WE’VE ALL HAD THAT MOMENT WHEN OUR CLOSET IS FULL BUT WE CAN’T FIND A SINGLE THING TO WEAR. Whether it’s too big, too small, or just plain last season, the perfect outfit can be difficult to find. It’s no wonder, too. Our style is the first thing the rest of the world sees, and whether or not we want to admit it, deep down we all care a little about how the world perceives us. With style being all around us in the form of clothing, hair, accessories, home decor or even food, we bring you our September issue—have you guessed it yet? The style issue! Whether you’re interested in a complete fall wardrobe refresh or are just looking for a few style pointers, we’re excited to share with you the stylings of Cape Coral. We’re not just into clothes and accessories, though. From local designers and

SIZ E MA T T E R S Is Your House Too Big for You? Over the past 40 years it is no surprise that homes that are being built offer more space. The median size of a new, single-family home in 2017 was 2,457 square feet, with a median sale price of $323,100, according to the US Census Bureau. Compare that to 1978, when 1655 square feet had a sale price of $55,700. Houses are larger overall, but that doesn’t mean it’s the right fit. Homeowners need to ask themselves a few questions to know if their home is the right size. Are there rooms that have not been used in months? Are there rooms still not furnished? Sometimes growth is needed for a growing family, but it may also be time for downsizing. A four bedroom is great when you have a house full of teenagers and hosting extended family for the holidays, but now all but your own bedroom is a guest room and you’re no longer hosting those family getaways. Spending money on space that is no longer used could be set aside for that “rainy day.” A classic empty nester problem is having all your kids’ belongings spanning from birth to college – and even beyond – with no real use for any of it. Trying to get your adult children to decide whether to hang onto their macaroni art from first grade at their own house or letting you toss it can be tough for both sides, but keep in mind that your home shouldn’t be used as a storage unit. Reach out to a professional. There is a wide variety of professionals in the real estate and organization industry that can help you make a smooth transition to a home that’s a better fit for you.

The HeartFlow Analysis available exclusively at Radiology Regional Center WHAT IS HEARTFLOW ANALYSIS? The HeartFlow Analysis is an advanced test that assesses coronary artery disease. It shows how each blockage impacts blood flow to your heart. • Greatly reduces unnecessary invasive testing • Effective at excluding false positive and false negative stress tests • Improves patient quality of life with more accurate diagnosis

“The HeartFlow Analysis showed me a picture of my arteries and blockage inside my arteries and made me realize this was an issue I needed to take care of. Without HeartFlow I’m not sure I’d be standing here today.” – Stephen B.

Stephen jogged regularly and noticed it was becoming harder to catch his breath. Traditional non-invasive tests showed no significant coronary artery disease. However, Stephen had a feeling something was not right. After learning about the HeartFlow Analysis, Stephen sought out the test hoping it would provide answers. He was right. Following the addition of HeartFlow Analysis to his CT Coronary Angiogram scan, his doctor received the answers needed to determine the next step in his treatment plan.

HOW DID YOU END UP OPENING YOUR BARBERSHOP HERE? I’ve been cutting hair for 12 years—it’s my passion. My cousin sugYoshi

gested I come over to Cape Coral and open this shop. We opened in September of 2017, and we already have five employees. We’ve been really fortunate. I’ve met a lot of great people here in Cape Coral. It’s very diverse, and I meet people from all over the world here. HOW MANY OF YOUR CLIENTS HAVE BEARDS? About 60 percent of our clients have beards. A lot of people saw our shop’s name and thought we specialized in beards. We do love working on beards, but we are also a full-service barbershop. DID YOU TRAIN SPECIFICALLY TO BE A BEARD BARBER? No, I just learned on the fly. The beard trend really started picking up about four years ago. I’ve learned a lot just by practicing. WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER FOR BEARDS? Most people want it just cleaned up and maintained. We trim and use a straight blade to shape the lines and then add beard product. People like having big beards, but they also want them to look tame. I usually suggest my clients come in about every two weeks, depending on their beard. WHAT ARE SOME ISSUES YOU SEE WITH BEARDS? I find the most common problem is dryness. A lot of clients ask for

Jimmy Salemi

Jimmy Salemi HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD A BEARD? I’ve had a beard since high school, so about 13 years now. IS THERE A REASON YOU DECIDED TO GROW YOUR BEARD? I just really liked the look of having a beard. My two kids have never even seen me without a beard. It’s currently the longest it’s ever been, but I’ve typically had some sort of facial hair since about age 17. DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIFIC GROOMING TECHNIQUES TO MAINTAIN YOUR BEARD? I never cut my beard myself. I always go to the barber and let the professionals do the job. I go to SpitFire Fades on Del Prado. The owner, Joe, does a fantastic job. WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU USE? I don’t use a lot of products, but when I do I use local products. Groomed Gorilla’s beard oil is one I really like. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PROS AND CONS OF HAVING A BEARD? The biggest con is when people ask to touch it. I really don’t mind that much, but it’s weird that people want to touch your face. The biggest pro is that I don’t have to wake up and shave every morning. That’s a big plus! Paul Gallaugher HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD A BEARD? I’ve been growing it on-and-off for about five years now. IS THERE A REASON YOU DECIDED TO GROW YOUR BEARD? I really just didn’t want to shave anymore. It’s just so much easier. DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIFIC GROOMING TECHNIQUES TO MAINTAIN YOUR BEARD? I get it regularly maintained by the barbers at Blackbeard, but I always make sure to wash and condition my beard at least twice a week. WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU USE? I use beard oil and beard balm. I don’t use a specific brand. I use whatever smells the best. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PROS AND CONS OF HAVING A BEARD? I think the biggest pro is that it protects your face from the sun. As for cons, I guess that would be getting food stuck in it or it getting in the way occasionally. There’s also that weird, itchy stage as you start growing it out, but overall I really think it’s fun to have a beard. WHAT TO WEAR: CAPE CORAL EDITION

