifestyle

RETHINKING COACH EDUCATION NCFC Youth offers benefits to more than just its players. The program relies heavily on its coaches, and NCFC is committed to ensuring they are among the best in the nation. While the more elite levels of play have paid professional coaches, NCFC Youth’s recreation program relies on volunteers. “We work with our coaches to develop specialized practice plans to create the best environment for our players,” Gary says. “NCFC offers coaching courses with our professional staff, both online and in person, that cater specifically to their players’ age groups. We bring in professional educators and also send our coaches out to get state and national coaching licenses. We spend countless hours and money investing in our coaches.” To Gary, NCFC Youth’s commitment to coaches helps strengthen the entire community. “Soccer provides so many life lessons in terms of setting goals, working through adversity, learning how to be coachable and more,” he says. “We really focus on these players having more than just soccer skills; we’re teaching them how to be people who make a positive impact on society.” A COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY The Triangle Business Journal recently honored NCFC Youth with its Corporate Philanthropy award for the organization’s ongoing community support. In the 2017-2018 season alone, NCFC Youth distributed nearly $400,000 in financial aid to families who demonstrated a clear financial need. Additionally, NCFC Youth partnered with the Durham Police Athletic League as part of an outreach initiative to provide soccer opportunities to underserved populations in the local community. DPAL serves elementary-aged students in the Durham area using sports as a means to promote healthy relationships between children and their community. NCFC Youth provided jerseys, equipment and curriculum support to the Durham Police Department. Other popular community programs include an after-school program for kids at PAVE and Creech Elementary schools in southeast Raleigh—a historically underserved area of the county—along with TOPSoccer, which is designed to meet the needs of athletes up to age 18 who have physical, developmental or intellectual disabilities. TOPSoccer pairs athletes up with a “buddy” to ensure each athlete learns the game while having fun. Buddies are often NCFC Youth high school players. “It’s part of our mission to be a valuable community partner, and that is incredibly important to us,” Gary says. “We put our money where our mouth is. We’re truly committed to bringing the game of soccer to everyone who has a desire to play.”
