When Women Gather
There’s something powerful that happens when women gather.
It goes beyond a simple meet-up. It’s about the magic that happens when stories are shared and big dreams are voiced out loud. It’s an energy that empowers us while keeping us rooted, and this month, we are leaning into that strength.
This edition is a celebration of that energy.
As a woman-owned business, I witness this synergy firsthand whenever I connect with fellow female entrepreneurs. We don’t just network; we build bridges. We brainstorm solutions, open doors and find a unique brand of comfort in our shared hustle.
The women featured in these pages are builders, creators, leaders and visionaries. Some are leading businesses. Some are leading families. Many are doing both—often simultaneously, and often without recognition for the complexity that requires. What they all share is a willingness to step forward, to take risks and to shape their lives with intention.
My hope for this magazine is that as you read these stories, you don’t just admire these women, but you see yourself in them. In their ambition. In their uncertainty. In their growth. And perhaps, in their willingness to take the next step, even when the path isn’t fully clear.
Enjoy this edition, and don’t forget to tell the women in your life how much you appreciate them!
Happy May!

Of Breast Health Awareness And Prevention A New Era
Ascension's Christina Kim, MD, Applies Proactive Prevention, Advanced Imaging, Tailored Therapies And Innovative Minimally Invasive Surgeries To Help Women
With May being National Women’s Health Month, it's an ideal time to focus on how women can lower their breast cancer risks and stay informed about advances in breast health.
One local medical professional expertly executes a multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer care and all breast diseases. Christina Kim, MD, is board-certified in general surgery and fellowship-trained in surgical oncology, and is an experienced breast surgical oncologist at Ascension St. Vincent Carmel and Ascension St. Vincent in Fishers and Kokomo. Dr. Kim diagnoses and treats women and men with all breast-related diseases, including benign problems to highrisk prevention of breast cancers, lymph node tumors and other breast issues.
"Every appointment with me starts with a conversation to get to know the patient," she says.
Prevention is key to breast health. Building on the importance of early awareness, Dr. Kim encourages her patients to look for signs and symptoms of breast cancer, such as a new lump, or changes in skin. "It's important to talk to your doctor as soon as possible after noticing any differences. Your health care provider can discuss any risks or concerns and take the appropriate next step," explains Dr. Kim.
"We now have more systematic ways to assess patients’ lifetime risk of breast cancer, and it's important to consider family history on both the maternal and paternal sides, since hereditary cancer genes can be passed down from either parent."
For women with a family history, a risk assessment based on family history, hormonal history, breast density, prior biopsies and chest radiation exposure is all taken into account. The field of cancer genetic counseling and testing has made significant strides over the past decade. Plus, Dr. Kim says the number of breast cancer gene panels has expanded. Genetic testing is more widely available with increased insurance coverage, and women at higher risk can undergo more intensive screening.
Everyone can make minor adjustments to their daily routines and lifestyles to help protect against cancer, asserts Dr. Kim. A healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, is important for maintaining a normal BMI. Avoiding smoking, excessive alcohol intake, over-processed foods and high-fat diets can decrease risk, too.
“Today, women can work alongside their doctor to take preventative medications and surgeries to prevent breast cancer: prophylactic mastectomies with the option of simultaneous breast reconstruction,” says Dr. Kim.
In addition to lifestyle adjustments, establishing a screening routine is an important preventive measure.
Dr. Kim explains that the benefits of early detection outweigh the risks of radiation exposure. National guidelines support that women begin annual screening mammograms at age 40 for average-risk women. “We're starting to see trends that women are younger at the diagnosis of breast cancer. So for high-risk women, I recommend starting mammograms earlier when family history or an individualized risk assessment indicates."
Newer technology, including breast MRIs, whole breast ultrasounds and contrast-based mammography, improves the visualization of cancers.
In addition to more screening, advancements in breast cancer care include more individualized therapies, novel targeted therapies and improved long-term side effects of treatment. New therapeutics, such as immunotherapies, have improved longterm survival rates. “We now have the ability to be more selective in the therapies we deliver, which helps to de-escalate treatments to improve patients' overall quality of life and decrease potential side effects. This is true for surgical approaches, radiation and chemotherapies,” adds Dr. Kim.
Surgical advancements also are leading the way. “As a breast surgical oncologist, I'm most excited about the newest technological advancement in breast cancer surgery using minimally invasive techniques. Robotic mastectomies can be performed with smaller, hidden scars, achieving greater precision and accuracy. There's less tissue trauma and greater potential for faster recovery, improved sensation, cosmesis and quality of life,” Dr. Kim proclaims.
With improved technology, lifestyle changes and comprehensive risk assessments, patients' outlook for breast cancer is improving. Through Dr. Kim's multispecialty approach, she works with a team of specialists to deliver comprehensive, compassionate care. She says she has a special interest in minimally invasive surgical approaches to breast cancer surgery, oncoplastic breast conserving surgery, mastectomies, flat aesthetic closures and advanced lymphatic surgery. She's also certified in breast ultrasound.
Dr. Kim is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons and the Society of Surgical Oncology. She's been named to Top Docs for more than 10 years consecutively, which is a prestigious, peer-nominated list of top-rated health care providers, most notably produced by research firm Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., recognizing the top 7% of US physicians.

