PAYING CASH - VS - A MORTGAGE When a borrower starts looking for a dream home, there are so many things to take into consideration.

WHERE TO PURCHASE? | HOW IS OUR CREDIT SCORE? | WHAT PRICE RANGE TO LOOK? HOW MUCH MONEY ARE WE PUTTING DOWN OR DO WE PAY CASH? Paying cash for a home may seem like the wise choice, and sometimes it may be. However, purchasing a home with cash should not be first on the list of financial priorities. Saving for retirement, building adequate emergency savings and paying off higher interest debt almost always takes precedence.

REASONS TO KEEP CASH The two big reasons to take out a mortgage even if a buyer can afford to pay cash are maintaining liquidity and maximizing returns. Paying all cash, while commendable, isn’t always a good idea if it means committing too much of your saving to an asset that is inherently illiquid. In other words, you don’t want to have to sell your home if an emergency arose. Meanwhile, with rates still low, and mortgage interest deductible, paying cash is the equivalent of locking in an investment that returns roughly 3% to 4% a year. Investors who feel they can earn more than that in the stock and bond market will often choose to obtain a mortgage and keep their cash invested.

REASONS TO PAY CASH There is nothing more satisfying that purchasing an item with cash. Owning something outright with no payments. This goes for purchasing a home as well. Imagine the money that would be saved over the lifetime of the mortgage. In a competitive housing market a cash buyer has the upper hand in bidding wars and possibly a shot a negotiating for a lower price. But wait! This is assuming all higher interest rate debt is paid off, or maxing out on tax-advantaged retirement plans, and making sure there is more than enough money set aside for a rainy day fund. Paying cash isn’t always a bad idea, however a borrower must make sure the doing so doesn’t put the rest of their financial house in jeopardy.

What happened to summer?

blinked my eyes and it's gone! A few trips up north, a few camps for the kids and next thing I know it's September. I don't feel like I got much downtime and quite honestly, I want a do over! The good thing is, in Southwest Florida you are really only five work days away from your next vacation, or shall I say "Staycation". One of the things I looked forward to most when I lived up North, were my vacations to Florida. Now, my family makes every weekend a vacation. There are so many great local places to explore.

While I always encourage our residents to "Keep it in the Cape", sometimes you just gotta cross the bridge and head to FMB or the islands for some sand under your feet. Traditionally, the months of September and October are tough in the travel industry. The kids are back in school and there are no more summer vacationers. You can find some really great deals on local resorts and hotels. Soon the Cape will be buzzing with snowbirds and "in season" hustle. Why not take a long weekend now? In this issue we outline some of the best places to eat, play and stay in Fort Myers and the islands of Sanibel and Captiva. Even though I'm less than 30 minutes away from the Cape, when I go boating, rent bikes on Sanibel or grab ice cream at Love Boat, I'm in "vacation mode". Don't have a boat? We've given you the lowdown on how easy it can be with Destination Boat Club. If the beaches aren't your thing, there is always shopping and a night at the theatre in Downtown Fort Myers. So, consider it stimulating the local economy. Call in sick (your secret is safe with us), pack a bag, and book a long weekend get away! Like the T-shirts in the storefronts say... YOLO! Hundreds of runners participated in the 3rd annual CenturyLink-Prism Freedom 5K event this July. Runners and walkers traveled across the Cape Coral bridge overlooking the scenic Caloosahatchee River. The post-race party began immediately after the race. Kids under twelve enjoyed the Kids Fun Run.

These rotations are completed at Lee Memorial Hospital, HealthPark Medical Center and Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The program began with its inaugural class in July 2014. In December 2016, the residency program was approved for expansion from 18 residents to 24, and received Continued Accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for the next 10 years.

