Explore ... Before You Miss It! April is traditionally the month when our Canton community puts away our cold-weather gear in exchange for garden tools and/or jogging shorts. But as I write this letter on March 1, the outside temperature is already at 67° and last week, it was a whopping 72°! Most of the local winter was uncharacteristically mild. Will that continue this month? If so, should we expect March showers to bring April flowers? It’s probably safe for me to predict that the iconic cherry blossoms in Washington D.C. will have bloomed early this year! I suggest taking advantage of any great weather to explore some of the beautiful nature trails in the area. You can stay close to home in Stark County or head north to the extensive Cuyahoga Valley National Park system. Just get out early to appreciate the botanical diversity of Ohio’s spring wildflowers. Speaking of flowers, Bryan Rice at Rice’s Landscapes Redefined shares some excellent spring maintenance tips for your outdoor living space. Spring is also a good time for a maintenance check of your HVAC system. Kirk Fry, one of the experts at RT Hampton Plumbing & Heating provides useful advice in the same story on page 12. Chorus for a Cause Hosts Spring Concerts Come out and support a local charity while enjoying beautiful music! A Chorus for a Cause will be donating a portion of the proceeds from their April Concerts to Compassion Delivered, a group that delivers meals to those coping with chronic, life-threatening illnesses. The concerts will take place on April 15 at Zion United Church of Christ and on April 23 at First United Methodist Church, both starting at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:00 p.m.

Stark County Home & Garden Show Has a New Venue The 72nd Annual Stark County Home & Garden Show, presented by the BIA of Stark & East Central Ohio, is the largest indoor home show in the region, featuring more than 100 area vendors, demonstrations and beautiful landscape displays. This year the show will take place on April 21 and 22 at the brand-new Pro Football Hall of Fame Village Center for Performance. Admission is $5 for adults. Children 12 and under are free. Annual Easter Egg Hunt in North Canton The North Canton Easter Egg Hunt presented by North Canton Jaycees and Keller Williams Legacy Group Realty will be held Saturday, April 8 from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Hoover High School softball fields. Expert Tips for Maintaining Your Home Inside and Out Scheduling Preventative Maintenance Can Ensure Your Home is Ready for the Spring and Summer Season

A homeowner’s worst nightmare is waking up to freezing cold temperatures on the coldest days of winter and realizing the furnace is not working. However, the inconvenience and repair cost are often preventable during those untimely interruptions. Scheduling preventative maintenance can save money in the long run and keep you warm. “We push preventative maintenance because it is a must,” says Kirk Fry, HVAC manager at RT Hampton Plumbing & Heating, located in Massillon. “Many people let maintenance go and end up with flooded basements, clogged furnaces and algae caused by moisture. There is a lot you can do to save the day in many situations.” Industry professionals recommend spring and fall as the best times to have home appliances on the inside and grounds outside

checked and prepared for spring. Servicing central air-conditioning units in the spring is important because they are known to take in dust from mulch, which can cause damage to motors and compressors. Spring is also an ideal time to check drains, sump pumps, hot water tanks, water softeners and HVAC units. “The situation with sump pumps is that you don’t want to wait until your basement is filled with water to check. They should be serviced two to three times a year. Whether checking an HVAC or a humidifier, any time water is sitting around it can create algae. During maintenance checks, we will often go out and put a chlorinated pill in the drain, and that kills algae and makes it wash through,” says Kirk. This is also a good time to put a reminder on the calendar for a fall check up on the

furnace when temperatures begin to drop. A dirty furnace filter can be the culprit for damaged fans, motors and overheated bearings. Simply changing the filter every three months can remove dust and allergens and allow air flow. Beyond this, experts can clean the unit and coils as well as check electrical components, amps and make sure everything is operating correctly inside during routine service. As spring ushers in showers, outdoor maintenance is equally important. Advanced planning will help avoid expenses including plant replacement as well as damage caused by more complex issues like lingering water around foundations that can cause drainage concerns. Routine maintenance also improves a yard’s appearance which impacts curb appeal and property values. Landscape experts not only maintain well-kept lawns, carefully tend to plants and remove yard debris, but they can identify issues that may lead to pest intrusions and soil erosion. According to Bryan Rice of Rice’s Landscapes Redefined, frequent trimming and pruning are necessary to keep greenery in peak shape and applying fertilizer will stimulate growth. Plants that are not maintained are more susceptible to drought, infestation and loss of nutrients. He says mulch is extremely important around plants and shrubs and saves water because it helps maintain moisture and improve soil health.

