Why do we keep pets?

he relationship between humans and pets can be dated back 2,000 years. In what is now Israel, archeologists uncovered a burial with a puppy in the hand of a human. There is documentation of pets being kept in the Fertile Crescent. Artifacts, artwork and archeological evidence of pets existing in Ancient Egypt are plentiful. Chinese emperor Ling-Ti of the Han Dynasty gave his dogs the rank of senior court officials. Pets were kept in the Middle Ages. Fish, birds, tortoises…all kept throughout recent history too. Our relationship with pets is woven into the thread of our human existence. But why? Why do we keep pets? Unlike offspring who pass along our genes, our pets offer less material returns. What’s in it for us? Our pets are costly. They rack up vet bills and we must feed them. Ok, dogs sometimes work for us in areas like self-protection, therapy, and military defense. But far more often they are just companions, friends and family members. For some us we can’t imagine a home without pets. They enrich our human experience, give us hope, metaphorically support our understandings about life and even connect us to deep spiritual beliefs. Some experts believe that pet-keeping naturally exists in hunter-gather communities and so it must be inbuilt, while others believe it’s our culture that shapes pet ownership. Many believe keeping pets is at the root of our social existence and desire to live and interact with others. Pets get us off the couch, so maybe we keep them for health reasons? It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly why humans keep pets. Like most things in life it’s probably a combination of several factors. Can you imagine a world without pets? I can’t. I mean they are so cute! Pets wake us up in the morning and welcome us home after work. They depend on us, provide company, teach us empathy and touch our hearts. They make us laugh, test our patience and even perplex us at times. Pets profoundly impact our lives. This issue is all about the pets! an antiquated ethos. Those who love their pets really know they aren’t best friends, but more so part of the family. If you fall into that category, then you need to check out Pet Coral. Conveniently located in the center of Cape Coral, this 30,000-square-foot facility is a magnificent place for your pets. Whether it’s daycare, boarding, grooming, or veterinary care, Pet Coral has it all…including a water park with the pool designed in the shape of a huge dog bone. Practice Manager Melanie Thurmer says, ““What separates us is the one-stop shop philosophy. We even have a trainer who works with dogs and staff. She brings a lot of ideas on how to maximize the dogs’ experience here while keeping them all safe.” That trainer works with a staff larger than most doggie daycare businesses offer. A total of 23 members of the team see around 100 dogs wag their way into the building on a daily basis. Thurmer adds, “It’s a group of people that really just love animals and love their jobs. Not everyone can say that.” Pet Coral opened its doggie doors in 2011, and has flourished ever since. It’s not surprising, given the stateof-the-art facility and the commitment of those who work there. Walk through the remarkable lobby to where the pooches get hourly play out back, and you’ll be more than impressed. The ground out there is the same kind of artificial turf that the Dog Whisperer utilizes. It’s very drainfriendly and anti-bacterial. If you’re the owner of a small breed of dog like a Chihuahua or Pomeranian, put your worry aside about them getting trampled on by a Great Dane or Bullmastiff. There are separate areas for the dogs to play, based on size and temperament. Back inside, there are several boarding options, including suites that have TVs. And there is soft music emanating from the hallways, as it comforts the animals, making them feel like they’re at home. And if you’re at home, or anywhere that you can’t see your pet while it’s at Pet Coral, you can go online and view the day on any one of five webcams. The grooming stations are immaculate, and the vet clinic is at the forefront of any center around. Pet Coral boasts laser surgery capabilities, ultrasound machines, and more. Thurmer tells CCL that clients are very loyal. Many have been with Pet Coral since day one and say they would never go anywhere else. And with the unique totality of services provided, it’s easy to understand how the client base grows rapidly due to word of mouth. Not a dog owner? No problem. Pet Coral boards cats, hamsters, birds, lizards, and ferrets. One potential customer actually asked if they could board a possum! If this isn’t enough to let go of the leash and allow a group of dedicated peo-

ple take care of your pet, then here’s a caveat that will surely tempt you to give Pet Coral a test run. You may have taken part in a Happy Hour or two in your day, but what about Yappy Hour? Thurmer explains, “On the second Friday of every month, we do Yappy Hour. It’s a free event for the community to bring their dogs to play in the water park. There's nothing common about JoJo McRodi a Common Marmoset Monkey