Twelve-year-old and U.S. Kid Golfer, Kevin Kelly, of Cape Coral is a rising junior golfer. Picking up his first club at the age of two, this lefty golfer has played in over 130 tournaments and has won numerous medals and awards, traveling all over Southwest Florida and other states to participate in local, regional, state and world tournaments. any snowbirds, and some permanent residents in our area, want to enjoy the boating experience in the waters of Southwest Florida without assuming the responsibilities and expenses that come with owning a boat. A popular alternative is to become a member of Destination Boat Clubs. Indiana resident, Corey Surrett, and his wife, Chris, spend about six months in Florida at varying times throughout the year. "I used to own a boat" said Surrett. "I've put up with everything that's involved; expenses, storage, insurance, maintenance and cleaning. Joining the Club has made it possible for me to have the boat of my choice anytime I want. Captain Dave gets us in the {fully equipped} boat and we're on our way. At the end of the day, when we get back to the dock, Captain Dave and his staff take over. We just get in the car and leave." Â Surrett's son, Steve, and grandsons, Brixton, Preston and Weston look forward every year to June when school is out and they get to visit "Pappy" and "Nana" in Cape Coral. Nine-year-old Brixton loves it when Pappy makes the boat go fast. "We get big waves. Pappy tries to miss the waves but sometimes we get splashed. One time we were in a storm and we got soaked!" Seven-year-old Preston likes to go shelling. Five-year-old Westin's favorite boat is the pontoon because there's "room to take a nap." Membership in the Club requires a one-time initiation fee, then a monthly fee. After three years, a member has the option of discontinuingÂ participation in the Club or, without paying an additional initiation fee, renewing the membership. "It's worth every penny," said Surrett. Owner, Dirk Werner, takes pride in his fleet, which consists of a variety of late model boats. "We keep the boats in tip top shape and we replace each vessel every three years," said Werner. He and his employees make every effort to 18

Staffer, Brian Zazarro, a recent addition to the "family" at the Tarpon Point Marina location in Cape Coral, emphasized another aspect of safety, "We have a significant law enforcement presence. The Sheriff, Cape Coral Police and Florida Fish and Wildlife launch from here. They keep an eye on things." Club Members' favorite boating activities include visits to Cabbage Key, Cayo Costa State Park, Sanibel, Captiva, Lovers Key, Ft. Myers Beach, Keyway din Island and Little Marco Island. At times, preferably during the middle of the week, members can keep the boat overnight and spend the night camping at one of the waterfront parks, or staying at a beach hotel. A condition for this arrangement is that boats must be secured at a dock, or in a marina. For regular day trips, they can be anchored out, but cannot be beached. Members may reserve a boat at any of the Club's three locations; Cape Coral, Naples and Key West. Bob and Carol Morgan's deep tans testify to their love of cruising our coastal waters. Residents of Ft. Myers, they appreciate being able to procure a boat at either the Cape Coral or Naples venues. "We like to take the family out and find a beach, visit one of the islands, or meet up with friends." Bob expressed complete satisfaction with their Destination Boat Clubs membership, "The service is fantastic. I always know I'm getting a clean, good boat!" Call the kennel, hire the house sitter, create a to-do list… Planning a vacation can be stressful. Erase the stress with a staycation! For some people, the word staycation means taking time off from work and literally staying home. The need for downtime can’t be underestimated, but living in Southwest Florida means we can take the staycation to new levels. People travel from far and wide to frequent our beaches, hotels and restaurants. A gift of living in such an amazingly beautiful city is our proximity to paradise. We cross the bridge! Often vacationers like to discover those hidden gems that the locals love, but try doing the opposite. Do what most locals don’t do on your staycation. Surrendering to those tourist traps can be exhilaratingly fun! Break out of the routine, be spontaneous (but don’t go crazy, this is a staycation after all) while still hitting a few local hangouts. The Point Ybel Light, more commonly known as the Sanibel lighthouse, will take amateur photography to professional levels. It’s difficult to take a bad shot here. The area around the lighthouse is easily accessible and open to the public, but the lighthouse itself is not. Don’t let that stop you though, the grounds are stunning. One of first lighthouses on Florida’s Gulf Coast, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Wander down to the beach and touch the tip of the island. hen we contacted Kimberly Duis to tell her she had won the Cape Coral Lifestyle makeover contest, she was ecstatic! "I've never won anything", she exclaimed. Originally from a town called Benton Harbor, Michigan, she has lived in Cape Coral for seven years. Duis has three adult children and three grandchildren; Karter, Kasen, and Kourtney, all under age five! She also has a cock a poo named Mia. Currently she a homemaker and doting grandma, but was in law enforcement for years before health reason caused her to no longer be able to do the job. Duis describers herself as a blessed Christian woman that loves the Lord. She is a member of the One Hope Church of God. Kim's makeover consisted of complimentary hair and make up by Bruce Todd Salon and an aesthetic treatment by Dr. Terese Taylor. For this dramatic transformation, Bruce Todd chose a copper red color that complimented her skin tone and really made her glow!
