LIFESTYLE LETTER

We create community by joining it. Home. So much is contained in that one little word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning that home holds is universal. For me, home has been in two states. I grew up in Oklahoma, but I found my Indiana home after meeting my husband. Author Wendy Wunder said, “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.”As we prepared this issue and thought about home - we wanted to highlight what makes it special to our readers. That of course includes the food and drinks, the aesthetic and design, but most importantly - the people. Carmel City Lifestyle is about building authentic community connections, creative expression through art and the written word, and telling the stories of our amazing community. As we celebrate our first issue of this publication, I celebrate the people and businesses that make Carmel unique. I also celebrate my own family. My husband and I are parents to two young children Sylvia (4) and Emerson (2) and we have two dogs named Turner and Max. Together we call Carmel home and we are laying down deep roots in this community. My colleagues and I feel like the lucky ones as we get to learn more about the businesses and individuals who comprise this city. We hope this unique lens into their lives and work brings people in this community together. As you flip through the pages of this issue, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people around you - in your city, your neighborhood, and most of all - your home. We want readers to keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover. We want you to cherish it as coffee table art or an accessory to your home. We feel proud to create a resource that represents all of us and will strive every month to deliver the value you expect. I am excited to expand City Lifestyle to Carmel to tell all the amazing stories and positive things happening around us. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home.

COMPASSION MEETS POSTPARTUM COMMITMENT How postpartum care in the "fourth trimester" is saving lives and supporting WHAT IS THE MISSION OF POSTPARTUM CARE OF INDIANA?

other mothers. Welcoming a newborn into the world is traditionally seen as a time of joy and excitement. While that’s the hope and desire of many families, reality can present other physical and emotional challenges. Unpredictable sleep patterns, balancing new routines and medical difficulties often leads to a gap in care for women. That’s why having a plan for Mom’s postpartum care is equally as important as Baby’s.

We prepare new moms with education and coaching for their postpartum body, mind, and soul. We want to change the conversation around postpartum care so new moms can find stability and confidence to tackle the fourth trimester. The “fourth trimester,” or the 12 weeks following childbirth, is equally important to pregnancy. Mothers should expect continued medical care and support; yet, this is not a common practice. With 83% of pregnancy-associated deaths in Indiana occurring postpartum, 90% of those being preventable, we have to change the system for postpartum care.

WHEN AND HOW DID YOU BEGIN BUILDING YOUR BUSINESS? PPCI was the result of combining my personal experiences as a new mom and the power knowledge and education can provide to save lives. I had been a nurse practitioner for twelve years when I became a mom, but I still wasn’t prepared for how alone and uncertain I felt about motherhood. My husband was so loving and supportive, but I was still overwhelmed. Thankfully, I found my way back to wellness by becoming a self-advocate for my needs. Then, in January 2022, one of my best friends almost lost her life 5 days postpartum. Her condition was completely preventable, and I was beyond frustrated her care team missed her needs. I knew I needed to share my knowledge with others, so on January 2 of this year, while on maternity leave with my third child, I started a business focused on postpartum care for moms.

WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY LIKE AS PPCI'S FOUNDER? In between my time as a clinician for Myriad Genetics and being a mom to three boys under three, I am building my telehealth business. Each day looks a little different, but along with my team, I am usually holding new patient visits, reviewing session notes, researching best-practices, and holding follow-up appointments. We are determined and focused to develop a continuity of care plan for moms to meet their physical and emotional needs while building a community.

WHAT TYPE OF SUPPORT CAN PATIENTS EXPECT? To make sure we meet the needs of new moms, we focus on five essential areas for postpartum care: preparation, sleep and rest, nutrition, companionship, and coaching. When a patient CONTINUED >

reaches out for services, they have access to two nurse practitioners, a cardiac ICU nurse, and if needed, a bereavement nurse. Everyone on our staff is a mom, and four out of five have recently had a child. This summer, we will add an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant to our staff. For anything else a mom might need, we tap into our robust network of referral partners.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ADVICE FOR MOTHERHOOD? In the early days of postpartum recovery, companionship is so important. My mom told me after I had my first child to “always say yes to help.” So, even if it meant a double coffee delivery or a food train overflow, I learned to accept help because people generally won’t offer unless they want to do it. Regarding motherhood, just try to stay in the moment. Each phase is a season, and thinking too far ahead or creating “what ifs” for the future can easily overwhelm you.

