One fantastic place to revel in the fun of fall is at Southern Fresh Farms in Fort Myers. Owned by a multi-generation farming family, Robert and Shelly McMahon's little farm paradise is open to the public to enjoy.

Four years ago they started their Fall Festival, which is every Saturday and Sunday in October. Admission to the festival is free. They offer hayrides ($2 per person), lots of pumpkins, farm-fresh produce, handcrafted food items, crafts, vendors and the kids can feed the animals at the petting farm or burn off some energy at the playground. But, of course, most kids who visit the farm want just one thing: a pumpkin. “We sell our pumpkins at really reasonable prices. We sell by the size, not by the pound,” Shelly says. "I want every little person to go home with a pumpkin of their own, so it’s very important to me to keep the prices affordable. We make sure to get a lot of smaller pumpkins so every little one gets to take one home. I’m a grandma, so I know what it means to them. I also love to see their faces light up.” During festival days, Shelly is also busy cooking up a storm! They plan to offer a menu that includes pulled pork, pork tenderloin and fish tacos. Shelly also makes her own salsa—made completely from ingredients on the farm. “She’s quite the cook!” Robert says. Shelly estimates 800 to 900 people visit per day during the festival. “It’s a lot, but the turnover is pretty fast, so it never feels too crowded,” she says. “We don’t charge admission or for parking because there are so few family-oriented activities or events that are free these days. We want everyone to feel welcome.” Not only is Southern Fresh Farms a fun, family-friendly local destination, it’s truly a working farm. They grow lots of produce, including tomatoes, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, beets radishes, strawberries, flowers and all sorts of peppers—even ghost peppers. “We sell what comes directly from the farm, so we have lots of great produce available most of the year,” Shelly says. “We have quite a growing number of regular customers who love coming out here for their produce. We also have an open-field policy, so customers are welcome to stroll through the farm and see where it all comes from.” “We haven’t changed our produce prices in five years. Most of our items are about $2 a pound,” Robert says. “We’re probably not going to get rich doing what we are doing, but we love what we are doing.” The McMahons are longtime Floridians. While Shelly is originally from Illinois and moved to Florida as a young child, Robert was born in Fort Myers and so was his mother.

“There has been someone from Robert’s side of the family in Florida dating back to 1896,” Shelly says. “We really love it here, and we are really proud of our farm.” Southern Fresh Farms is open to the public year-round, and they offer regular special events, including food trucks and live music on Fridays, children’s storytime and craft project once a month, $1 movie nights during Christmas break and a Gator Fest in March. They also sell Christmas trees during the holiday season. There are certainly many reasons to take a “road trip” to Southern Fresh Farms this fall.

growing up in Ohio.” When the opportunity to purchase No. 3 Craft Brews presented itself, Nick and his family jumped at the chance. “We took it over—my dad and my brother and I—and it has been fun to get to work together,” he says. “It’s something we’ve always wanted to do.” No. 3 Craft Brews offers a vast array of craft beer options from all over the world. They currently offer more than 170 different beers— and they are running out of space. “I like to find original things that other places don’t have around here. We have a lot of rare finds and one-offs here,” Nick says. “We also go by a lot of customer preference and recommendations. Lots of people who have moved here request things from back home in their home state.” 20

BIG STORM BREWING CO. Big Storm Brewing Company is one of the fastest growing independent craft breweries in Florida. Based in Clearwater, they now own and operate three locations: Clearwater, Odessa and Cape Coral. The Cape location opened in March—in the building that once was home to Cape Coral Brewing Company—and they started brewing small batches of beer a few months later. The brewing team is led by head brewmaster Joel Moore, who has been in the beer industry for more than 14 years. “It started as a college job at a brewery in Omaha, Nebraska,” Joel says. “I was a bartender and bussed tables, but I bugged the head brewer at that brewpub and let him know I wanted to learn about the process. I jumped into it and learned everything I could.” Joel’s training has certainly paid off. Big Storm’s roster of craft beers has received critical acclaim, including 2016’s Best Florida Beer Championship with their Oktoberfest Marzen Lager.

“Down here we are making exclusive, unique batches just for the local taproom,” Joel says. “Eventually we want to make a series of beers with unique yeast strains that are just served here in Cape Coral. It’s really nice that we can do small batches like that here.”

Chef Jerson Prado and his business partner and restaurant manager, Kyle Turner, met while they were working together at Dante’s Coal Fired Pizza. “We really like working together, so we decided to open up our own space,” Jerson says of Taverna Wood Fire Kitchen. “We recently celebrated being open for our first full year,” Kyle says. “It’s been really great.” Taverna’s wood fire grill cooks up a wide variety of dishes, including the popular smoked grilled octopus and rib-eye steak, but Jerson also enjoys making pasta dishes—and they make the pasta themselves. “Seafood and steaks are also really popular,” Kyle says. “We are really known for our meats. We also make all of our sauces in-house. It takes a little longer, but it’s worth it.” “My favorite thing to make is the octopus,” Jerson says. “I had a dream about it even before we opened the restaurant. It might have seemed like a crazy idea, but now it’s one of our most popular dishes. Originally from Sicily near Palermo, Vince Cangialosi came to Cape Coral five years ago. “When I was a kid, I would mess around in the kitchen with my mom and my grandma,” Vince says. “But I really started to take it more seriously when I moved to the States and I was working for very talented chefs. I really have a passion for cooking.” Prior to opening Gusto three years ago, Vince and his wife, Raquel, owned three other restaurants in the area. “They were 7,000-square-foot restaurants, and I didn’t want to do that anymore,” Vince says. “I wanted something smaller and more intimate. With the smaller space, it’s more personal and we can change things a lot easier. Heath says they rely exclusively on Dexter oyster knives, which can be ordered online. At Cape Harbour Oyster Bar, they serve their oysters with cocktail sauce, horseradish, lemon and their own special Champagne mignonette. The menu at Cape Harbour Oyster Bar offers plenty of fresh shellfish, but it also offers a good variety of other dining options from salads to burgers.
