Home Is Where The Heart Is

It's time for our Home edition as a celebration of all things 'homey.'

As I reflected on this theme, I was reminded of a story from one of my favorite books,  The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. If you haven’t read it yet, consider this your sign to pick up a copy from the library. For those who have, you’ll remember it as the story of a young protagonist who sets out on a great adventure in search of treasure, only to dis cover in the end that the treasure had been waiting for him at home all along. The first time I read it, I wept at the ending. Haven’t we all, in our own way, embarked on a hero’s journey — only to realize the very thing we were searching for was within us, or right where we began, all along?

That is the power in the concept of home.

In this month's magazine, we outline the value of transforming spaces with refined and elegant custom glass solutions; tips for weaving this year's top accent colors into your home; how to decorate to give homes soulful looks; and where to donate those useful household items as we all declutter for spring. Do you have a long fix-it list or home improvement projects? We interviewed the owner of a handyman service business who stands ready to prioritize and take care of those items. We also spoke to the nonprofit team whose volunteers deliver meals to those who can't leave their homes or prepare meals themselves due to health, age or injury recovery reasons. We salute all these local volunteers who assist others facing food insecurity.

As you turn these pages, I hope you take a moment to reflect on what home means to you, whether it’s the physical place that keeps you safe and warm, or the place where your heart feels most at ease. Pause, and feel gratitude for the simple, beautiful feeling of being home.

Cheers,

March 2026

U.S. News representatives placed Carmel as second in their 2025-2026 Best Places to Live rankings among 250 major cities analyzed. To make the top of the list, a place had to have good value compared to similarly sized cities, be a desirable place to live, have a strong job market and high quality of life. Spaces Deserve Luxury Glass Creations

ELEVATE HOME SOPHISTICATION WITH GATSBY GLASS OF NORTHWEST INDIANAPOLIS ASSISTANCE

Elegance meets innovation during projects handled by the Gatsby Glass of Northwest Indianapolis team. "Our expertise in designing and installing various premium glass products aims to recast the look and functionality of our clients' spaces into welcoming retreats," says Steve McKinley, franchise owner. "We help transform properties with refined and elegant custom glass solutions."

McKinley says replacing shower doors and shower remodeling is a large base of their business. For homeowners, they also are creating privacy for home offices through glass applications. His team also works with custom homebuilders to place special touches within new houses.

In fact, McKinley says they specialize in providing frameless, walk-in shower doors and dual-sliding or pivoting doors for offices to partition spaces without sacrificing natural light or interior aesthetics.

He says he's often asked about the decision points between framed and frameless doors.

Frameless shower doors offer a clear view into showers, showcasing stunning tiles or brickwork, rain shower heads and other high-end fixtures. They're made of strong glass panes that don't need metal frame support. The absence of a visible frame creates a clean, modern appearance. Some advantages of frameless shower doors are the range of customizable designs, a sense of airiness in bathrooms, even in small ones, and easy maintenance related to cleaning because the lack of a frame reduces corrosion and the accumulation of soap scum in the crevices, which also collect mineral deposits. Chic, frameless designs use airtight and watertight seals to prevent leakage.

McKinley says some homeowners still prefer the framed shower door type due to its timeless charm, versatility and compatibility with most home or office designs. However, he adds that both shower door options are safe and stylish.

"Whether accentuating a residential area or revamping a commercial setting, we're dedicated to creating unique and striking environments using the finest glass products," he says.

McKinley relishes applying the pioneering aspects of using Gatsby's advanced glass technology. "Our team leverages cutting-edge technology to realize clients' visions with unmatched clarity. Our 3D digital renderings allow them to preview projects before installations, guaranteeing everyone's satisfaction," he assures.

Gatsby's virtual showroom uncovers endless possibilities and inspiration. The online visualizer can be located at GatsbyGlass.com/Visualizer

In the commercial area, this Gatsby Glass team works with retailers to create or repair spaces. "Two of my favorite recent projects were helping a veterinary clinic inside a shopping mall to add glass doors that pivot, and placing a see-through training room for a hair salon to separate it for noise control," McKinley states.

