Get Outside!

hen first visiting Cape Coral I took pictures of the birds, leaned my face toward the sun every chance I got and biked the southern end of Pine Island. On a February trip, I took an amateur shot of a pelican with its head slightly turned toward the lens as it paddled along the Henley canal. After a long flight and several layers of clouds later, I landed in 19 degrees and ice. Vacation done. Back to the Northeast grind. A few weeks later, I stumbled across that picture of the pelican and uncovered an urgency in the shot. Without a frame, I thumbtacked it to my kitchen windowsill in my 100-year-old apartment building in upstate New York. Now framed in ice and snow that pelican looked at me every time I did the dishes. One blustery day with certainty I told my new friend, “I’m headed to Florida.” In my excitement, I told everyone about this place threaded with canals, dotted with tropical flowers and host to vivid sunsets. Most people shared in my excitement while others were less optimistic. I even heard, “Why would you move there? Florida is where you go to die.” I now remember that remark years later and just laugh because Cape Coral is where I began to LIVE! In this issue, we will inspire readers to Get Outside! and explore our city. Meet Lee County Reefs, an artificial reef program not only giving life to our ecosystem, but our economy by creating the most diverse dive sites the gulf coast offers. It is a great way to work towards financial wealth, freedom, or to just be comfortable in your retirement years. There are a few key steps to take when considering purchasing investment real estate. Are single family homes or multifamily homes the way to go? Neither of them are a bad investment, but when looking at the numbers, a multifamily home will most likely generate more income. Here are a few things to think about:

hen I pulled up and saw the boat named “War Fish,” I was already impressed. The crisp blue vessel displayed a picture of two angry fish wearing armor facing off against each other. It let me know this trip on the water was going to be thrilling. But my day of excitement was simply beginning. Captain Dave Dunlap, the owner of Davey Dee’s Charters, took me on a private fishing expedition for about seven hours. Over the course of the day, he ferried me to several different sites to catch a variety of fish. Along the way, we carried on fantastic conversations. During our talks, he gave me a fascinating history lesson about the waters and islands in the area. He did this because, in part, he’s a history buff. It’s also something he does to differentiate himself from other charter boat captains. I found out that he has an insatiable love for his family first. After that, it’s animals, mixed martial arts, and as you may have guessed, fishing. The former tournament fisherman has parlayed his abilities and success into making sure the guests on his charter boat enjoy the thrill of reeling one in. The Indiana native moved to Florida 14 years ago, 16

and thrives on providing his clients with the charter fishing expedition of a lifetime. He definitely did not disappoint on his credo. I hadn’t been charter fishing in over a dozen years, so it took me some time to get back into the rhythm. Dunlap aided me throughout the day, advising me in an encouraging fashion. He may have even been more pumped up than I was when I landed my first snapper. The real rapture came when I was taken to a small cove where no one else was fishing. There, I reeled in a 27-inch long Redfish. The sucker gave me a heck of a fight, and I nearly lost him. Dunlap and I gave each other a high-five, and the sensation of bringing in a fish of that size and strength provided me a momentary feeling that I was a true angler. When we made it back to the dock, Dunlap cleaned my catches. Then, he took me to a local restaurant where the cooks prepared the fish for us. We ate a very tasty meal and conversed about even more things. When I got home, it hit me—I didn’t just get an extraordinary aquatic journey which won’t soon be forgotten. I gained a new friend, as well.

Imagine you’re scuba diving or snorkeling off the Gulf Coast of Florida, and you look down to see a railroad boxcar. It’s very likely. The Lee County Reef Program has come a long way from the 1980s, when you might’ve seen a refrigerator, a tire, or a stove at the bottom of the waters. Welcome to the team that’s helping both the ecosystem and the economy. The Lee County Reef Program has been working tirelessly for over a quarter century to enhance the wildlife, alleviate fishing pressures, cooperate with the shrimping industry and provide enjoyment of Florida residents and visitors, all at the same time, by installing artificial reefs into the water.

If that sounds like a lot of work-- it is. Copious amounts of effort go into the artificial reefs. Several permits have to be obtained. Endless planning goes into placing artificial reefs into the water. Site selection is critical. The reefs have to be situated on the sand bottoms in the gulf. Materials to perform this action end up on a barge, of which are delivered to a specific, predetermined deployment site. Cranes or divers put them into place, or they may just get pushed off the barge sinking into their new location. It’s a process that’s developed immensely. The aforementioned fridges, stoves, and tires are no longer used for placing artificial reefs into the seas off Southwest Florida. Lee County officials now know what’s better for the environment. Steel and concrete are the primary makeup of what goes into creating a diverse habitat that can be inshore, offshore,