hirteen month old JoJo, a Common Marmoset monkey, is loving life in Cape Coral. He takes full advantage of our Florida sunshine by cruis-

ing around the family swimming pool in his miniature pirate ship which is equipped with the basic necessities, including a bowl for his snacks. JoJo's Owners, Barb Smith and Marcelo Parodi, purchased him a year ago from a marmoset breeder, "When he was the size of a yogurt cup," says Barb, who's always had a fascination for monkeys. As a little girl, when she lived in Maryland, her family took trips to the zoo in Washington, D.C., where she'd spend most ofÂ her time in front of the monkey sanctuary. Neither Maryland, nor D.C., allow exotic animals as private pets. Living in Florida has made it possible for Barb to have her beloved JoJo. Experts agree; potential owners should be aware that some pet monkeys can be aggressive, and need a social, free roam environment which is difficult to provide in a private home. Of the twenty one states allowing private individuals to have monkeys as pets, Florida is one of nine states that require permits. Barb was granted a Class III permit. Our state has an extensive application process. Permits come with strict regulations. For instance, it is mandatory to follow a disaster plan and have an evacuation kit ready at all times, so that the monkey can be moved to safety in the event of a natural disaster, such as a hurricane. "We live in JoJo's house. This is JoJo's world," says Barb. Indeed, the little monkey leaps from the top of his cage to the couch, to a chair, stopping along to the way to enjoy one of his favorite foods, fortune cookies. Other favorites include mozzarella sticks and pizza. Occasionally, he shares his food with "Mousey," his toy mouse. JoJo "eats everything," but Barb and Marcelo feed him plenty of healthy foods; fruits, vegetables and Marmoset, a nutritional food made for monkeys like JoJo. He's fond of gum (tree sap)â€Śand worms, purchased from a local pet store. Marcelo feeds the worms to JoJo. Barb chooses not to participate in this activity. JoJo isn't a "performing" monkey, but he attracts lots of attention when he shows up at local venues like one popular coffee shop where he always receives his share of Barb's Vanilla Bean Frappe with chocolate syrup. He's learned a few tricks. He can give you a "high five," and imitates the beep of a microwave and a cell phone. He likes to play "hide and seek." Hiding on Marcelo's back, he challenges Barb to find him. Barb peeks around Marcelo's shoulder and calls, "Where's JoJo?" JoJo scampers to Marcelo's other shoulder so that Barb can't see him. JoJo can be possessive. Sometimes when his "parents" embrace, he gets between them and pushes Marcelo away. He can get away with that. After all, it's his house! DEBT TO INCOME WHEN BUYING A HOME!

When it comes to obtaining financing for purchasing a home, a lender will look at more than if consumers pay their bills on time, having a stable income, and a good credit score. Although, these things will help secure a mortgage loan, if the lender has determined that a particular buyer is living “too close to the edge,” when it comes to the amount of debt they have, and may not be approved until the debt to income ratio is under control. HOW TO FIGURE DEBT-TO-INCOME RATIO There are two types of debt-to-income ratios that lenders will look at when a consumer applies for a mortgage: •

The front-end ratio, also known as the housing ratio, shows what percentage of income would go toward your housing expenses. This is includes a monthly mortgage, real estate taxes, homeowner’s insurance and any association dues.

The back-end ratio will show what portion of income is used to cover all of the monthly debt responsibilities. This includes any credit card bills, car loans, child support, student loans, and any other debt that shows up on a consumer’s credit report that is due a monthly payment obligation, including mortgage payments and other housing expenses. (This doesn’t include items such as utilities, health or auto insurance, cell phone bill, gas, etc.)

In order to calculate the front-end ratio, add the expected housing expenses and divide it by how much is earned each month before taxes, this is the gross monthly income. Multiply the result by 100 and that is the front-end debt to income ratio. To determine the back-end ratio, add up the monthly debt expenses along with any housing expenses and divide the result by the monthly gross income.

RECOMMENDED DEBT-TO-INCOME RATIO Most conventional loans require a debt to income of no more than 45 percent, however, some lenders will accept ratios as high as 50 percent. The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loan recommended debt to income limit is 31 percent on the front ratio and 43 percent on the back ratio. However, with certain compensating factors the percentage can be a little higher.