INDIANA BALLET CONSERVATORY CELEBRATES 15 YEARS OF STORYTELLING, ARTISTIC PERFORMANCES
Built upon a 300-year foundation of excellence via the Vaganova total-body ballet training method, the mission of Indiana Ballet Conservatory in Carmel is to fuse the finest, classical ballet instruction with the best of contemporary techniques.
Alyona Yakovleva, IBC founder, artistic director, master teacher, coach and choreographer says IBC's faculty strives to provide their students with opportunities to thrive and achieve their goals, all within a professional and nurturing environment.

She says the Vaganova curriculum employed by IBC provides ballet students with a structured, scientific dance methodology and encompasses a holistic, pedagogical approach. This training was created by Agrippina Vaganova in the 1920s, and it combines French technique, Italian virtuosity and Russian romanticism. "It takes the human anatomy into consideration and emphasizes technical prowess, strength, precision, artistic creativity and épaulement (shoulder/head movement) to develop powerful, fluid and artistic dancers," she adds.
IBC strives to share the art of dance through performances as well as outreach programs for the underserved, and to instill in its students the desire to give back in a way that will change lives and connect a community.
Catch the group's youngest dancers as they perform onstage for their first time at 7 p.m. on May 16 at The Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. The enchanting event, titled Ballet Fairy Tales, is offered through a $25 general admission.
A second set of performances is slated for May 22 (7 p.m.) and 23 (4 p.m. and 7 p.m.) at The Tarkington in Carmel as IBC dancers present a unique interpretation of the timeless tale, Romeo & Juliet, reimagined by Alyona. She says this show isn't just a performance; it's a family tradition that celebrates dedication to the artistry of ballet.
Additionally, IBC will host a 15th anniversary gala in Carmel on July 23 at Hotel Carmichael, complete with an extraordinary alumni performance, followed on Sept. 18 by a 15th anniversary Hickory Hall Polo Club special event.

As part of the Indy Eleven club, the women's team joined the newly formed USL W League during 2022. The team was the 17th team to be announced for the amateur women's league. The inaugural roster consisted of 25 women, including 11 players with Indiana ties, four international players and seven collegiate players.
The USL W league was originally announced in 2021 by the United Soccer League with eight clubs, six of which would be women's sides for existing men's USL teams, and two of which would be entirely new franchises. At launch, USL representatives stated the

inaugural season would include at least 30 teams. The inaugural season began on May 6, 2022, with 44 teams across 20 states. By the 2023 season the league grew to 65 teams, and in 2026 it has 96 teams. The growth of the league resulted in the development of a four-conference system, which is divided into 16 divisions.
The name "Eleven" doesn't reference the 11 players who take to the field representing the club, rather it pays homage to Indiana's 11th Regiment Indiana Infantry in the American Civil War, while the navy colored checkered background is a nod to both Indianapolis' auto-racing culture and the Brickyard Battalion supporters group. Lady Victory from the Soldiers' and Sailors' monument is the focal point of the crest. The color scheme is the same as that of the civic flag of Indianapolis.
INDY ELEVEN W LEAGUE HEAD COACHES
As former assistant coach for this team, Brandon Kim was promoted to head coach on Jan. 14, 2025. The Carmel native had been an assistant coach for the Girls in Blue since the team began in 2022, serving as acting head coach for much of the 2024 season. He now resides in Whitestown.
Prior to the Girls in Blue, Brandon was an assistant coach at Lady Victory FC in the WPSL and a men’s assistant at Marian University for three years. He began his coaching career at Carmel United and Park Tudor.
“To be head coach is an incredible honor,” Brandon says. “The Indy soccer community and the Eleven fan base are second to none. To say that I'm beyond grateful and excited to be back out on the field with them again in 2026 is an understatement."
Kelly Freeland is the goalkeeper coach. Sierra Garber enters her fifth season as head athletic trainer for the club’s USL W League squad. Emily Sochacki is the manager of team operations for the Girls in Blue. The women's team official presenting sponsor for the 2026 season is Renaissance Indianapolis North Hotel.

