In the season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings that enrich our lives. The essence of Thanksgiving isn't just about a festive table or the aroma of pumpkin pie; it lies in expressing heartfelt gratitude and cherishing moments spent with our loved ones. The holiday reminds us to give back with intention and purpose. As November's fourth Thursday beckons, where do you envision your Thanksgiving gathering? While I pen this letter in early October, my own family's plans remain in the air. Over the years, we've made traditions of rotating hosting duties, preparing a mostly traditional dinner, setting up cozy viewing spots for the big game, and indulging in games that spark laughter, sometimes uncontrollably by Aunt Pam and Grandma Sue! If you're hosting this year (like maybe I will be), find the ideal wine to complement your splendid feast on page 24. Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to the residents and businesses of our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make Canton and Stark County the vibrant community that it is. A special note of appreciation to our advertising partners: your contributions allow this magazine to land on doorsteps month after month, sharing inspiring tales and uplifting news from around our neighborhoods. As the holidays approach and we gather with our dear ones, in the genuine spirit of Thanksgiving, let us reserve moments to contemplate the true essence of life and take stock of our blessings.

Custom Craftsmanship in The Woodlands Rea Custom Homes Showcases Luxurious Livable Spaces During This Year’s Stark County Parade of Homes. ARTICLE BY KRISTEN HAMPSHIRE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DOUG SNYDER PHOTOGRAPHY Every detail was considered in designing Rea Custom Homes’ award-winning Southridge plan, which was recognized for Best Craftsmanship and Best Family Room at the 2023 Stark County Parade of Homes in Hartville’s The Woodlands development. Jeff Rea is one of seven builders who constructed residences for the single-site parade. In doing so, the president of the second-generation family-owned business focuses intently on quality, detail and artisan features that personalize a home.

“Overall, the appeal of the floor plan is the design and flow, combined with materials and finishes, leading to a feeling of elegance and openness while still maintaining separate rooms,” Jeff says. Rea Custom Homes was founded in 1969, and Jeff began working at the company in 1991 after graduating with a bachelor's degree in business administration. “It’s a family affair,” he says. Jeff brings creativity, practicality and deep industry knowledge to an organized homebuilding process that is centered on delivering a truly custom experience. CONTINUED >

"Building a new home is the coordination of thousands of parts and pieces, as well as constant client communication to understand their vision and bring it to life as we build the home. I feel we excel on the execution of bringing together all of the details. It’s about the experience, expertise and pride of workmanship." “Building a new home is the coordination of thousands of parts and pieces, as well as constant client communication to understand their vision and bring it to life as we build the home,” Jeff says. “I feel we excel on the execution of bringing together all of the details. It’s about the experience, expertise and pride of workmanship.” Rea Custom Homes partners with Melanie Wanchick of Textures Design, who walks clients through the selections process. “We always start with the kitchen, the heart of the home,” Jeff says. “Then, she works with clients to choose floor coverings, paint colors, light fixtures, exterior materials — every detail.” Ready to tour the Rea Custom Homes project in The Woodlands? Here’s a look inside. Living is easy. This home’s functional floor plan considers “the who,” and how a potential buyer would live in the home. “I always start with the buyer in mind and think of how folks will use the house,” Jeff says, noting that this flexible layout could suit a family or empty nesters with adult children, which was the main target. The 2,748-square-foot, two-story house features a main floor primary suite and spa bath, two sizeable upstairs bedrooms with an ample, full bath, a 3.5 car garage with a rear entry for easy access to the backyard and a first-floor office and powder room. An unfinished basement is remodel-ready. Outdoors, a covered patio is situated off of the bright dinette with windows on three sides. “The windows are in all the right places,” Jeff says of positioning them so natural light floods into the home. For instance,