THE LOOKE OF CAPE CORAL

LOOKING TO UPDATE YOUR LOOK? YOU WON’T HAVE TO TRAVEL FAR TO REVAMP YOUR WARDROBE ARTICLE SARAH KEECH PHOTOGRAPHY GREGORY WAGNER A LOT OF PEOPLE PROBABLY ASSUME THE UNIFORM OF CAPE CORAL IS SHORTS, T-SHIRTS AND FLIP-FLOPS YEAR-ROUND. In reality, many Cape Coral residents absolutely love fashion and enjoy shopping for the latest styles and trends. Just in time for Vogue’s famous annual September issue, we found some of the best fashion looks right here in the Cape.

THE LOOKE OF CAPE CORAL Sisters Stacy Gervais and Muffy Ellis moved all the way from Augusta, Maine, to start a new life and a new venture in Cape Coral. Their 2-year-old boutique, The Looke of Cape Coral—named for their mother’s maiden name— was a big project to undertake, but Stacy knew they could take it on. “I know clothes, and Muffy knows booze,” Stacy jokes. “My sister and I work so well together that I knew this would be the perfect idea for our own business. We were closing up our family’s Hallmark store in Maine, and we were on to the next adventure. That’s how our Champagne boutique in Cape Coral came to be.” Of course, the complimentary beverages and the waterfront location at Tarpon Point Marina Village don’t hurt. “This is a dream location,” Stacy says. “The view of the marina is amazing, and we get so many interesting people coming into the boutique. We have customers come in from all over the world. It’s so much fun!” When shopping for the Looke’s latest looks, the sisters tend to pick items that are a bit preppy, a bit retro and a bit girly. “We tend to go for things that have a lot of color, are body-conscious and just whimsical and fun,” Stacy says. “Doris Day, Marilyn Monroe, Gidget—those are our style icons around here.” Speaking of fun, The Looke is also a private party destination. For $100, anyone can rent out the store after hours for a “Champarty” for up to 15 guests. Each two-hour private event includes four bottles of Champagne, a platter of snacks, personal shopping advice from the sisters and a $50 gift card. “Our store feels like our home, and we want our customers to feel like our very special guests,” Stacy says. 5991 Silver King Blvd. #105A, Cape Coral, Florida, 239.205.6225, Facebook.com/TheLookeOfCapeCoral

Owner Cathy Sangiovanni opened Razzle Dazzle 28 years ago because she loves fashion—and because she didn’t exactly love working in real estate. Cathy is a member of one of Cape Coral’s pioneer families, and her family founded Raso Realty. “I was a real estate broker before I started Razzle Dazzle. To be honest, I was bored working in real estate,” Cathy says. “I’ve always loved to shop, and I wanted to do something a little more fun. I went to Atlanta to the clothing market with a friend. I saw everything they had to offer and knew Cape Coral could use a fun, fashionable store.” Cathy opened Razzle Dazzle in a small location in 1990 and initially sold accessories and T-shirts, but it wasn’t long before they increased their inventory offerings and the store moved to a larger space. “We’ve been in our current location about 24 years now,” she says. Cathy is very proud that many of the items and products sold at Razzle Dazzle are made in the USA. She also believes the personal service the store provides keeps her customers coming back time and time again. “I have a lot of dedicated clientele who love to be ‘razzle-dazzled!’” Cathy says. “We really carry things that appeal to everyone. I think anyone can find something they will love in our store.” Cathy holds fashion shows at Big Blue Brewery once a month to promote her most recent fashion finds. “The fashion shows are very well-received,” Cathy says. “We usually have about 150 people attend during season. My husband, Ralph, is the DJ, so he makes it fun. Ralph really helps me with so much at the store... we really do everything together. We are a team.” Cathy also credits Sharon Smith, her store manager of more than 20 years, for their success. “Sharon is like a daughter to me. She is so wonderful,” Cathy says. “It’s like a family here.” 1335 E. Cape Coral Parkway, Cape Coral, Florida, 239.945.7549, RazzleDazzleBoutiqueShop.com 24

Then I decided to go into business on my own.” Robin took over as the owner of Eva by the Sea this past January. “I’m absolutely loving it. I get to shop and dress up every day. It’s the fantasy I had as a little girl,” Robin says. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s also a lot of fun.” While she’s fairly new to retail ownership, Robin knows exactly what she’s looking for when deciding what to sell in her store. “I try to appeal to the wider audience, but I also want to specialize in items you can’t just find at the mall,” she says. “I want to offer unique and fun items, for all ages, shapes and sizes. We also look to offer items at all price points.” Eva by the Sea is conveniently located along the waterfront walkway of Tarpon Point Marina Village. The store also hosts private events to introduce their GET THIS LOOK: Robin’s dress is from

clientele to new products and fashion-related services. They even throw Botox parties! Robin says her transition to store owner has been a success due in part to her store manager, Cheryl Lundberg, who recently moved to Cape Coral from Minnesota. “She’s so wonderful,” Robin says of Cheryl. “She’s absolutely my right-hand woman.” 5971 Silver King Blvd., Cape Coral, Florida, 239.540.4480, EvaByTheSea.com
