Dear Readers,
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Amy Adams … no, not the actress. I am the publication director for Carmel City Lifestyle, and I’m celebrating my sixth issue with the magazine.
This job is a dream come true!

As a journalism major at The University of Alabama, I chose to specialize in magazines. However, as the wife of a career officer in the U.S. Army, I moved 12 times in 20 years. I learned quickly that it was easier for me to freelance for various newspapers, magazines and book publishers than it was to change jobs each time we settled into a new town. So to be able to devote my time to one magazine, especially a magazine that highlights the area where we have chosen to retire from the military, is a real treat.
While I have design experience when it comes to publications, I have never considered myself an expert on “style.” Thankfully, in this issue, we have experts like Stylist Angie Scott with House of Colour to educate me on curating confidence and celebrating my individuality through the color palette of my wardrobe. I truly appreciate the advice of Steve Tillman, president and lead designer with Country Gardens Lawn & Landscaping, about ways my family can make the large backyard of our 125-year-old farmhouse more conducive to our relaxing and entertaining needs. John Leonard introduced me to the intricate design and engineering marvels of some of the vehicles that will be on display at Artomobilia this month, and I can’t wait to explore the event with my youngest son who is in high school and quite the car enthusiast. And, finally, I have to thank AH Collections, Carmel Tailoring and Silver in the City for contributing to our roundup of fashionable fall finds available right here in Carmel.
Thank you for welcoming me to Carmel City Lifestyle. I promise to always put in the effort to bring you the best of what Carmel has to offer.

In 2008, Artomobilia Event Director John Leonard coordinated an auto show in Carmel with around 40 cars.
“I started it because I love cars,” Leonard says, “but I continued it because the guys that are involved are great.”

Now the largest single-day event in Carmel, Artomobilia will host around 500 vehicles and an estimated 25,000 attendees when it returns to the Carmel Arts & Design District on September 7.
“Artomobilia definitely appeals to car enthusiasts who want to show their cars in a well-organized show,” Leonard says. “But you’re not just going to see any one type of person. Artomobilia brings out families and couples and teenagers who are interested in cars.”
Artomobilia doesn’t claim to be the “Cadillac of car shows,” like Pebble Beach or Amelia Island.
“We’re a little more pedestrian, but we will have multi-million-dollar cars,” Leonard says. “There’s something for everyone. It’s the most eclectic car event I’ve ever been to.”
That variety has contributed to the growth and popularity of the event as one of the largest and most popular car shows in the Midwest. Guests will see a wide range of vehicles, from Packards to Porsches, from 1965 Shelby Cobras to late model Ferrari SF90s.
“Everyone loves a beautiful car,” Leonard says, “but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so we want all the cars.”
Last year, Artomobilia showcased one of only four GM Futureliners from the 1950s, the only one that isn’t in a museum.
“Our focus has been on unique cars and unique owners,” Leonard says. “We have guys bringing out cars worth $28,000, and we also have guys that are bringing out cars worth $8 million.”
Leonard tells about a man in Hamilton County who owns a multi-million-dollar Ferrari.
“He will pull into the show and be ‘oohing’ and ‘ahhing’ over someone’s Chevrolet Corvair,” Leonard says.
Leonard chalks this up to two effects he sees play out at Artomobilia each year: One is aspiration, the other is nostalgia. Attendees see cars they aspire to own one day. At the same time, owners see automobiles that have a different kind of value because they are full of memories for them.
“Each group looks longingly at the other,” Leonard explains.
These car owners are not just local, though. They come from all over the U.S.

