designer Nichole Blough. Every room in the home, conveniently located off Davis Drive, was designed to both wow and function for a family. Every room is bold and colorful individually, but there is continuity among the different spaces. “I knew I had to have a plan when approaching the design to ensure a cohesive flow throughout,” Nichole says. She started the design in the open living room since it is the center of the house. Nichole chose a color palette for the room then branched the design out to the rest of the home, which includes memorable features,

big and small, like a huge island in the kitchen and a built-in dog bed in the drop zone near the garage. Nichole has always been a designer at heart. Her creativity was noticeable from a very young age, she says, and by the age of 10, she was choosing colors and fabrics for her childhood room, then eventually for her entire childhood home. After becoming a mother, Nichole’s love for interiors became clear and her goal to become a working designer a priority. “When my son was born…it inspired me to finally go after my dream of being an interior designer,” Nichole says. Nichole says she loves working in Cary. It is where she grew up. And at the Willow Oak project, she found a canvas on which to flex her design muscle. A bold mix of art, color and fabric is the hallmark of Nichole’s work. “I think part of a good designer is knowing how to push the limits and still create a timeless design,” she says. Nichole likes to use local art with a story whenever possible, make surprising color and fabric choices, and use a mix of new and Photo by Katherine Johnson

vintage accessories and furnishings. Her biggest tip for mixing it up in home design is to harness the power of a great paint color. “Paint is an affordable yet impactful way to create a new feeling within a space,” Nichole says. She also recommends adding a great neutral rug, in an otherwise colorful room, to anchor the space. She says the right mix of color, furnishings and texture can create a sense of comfort within a space. “Fresh and tailored, yet comfortable,” is how Nichole describes the overall effect. When she’s not designing gorgeous spaces, Nichole enjoys dining at Cary hot spots like La Farm Bakery, Kale Me Crazy, Gonza Tacos y Tequila and Herons Restaurant, and traveling to new places to collect inspiration. When he was just 16, Lionel joined Les Compagnons du Devoir, the prestigious artisans’ guild in France. While at the centuries-old guild, he apprenticed with several European bakers and seven years later emerged as a master baker. He takes his craft and title seriously. “To share my bread baking experience is a lifetime commitment, quest and love,” Lionel says. This desire to share his passion for baking is apparent everywhere at La Farm, which has called Cary home since 1999. “We created an open space so that our customers could see our breads being crafted and pulled from our ovens and really be part of the process,” Lionel says of La Farm’s flagship Cary Parkway cafe. The bakery’s open, inclusive design isn’t the only place his community-driven philosophy can be seen at La Farm. “One hundred percent of our flours are milled in North Carolina,” Lionel says. Through La Farm, Lionel has put Cary, and North Carolina, on the culinary map when it comes to artisan baking. La Farm also carries specialty products like cheese from local cheesemakers. This local connection is a source of pride for Lionel. He describes La Farm as “connecting our farmers, millers and community through bread.” In addition to feeding the crowds that show up day after day at the bakery, La Farm donates to several local charities and organizations. “Bread has no borders, no politics, no religion,” Lionel says. “For centuries, bakers have been known for this, and it’s something we feel very deeply about.” Lionel’s book, A Passion for Bread: Lessons from a Master Baker, is a natural extension of his compulsion to share his craft. Lionel is especially interested in sharing his knowledge and experience with a new generation of bakers. “A book provided an ideal way to make [baking] accessible to all,” Lionel says. Lionel’s book is both personal and practical. In it he shares everything from the symbolism of how the bread was placed on his childhood table—in the very center, naturally, and directly on the table—and how it affected him, to how home cooks can adapt bread recipes—including water temperatures and the amount of yeast or starter needed—to the weather. The book includes recipes and old-world French baking techniques, along with beautiful photos and personal stories. Lionel also shares his love for baking by teaching classes at La Farm. Classes like “Death by Chocolate” and “Country French” regularly sell out quickly. La Farm, now in its 20th year of business, is where Lionel spreads his love for baking every day. “At La Farm, we aspire to make one great loaf of bread at a time and connect with one customer at a time,” he says.
