H
ey Neighbor, Welcome to Cape Coral Lifestyle! We are a community magazine whose mission is to bring the "Good News" of our city to you each month. Last year my family moved to Cape Coral from up North for the palm trees and warm weather. Fast forward a year and we've decided to stay because of its people! I've heard it said many times that our city has a "small town feel" and I couldn't agree more. I'll admit to putting on make up, just to run up the road for a gallon of milk, because I'm sure to see a familiar face. Each month we will be highlighting the awesome residents, charities and businesses that make this city great! Feel free to give us your input. Do you have an amazing story to share? Let us know. Having a fundraiser or charity event? Send us the dates for our monthly calendar. Cape Coral Lifestyle is for you! This magazine is free to our community and completely sponsored by our wonderful business partners. I hope that you will support them by shopping local and "Keep it in the Cape!" Next month you will meet our editor Stephanie Karasek. Stephanie has called Cape Coral home for almost 20 years. She loves to travel, enjoys fine food and wine and loves all things beach. (She's also an insane Green Bay Packers fan.) Stephanie will be bringing you great content about our town each month. We may not have a typical November in SW Florida, with brisk air and crunchy leaves, but Fall is here. I used to have a sign I would hang (that my husband hated) that said "It's Fall Y'all"!!!! I've always loved fall because it's the start of the holiday season. Thanksgiving will be here before you know it. What are you thankful for? I hope this fall your list of blessings is longer than your worries. I'm thankful for the fantastic team we have on board and the opportunity to visit your home each month. Thanks for reading and if you see me around town, introduce yourself! I look forward to running into you all. (I just hope I'm wearing my makeup!)

“Smart” Home on 9/11 at 9:59 am, the exact time of the 2nd World Trade Center Tower collapse. Gary Aubuchon, President, Aubuchon Homes, the custom home division of Aubuchon Team of Companies, partnered with Tunnel2Tower, a New York 9/11 nonprofit organization to build a beautiful fully customized, iPad-operated, “Smart Home”. This would be the home where Corey and Brandy could raise a family and spend the rest of their lives together. On the morning of 9/11, Corey and his wife Brandy, were treated to a motorcade provided by the Cape Coral Police Department, Cape Coral Fire Department and Patriot Guard Riders. The event included Corey and Brandy’s High school choir singing the National Anthem and a presentation of colors by the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. At 9:59am, a huge American flag was removed from the front of the house and Corey and Brandy Kent were handed keys to their new Aubuchon home. "Everything we could have asked for in this home is in there," his wife, Brandy, said. Aubuchon Homes’ design team worked closely with Corey and Brandy throughout the process ensuring they would receive everything they needed and wanted. Aubuchon believes in giving back to the community and supports many local organizations such as Tunnel2Towers Foundation, 12