“I’m sure the guy that comes from Houston passes a few other car shows along the way,” Leonard laughs.
Artomobilia hosts large congregations of cars, like Porche-Palooza. In fact, the Mercedes Monumental Collector Car Show holds their event in Indiana so that they can participate in Artomobilia. Approximately 50 Mercedes come in from more than 20 states.
“A couple of guys drive from Maine and Denver,” Leonard says.
Each year, Artomobilia selects a vehicle to be its “Feature Marque.” This year, it’s the timeless sophistication of the Aston Martin.
“It’s an absolutely drop dead gorgeous car,” Leonard says. But Artomobilia isn’t about one car, or even one car show. Throughout the years, Artomobilia has hosted road rallies, like the Meatball 10,000, to raise money for various charities. Last year, they began a pre-party event called VELOCE. This year, in
addition to VELOCE happening on September 6, Artomobilia is adding a Ladies Luncheon on September 7 where speaker Stephanie Chen will be talking about ways to support the arts.
“We’ve always talked about cars as art,” Leonard says.
Once a year, Artomobilia becomes one more facet of art in the Carmel Arts & Design District, and Leonard endeavors to maintain the positive partnership between Artomobilia and the City of Carmel, pointing attendees to the shops and restaurants in the area.
“Since 2008, the Arts & Design District has gone from not much to something really special,” Leonard says. “The Monon Trail has gone from nothing much at all to something amazing.”
The same could be said for Artomobilia.
“It is literally a celebration of auto art and design,” Leonard says, “and there’s no better place than the Arts & Design District to do that.”

How the Right Palette Changes
Your Look All Year Long
Angie Scott’s first experience with House of Colour was having a color analysis done with a friend in March of 2022.
“It changed the way I felt while wearing a color that looks really good on me,” Scott says. “I started receiving compliments on random days when I hadn’t put much effort into getting ready.”
Scott studied fashion merchandising and marketing at Ball State University; however, she has leaned more heavily on her Master’s degree in business administration from Taylor University for most of her career. When the opportunity came along in January 2023 to train as a “Color and Image Stylist” with House of Colour and to hang out her shingle in Carmel, it just made sense.
Not long after that, Ali Dillingham, owner of A Yarn Market in the Village of WestClay, started having customers come in with color swatches looking for the perfect yarn to

Knowing that Dillingham has cool undertones narrows down the possible color palettes that will look best on her. House of Colour describes these four basic color palettes as Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, with Summer and Winter encompassing the cool-toned selections. Scott uses House of Colour’s proprietary color drapes to determine which of the color palettes gives Dillingham a natural glow. Once Scott determines that Dillingham is a Summer, she is able to further pinpoint specific colors from the Summer palette that best showcase her features. These are Dillingham’s WOW colors.
match their coloring. Dillingham’s questions quickly led to a blossoming relationship between the two small-business owners.
“I love that small, women-owned businesses can support each other,” Dillingham says.
Now, the two invite Carmel City Lifestyle into A Yarn Market for a behind-the-scenes look at Dillingham’s color analysis.
Each color analysis incorporates a process more than three decades in the marking. Scott begins by determining whether a client has warm or cool undertones. Dillingham has cool undertones, meaning that she has hints of pink or blue tones beneath her skin, as opposed to someone with warm undertones who would have hints of peach or green tones beneath their skin.
During each analysis, for those who wear makeup, Scott goes on to offer guidance on selecting from a range of products

specifically designed for each season in order to create a quick everyday look that will complement a client’s natural features. She helps Dillingham identify her signature blush and offers her lip colors to suit her Summer palette.
“The entire experience was helpful, from a personal and professional perspective,” Dillingham says. “The actual color analysis was fun and educational, and Angie took time to explain each step and application of my colors.”
Scott says that the first thing she encourages all her clients to do after color analysis is to wear their colors.
“This is how to best become acclimated with the process and where clients start hearing the ‘Wow, you look amazing' comments,” Scott says. “The best part is hearing from them after their color analysis when they receive the first compliment while wearing their seasonal color palette or makeup.”
However, Scott’s services don’t end with color analysis. A true stylist, she works with repeat clients for personal shopping, selecting outfits and applying makeup for special occasions, choosing hair color, picking out eyewear and more.
“It depends on the person and what his or her needs are,” Scott says. “It’s really a bespoke service.”
Scott helps guide clients in cleaning out their closets and understanding what pieces they may want to replace in the future.
“Shopping is fun, but it's also hard for some people,” Scott says. “Educating men and women during color and style analysis empowers them to make confident choices about clothing and makeup.”
The next step is to build a sustainable wardrobe that caters to practical needs but also embodies a person’s individual style and personal flair despite changing fashion trends. Scott offers style appointments where she looks at body architecture and helps equip the client with the ability to select clothing that flatters his or her unique shape and proportions.
“Think of it this way,” she says, “you wouldn’t want to put a round tablecloth on a rectangular table.”
Scott also considers personality and lifestyle to determine what garments suit each individual not only in fit but also style.
“It all works together to create a wardrobe that works for each client in color, style and fit,” she says. “It’s the whole package. And when they love the experience and result so much that they bring friends and family members, I know I've made an impact.”
As for Dillingham, she says she is looking forward to continuing her color journey.