transom windows in the family room welcome sunlight into the space. An eye for craftsmanship detail. Every surface and material in The Southridge plan was selected to deliver a sophisticated, luxurious feel. The family room includes rich, wood ceiling beam detail. An elegant fireplace extends 13 feet up to the cathedral ceiling. It is conveniently gas-powered, and finished with limestone plaster and a substantial wood mantel. Situated against a feature wall painted in Sherwin Williams’ Iron Ore, the limestone hearth against slate walls adds a crisp contrast and is a focal point, visible from the adjacent kitchen-dining space. Premium cabinets from Bolon’s Custom Kitchens in the Shiloh style are a select, warm poplar with a gray undertone and concealed hinges for a clean look. Champagne bronze hardware complement faucets by Delta in the same metal. “The icing on the cake in the kitchen are white stainless-steel appliances with a copper metal finish on the handles,” says Jeff of the GE Cafe line. Another upscale feature that factors in easy living — a double-drawer dishwasher that gives homeowners the flexibility of running just the top or bottom. “That way, you can do smaller loads if there are just two people living in the house most of the time, but there is capacity for entertaining or guests,” Jeff explains. A walk-in pantry loaded with cabinet storage includes a countertop and floating shelves above, along with electrical for a coffee maker or mixer. Again, Jeff was considering the potential owner’s lifestyle. “Our thinking was that a buyer can walk in with groceries and set their bags on the counter, put food away and have a dedicated space without cluttering the kitchen,” he says. Look up. Several ceilings throughout the home are painted in Iron Ore, creating a sense of continuity and flow. This same paint color is repeated on the base of the kitchen island, and the front door, both inside and out. Oak-toned luxury vinyl plank in the main living areas creates a sense of warmth. Combining these color schemes results in a “classy high-end feel,” Jeff says, reiterating a few remarks overhead during the Parade of Homes. A perfect retreat. The first-floor primary suite is a true getaway with a resort-style bathroom featuring a zero-entry shower. It includes a 6-foot-tall recessed niche with shelving for ample storage and a roomy bench seat. White tile with gold veining offers a clean finish against the pewter-colored vanity. Shiplap detail adds interest to the wall. “We chose a tankless hot water heater to decrease operating costs, and it offers in-demand hot water,” Jeff explains.

14

O PE N H OU SE | HOM E + DE S I GN

Opportunities on the lower level. Nine-foot ceilings provide a lot of head room in the basement. Steel support beams are situated to open up a generous space, roughly 22 square feet in size, which could be finished into a recreation room. “We engineered the beams so they are extra heavy duty, and there are no posts,” Jeff says, relating that fewer obstructions open up more remodeling options. The lower level includes a three-quarter bath with a fiberglass shower, sink, toilet and linen closet. “The buyer is planning to finish off the area with floor coverings, and we will build an exercise room,” Jeff says. Overall, he says, “The house appeals to a high-end buyer, and it showcases some new, different products.” To learn more about Rea Custom Homes and its unique capabilities, call 330.806.6122 or visit ReaCustomHomes.com.

Winterize Your Outdoor Water Features Aquatic Gardens of Ohio Offers Expertise in Guiding Plant and Fish Selection and Maintenance. ARTICLE BY KRISTEN HAMPSHIRE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

The peaceful babbling of a waterfall cascading into a petite pond adds a getaway feel to an outdoor living space. At Aquatic Gardens of Ohio on South Main Street in North Canton, inside and out, you’ll find everything pond — plants, fish, supplies and deep knowledge by Brad Larson, owner and an enthusiast and expert. He grew up in the business, working alongside his father, Robert Larson, at his business — North Canton Pet Center. When his dad transitioned into selling pond supplies and fish under the name Lily Blooms, he grew the business to about 25 employees and was mailing water plants across the country. In 2014, Robert sold Lily Blooms to Brad’s brother, Brett, and Aquatic Gardens of Ohio was born out of the Main Street location. Brad, who runs the store, has a passion for pond life. His senior year at GlenOak High School, he created a website to sell aquatic plants online. With only a couple other pond-focused stores in Ohio, Aquatic Gardens is a gem and destination for those who are interested in creating and maintaining a unique pond environment. At Aquatic Gardens, raised beds are filled with pondwater and an expansive variety of plants — floating and submerged. Lilies are available in seven colors, and Brad also offers bog plants for the pond perimeter: rushes, reeds, cattails and irises. “We go through a lot of fish every year,” Brad adds, noting that goldfish grow 8 to 12 inches and are best suited for shallow ponds no deeper than 18 inches. Koi are much larger, 24 to 36 inches, and require a pond that is at least 3 feet deep. Aquatic Gardens is known for its decorative fish — koi with violet, green, yellow, red, orange and blue coloring. “There is also a wide range of colors and scale types,” Brad points out. Goldfish and koi are bottom feeders and need to “learn” to swim their way to a pond’s surface to eat. Brad sells sinking pellets for introducing new fish to

