Lifestyle Letter

Our Children...

W

here does a mother, coach, teacher, youth group leader, auntie and someday grandmother, begin to share... Of all of my letters to you, this one has me pondering the most deeply. I know this, I would be a very different person had I not experienced the challenges, mistakes, frustrations, exhaustion, commitments, delights, joys and LOVE of raising my two daughters. Although I believe it was my charge to raise them into healthy, capable servant leaders, ironically, it is their influence and the journey of parenting that has molded me into who I am today. Parenting has become in some ways, even more challenging than it was when my girls were growing up. So many choices, so much pressure to perform, whether in the classroom, the playing field or their physical appearance. I had the good fortune to raise my daughters in the mountains of Colorado and Montana. I could bundle them up and toss them outside to explore and adventure. Not that they did not have their share of swim lessons, music lessons and organized sports, but the pressure was light and the majority of time was spent just playing. As children head back to school, we have reached out to a variety of resources so that we might share with you ideas for your children’s health, safety, education and play. Although this is a power-packed issue, we still had to cut out a few stories, as there was just not room for them all. We have decided to continue throughout the next few months to present highlights and information for parents, coaches, teachers and grandmas and grandpas...so stay tuned. A glorious surprise is tucked inside this issue for those of you who work tirelessly to positively influence the lives of children. Escape with us as we take you to a grand Italian setting for an evening of exquisite culinary and sensory delights, right here in Carlsbad. Bon Appetit! My prayers and encouragement for all who help care for our children. We are forever grateful. Thank you to our children who bless us every day with incredible, consuming love that fills and motivates. It is to you that we dedicate the September issue.

SUPPORTS MUSIC! ARTICLE ARI MORRISON

T

he Carlsbad Educational Foundation (CEF) Board recently approved grant funding for Carlsbad Unified School District’s

music programs in the first semester of the 2017-18 school year. The projected cost is between $250,000-$300,000 for the school year. This grant provides each elementary school the opportunity to offer 45 minutes of weekly music instruction to every student. CEF’s mission is to invest in our children’s future through education for all students in the Carlsbad Unified School District by developing and funding impactful programs. CEF support is provided to ensure that every Kindergarten through fifth grade student in Carlsbad Unified School District has access to high-quality music as an essential component of their public education. Programs must adhere to the K-12 music standards and a portion of the program’s funding provide support for training and coordination of the program across the nine school sites. Positive impact of music at an early age is proven. An article from the Community School of the Arts at Wheaton College states, “Researchers at the Boston Children’s Hospital worked with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and found early musical training enhances the areas of the brain responsible for executive functioning. Children with at least two years of lessons showed enhanced cognitive control, with aids in information retention and behavior regulation. ‘Musical training may actually help to set up children for a better academic future,’ said Senior Investigator Nadine Gaab, PhD, of the Laboratories of Cognitive Neuroscience.” Brandon Blackmon, a 2017 CEF Student Scholarship recipient, is going to college to study Music Technology because he had the opportunity to experience music funded by CEF. He said that without Elementary Music education and theatre, he would not be headed in the career path he is today. Karen Cavicchio, a 2017 CEF Student Scholarship recipient also describes Elementary Music education as being the first step in her musical career. She began playing violin in fifth grade and rose to become concert mistress of both the school orchestra and of San Diego Civic Youth Orchestra, one of the top three orchestras in the county. Karen is attending college at UCLA and plans to study Computer Science and Engineering. "It's important for students to explore various viewpoints and how they are shaped by factors such as economics, religious faith, history, and geography," Silk said. "You need to put yourself in someone else's shoes to really understand the dynamics at play in any conflict."

“It’s difficult to be apathetic when you connect with real people and hear their stories,” he said. “Experiencing compassion in those situations is especially impactful for teenagers.” Silk’s belief in young people can also be found in his work with Hands of Peace, an interfaith peace-building organization that brings

According to Dr. Bob Ogle, Pacific Ridge’s Head of School, the way Silk blends his personal interests with his work at the school makes him an outstanding educator. INSPIRATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR YOUNG ASPIRING PERFORMERS ARTICLE KRISTIANNE KURNER

26

Carlsbad Lifestyle | September 2017

N

ew Village Arts (NVA) is a cultural hub for Carlsbad and North County San Diego, with award-winning theatre, local

music, vibrant visual arts and thriving education and outreach programs. This summer’s hit production of BUDDY: THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY sold out nearly every show in its 6-week run. While theatre is the main focus of the company, NVA has an expanding series of education and outreach programs to serve all members of the community. Below, we highlight five of those programs. NVA has been providing professional theatre experiences in the local high schools for more than a decade. The latest program is VERBITAS: a documentary theatre project held last year at Sage Creek High School and the Army and Navy Academy. With VERBITAS, students choose a topic relevant to their lives that they would like to explore through theatre. They then conduct interviews in the community to deepen their understanding of the topic. Under the guidance of NVA’s professional teaching artists, they put the interviews together into a performance inspired by actual people and real events. NVA will be returning to Sage Creek High School and the Army and Navy Academy this year, and expanding into El Camino High School. NVA also brings Shakespeare into local schools, most recently with productions of ROMEO & JULIET and AS YOU LIKE IT at Sage Creek. NVA’s directors lead students through a full production of a Shakespeare play, bringing the magic and mastery of language to life. For the younger students, NVA offers Aleta Barthell’s KIDS ACT. With weekly acting classes for students ages 4-17, this unique program focuses on original storytelling, Shakespeare and improvisation. Camps are offered year-round. A program born out of KIDS ACT and local actor and teacher Samantha Ginn, MONDAY NIGHT LIVE! is an improvisation class for special needs teenagers. The program was expanded into a full production of THE LITTLE PRINCE in July. This production, sponsored by the National Foundation for Autism Research, the Nordson Foundation, Centre ARTES at Cal State San Marcos and the City of Carlsbad Arts Office, was a fantastic collaboration between professional designers, directors, actors, musicians, the students and their neuro-typical peers, and was performed at the Dove Library to enthusiastic crowds. A new program starting in the fall will be MINDFUL THEATRE, an improvisation class for seniors with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Research has shown that those individuals have about 35 seconds of short-term memory available, and that improvisation classes are a highly successful way to keep the brain as active as possible. newvillagearts.org September 2017 | Carlsbad Lifestyle