May Is Osteoporosis Awareness Month
OsteoStrong Indy Westfield Owners Help Decrease Body Pain, Build Stronger Bones
Many people aren't aware that osteoporosis is a "silent" bone disease that increases fragility, often causing no symptoms until a fracture occurs, typically in the hip, spine or wrist. To ward off such damage, co-owners of OsteoStrong Indy Westfield and married duo Kelly and Jesse Riley provide innovative solutions for bone health through personalized guidance.
"Most people don’t realize their bones are weakening until they experience a fracture, which is why early screening and prevention are so important," Kelly explains. "But bone density is only part of the story."
At OsteoStrong, Jesse says they focus on improving bone strength and bone quality, not just bone density, through a combination of targeted osteogenic loading and advanced screening technology.
Kelly encourages: "It’s never too early, or too late, to support bone health. With the right stimulus, nutrition and lifestyle strategies, people can take meaningful steps to strengthen their bones and reduce fracture risk at any age."
American Medical Association statistics estimate 54 million Americans are affected by either osteoporosis or low bone mass, with 80% of those suffering from the disease being women.
As a certified nutritional therapy practitioner with advanced training in functional labs, Kelly says she helps women understand and address root causes of bone loss by

supporting hormones, metabolism, nutrition and lifestyle factors that influence long-term skeletal health. "My work is driven by my passion for understanding how diet and nutrition impact overall health. I enjoy assisting individuals with achieving optimal wellness," she explains.
With 20-plus years of experience in the medical device industry, most of Jesse's professional career has focused on cardiac risks and heart health, where he has witnessed the profound impact that medical advancements can have on longevity and quality of life. Jesse says he appreciates that unlike many traditional treatments, OsteoStrong doesn’t require major surgery, expensive devices or pharmaceuticals. "It empowers individuals to take their health into their own hands."

BECKY HILLYARD
From Side Hustle to Style Empire
The power of taste, trust, and the courage to “just start.”
She didn’t have a business plan, a media budget, or even a name anyone could pronounce. What Becky Hillyard had was taste, a young family, and the instinct to just start. Today, her lifestyle brand Cella Jane commands an audience the size of Vogue’s , she’s nine collections strong with Splendid, and she’s built it all while raising three kids — refusing to sacrifice one for the other. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Becky shares what it really takes to build a brand, a career, and a life you love. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full conversation.
Q: WHEN DID YOU KNOW CELLA JANE WAS MORE THAN A HOBBY?
A: Two moments. Women started emailing me saying they bought something I recommended and felt amazing — asking me to help them find a dress for a wedding. That felt incredible. Then I looked at my affiliate numbers for one month and realized I could cover our mortgage. I thought, I can actually do this. I never set out to build a business. I started it because I genuinely loved it.
Becky in Splendid x @CellaJaneBlog Spring 2026 Collection
Q: WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST RISK YOU EVER TOOK WITH THE BRAND?
A: Designing my own collection. It’s easy to point at items on a website and say I love these. But to create something from scratch, put your name on it, and wait to see if people connect with it — that’s terrifying. I had an incredible partner in Splendid, and women loved the pieces. It was the biggest risk and the biggest accomplishment.
Q: HOW HAS INFLUENCER MARKETING CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED?
A: When I started, brands didn’t know whether to take it seriously. Now it’s a legitimate line item in their marketing budgets — sometimes bigger than TV. Because what we’ve built is trust. People trust a real recommendation from someone they follow far more than a commercial. There’s no question about it now.
Q: YOU’RE A MOM OF THREE RUNNING A FULL BRAND. WHAT DOES YOUR DAY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?
A: I try to get up at five and not hit snooze — that first hour before the house wakes up is the most productive, most peaceful hour of my day. Then it’s all hands on deck with the kids and school drop-off. After that I work — planning content, connecting with my team, editing. After pickup, the day shifts completely and it’s all about them. I’ve learned to protect both halves fiercely, because both matter.
Q: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BUILD SOMETHING OF THEIR OWN BUT KEEPS WAITING?
A: Don’t wait. Don’t wait for the perfect camera, the right strategy, or enough followers. We find every excuse to stay comfortable. Just start, be consistent, and be authentically yourself. The right people will find you — and they’ll stay.
This conversation is just the beginning. Becky goes deeper on the risks that almost stopped her, the design process behind her latest Splendid collection, and what she’d tell her 2012 self today. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle podcast.
“Trust is the only metric that actually compounds.”
