Kids & Pets: A Tale of Bonded Pairs Canton-area families certainly love their kids and their pets! We take great enjoyment and a sense of reward in watching them grow, managing their potty training and teaching them fun tricks. The same goes for our pets, too. (Insert winky emoji here!) Seriously, one quick comparison between my daughters and my dogs is how close they are to each other. Peyton and Cooper were a “bonded pair” having spent all 13 years of their lives together before Cooper passed in April. They had the same interests in toys, would lie next to each other inside and outside, and even watch out for each other in ways I didn’t know dogs could. Peyton would round him up for dinner, come back to the door for him if she found something worth barking at outside, and would even step between Cooper and a larger dog if she thought he was threatened. My daughters, Lauren (24) and Allyson (19) are five years apart and as they have gotten older, their bond has grown. It is comforting to know Lauren will call Allyson to check in and Allyson will call Lauren for advice on things she has already been through. They make arrangements to visit together in Chicago and look forward to spending holidays playing games and telling stories from their youth. It wasn’t always that way, so if you have your own children that don’t get along as well as you’d like, there is still time for them to grow into their own bonded pair. August is a time for back-to-school shopping. JACKSON CROSS COUNTRY AND DAVID YMCA JOIN FORCES TO MAKE RUNNING FUN

Club

For 15 years, a popular kids’ running club has offered training drills and running practice with an emphasis on fun. What started as an idea between then employee of the Paul & Carol David YMCA, Pam Leddon, and Jackson High School Head Cross Country Coach, Kevin Walsh, the running club has seen more than 1,000 participants on local township fields. Coach Walsh’s goal was to start a youth program that would foster interest in running, showcasing it as a sport. Not without coincidence, it has become a feeder program for the high school team he has led as head coach since 1997. The YMCA’s goal was to promote a healthy lifestyle for kids in the community. It’s safe to say both goals have been accomplished. Coach Walsh says the format of each running club practice has remained the same over the years. A quick warm-up is followed by fun stretching, games built around running and often a relay race.

“We’re trying to teach the basics, like good form,” says Coach Walsh. For the last three years, the program has been led by Coach Lauri Reed. A former high school sprinter herself, she is joined in the program by Coach Marty Clement. Marty is a former Jackson HS cross country alumnus, Class of 2000, currently training for a 100mile endurance run. About four years ago, Coach Marty moved back to the area from Chicago. “My first call after deciding to return was to Coach Walsh asking how I could get involved in the program,” says Marty. There are four different running club sessions each year — winter, spring, summer and fall. Coach Lauri says her “goal is to get the kids fast and have fun running.” She often summons “Farmer Walsh” for a game of Sleeping Cow, Running Cow. It’s a stop-and-go, Simon Says-style game that has kids running, stopping and of course, laughing. Joining the coaches each week are a half dozen or so volunteer helpers from the high school cross country and track teams. Happy to share their knowledge and love for the sport, they also receive credit for the volunteer hours required for such clubs as National Honor Society, JAGS, Student Council and Key Club. “It’s been rewarding to see the kids start as young as 4 or 5 years old, run competitively through middle school and high school, and give back to the program along the way,” says Coach Walsh. He’s also proud of the fact that they recently had a former runner bring their own child to the running club where she got her own start. This year’s 4-week summer session had about 15 runners, ages 4 to 14, from Jackson and the surrounding areas. Some sessions will have up to 50 participants. The fall session will begin in early September and continue for six to seven weeks, culminating in a costumed “candy run.” “That day is one of the kids’ favorites,” says Coach Walsh. He explained it was originally the high school volunteers who had the idea to dress in costume. “One year we had the world’s largest pumpkin at the event, so it’s a pretty big deal!” For more information on the Jackson Kids Running Club and to register for the upcoming fall session, visit JacksonCrossCountry.com or YMCAStark.org.

No matter which of these you’re feeling, back-to-school shopping is made easier (and more fun!) when you shop at Plato’s Closet and Once Upon a Child (OUAC). Both located on Dressler Road in the Thursday’s Plaza, these locally owned franchise stores buy and sell gently used clothing, shoes and accessories. The stores offer cash on the spot for items they can purchase from customers, then price and display those items out on the meticulously organized and colorized sales floors. It makes for an ever-changing selection of top name brands at up to 70% off regular retail prices.