Having begun more than 25 years ago as a lawn maintenance company, Country Gardens Lawn & Landscaping has evolved into a premier landscape design-and-build firm.
While Country Gardens no longer provides lawn maintenance, that previous experience lays the groundwork for the company's complete services from initial ideas to final installation.
President and Lead Designer Steve Tillman calls on his background studying horticulture at both Florida Atlantic and Purdue universities as well as his design experience to lend elevated style to outdoor expanses. Country Gardens specializes in patios, pools, fire features, pergolas and pavilions, retaining walls, outdoor lighting, landscaping and more.
“Our clients are hiring us to create that complete look,” Tillman says. "It could be a modern space or traditional space that gives the customer a unique look and stamp on their own outdoor living space."
Photos: Country Gardens designed a gated outdoor area at a lake house in Monticello. Pavers bordered by grass create a large patio with a fire feature in the center and an outdoor kitchen to the side. A gas fire pit, a wooden play structure and landscaping extend beyond the patio. Exterior lighting, including string lights, assures that gatherings don't have to end at sunset. The setting is perfect to turn an ordinary evening into something magical.
"Consumers really know what they want," Tillman says. "The chef in the family may want to bring their cooking skills to the outdoor space."
Outdoor kitchens are more popular than ever, according to Tillman, especially incorporated into a covered pavilion-type area with a bar and fireplace that provides for all-weather entertainment. Pizza ovens and all-in-one grills with smokers and griddles are gaining in popularity as they allow people to cook just about anything. Minifridges keep cold drinks on hand.
“The decorator of the family may chime in on a certain look they are going for," Tillman continues.
Country Gardens employs only the best tools and materials to ensure installations are functional as well as aesthetically pleasing, such as using concrete, brick or flagstone pavers to create beautiful patios. The company also utilizes ecological plant management in landscaping. The latest technology provides clients with visuals of what their outdoor projects will look like upon completion.
“Everyone wants to have that outdoor hang-out space,” Tillman says, "but every space is unique, and every family uses the spaces in different ways. Some families enjoy more of a weekend entertainment area. Some families are smaller or they are empty nesters who want a secluded weekend and weekday getaway. Our job is to listen to people and to be able to implement what they want into our designs."
Photos: A local homeowner wanted an update to the rather plain concrete patio surrounding the pool in his backyard. Country Gardens built a covered outdoor kitchen with gorgeous carved wood accents to match an existing structure. Plans utilize landscaping to delineate areas as well as to provide privacy. Separate seating invites guests to make themselves comfortable, and the matching fire features ensure that cooler temperatures won't put a damper on entertaining this fall.

LOOK LOCAL FOR THE STYLES AND COLORS OF THE SEASON
As the temperatures begin to cool off, fashion is heating up with molten metallics and corresponding warm earth tones of umbers and ochres. Belts are the accessory of the year for women, and ties for men are taking on bold diagonal stripes and geometric shapes as well as tribal and animal prints. Chandelier earrings are back, as are chunky metal earrings. Finally, pairing gold with blue is not only on trend, but it can be a way to show support for our favorite local teams.