the pond. “Once they get into the habit of feeding, they will come to where you are when feeding and expect the food.” Customers can find everything they need to feed their fish in the store, along with supplies for pond cleaning, spring startup and winterization. Heading into winter, Brad offers helpful tips for preparing your pond for hibernation. Prepare for leaf drop and winter debris. Any breathable netting will do, and covering your pond as the leaves fall will prevent a messy cleanup in the spring. Leaves that sink to the pond floor “turn into sludge,” Brad says. Adjust feeding. Koi and goldfish recognize temperature drops and shift into hibernation mode, so their metabolism slows. If you continue feeding at the warm-weather rate, they will not properly digest food and can get sick. “Once the temperatures drop below 55 degrees, you should not feed them because they go dormant — they are not active,” Brad explains. Yes, they are still living. And, they will “wake up” in spring. There is no need to move fish indoors as long as you equip your pond with a deicer. Add a deicer. A deicer is essentially a pond heater that prevents water from freezing over. “If the pond freezes over, the gases can’t exchange and the fish will not survive,” Brad says. Deicers work by floating on the water’s surface to maintain an ice-free area that allows harmful gases to exit and healthy oxygen to enter the pond. Aerate the pond. An aeration system circulates water and infuses it with much-needed oxygen. Aeration can be accomplished in a couple of ways. A waterfall stirs the water, and movement is what it ultimately needs to prevent it from going stagnant. But in winter, you should shut off the waterfall pump. An air pump will push air into the water during winter, and this is also crucial mid-summer when the temperatures heat up, Brad says.

When it comes to winterizing external pumps and filters, those that are submerged do not have to be removed. The key is for the equipment to be deep enough so it will not freeze. If you’re operating external equipment — such as a pump in a shed or a pressure filter that is outside of the pond — then you should remove, clean and store them. CONTINUED >

"We even get people who travel from out of state to see us."

Prune pond plants. Consider pruning and cutting back plants before the cold sets in. “Cut back tall plants that emerge out of the pond above the water level because their stems are hollow, and trimming them under the water can rot out the tuber,” Brad explains. “With lilies, you can prune the pads. Otherwise, we recommend a spring cleaning to

Loss Inspires a Loving Nonprofit Taylor Prelac watched her 8-week-old baby’s heartbeat on the ultrasound monitor. Hopeful, full of dreams of what parenthood would be like for her and Jackson High School sweetheart, Tyler, the midwife assured them that despite measuring two weeks behind in development, the strong heartbeat was a healthy sign. Eight days later, Taylor was at her parents’ house cleaning up after dinner and she began to bleed.

“We were going to find out the gender within the next week,” says Taylor, relating that they had not settled on names. Taylor was rushed to the ER, but once inside, she had to bear the loss alone. It was April 2020, during the height of the pandemic. “I was scared and not being able to hold someone’s hand was an awful feeling,” she says. “The ERs were so busy and doctors didn’t really have the time to sit down and talk with you about losing a child. It was just like, ‘Your baby is not viable. Follow up with your OBGYN in 24 to 48 hours.’”

