Beyond the Race Insights for Success in Competitive Cycling

As Spring gives way to Summer, let's take a moment to appreciate the season's beauty and the special role that fathers, grandfathers, and father figures have played in our lives. Whether it's fishing with our dads, gardening with our grandfathers, or playing outdoors with our partners and children, these shared experiences remind us of the importance of family and the joy that comes from spending time together.

In this issue, we celebrate the men who have helped shape Carmel, including: a local athlete who has influenced the cycling scene, a chef who has elevated BBQ cuisine, and some great outdoor dining options to enjoy with the important men in your life. We also highlight some recent home trends and showcase local non-profits that are making our community stronger.

As we reflect on the impact that men have had on our lives and our city, let's express gratitude for their support, guidance, and listening ear when we needed it most. Carmel wouldn't be what it is today without the dedication and care of the men who helped build it. Let's take a moment to honor and thank them.

MATT TANNER SHARES INSIGHTS FOR ACHIEVING SUCCESS IN COMPETITIVE CYCLING.

At the heart of Matt Tanner's cycling club lies the belief that fitness is both physical and mental. For over two decades, Matt has been building a community centered around bicycles. As a competitive cyclist, Matt consistently performs at the highest levels, pushing his body to the limit in training camps across the globe and races like the Tour de France and Iceland's The Rift. But for Matt, cycling is more than just a sport - it's a way to connect people from all walks of life.

In 2012, Matt and his wife, Chris, founded Rollfast Cycling Club to promote safe cycling, grow the sport, and build community around the bike. Today, the club welcomes members of all skill levels, from casual riders to competitive cyclists. Rollfast's mission fosters a passion for cycling, mental and physical health, and camaraderie while helping others.

While Matt is known for his competitive cycling success, he's also focused on cultivating a culture of mental fitness in the sport. In 2019, Matt and his team launched Rollfast Live. This anonymous text chat connects cyclists and others with a professional ready to listen to their struggles and offer support.

Matt has also made a significant impact on the local community. He organized the Rollfast Gran Fondo and partners with the City to host Bike Carmel, both events that promote cycling and community building.

For Matt, cycling isn't just a physical activity, but a way of life that brings people together. His dedication to growing the sport, promoting mental fitness, and building community through cycling serves as an inspiration for anyone looking to get involved with the cycling community. In this article, he shares insights on achieving success in competitive cycling.

PREPPING FOR A RACE

One to two weeks before a race, out come the checklists: equipment, how to fuel up for the event based on the terrain, his supplement regimen, and even goals for the event. Believe it or not though, winning isn’t always the goal. Matt shared, “There's events when I'm racing with people and my goal is to shelter them and teach them how to race. For that race, my goal might just be to help somebody learn during the race.”

The physical work needed to prepare is done at this point, so race day becomes more mental and about reflecting. “During the pre-race, and the day of, I have a printout on a clipboard and I just write down notes as the day goes through.” Notes he then uses to prepare for his next event.

TRAINING AND ROUTINE MATTERS

“I have to have a routine to thrive. If my routine gets off, from the moment it’s interrupted, the day feels unproductive and it's not healthy.” Waking up each day at 5am (with no alarm) his day is planned out like clockwork. From meals to relaxation, walking the dog to working, Matt is an avid scheduler, always ensuring he carves out enough time to train.

“There's yearly, cyclical progression in our training and the training plans. So, I know roughly every four weeks, I'm gonna have a rest week.” It is important to plan rest because, as Matt progresses through each week of his training routine, he understands there will inevitably be a less demanding portion of the regimen.

BEST ADVICE

“Consistency is really the most important thing. I stress this to the athletes I coach all the time.” He believes anyone who wants to be more competitive in cycling must maintain the mind and body connection. “You have to make training a priority and do your workouts. I train five days a week and get two days off.”

If you’re just looking for enjoyment when riding, consistency isn’t as important. “If you’re looking to just begin, join us at our next Bike Carmel event. It’s a safe way to try out a new sport.”

KEEPING THE BALANCE

Matt's structured routine allows him to manage his energy output efficiently. He tries to plan his heavier workload and community involvement during weeks when he knows his training routine will be less challenging. Additionally, when events such as Bike Carmel are approaching, he sets aside dedicated time to support them.

Matt and his wife Chris also emphasize the balance of proper nutrition and supplementation. Together, they founded MC Nutrition. Matt created Strate Fuel, a dietary supplement drink mix that resolved nutritional issues he encountered during training and race performance, and Chris created Uminus20, a dietary supplement for enhanced cellular renewal.