One Strand At a Time SUZIE MEKLIR TRAULSEN USES TECHNOLOGY TO RESTORE MORE THAN HAIR ARTICLE STEPHANIE KARASEK PHOTOGRAPHY EMMA-LOUISE MULLEN, STEPHANIE KARASEK
T
he Hair Revitalizing Institute offers an FDA approved therapy for hair loss and hair restoration. Low Level Light Laser Therapy (LLLT) is a treatment that uses laser light to stimulate hair follicles resulting in regrowth, increased strength and elasticity. Suzie Meklir Traulsen knows first hand how devastating hair loss can be. 15 years ago, prior to opening the Hair Revitalizing Institute, she lost 80% of her hair due to alopecia. “I’m a very social person, so to have hair loss was embarrassing” “For woman our hair is our femininity, for men, it’s their strength,” remarks Traulsen. At the time Traulsen lived in Michigan. She worked with a top engineer from General Motors and developed a hood that emits cold laser light. It looks similar to a dryer hood in a beauty salon. Traulsen opened her first clinic in Detroit, Michigan in 2009. In May of 2016 she joined the practice of Terese Taylor, M.D. on Del Prado Blvd. in Cape Coral. Androgenetic alopecia is the most common cause of hair loss and affects 50% of males over the age of 40 and 75% of females over the age of 65. In addition, hair loss can result from other causes such as chemotherapy, hormone changes and malnutrition, just to name a few. LLLT treatment sessions consist of sitting under the light device for 60 minutes, 2-3 times a week. The therapy requires no surgery, drugs, or maintenance. It works by applying healing properties to the hair, also known as photobiogenesis. Multiple clinical studies have shown the effectiveness of LLLT in treating hair loss. Traulsen has received two patents for her therapy and has appeared on TV Shows including The View, The Doctors and Dr Oz. Men and woman from all over the world can benefit from LLLT. Traulsen uses Skype for a consultation and is able to provide an at home hood for treatment. The Hair Revitalizing Institute also provides a specialty line of hair care products including shampoos and conditioners, topical serums and styling products as part of the treatment regimen. Crazy for You! CAFE YOU SERVES UP FRESH AND HEALTHY EATS AUSTRALIAN STYLE.
ARTICLE DANA SCIPPO PHOTOGRAPHY TINA OVERBAUGH
W
elcome to Cape Coral’s first Australianstyle café; Café YOU! The name, originally inspired by Marlies’s husband Uri, is now more commonly associated with the idea that, “The café is for you, because you deserve it.” Australian-style cafés are trending in New York City, and now Cape Coral residents have one to call their own. Longing for a sense of community, Marlies Laaper, native Australian, former venture capitalist associate and Cape Coral resident, was inspired to open Café YOU. It is located off the beaten path in an industrial center at 1423 SE 10th 18
Cape Coral Lifestyle | November 2016
Street. Laaper had a simple idea; coffee and food under the same roof. There’s a relaxed atmosphere and from the moment you enter, it whispers, You are special. The décor is understated, comprised mostly of Craig’s list items. Relaxing, unique, trendy but sophisticated, possessing the heart and soul of small business, it appeals not only to millennials, but to the more mature senses too. Your senses really begin to stir when you smell the coffee. No drive-thru, Robusta or flavor shots here, just locally roasted Italian-style Espresso. Laaper
walks a few doors down to buy her beans! For regulars, Brekkie and morning coffee are accompanied with greetings and g’days. Laaper’s vision is coming to fruition, “Already, we’re finding that our customers are getting to know each other.” Café YOU also offers Australian beers and wines. Hours are Mon, Tue, Wed & Sat: 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. and Thu & Fri: 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. with dinner served from 5:30 - 8 p.m. on these days. Although, those with gluten free diets, vegans, and vegetarians frequent Café You because it’s not just a salad, anyone will find the clean colorful menu items irresistible. Australian cuisine is more than Vegemite, although Laaper recommends it lightly spread over buttered toast! The menu is simple, much like the food itself, and very reasonably priced. Less is more is a theme here and fresh local ingredients create quality dishes. However, more than any other dish, locals savor the Avocado Smash, a staple found in many variations throughout Australian-style cafés. Feta and tahini sauce add a salty and savory compliment to the creamy avocado or, avo, if you know the lingo. However, Avo Smash is perhaps best described simply; It’s delicious! You’ll also discover Middle Eastern influences throughout the menu, making the White Bean & Kale Karma and Lentil Soup a must-try. An exquisite 150-year-old Moroccan door, a survivor from a previous antique endeavor, adorns the North wall of Café YOU, inspiring and opening the imagination of diners. Two more antique doors reside in a warehouse waiting for their debut. Two more Café YOU Cape Coral locations are coming soon, not only giving those doors the perfect home, but bringing our community together simply, through coffee, food and the human connections that inherently exist in café culture. Café YOU is for you, because Café YOU, is all about you! Visit CafeYou2.wordpress.com to learn more about this Cape Coral up-and-coming!