or way out into the much deeper depths of the Gulf of Mexico. And what a habitat it is. You need only a brief glance to witness the reef fish, oysters, clams, and more to appreciate how artificial reefs are giving life new homes. If you’re lucky enough to view the sea creatures, you will be treated to colors so brilliant and varied, they’ll provide a veritable kaleidoscope to your retinas. The economics for Southwest Florida are bountiful as well. Fishing and diving expeditions net the area $60 million annually. And the relative cost of these programs is a drop in the ocean. Lee County government spends approximately $30,000 per year on the reefs. They are predominately funded by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, as well as through grants. Saddlewood Horse Club, 16111 Saddlewood Ln, Cape Coral, not just an oasis for horse enthusiasts and kids, has something for everyone. This member-only Horse club, owned and operated for over 10 years by the Sdrenka family, specializes in group and private riding lessons. Saddlewood offers leasing and boarding services, flatrate birthday parties, and Horse Interaction Day. Saddlewood boasts a lake, covered riding arena, race track, hunter jumper ring, dressage arena, 60-feet round-arena, and various grazing pastures. Christina Sdrenka, Saddlewood’s hardworking and humorous matriarch was born in Hamburg, Germany. Sdrenka’s relationship with horses began at four. Her mother and aunt were both riders, but it was a stable she biked an hour through the woods to that provided a solid foundation in horsemanship. Without extra money, Sdrenka worked mucking stalls, gaining immeasurable knowledge along the way and paving her way to a spot on a competitive cross-country driving team. Working and riding for a variety of different stables in these early years, Sdrenka rubbed elbows with the best riders in the business. Alongside the most distinguished 26

dressage riders the word around, Sdrenka learned the intricacies of the discipline. She continued competing until her husband thought maybe it was time to slow things down and start a family. Slowing down is not Sdrenka’s style, but during a pregnancy she agreed it was time for a change, leaving those competitive reins behind, and spreading her wings to the United States. These days, Sdrenka’s four amazing children, Phil, Ricky, Jenny, and Henry work in the barn. Ricky, a determined trainer and instructor, is developing a client-base of his own. Jenny, Sdrenka’s “mini-me”, and fun-loving Henry are junior instructors and work well with Saddlewood’s youngest riders. The Sdrenka family epitomizes teamwork, dedication, commitment, and love.

BRING THE KIDS

Sdrenka, a Certified Horsemanship Association instructor, trained in Jumping and English and Western riding, meets the diverse needs of her clients. Vacation lesson are available. “We primarily have vacation riders from Europe and Canada, but really from all over the world.” Saddlewood enjoys creating those childhood memories with flat-rate birthday party packages that include riding, grooming, small animal interaction, and the ever-popular- Paint-a-pony. Once a month they host Horse Interaction Day, providing children a chance to interact with the animals, ride ponies and horses, experiencing life on a horse farm. Summer and holiday vacation day-camps are available for kids between the ages of 4-16. All staff are background-checked and well-versed in working with children with diverse backgrounds and various disabilities. Christina explains the mission, “We do more than lessons. It’s not about producing ribbons and champion riders, but developing a love for the animals.” And that is just what you’ll see at Saddlewood Horse Club, children outside in the sunshine, breathing fresh air while loving and caring for animals. Riders build confidence by working through obstacles and attaining goals, developing life-skills that transfers into other aspects of their lives. Even though, Saddlewood has many activities for children, it’s for kids of all ages.

Saddlewood’s oldest rider is 86 years old. Sdrenka remembers, “I had a rider over 80. Grooming the horse was hard for him, but he would brush the tail. It took two of us to lift him on the horse, but he loved to ride. He told me one day he bought a motorcycle. He was great! I don’t even think he told his wife he came.” Sdrenka comments on her adult clients, “We accommodate wives that want something to do while their husband golfs, moms that once rode and now that their children are riding want to get back to it. We have people that just retired, but don’t want to stay in the house all day. I had a client going on cattle drives out west with his son. A great way to help you create goals centered on taking your physical activity outdoors includes setting a step goal and utilizing the Pathway to Discovery. We know the loop is 1.3 miles, but you can keep track of your steps with a fitness tracker of some kind. There are apps available for our phones, as well. Keep a daily log of your steps, and more importantly, track how you feel before, during and after every activity. Awareness can increase your activity level and help you sit less and move more. A lot of people strive for 10,000 steps a day but I like to remind them that not every step is created equal—make your 10,000 steps count for your brain and your body. Combining activity and the beauty of being outside— now that’s what I call a natural brain and body booster!

There is no shortage of ways to enjoy the great outdoors year round, from kayaking, walking, running and of course, biking. As one of the lowest-impact methods of exercise, biking offers a way to not only enjoy the fresh air, but burn calories, build endurance, tone legs and hips and build core muscles.

And biking those miles might be even easier as the city continues to develop. Cape Coral touts itself as a “bicycle friendly community,” and was awarded for its efforts by the League of American Bicyclists. Currently the city offers 90 miles of interconnected bike paths; however, according to Nadreau, they have committed to creating a total of 230 miles within the next 10 years. One Cape Coral resident who looks forward to even more trails is biking enthusiast Amy Johnson. “A friend asked me to join her group in the Tour de Cape, and I loved riding when I was younger, so I got a bike and started practicing long distance rides to prepare,” said Johnson. “The feeling of freedom on that first ride brought back memories of when I was younger.” Nadreau said heart health is also at the top of the list when it comes to benefits of biking. Best of all, biking sometimes just doesn’t “feel like exercise.” “It’s hard for a lot of people to exercise,” Nadreau says. “Once it starts to feel like an obligation, it’s tough to stick with it. But biking sometimes doesn’t seem like exercise. It’s relaxing at the end of the day. For some, it’s nostalgic.
