Unleash Joy
Dear Reader,
This issue is always one of my favorites because it celebrates two sources of endless love in my life: kids and pets.
Children bring a curiosity and wonder to life that lights up the world around them. They move us to rediscover our own creativity and to look for the magic in everyday moments. I have experienced this firsthand with my own two. Their laughter and hugs are the bright spots in my day, instilling hope for the future no matter what is going on in the world.
And I can’t write about my pets without crying. The hardest part about bringing animals into our homes is that they don’t live as long as most of our human family members. I’ve had my share of cuddles and kisses over the years, and I’ve had my share of goodbyes.
In this issue, we feature a Golden Retriever who has not only brought joy to his own mom, dad and baby brother but to those across social media, as well. Garth shares with us his journey from family pet to furry influencer.
We bring you back-to-school styles from Lunch Money Boutique as well as advice for a chaos-free character party from Once Upon a Princess. Most importantly, we highlight four local nonprofits that welcome your support as they strive to offer safe spaces for the most vulnerable children and pets in our community.
This month we are also holding a Good Dog Giveaway. One winner will be selected at random for free services from Scenthound Carmel and Camp Bow Wow Carmel. Follow Carmel City Lifestyle, Garth the Golden, Scenthound Carmel and Camp Bow Wow Carmel on Instagram for details on how to enter.
We hope that this issue helps you take a moment to view the world through the loving eyes of our children and pets and inspires you to take a step to make the world a better place for them. ANDREA

FROM PUP NEXT DOOR TO RUNNING WITH THE BIG DOGS
If you’ve followed my social media since the beginning, you’ve followed me since … well, before I was born in Frankton, Ind. See, I’m just a small town Hoosier boy. Even if I did live with my human mommy Abby, in the big city of Chicago for a while, I’ve spent most of my seven years right here in Indiana.
My mom is a senior account executive with Salesforce, and my dad, Jeremy, is a financial advisor with Edward Jones; but I pull my own weight around our home when it comes to bringing in the bacon.
Mom grew up loving two things: Golden Retrievers and Garth Brooks. So, it was her dream to adopt a Golden Retriever and name him Garth. That’s me! I’m literally a dream come true!
Mom says that when I was born, “stories” didn’t exist on Instagram. She didn’t want her personal page to be full of puppy pictures (I can’t understand why), so she created a separate account for friends and family to follow me.
“It was never my intention to make Garth famous,” Mom says. “It really happened organically. Garth’s very quirky and funny, and I just started capturing his antics.”
Have you seen the video of me freaking out when Mom painted her nails? Or the one with the baby carrot?
“One thousand followers grew to 5,000 and then to 10,000,” Mom says.
Basically, I went viral. Barstool and BuzzFeed shared videos of me. Before long, I had to get an agent—TDA, The Dog Agency. They handle all the furry influencers.
But, let me tell you, life is full of ups and downs. When Mom and Dad decided that I wasn’t going to be having any pups of my own, I had to have … well, let’s just call it the “snip-snip.” And, as if that weren’t enough, the surgery caused some thyroid issues, and I put on a few extra pounds.

“I’ve been working hard on my physical therapy, so I got rewarded
WestClay.”
Dad says I was the victim of dog bullying and fat shaming. All I know is that people on the internet can be cruel. But Mom and Dad take the best care of me, and I’ve been working toward my healthy weight.
Most recently, I dislocated my hip. I love to swim, and I love to dock dive. But, ultimately, it was running to my food bowl that took me down. Thankfully, I’m back on my paws and trying to be patient as I heal from surgery.
Dad says I still get 50 to 100 messages a day that read, “Thank you for sharing Garth with us” and “Garth helped me through some of my darkest days” and even “Garth saved my life.”
“To us, it’s just posting fun videos,” Dad says. “To other people, it obviously means a lot more.”
I’m so glad I can make a difference in people’s lives just by being myself.