“We may be selective because we want you to be happy when you’re shopping at our stores,” says Barb Minney Schweier, President of The Minney Group, which owns the two stores. “It’s unlike consignment because we pay up front and shoppers can find great things at a fraction of the prices at big box retailers or the mall.” Plato’s Closet caters to teens 13-18 and college students to young adults. It stocks popular brands like American Eagle, Nike, Pink, Vans, Champion, Gymshark, H&M, Sperry, UGG, Converse, Hollister, lululemon and Under Armour. Two doors down, OUAC is geared toward children newborn to youth size 20, and also offers baby gear like cribs, strollers, highchairs and swings plus toys, games, books and more.

At Plato’s Closet, our male model, Zack, picked out a whole outfit for just $26: PacSun Jeans for $16 and an American Eagle hoodie for $10. Liz found an American Eagle dress for just $12, and an entire second outfit for $34, including American Eagle corduroy pants ($12), a Universal Threads belt ($6), a Wild Fable white top ($8) and an Aeropostale striped shirt ($8). You just can’t beat those prices, especially for those brands. Our youngest models, Josiah and Natalyia snagged some great deals at OUAC, too. Would you believe Josiah’s Abercrombie & Fitch jeans, T-shirt and plaid flannel cost just $18? Natalyia did even better with her $14 Justice ensemble of denim, a T-shirt, and plaid button down. Barb says the back-to-school season is one of the busiest times of the year. “At our stores, you can find all the brands you love for great prices all under one roof,” Barb emphasizes. “And when you’re ready to part with gently used pieces in trending styles, sell them to us to get cash on the spot.” For anyone looking to sell to either store, the process is really simple. When you clean out your closet, make sure items are freshly laundered and neatly folded in a basket or tote. Bring everything to Plato’s Closet or OUAC for the store team to review – they look at style, condition and safety (particularly for baby items) – and get paid cash for items they accept. Call to check on their buy counter hours before you go in to sell. “It’s a quick and easy way to recycle a family’s recently outgrown children’s items,” says Barb. “And on the shopping side, you save for being eco-friendly.” Speaking of saving, Ohio’s tax-free weekend is Friday through Sunday, August 5-7. It means when you shop at these stores that weekend, you don’t have to pay tax and your back-to-school budget goes even further. The Minney Group, which also owns the neighboring Clothes Mentor and the Plato’s Closet in Cuyahoga Falls, celebrated the 25th anniversary of opening OUAC last September. The group was founded in 1996 by Barb’s parents, Bob and Melany Minney. The McKinley High School sweethearts passed on day-to-day operations to Barb and her sister-in-law, Kim Cotyk, a decade ago.

HOMEMADE DOGGIE TREATS EASY-TO-MAKE NATURAL GOODIES YOUR DOGS WILL LOVE

When it comes to our own meals and snacks, we all know that nothing beats homemade. Did you ever stop to think that it could be true for your dogs, too? Here are two very easy-to-make recipes made from common ingredients you may already have in your pantry. These treats are chock-full of pumpkin, which is a great source of fiber and helps with digestive regularity. I recently made both recipes for my border collie and Australian shepherd and suffice it to say, they went bonkers for them! I made two different sizes of each, the smaller size

for my 3-month-old puppy. Be sure to serve the No-Bake Peanut Butter Balls in moderation, as raw oatmeal can be difficult for dogs to digest. Please consult with your veterinarian if you have concerns about your pet's health.

Peanut Butter Dog Treats

INGREDIENTS • 2/3 cup pumpkin puree • 1/4 cup peanut butter • 2 eggs • 2 1/2 cups flour (whole wheat preferred) DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line baking sheet with parchment paper. In a bowl, mix all ingredients except flour well. Gradually add the flour until the dough isn't sticky. 2. Roll dough into a ball. Lightly flour your surface and lightly knead. Use a rolling pin to roll dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Use cookie cutters for desired shapes and place dough on baking sheet. 3. Bake for 20-25 minutes until edges are golden brown. Let cool completely.

No-Bake Peanut Butter Balls INGREDIENTS • 1 cup pumpkin puree • 1/4 cup peanut butter • 1/4 cup milk • 3 cups oatmeal

DIRECTIONS 1. In a mixing bowl with a paddle attachment, mix pumpkin puree, peanut butter and milk on medium for 1 minute. Gradually add 2 1/2 cups oatmeal at low speed until incorporated. 2. Use a small scoop or spoon to roll the mixture into 1 ¼ to 1 ½-inch balls, smaller for smaller dogs. Dredge balls into remaining 1/2 cup oats to lightly coat. 3. Place into a closed container and refrigerate until firm, about 1 hour.