For safety reasons, McKinley says they apply tempered glass at certain thicknesses: 1/4-, 3/8- or 1/2 inch for glass at certain heights. Tempered glass works by creating internal stress, locking the outer surfaces in compression and the core in tension, making it four to five times stronger than regular glass, according to industry sources. This treatment is achieved by heating glass and then rapidly cooling it (quenching) with air jets, which causes the outside to harden faster than the inside. If it breaks, the tension releases, causing it to shatter into small, blunt, pebble-like pieces instead of large, sharp shards, making it a safer material for windows, shower doors and car windows.

For mirrors, McKinley says they apply a safety backing.

"Glass custom projects are not the easiest. We have to be careful to properly design and precisely measure.

“Our home or office glass services include shower and bathroom enclosures, railings, room enclosures, countertops, custom mirrors, glass partitions, walls and stair rails. Check out our visualizer tool to start.”

We work seamlessly with remodelers and have good relationships with other home design consultants, such as tile installers," McKinley says.

For tile-driven projects, he explains that they may start with hardware options and considerations, such as selecting specific handles. Then hardware colors are typically finalized, followed by face-to-face discussions.

Regarding current trends, McKinley says clients recently are switching to polished nickel products. He adds that matte black is returning as a favorite choice, along with aureate tones. "Gold colors are coming back, often with brushed satin finishes."

Gatsby Glass also offers Ultra Ice Pro, a glass and shower door cleaner, through an exclusive, four-step application, backed by a limited lifetime warranty. The process first removes surface contaminants before applying a twostep sealant. The last step cleans the surface with an eco-friendly, water-based Ultra Gentle Wash cleanser to protect it from damaging contaminants.

"We're happy to provide complimentary consultations. Simple changes can have remarkable impact, often described as clean, polished and refined," he says.

After launching this business during August 2024, McKinley says one of their new goals is to support more Habitat for Humanity projects. Gatsby Glass is part of the Howie Family of brands, which collaborates with Habitat for Humanity by donating significant funds and supporting affordable housing efforts.

Gatsby hours of operation are Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This team covers projects in Carmel, Lebanon, Noblesville, Sheridan, Whitestown and Westfield.

Precision is paramount to Steve McKinley, franchise owner of Gatsby Glass NW Indianapolis, previously an auto/aerospace engineer for 30 years. As a Westfield resident, he appreciates having five grandchildren within 3-hours driving distance. He also enjoys delivering custom glass solutions!

SEC URE FAST, PRIORITY HOME MAINTENANCE, "DONE RIGHT"

ACCOUNTABLE

HANDYMAN SERVICE

“My home is the last place that the fix-it list gets done because I focus on our customers,” says Chris Bennett, owner of Carmel-based Handyman Now.  It’s this commitment to customer service that sets Handyman Now apart from other home-service companies and creates returning customers.

Chris Bennett, owner, Handyman Now

Learning from his father, a contractor for 40 years, and from his software development and sales background, Bennett says he knew he could combine his knowledge and skills to create a company that met homeowners' needs.

At first, partnerships with realtors led to repeat customers among homeowners. “Once we fixed the items in the inspection report, homeowners started trusting us with repeat jobs. Customers would even hire us when they moved into new homes. Initially, our jobs were smaller and more immediate; now they're larger, more complex projects," he shares.

His business then grew through word-ofmouth, business from existing customers, strong 5-star Google reviews and a reputable network of realtors.

Bennett is committed to completing home repairs himself to ensure work is done as quickly as possible. “We show up for estimates, provide estimates and then are prompt for service appointments,” he explains. “Customers' time is valuable, and they want to work with a company that does what it says it will in a timely manner.”

After services are complete, it’s not uncommon for customers to receive a visit from Bennett to ensure the work was done on time and accurately. “For me, success means happy customers who trust our work and know they can call us again. We focus on quality, positive experiences and giving homeowners their time back to enjoy life with family and friends, not fixing things,” he says.

One of his biggest pieces of advice to homeowners is to not ignore small maintenance needs in homes, such as caulking showers, ensuring proper water drainage, faucet flow and repairing wood. “That smaller repair that costs $100 to $200 could be hiding a larger problem that could cost thousands if not addressed," he explains.

Routine maintenance services offered by Handyman Now include plumbing, painting, electrical, carpentry, caulking, furniture assembly, drywall work, lighting and custom built-ins.