Get On The Boat! A Journey On The Key West Express, Because Getting There Is Half The Fun! ARTICLE SCOTT GRAISON PHOTOGRAPHY SHARON WINSLOW
20
Cape Coral Lifestyle | November 2016
W
ith the roar of the engine and the wake behind me, I began my passage to Key West. The sun was ascending on my port side, and with it, a rise in my excitement level. I was aboard the Key West Express, where exhilaration and tranquility share the spotlight. But before we move forward, let’s look back. The vessel began letting passengers aboard in 1997. For nearly two decades, locals and seasonal residents alike have been delighting in all the aspects the Key West Express experience allows. The philosopher Plato said necessity is the mother of invention. And thus the idea of this mode of travel from Southwest Florida to Key West came to fruition. If you were to drive from Fort Myers, where the Key West Express voyage launches, it will take you more than five hours. That’s without any traffic or weather delays. The ride across the water lasts three-and-a-half hours, and it goes by in a blink. Taking the boat will save you hundreds of dollars compared to the cost of a flight to the unique destination. What else makes this method of traveling to Key West extraordinary? It’s what the ship offers that the alternative ways of getting there do not.
You can’t get up and walk around casually and comfortably with room to move on a plane, bus or car. On the Key West Express, you can mill around, mingle and share a drink and a view with fellow passengers. It’s interactive, and strangers become friends. The boat is comprised of three decks with fantastic seating options. They range from couches to barstools to reclining chairs. The lowest deck is completely enclosed and air conditioned. The second floor offers an indoor air conditioned area, as well as outdoor seating which is covered, providing protection from the sun. On the top deck, it’s wide open and presents passengers with a real feel for the speed of the vessel. As if the scenic waters of the Gulf of Mexico weren’t enough to hold my attention, I had access to television, a fully stocked galley, a bar and festive music to keep me company. If they offered foot massages, I might never have gotten off the boat! So there I was, simultaneously relaxed and invigorated, with not a care in the world. The journey was equally as exciting as the destination. I was not alone in my exuberance. One hundred ninety-four others were along for the ride as well. Among my fellow passengers were locals who just wanted to head down
to Key West for a bite, at least two people celebrating birthdays and even a family from Alaska. I thought it was particularly interesting that they were coming from the northernmost region of the country, and they were about to set foot at the southernmost point in the continental U.S. Due to the seasonality of this region, the summer months offer an opportunity for locals and Florida residents to travel without the vessel being at capacity like it often is during the season. From December to April, the number can spike to 450 or more travelers. I had the privilege to visit the wheelhouse, where the captains are stationed to drive the boat. The conversation we had was informative and entertaining. Senior Captain Dave Shinn says, “We typically work pretty long days, but seeing the enjoyment on the faces of the passengers makes it all worthwhile.” The other captain on this day’s voyage was Gordon Young. He relays his thoughts on the work, “You leave your keys in Fort Myers and you get on this boat, and it’s just a good time from the minute you get on. I think it’s a great thing, and I think that’s what people really love most CONTINUED > about the boat.” November 2016 | Cape Coral Lifestyle

And that is what it’s all about. A dedicated group of employees working for the Key West Express have a single goal in mind. They strive to ensure passengers enjoy the entirety of the trip. Miller weighs in, telling me, “All of us at Key West Express consider it our pleasure to host visitors and residents alike as we welcome them aboard our state-of-theart catamarans. Because our cruise to Key West is such a unique experience, it allows us to become part of those special memories that everyone cherishes.” I disembarked, meandered along Duval Street and visited some of the local landmarks; the Hemingway House, the Harry S. Truman Little White House, Sloppy Joe’s and the Key West Cemetery. It was hot and humid and the hurried pace I set took its toll. When my time on land was up, my feet hurt and I was exhausted from taking in as much as I could. I couldn’t wait to get back on the Key West Express to feel the wind in my hair and to breathe in the crisp, refreshing salt air. I got back on, took to a couch and recharged my batteries for the ride back to Fort Myers. I chatted with some other passengers, had a drink, thought about when I would book my next trip and was of course, treated to a magical Gulf of Mexico sunset. The Importance of Lung Cancer Screening WITH THE EXPERT DR. RICHARD PAGLIARA
ARTICLE ERIKA SMILEY | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Y
ou’ve probably heard the saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” It especially rings true when concerning one’s health. The shift in the medical field seems to be focusing on disease prevention as much as treatment and cure. November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month and one of the best things you can do if you are an “at risk” individual, is get an annual screening. What many people don’t know is that Medicare now covers these screenings for those who meet certain criteria. In 2016 the American Cancer Society reported 158,000 deaths from lung cancer. According to the website cancer.org it is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in both men and women. Cigarette smoking is by far the most important risk factor for lung cancer. Smoking causes 80% of lung cancer deaths in the US. So how do you know if you are a candidate to be screened? Low dose CT lung Cancer screenings are fully covered by Medicare and most insurance companies if you...

• Are between the ages of 55 - 77 • Are a current smoker or quit within the past 15 years • Have smoked a pack of cigarettes per day for the past 30 years (or the equivalent amount in less years) • Have an order from your healthcare provider • Carry Medicare or any of the many insurance companies that have adopted this standard." What is the screening procedure like? According to Richard Pagliara, M.D., of Radiology Regional, the Ultrafast Screening of the Lungs is a non invasive, CT scan that can detect abnormalities and lung cancer in its earlier, more curable stages using a new technique called helical low dose CT scanning. The screening is far more accurate in finding lung tumors than a chest x-ray, the traditional diagnostic tool. It can find lung cancers when they are as small as the diameter of a soda straw, as compared with a chest x-ray that finds them when they are about the size of a quarter. You hold your breath for approximately 10-15 seconds while the scan is completed. In summary, lung cancer screening is quick, painless and non invasive. It could also save your life. If you have a history as a smoker, schedule your screening today. Visit RadiologyRegional.com