HOW CAN READERS SUPPORT YOUR MISSION? I want PPCI to become part of the postpartum standard of care for all women in Indiana. If you are willing to open doors to hospitals and healthcare facilities for partnership opportunities, I want to hear from you. If you are or know of a mom who is two years or less postpartum, reach out to us for support. Connect with Stacia Scott at stacia@ ppcareindy.com or visit PPCareIndy. com to download free resources and schedule a free consultation.

A New Way to Work, Meet, and Live CoHatch designs shared working spaces with the local community in mind.

ARTICLE BY DANIELLE DAUGHERTY PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARMEL COHATCH

Since March of 2020, the way we work evolved to fit a mobile lifestyle. Whether you work completely remote, hybrid, or spend most of your time back in the office, COhatch Carmel has designed shared working spaces with you in mind. “We want you to work here and meet here, but we also want it to be an extension of your home,” explains Mary-Kris McWhinney, Community Manager for Carmel COhatch. COhatch Carmel was the 21st location of the franchise and opened its doors in late August of 2022. The Ohio-based company was founded in 2016, and the original idea was simple: take entrepreneurs, small businesses owners, nonprofits, startups and/or social enterprises, and give them a place to gather inside re-imaged brick and mortar spaces. Vacant or underutilized buildings became the perfect place to create micro

communities for 24/7 access to a better way to work and live. McWhinney points out how this space follows the same pattern, “In our design [of Carmel COhatch] we gave a nod to the history of the building.” Each meeting space reflects the past use of the building: the Noir Room’s theme showcases how the building used to be a silent film theater; the Station 38 conference room pays homage to the building’s history as Carmel’s first fire station. Carmel COhatch is in the former antique mall, and this specific location was chosen because it’s in downtown, in the heart of the community. Most members are within walking distance, so this naturally promotes connection. Chief Executive Officer and COhatch founder Matt Davis says, “By providing a center of gravity for the community

and offering tools and amenities to flourish, members thrive through our collaborative and innovative approach to community.” COhatch aims to serve as a community hub. The 24/7 memberships range from day passes, monthly access, to unlimited. While anyone can become a member, most people who land at COhatch are either working from home or a hybrid work environment. They want to keep the work-from-home feel outside of their house, yet they are ready to collaborate like they are still in an office. On top of beautiful coworking spaces, COhatch offers members a place to hold milestone moments. “Members can use our event spaces for free. So, if you have a big birthday, a graduation party, a baby shower, a wedding shower or [even] a small wedding…you can celebrate those free of charge in our event space after hours or on the weekends,” McWhinney shared. While weddings aren’t something a person might consider at Carmel COhatch, a membership gets you access to all spaces around townincluding former churches. Non-members can also reach out to learn how to utilize the space for their own milestone moments. COhatch also enjoys supporting the community in many ways. They offer nonprofits, startups, and civic organizations scholarship options to meet their budgets. Several times a year, COhatch hosts Merchant Meet-Ups where local and small business owners learn about the city, network, and connect. Each month, members also enjoy social events, while members and non-members can enjoy programs for helping their businesses grow. After these type of events, McWhinney shared, “They start to depend on each other, not just for business contacts, but for friendship. Even [some members] in similar businesses start sharing strategies and ideating beyond our walls.” COhatch Carmel is home to over 75 coworking seats, 32 private offices, and 20-40 person event venues! So whether you’re in the mood to network with your neighbors, fly solo, or host an event, COhatch Carmel has an amazing space for you! Stop by for a tour and see all the ways you can work, meet, and live in your own community! Hosting the Perfect Dinner Party PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

Your next event, served alfresco Catering experts Chef Kyle and Hannah Williams, owners of Savor & Swirl culinary company, create an outdoor dinner party with chef-driven perennial dishes served in beautiful seasonal settings. For this alfresco dinner party, Chef Kyle draws on his favorite recipes updated for a modern palate and paired with wine selections to complement the bountiful feast.

Insider Tips for Hosting: • Build a menu around the season. Start with what produce is available locally based on the season for the most authentic meal experience. For instance, Chef Kyle says “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” but that meal served in the heat of Summer wouldn’t hit the same. In-season fruits and vegetables will always be of highest quality and best taste. • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says.

22

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

• Draw inspiration from the season’s colors and temperatures. For Spring and Summer, think flowers, fresh herbs and linens. For Fall, think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” For Winter, head indoors to create a cozy environment for guests to connect. • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with bur - nished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!” •

As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.” Insider Tips for Hosting: “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.”