She and Tyler returned home to Perry Township. “That was the most physical and emotional pain I’ve been through in my life,” Taylor says, adding that she spent the night and next morning in the basement, curled up, not picking up a single call or text. “It was so difficult to talk about it.” After the miscarriage, Taylor underwent a dilation and curettage (D&C) to remove any fetal tissue. After surgery, her grandmother sent her flowers and a teddy bear. “I clung on to that bear, held it when I cried,” she says. “It was something nice to have and hold with its weighted paws. It felt like it was giving me a hug and it helped me grieve in the way that I needed to.” On the April 9 anniversary of losing her first child, Taylor decided to donate 10 of the same 16-inch Giving Bears by Demdaco to Summa Akron City Hospital, where she suffered her loss. She wrapped pink and blue ribbons around each bear’s neck and wrote messages on heart-shaped notes. “Dear friend, you are not alone. My heart aches for any woman who has lost her baby. A part of my grieving and honoring my heavenly child is giving this teddy bear to you. Please hold onto it when you need some comforting. Your baby will always be with you.” The tearful phone calls from nurses and mothers who sent emails thanking her for understanding their grief triggered an idea that is now Brooks’ Bereavement Bears, a nonprofit that partners with hospitals in Ohio to comfort women after a devastating pregnancy loss. During the last few years, Brooks’ Bereavement Bears has distributed more than 400 bears, many with unique messages that Taylor writes herself. The nonprofit consists of a grassroots, dedicated board of eight who get together with the Prelacs during evenings and weekends to prepare every bear.

“I love to see how it affects patients firsthand and that rewarding feeling, like you are helping someone grieve and not just sending them out the door,” she says.

I WANTED SOMETHING TO HOLD Taylor personally understands that being handed a death certificate or dealing-with-loss brochure is not the type of TLC that moves parents who are experiencing loss. “There are other types of bereavement gifts out there, but this is a personalized, heartfelt note and bear you can hug,” Taylor says. “I didn’t want a number for counseling services. Yes, that helps, but in the moment, I wanted something to hold.” After the response from Taylor’s initial batch of 10 bears, her wheels started turning. “I could really do this,” she relates. Taylor has always worked in the nonprofit sector, previously at Akron Children’s Hospital Foundation and now at United Way of Stark County as manager of corporate engagement. “This is what I do best, and I love it,” she says. “My fundraising experience helped me have the confidence to reach out to corporate organizations for donations,” she adds, noting that her nonprofit survives on those contributions. When Taylor reaches out to hospitals, they tell her they’ve never experienced an initiative like Brooks’ Bereavement Bears. “I would love for all of the hospitals in Ohio to have these bears, and to reach many more women,” she says.

TAYLOR AND TYLER'S RAINBOW BABY Brooks’ Bereavement Bears is named after the couple's second child. Taylor learned she was pregnant a couple of months after her loss. The night she and Tyler read the “positive” result on the pregnancy test, they went out to dinner. They exited the restaurant to a full rainbow.

“A baby born after a miscarriage is called a ‘rainbow baby,’ and I thought, ‘This is a sign.’ I clung on to that," she says. Brooks was born on April 5, 2021, a healthy boy. Brooks’ Bereavement Bears ramped up once he turned 1-year-old and Taylor was gradually exiting the new-mom fog. Since then, the nonprofit has been gaining momentum.

a festive pairing The age-old question, “What wine goes with turkey?” is answered. ARTICLE BY MARY ABEL

24

C HE F ’S SE LE CT ION | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

It’s a question heard every year about this time: “What are the best wines to serve with Thanksgiving dinner?” “In my early days in the wine business, the answer was pretty cut and dried because it was all based on the assumption that you had a turkey that came out of the oven that was dry, and so you’re almost guaranteed to need something with a little bit of sweetness to it to help balance that out,” James Lewis says. James is a sommelier who has been in the wine business for more than 26 years. “I’d recommend a sweet or off-dry Riesling or Gewürztraminer. Something that will help with that dry meat that you’re about to choke down.” But now, with all the ways people are preparing the big bird, he says that conversation has become a lot more interesting and fun. “People are frying turkeys, which come out really moist and delicious. They’re smoking turkeys and they’re doing them on the grill,” James says. “Now, when I’m asked that question, I always ask how the turkey is going to be cooked because any given preparation is going to call for something a little bit different. “If you’re deep frying it, it’s going to come out very moist with a fair bit of fat, so you need something that’s going to cut through that. So you can go with a dry white, you can do a dry Riesling, or you could try a French Chardonnay, which typically doesn’t have that big, rich mouthfeel that California Chardonnay would have. It’s crisper and cleaner with high acidity.” For those who prefer red wines, James says that a fried or smoked turkey can handle something a bit bolder and full-bodied. “Try something like a Pinot Noir. It’s not at all heavyhanded. When I’m talking about red wines, and