BRING YOUR CHILD’S DREAMS TO LIFE BY ADDING A LITTLE “CHARACTER” TO YOUR NEXT PARTY
DREAM COME TRUE
Character photos provided by Once Upon a Princess
Like many little girls, Ashley Jantz grew up dreaming of being a princess. Unlike most little girls, Jantz is living her dream.
Nearly ten years ago when someone invited a friend to portray an ice queen at an event, Jantz agreed to step in as her snow sister. She had no idea at the time that decision would turn into a dream come true. When the two friends saw how popular the sibling princesses were with kids and parents alike, Jantz decided to start Once Upon a Princess.
Today, Jantz works full-time filling her calendar with up to 50 parties a month and managing a cast of around 30 talented contracted performers who play more than 100 characters from princesses to superheroes—and even some villains.
“It’s such an incredible feeling to see kids’ full-blown belief that we are the real princess,” Jantz says. “The squeals and giggles I could live off those forever.”
With ten years under her princess party peplum, Jantz has gathered tips and tricks for a party that is practically perfect in every way.
Do Your Research. Look for locally-owned character companies, read reviews and ask questions. Steer clear of national companies that might offer better pricing but often cancel at the last minute.
Allow Time to Prepare. Every minute you have planned is going to take two, so set aside plenty of time for preparation— more than you think you will need.
CONTINUED >
“THE
WORLD NEEDED A LITTLE MAGIC.
WHAT BETTER WAY THAN WITH PRINCESSES!”
Remember the Necessities. Phone chargers and lighters for birthday candles are the two most commonly forgotten items, according to Jantz. In fact, she and her cast members often carry extras.
Think Through Timing. Power-down the bounce house when characters arrive to eliminate distractions. On the other hand, plan to serve cake at just the right time to create a diversion from the characters when they leave.
Let Kids Be Kids. Little boys like princesses, and little girls like superheroes. That’s okay. Allow kids to participate in whatever activities or take pictures with whichever characters they choose.
Give Yourself Grace. A party doesn’t have to be big to be special. It also doesn’t have to be Pinterest perfect to be a success. Expect the unexpected, and give yourself grace when the party doesn’t go exactly as planned.
Be Present. The greatest gift you can give your child isn’t a perfect party or even a present. It’s your presence. Parents tend to get so wrapped up in all the details, they forget to just be in the moment. Hand your camera to someone else so that you don’t miss out on being part of the magic you helped to create.

Lunch Money Boutique Offers An Exclusive
Selection of Children’s Clothing
HEAD OF THE CLASS
ARTICLE BY AMY ADAMS
PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIANNA RICHARDSON PHOTOGRAPHY
When Shallan Hazlewood’s husband was growing up, he used to ride his bike to the local Baskin-Robbins. From that same location today, Hazlewood serves up the cutest of children’s clothes.
“When my kids were younger, it was really hard for me to find quality kid’s clothing,” Hazlewood says.
So when the space at 5617 N. Illinois St. became available, Hazlewood knew that she wanted to open a children’s clothing boutique.
On the facing page, from left: Noah wears a striped shirt and shorts from Hebe; Moira is dressed in a pickleball print from Hebe; Liam sports a Mini Rodini green tennis sweatshirt with Mayoral chino shorts; and Nora models a striped dress from Hebe. The leather sandals are from Young Soles, and the canvas sneakers are from Bensimon. All backpacks and lunchboxes are from STATE Bags, and the sunglasses are store exclusives.
From left, Nora's bunny purse comes from Mimi and Lula, and Moira's straw purse comes from Bobo Choses.
Having owned a bed, bath and home accessory boutique in Chicago, Hazlewood knew launching another retail store was right up her alley. This August marks two years since Lunch Money Boutique opened its doors to parents, grandparents, gift givers and their favorite kiddos.
“Our customers are great,” Hazlewood says. “We have a very neighborhood feel."
Store manager Annie Stultz says she and Hazlewood travel to market twice a year, in February and July. In New York City, they visit multiple showrooms representing a wide variety of
clothing lines, and in Chicago they shop a few favorite brands. The end result is that the clothing lines shoppers will find at Lunch Money Boutique are not ones they will see elsewhere in the area.
“Annie has a great eye for fashion,” Hazlewood says. “She has a two-year-old, and it’s helpful to see the world through her eyes and what she wears.”
Stultz says that color blocking in primary and jewel tones will be popular this season, along with Jacquard knits, painterly prints and chunky corduroy.
From left, Noah wears a Mayoral navy knit polo with striped pants; Nora looks adorable in a Bobo Choses plaid dress, straw hat and purse; Moira models a Mayoral white eyelet top with Dotty Dungarees striped overalls; and Liam has on a Mayoral navy striped sweater with Miles the Label rust linen shorts. The kids' books come from the Little People, Big Dreams series.