CONTINUED >

Bennett introduced subscription plans after speaking with his customers to understand their needs from a home-service provider. A subscription plan lets customers prioritize home maintenance and handle bigger issues.

“There’s always another project waiting at home. Our subscription plans give customers predictable costs and priority service, so their to-do lists actually gets done,” says Bennett.

Handyman Now offers two monthly subscription plans: $250 for 2 hours of service, and $400 for 4 hours. While Bennett says most customers choose the 4-hour plan each month, there's also an annual option that provides 24 hours per year for $2,500. “Customers love how easy it is to manage the subscription. I designed an online portal that allows them to enter the job they need done, and when it's completed, they can see the remaining hours for the month,” he explains.

Additionally, he says subscription plan hours roll over to the next month. "So if someone is traveling, wintering or doesn't have an immediate project, they don't lose the hours."

As homeowners stay in their current homes longer due to market conditions, the Handyman Now team has expanded services to better meet their needs. They now offer more than just immediate repairs, including half-bath remodels, light fixture upgrades, custom-built solutions and cabinetry upgrades. Bennett says, “I advise clients to update their homes with flexibility. They don’t need to spend more than they have to keep their home feeling refreshed. Light fixture styles, cabinet hardware and paint styles change quickly, so choose what works for you now and consider updates as trends evolve. These types of improvements make a difference to the overall look, feel and functionality of a home.”

As the business has grown, the importance of hiring the right team has increased. “I'm always hiring,” explains Bennett. “I look for good people who are experts in their field.”

He's hired team members based on referrals and family relationships within the staff. "With 20 people working at Handyman Now, we emphasize selecting a team of trade professionals in their craft. Customers can rest assured that the person working in their home is an expert,” he assures.

How To Apply 2026 Color Of The Year To Express Luxury Within Homes

2026's Color of the Year, according to WGSN representatives as the world’s leading consumer trend forecasters, is transformative teal. This hue embodies renewal, depth and modern elegance, a rich blend of blue and green that symbolizes balance, emotional clarity and fresh starts. Its versatility allows it to feel grounding or energizing.

In homes, transformative teal shines on accent walls, cabinetry and textiles such as draperies, bedding and throw pillows. It pairs beautifully with warm neutrals, brushed brass, soft woods and creamy tones, creating serene yet upscale living rooms, bedrooms and entryways. Kitchens, bathrooms and bars benefit from its jewel-like quality when combined with clean white tile or stone, such as marble or quartzite.

This shade's also striking in handbags, coats, journals and phone cases, adding quiet luxury to everyday style.

Note that Pantone's chosen color of the year is cloud dancer, a lofty, calming white.

MEALS ON WHEELS OF HAMILTON COUNTY: 50 YEARS STRONG

BY

PATTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY COURTESY PHOTOS/ PICKETT & ASSOCIATES

Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County, Inc. delivered its first meal during 1975 from the kitchen of Riverview Hospital to a small number of homebound individuals in Carmel, Noblesville and Fishers. Today, more than 450 volunteers deliver nearly 200 meals daily. Based on this nonprofit's statistics, approximately 21,000 residents in Hamilton County face food insecurity, and many more face barriers accessing consistent, nutritious meals.

The Meals on Wheels home food delivery service is available to anyone who is physically or mentally unable to prepare meals for themselves

regardless of age or income. Recipients may request assistance themselves or be referred by their physician, a family member, church pastor or hospital discharge personnel.

Beth Gehlhausen, executive director for this local Meals On Wheels organization, says the staff contacts a recipient’s primary physician to obtain a dietary prescription. A dietary prescription is required for each recipient receiving meals to ensure that dietary restrictions are honored, and dietary requirements are met.

Gehlhausen assures that meals are prepared in state-approved health care facilities under the direct supervision of registered dietitians. She says special dietary requirements for individuals can be accommodated, such as a diabetic, heart healthy, low-fat/low-cholesterol or renal diets for dialysis patients.

Menus are designed by the nutrition services staff at state-approved health care facilities and may rotate on a weekly or monthly basis. Accommodations for dietary restrictions are made during meal preparation. However, due to the volume of meals prepared at the facilities, Gehlhausen says they aren't able to personalize a recipient's meals based purely on likes and dislikes.