I talk about heavy-handed or big—Cabernet is big and full-bodied. I call it the linebacker of the wine world. Then you’ve got Pinot Noir, which is more about balance and elegance. So, if Cabernet is a linebacker, Pinot Noir would be the ballerina. They’re both athletes, but with different approaches to athletics, so they have different approaches to your palate. Cabernet is big, dry, and highly tannic, so you might serve a Cabernet or Malbec if you’re having a steak for Thanksgiving, but you wouldn’t want to do that with a turkey. “With a turkey,” James continues, “you want something that’s going to have a little more acidity, less tannins, and medium body; not that big mouth-filling richness. You can do a Beaujolais or an old-world Italian Sangiovese, which tends to be a very food-friendly wine.” Somewhere in between might be a soft, flirty rosé. And rosé wine seems to be having a moment. “Rosé was always thought of as a summer wine, but people are now drinking it year-round. It’s an excellent choice to go with turkey.” What about bubbles? “I almost hesitate to answer that because it’s kind of the easy answer. You can drink Champagne or sparkling with anything because of that really bright acidity. Especially if you have a fried bird, a Prosecco or sparkling wine is going to cut right through that fattiness and balance it out really nicely.” If you’re hosting a tableful of friends and family this year, James says it’s easy to bring together a collection of wines that will please the crowd. “If you do one bottle of sparkling, whether it’s white or rosé, a bottle of dry white, a bottle of rosé, and a bottle of medium-bodied red, you’ve got something to cover just about anybody’s preference.”

What if I’m serving ham this year? “Lots of people have ham for Thanksgiving, right? It’s very traditional to pair ham and Pinot. But again, you can get creative. You can do a Grenache, you can do a Beaujolais…really, any of those medium-bodied reds will be delicious.”

What about dessert? “If you’re having pumpkin pie for dessert, I would go with something like a tawny port. The spiciness of the pie combined with that kind of nuttiness and caramel notes of a tawny port? Lovely. And it would work with an apple pie as well.”

How much should I spend on a bottle of wine? “That’s kind of an impossible question to answer because wine is so incredibly subjective. That said, I’m a firm believer that there is an absolute ocean of delicious wine in that $15–$25 retail price point. If you go to your wine shop and tell them you’re looking for a nice off-dry Riesling for around $20, they should be able to find you something that’ll work really well. There’s no reason to break the bank.” James Lewis is a sommelier who has been in the wine business for more than 26 years, and he and his wife, Nancie own Crush Wine Bar in Castle Rock Colorado.

Gather Set t ing th e Fa l l Tabl e

The Traditional Table Whether you’re hosting Thanksgiving or an autumn dinner party, setting a festive table creates the perfect cozy atmosphere. Improvise and use what you have around the house for adding elements to the table.

For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display.

The Fall Garden Party Table Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top of a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky.

Rustic yet elegant, this tablescape combines the love of traditional, vintage and natural elements with an updated twist. The Spode Woodland Collection transferware designs are rooted in proper hunting tradition. The fawn table runner mimicking deer spots brings an earthy, yet elevated foundation as the base for this table setting. Coordinating fawn napkins wrapped with twine and topped with natural feathers creates a whimsical touch. The stunning centerpiece starts with a vintage silver water pitcher that is then filled with fresh, sweet arrowwood Viburnums leaves. To complete the look, pair crystal glasses with vintage crystal stemware.