“Never worry about what brands you put together,” Stultz says. “I think it’s important to buy staple pieces that can be interchanged with more special, dynamic pieces. Mayoral is great for making classic items that look good with more unique pieces from brands like Molo and Mini Rodini.”
In a world full of fast fashion, Lunch Money Boutique focuses on sustainable companies that manufacture clothing in respect of people, animals and the environment.
“These clothes are special,” Hazlewood says. “They’re very durable and will last. We like the idea of them being passed down to siblings.”

Four Local Nonprofits Ease the Transition Into Safe Homes for People and Pets
A Safe Space
ARTICLE BY AMY ADAMS
The most vulnerable among us are those who cannot help themselves—children and pets. Thankfully, our area has multiple organizations that step in to fill the gap and meet the needs in the community. Here are several nonprofits to consider when looking to lend support.
The Humane Society for Hamilton County
One of the only open admission shelters in the country, the Humane Society for Hamilton County does whatever it takes to give every animal the chance to live. The organization has worked tirelessly to achieve a 98 percent or higher live placement rate since 2014. At the Woofstock Survivor 5K & Dog Walk at Four Day Ray Brewing on Saturday, August 10, participants, including leashed and in-stroller dogs, can support life-saving medical care for animals in need. Sponsored by Canine Cloud Nine and Smitten Kitten Cat Cafe, registration features shirts, swag and finisher medals. For more, visit hamiltonhumane.com

Isaiah 117 House
When children are removed from their homes, they are usually brought to a child welfare services office. They often have nothing with them and are scared and lonely. Isaiah 117 provides comforting homes for children in these transitional situations where they can receive the care they need while they await placement. Isaiah 117 House Golf Tournaments will be held Thursday, September 26, at 11:30 a.m. at the Golf Club of Indiana, and Monday, September 30, at 8:30 a.m. at Eagle Creek Golf Club (Pines) and in other locations throughout Indiana. For more, visit isaiah117house.com .
Prevail, Inc. of Hamilton County
Since 1986, Prevail has been advocating for victims of crime and abuse on their path to healing, while engaging the community to support safe, healthy relationships. In the past year alone, Prevail has assisted more than 3,100 local survivors in crisis and support services. Prevail’s Annual Celebration of Hope Gala will be Saturday, August 17, at 6 p.m. at Embassy Suites by Hilton Noblesville Indianapolis Conference Center and will include dinner, drinks and a silent auction. Donations to Prevail aid in creating safe spaces for all. For more about the gala and to donate, visit prevailinc.org
Redemption Rescue
Redemption Rescue is an all-breed animal rescue comprising a network of fosters who work together to save abandoned, sick and injured dogs and cats. Volunteers see that the animals are treated, socialized and ready for “furever” homes, advocate for all breeds and help prevent unwanted litters. LiveLovePaint Studio will host Paint Your Pet Fundraisers on Wednesdays, August 14 and August 21, at 6:30 p.m. with pre-sketched canvases and professional instruction to allow you to unleash your creativity while supporting Redemption Rescue. For registration, go to livelovepaintstudio.com/events. For more information about Redemption Rescue, visit redemptionrescueinc.com