Fresh Roasted Brussels Sprouts & Hardwood Smoked Bacon

Heirloom Root Vegetable Hash Yield: 6-10 servings

Yield: 6 servings • 4 cups Brussels sprouts, raw, halved • 1-2 tablespoons olive oil • ¼ cup yellow onion, sliced • 1 tablespoon garlic, sliced thin • 1-2 cups bacon, smoked, thick cut, large dice • Salt, pepper to taste • 2 tablespoons real butter, unsalted • Optional garnish: 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped

METHOD OF PREPARATION: 1. Preheat oven to 400 °F for convection setting, (425 °F conventional). 2. In mixing bowl, add oil and cut raw Brussels sprouts. Season with salt and pepper. 3. Place seasoned sprouts on baking sheet and bake in oven until done, about 20-40 minutes (soft yet still with good texture and crispy edges with some dark brown color). Remove from oven. 4. Place large sauté pan on medium heat and render bacon. Add a splash of olive oil to get it going, if needed. Cook until bacon is crispy and golden brown, 5-10 minutes. 5. Add onions to pan and cook until soft, 5-8 minutes. 6. Turn heat to high and add garlic and butter and cook for 1 minute. 7. Add roasted Brussels sprouts to pan and toss all together. Season to taste with salt and pepper. 8. For optional garnishes, add fresh chopped parsley. 9. Serve and enjoy!

CHEF NOTES: • If Brussels sprouts are large, cut in quarters. • Rendering bacon means extracting the bacon fat which adds a lot of flavor to the dish.

ELEVATE YOUR CLOSET 8 WAYS TO O R G A N I Z E A N D

Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our eight tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love. A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

USE R EAL ESTATE W ISELY Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

03 04 NEGATIVE SPACE

Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.

FACE CLOTHES THE SA ME DIR ECTION

It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.

BAG & SHOE STOR AGE Alternate the way shoes are facing. This ultimately helps fit more on each row and provide a visually appealing way to display those prized possessions. Everyone understands the frustration of searching for that one clutch when rushing out for the evening. Bags benefit from a space all their own. Get clear container storage for small bags and purses so you can locate and access them easily. CONTINUED > AP R I L 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / CA R M E L

UPGR ADED HA NGERS The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:

07 08 LIGHTING

Lighting is everything in a closet. Gone are the days of dim recessed lighting being sufficient. Consider adding a statement lighting fixture like a chandelier or pendant that provides ample bright lighting to your space, no matter how big or small.

M AK E A STATEMENT

Why use an armchair when you have room for a sofa? Slide up a stool and colorful area rug to complete the look. If you have excessive wall space, consider a mini gallery wall or a statement wall with wallpaper to polish things off.

Sleep Inside, Outside

Photography by Valtteri Hirvonen

3 Incredible places to (literally) sleep under the stars

It’s always magical to spend a night sleeping under the stars. In decades past, adventure seekers have packed the SUV or camper with tents and gear for ‘roughin’ it’ in the great outdoors. But the swanky and exploding category of luxury outdoor hotel is something to investigate for an unforgettable, next-level experience. For those who prefer glamping rather than pitching their own tent fireside, here are a few options that incorporate sweeping views and a unique opportunity for travelers to be more authentically embedded in the landscape of the place they’re visiting. These resorts have bucket list-worthy rooms that capture the best of both the luxury resort experience and the outdoors. Whether you crave the dry heat of the remote Utah desert or the luminous beauty of the Northern Lights, we’ve curated a short list of some places you *must* check out.

Photography by Pacuare Lodge

Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, Finland These arctic igloos make Urho Kekkonen National Park look like a dreamy winter wonderland. Snuggle up inside the glassroofed globe and watch the dancing northern lights overhead. Get immersed in the world of northern lights, midnight sun and other miracles of this world-renowned arctic resort. Just bundle up before stepping outside – temperatures can drop to -22 degrees!

Pacuare Lodge, Costa Rica This jungle hideaway is so out there, you have to whitewater raft down a river or ride a gondola to get there. A network of hanging bridges connect the villas, which have thatched roofs, plantation teak wood floors, rattan furniture and private plunge pools. In the evening, zip 400 feet down a cable for a meal at the Nest, a platform at the top of a ceiba tree, then take a night-time stroll along romantic pathways lit by candles and lanterns.

Amangiri, Utah In southern Utah, Amangiri is a five star resort perfect for an adventurous weekend in the desert. However, it is the simple rooms built to emphasize the beauty of Canyon Point that truly make it an incredible place to stay. Each suite has an outdoor lounge and fireplace with private pools or rooftop terraces available too. Don’t miss a dip in the ‘gram-worthy pool, which wraps around the landscape’s curved dunes and arid plateaus.