Big hearts, community leaders, and visionaries. When we think about nonprofits, these types of descriptors come to mind. Nonprofits are often the driving force in our society and work tirelessly to champion causes close to their hearts and ours. These three Carmelbased organizations are dedicated to serving the public good by addressing various social, economic, and educational issues. Their work relies on the support of volunteers and community members to make a difference, as they often operate with limited resources. Their deep sense of passion and commitment to making the world a better place brightens the futures of those they serve and the communities they call home. Often, their missions rely on the kindness and generosity of donors who share their vision for a better world. Today, we can easily become disconnected to this work, so it is more important than ever to honor and appreciate the unwavering commitment of our communities' nonprofits. Here are a few of our favorites from around Carmel.

THE CHILDREN’S THERAPLAY FOUNDATION

The Children's TherAplay Foundation is a licensed therapy facility providing physical, occupational, and speech therapy to children with disabilities. Using hippotherapy (horses) as a tool for accelerating physical, emotional, and behavioral development. TherAplay has been treating children aged 18 months to 13 years for over two decades. Some transformational outcomes include children with mobility limitations taking their first steps and non-verbal children speaking their first words. www.childrenstheraplay.org

CARMEL SWIM CLUB GIVE A NOTE FOUNDATION

More than just a swimming club, CSC is a community-driven organization with a national presence. Guided by its mission statement of "teaching excellence through swimming, for life," nearly 500 young athletes aged 6-18 participate in the competitive team each week. Since 1973, CSC's highly-trained and decorated coaching staff have been dedicated to nurturing and developing young people in central Indiana to lead successful and fulfilling lives.

Founded in 2011 in partnership with the National Association for Music Education, Give a Note Foundation was created to strengthen music education opportunities for all students. Their unique grant system offers direct financial support to underserved schools, empowering them to allocate funds where they are needed most, like introducing new music classes, purchasing musical instruments or providing equipment for concerts. Every contribution provides students with the transformative advantages of music education.

Big Hoffa's Beginnings

HOW A BORN-AND-RAISED CALIFORNIAN BECAME AN AWARD-WINNING BBQ PITMASTER IN INDIANA.

Few things evoke feelings of warmth and nostalgia like the memories we have of our family kitchens. For Adam Hoffman, known around Indiana and Carmel as "Big Hoffa," these memories are particularly special. Growing up in a large, Californian family, he was lucky to be a part of a household where food was the heart and soul of their home. Even as a young child, he found himself drawn to the kitchen, eager to learn and help out in any way he could.

“I was always watching Mom cook and watching my grandma bake and I really, really got involved in cooking with my family and learning the recipes. I saw the work that was put in and I saw the end product, and for me I was hooked. From a very young age, I knew I was gonna open a restaurant.”

Originally Adam’s culinary career took him into corporate management for California Pizza Kitchen, but he continued cooking. “I was always barbecuing at home in order to get my friends over to the house. If they knew I was grilling ribs, they were over, and I always liked that.” But his original plan to purchase a backyard smoker for his home in California turned into a permanent move to Indiana.

In 2003, while searching online for a smoker, Adam found a man in Anderson, Indiana who was constructing big food truck trailers. The discovery sparked his interest, prompting him to buy a plane ticket for a weekend trip to Indiana; however, this impromptu adventure completely altered his life's path. Two weeks later, he packed all of his belongings, bid farewell to loved ones, and purchased a food truck, moving to Indiana to establish his own enterprise in the Midwest.

Although it may seem extreme, this decision was exactly what Adam needed to kickstart his career as a chef. Despite encountering numerous challenges while launching his business, he refused to be deterred by setbacks and persevered with his vision, ignoring any negative influences along the way.

Getting a little choked up he recalls what it was like, early in his business when Noblesville no longer granted his food truck permit extension, “I was literally driving around in my car looking for an empty building thinking this is it, this is my last day. I was a guy in tears saying, I don't want to be a failure. I don't want to go back home to California. I want to prove that I can do this.”

That’s when he found his current Big Hoffa’s home: 800 E. Main Street in Westfield, Indiana. A former gun shop adjacent to an antique mall became the humble beginnings for what is now his 300+ person restaurant. Little by little, he took over the space. “I never meant to become a big business, but when people were waiting 30-40 minutes in line just to order, I knew I needed to expand.”

While in the beginning he was cooking, cleaning, and running the business, nowadays he can focus on developing new menu items and supporting local causes. “We're big supporters of the Indiana Wish Foundation, local law enforcement, and first responders.” His belief in giving back directly corresponds to his positive nature.

Adam currently lives in Carmel with his beautiful wife and two sons. When he’s not in his restaurant, he and his family are traveling the world making memories and looking for inspiration for his next big menu item.