Meal delivery schedules can be customized to meet the needs of recipients with a maximum of five days and a minimum of two days per week. Recipients may select the days.

When starting meal service, Gehlhausen says they require a two-week minimum and a two-week advance payment (non-refundable). "We don’t feel anyone can make an informed judgment about the program after only receiving a couple of meals."

This group receives and appreciates communitywide support, especially given that it's not a government-funded program. In fact, the second annual Al

Haimbach Memorial Golf Classic special event held June 9, 2025, at the Chatham Hills Country Club in Westfield raised $83,000. The funds supported the organization’s mission of delivering medically tailored meals to the elderly or those with disabilities, facing food insecurities or unable to prepare food for themselves, for both short- and long-term needs in Hamilton County.

The Meals on Wheels team reminds that food insecurity doesn’t always look like empty cupboards; it often shows up as skipped meals, limited nutrition or tough choices between groceries, rent and medication.

Additionally, the group's signature fundraiser, Dancing with Our Stars, raised more than $166,000 in 2025. Their 12th annual Dancing with Our Stars event is slated for Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026.

However, Gehlhausen states the day-to-day success of Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County depends on the compassionate hearts of volunteers and the willingness to share time and resources from community-service-minded individuals.

Applications for this group's services can be completed online at MealsOnWheelshc.org.

MID-CENTURY WARMTH, REIMAGINED

There’s a certain moment when a house stops feeling new and starts feeling like home. It isn’t marked by square footage or finishes alone. It is something quieter, more emotional. In this home, designer Kate Manz set out to do exactly that: give a newly built home a heartbeat and a soul.

Rather than treating the house as one sweeping statement, she approached each room as its own story, layered with meaning, memory, and texture. The result is a home that feels collected, personal, and deeply lived-in.

“Tackling each space and room as its own story and concept is how to make a new space feel personal,” Manz explains. “But bringing it all together cohesively is always the challenge.”

Her solution? Warmth, intention, and a strong belief in the power of people. In new builds it can take years for a home to shed its newness. For this project, the goal was to fast-track that sense of belonging by layering in pieces with history and heart. Vintage market finds, local artists, and meaningful objects play a starring role throughout the home.

“My love for design goes hand in hand with the people and stories that bring it to life,” she says. “I absolutely love seeing the evolution from concept to completion and all the elements and people that help bring those ideas to reality.”

That philosophy becomes especially important in the home’s expansive open-concept living area, where scale could easily overpower intimacy.

THE OPEN CONCEPT, REIMAGINED

The main living space is defined by bringing the outside in with sweeping outdoor views and generous proportions. Rather than fighting that openness, embrace it.

“The big open concept room really highlights the expansive outdoor views,” she says, “but making intimate spaces within that open room was really important.”

A layered niche wall, created in collaboration with the interior architect Nick Flower, brings both structure and softness to the room. It introduces texture, depth, and a place for unique objects and family heirlooms to live, turning negative space into a personal gallery.

ENTRYWAY: A WARM WELCOME

The entryway sets the tone with a simple but powerful goal: Welcome to my home.

Natural stone underfoot grounds the space, while a soft vintage rug and living greenery immediately soften the experience. Art with personal meaning invites guests to linger rather than rush through.

POWDER BATH: SMALL ROOM, BOLD SPIRIT

If there’s one place Manz encourages clients to take risks, it’s the powder room. Here, she leaned into terracotta earth tones, layering textures and tile sizes for visual interest and warmth. Patterned and solid tiles work together, while textured wall coverings and a sculptural stone sink elevate the space from functional to delightful.

LOUNGE: A STUDY IN CALM AND DEPTH

Designed as a counterpoint to the openness of the main living area, the lounge is a cocoon, both peaceful, layered, and deeply versatile. It’s a place for reading, movie nights and slow mornings.

Rich tones and varied textures do the heavy lifting here, creating depth without heaviness. Soft lighting and custom upholstery make the room feel both intentional and effortless.

At its core, this home is a reminder that design isn’t about perfection, but rather it’s about feeling. By treating each room as its own narrative while weaving in warmth, history, and human connection, a space was created that already feels loved.