RICE’S TIPS FOR A WELL-MAINTAINED LAWN • Prune. Landscape professionals can identify plants, trees and bushes that should be pruned. • Aerate soil. Aeration increases infiltration of water into the ground, improves water flow to the plant’s root zone, and reduces water runoff. • Prevent weeds. Weeds can grow, become invasive and cause issues with insects and pests. “A well-maintained outdoor living space provides a comfortable, beautiful place for family and friends to relax and enjoy. Having a yard that is properly cared for offers a sense of pride and people often experience less stress,” Bryan says. As inflation continues to wreak havoc on the daily cost of living, the most vulnerable often find themselves living paycheck-to-paycheck and sometimes forced to choose between paying an electric bill or buying food. Nearly 53,000 Canton residents are food insecure, and over 15,000 are children. Many circumstances lead people to the food line, including generational poverty, a major medical expense, car repair or job loss. “More than half of the folks we are serving are under the age of 18, and we see a lot of senior citizens,” explains Raven Gayheart, public relations and communications manager at the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. “Most times seniors are trying to live on a fixed income. In many situations, social impacts have forced grandparents to take care of their grandchildren. Others may have lost a job and never needed to ask for help before and have found themselves in a food line.” The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank needs your help to feed the community. The Foodbank’s 32nd Annual Harvest for Hunger Campaign is now underway. The goal for the campaign is to provide the equivalent of 4.54 million meals, including $1.12 million

and 100,000 pounds of food. All proceeds from the campaign go directly to providing food for the local community, distributed through the Foodbank’s network of nearly 600 food pantries, hot meal sites, shelters, children and senior citizen programs and other hunger-relief programs. The campaign is led by co-chairs Bernett L. Williams, chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer; vice president for community initiatives at Akron Children’s Hospital, and Mark Sterling, CEO of Beaver Constructors. “The campaign continues to be successful because of the faithful support of community organizations and businesses like yours,” said Bernett. “It always amazes me to see so many community partners come together to rally behind one common cause – feeding people and fighting hunger.” The Harvest for Hunger Campaign is the Foodbank’s largest fundraising campaign and helps support food distribution all year long. In addition to raising needed funds and food items for the Foodbank’s eight-county service area, the campaign hopes to educate the community on the tough choices people struggling with hunger are often forced to make, like choosing between groceries and other basic necessities. “Many government benefit programs sprang into action when the pandemic hit. After the initial rush of people losing jobs and needing help, we started to see the need taper off, but then when inflation shook families and damaged their ability to budget, we started to see an increase in need again,” Raven says. Dan Flowers, president and CEO of the Foodbank, recently released the organization’s new strategic 3-year plan, highlighting five focus areas in which the Foodbank hopes to deepen its impact. It includes Neighbors, the people seeking help with groceries; Communities, the community partners committed to hunger relief in its eight-county service area; Investors, those who donate food, money or time to the organization; Foodbankers, its staff; and the Foodbank, the entity as an organization. “We engaged in countless conversations with families receiving food, hunger-relief partners, volunteers, donors, community leaders to collaboratively develop a new strategic plan that moves us closer to our vision of a thriving community free of hunger,” says Dan. The Harvest for Hunger Campaign is a collaborative partnership between the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, Greater Cleveland Food Bank, Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley and the Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio and focuses on fighting hunger across 21 counties in Northeast Ohio. Tri-County Restaurant Association Celebrity Cuisine The 31st annual Tri-County Restaurant Association Celebrity Cuisine, presented by Atlantic Food Distributors, will be held Tuesday, April 18 at the Canton Memorial Civic Center from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Food enthusiasts from all over Northeast Ohio will delight in a feast of local flavors, including unlimited access to appetizers, entrée samples, beer, wine and desserts.