Locals Helping Locals A LOOK INSIDE THE CAPE CORAL CARING CENTER Julie Ferguson
"W
e didn't even have green beans and corn!" When she first came to the tiny Cape Coral Caring Center in the summer of 2000 as operations manager, Julie Ferguson found empty shelves; a circumstance she says is not unusual for food pantries during summertime. She knew she had to get the community more involved. "However," she recalls, "I didn't know anybody." She started attending Chamber luncheons, joined the leadership program and began meeting with community leaders. Now executive director of the Center, Ferguson has built a network of support. Civic and fraternal organizations, churches, schools, businesses, government agencies, and individuals have come on board her 'little engine that could.' Supporters hold food drives and sponsor events to collect food and money for the Center. Ferguson explains, "It all comes in the door and goes right back out to residents of Cape Coral who have fallen on hard times." Sudden illness, medical bills, job loss, or cessation of the school free lunch program in summertime, can get a family into financial trouble. Last summer, we gave out 1,285 Healthy Not Hungry Kids bagged lunches." "Our clients come to us in emergency situations. For many of them, it's the first time they've asked for help. One client said to me, 'I never thought I'd end up here.' We understand, and treat our clients with kindness and respect. In 2015, the Center distributed 143 tons of food with the help of its supporters, volunteers, and its staff of three ─ Ferguson, Wendy 28

Wootton, Operations Manager and Wanda Carlson, Administrative Assistant. That same year, the Center paid $11,746 in electric bills for families without electricity, handed out 271 clothing vouchers and 32 thirty-one day free bus passes. A client, who used her bus pass to look for a job, later contacted the Center to tell them she'd gotten the job and had recently been promoted to Supervisor. Another client showed up at her workplace and discovered, posted on the door, a sign that read: "Closed for two weeks." Distraught, she had no idea how she was going to pay her bills and feed her children. She turned to the folks at the Center, who helped her through the crisis. At Christmastime, Wootton suggested the Center have a Christmas Santa party. Nick Muhlenbruch and his wife, Val, costumed as Mr. and Mrs. Claus, entertained children inside The First Congregational Church while parents picked up toys at the back door. The party resulted in 132 needy families having presents for their children on Christmas morning. We'll always be a food pantry," says Ferguson. "In the future I'd like to add a facility which focuses on job placement." In addition, she envisions, "A separate place where people who are hungry can come in, sit down with a volunteer, have a meal and just talk with somebody." Businessman, Chris Spiro, expresses the sentiments of supporters, volunteers and staff of the Center: "We will not allow people to go hungry in this community." Family Traditions
Locals Only
LOCAL CAPE FAMILIES SHARE THEIR FAVORITE THANKSGIVING TRADITIONS, PRESENT AND PAST.
H
as your Aunt Millie always made the same jello salad for the past 23 years straight, even though no one ever eats it? As a child I never understood why we ate the same things and did the same things every holiday? It was only as I became an adult and had my own family that I realized these little family traditions were part of what I looked forward to each year. It wouldn't be the same without my mom's homemade "Monkey Bread" or playing board games after dinner. So, we ask the locals, what are your favorite Thanksgiving family traditions?
The Mickeys:
We have lived in Cape Coral for over 15 years. Once we started having kids we realized how important it is to us to have holiday traditions for the kids to remember. We celebrate Thanksgiving at our home with our friends and family. We feel like the more the merrier definitely applies to this holiday. The kids make crafts to decorate the house and table. We always make sure we have a bounce house for the kids to enjoy. There aren't other young children in our family, but the bounce house usually attracts the kids in our neighborhood to join in on the fun.
The Smileys:
Thanksgiving to me is the kick off of the Christmas season! We often travel north for a large family gathering and eat obscene amounts of carbs until we are ready to bust. Then the guys watch football and the ladies leaf through the Black Friday ads to hunt for deals the next day!
The Bergans:
Every Thanksgiving the Bergen family makes butter bread stuffing. The whole family gathers to toast up to 20 loaves of bread! Even the kids get in on the action. All of the toast is cut up and prepared into homemade stuffing. Of course some laughter, conversation and cocktails add extra love to the family dish.
The Karaseks:
Thanksgiving always begins watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade as the feast is prepared. I pride myself in cooking way to much food...leftovers are the best! The day is spent enjoying time with friends and family, a competitive game of cornhole, and of course, football!
The Overbaughs:
Both my husband’s and my families live two hours away, so Thanksgiving is always a road trip, two houses, two turkey dinners and a lot of fun! The kids love spending quality time with their cousins while the girls sneak away to kick off the holiday season with Black Friday shopping. November 2016 | Cape Coral Lifestyle
