The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we are likely to experience a smell, taste or holiday activity that magically transports us to a long-lost tradition of our youth. It should come as no surprise that food elicits those great memories for me. Holiday snacking on rich and buttery caramels brings back memories of my mother managing the details of this particular cooking process like a NASA engineer. She didn’t rush, slowly stirring the mixture of butter, Karo syrup, sugar and vanilla while adding condensed milk at perfect intervals. Mom kept a watchful eye on her calibrated candy thermometer, pointing out the need to keep a constant boil or else risk the batch curdling. If ever a mistake were made and the caramels were even the slightest bit dark or chewy, she would unapologetically toss the imperfections and start over. After the long cooking process came the cooling, cutting and wrapping, where us kids were called to help. Hundreds of individually wrapped candies felt like thousands. And when we finished this tedious task, we moved on to dipping homemade peanut butter fudge balls into melted chocolate. There were no “food hacks” to save time. Just my great-grandmother’s handwritten recipe that said, “stir constantly for 90 minutes.” This month, we do have some great food hacks for holiday hosting that will save you time in your kitchen. We’ve also compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier and has the added benefit of supporting our local businesses. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy and love. Spread that holiday cheer, Canton!

Holiday Food Hacks MAKE HOLIDAY ENTERTAINING EASY WITH THESE STYLING FOOD HACKS THAT LOOK IMPRESSIVE BUT ARE SIMPLE TO CREATE.

If you don’t have time to bake a dessert but want to serve something that doesn’t look store bought, simply top it with berries, herbs, a sauce or a holiday prop to give it a little something extra. We made a trip to our local grocer and purchased most of these items, and after some simple assembling and minimal baking, we were able to create a beautiful, eye-catching holiday spread.

NEW YORK CHEESECAKE This inexpensive, store-bought cheesecake definitely needed a little something to make it look festive. Candied pecans (we made ours from scratch but they can be purchased), fresh berries and mint sprigs added color, dimension and interest.

HOLIDAY CHARCUTERIE BOARD Why not create a unique holiday charcuterie board in the shape of a Christmas tree or snowman? It looks impressive and was a quick assembly. For this look, a few trimmed evergreen clippings from the backyard served as a great edging for the board. APPLE TART This apple tart was already really pretty right out of the box, however adding a few toppers made it look like it was made from scratch. Sliced pears, fresh herbs, berries and drizzled caramel added color add a homemade touch to this delicious treat.

NAKED CAKE A cake mix, a simple buttercream frosting and a gingerbread house kit is all it took to create this adorable 3-layered naked cake. After preparing the cake layers, simply ice

the cake in a thin layer to give an opaque look that reveals some of the cake underneath. This cake was topped with a gingerbread house and coconut flakes to resemble snow.

DOUBLE CHOCOLATE CAKE If you don’t have time to bake a cake but want your store-bought cake to look special, add berries and a holiday topper to give it that special flair. Fresh raspberries adorn the top of this cake, and to add cascading fresh berries down the side, toothpicks can be used to hold them in place. Not only is it simple and quick to do, but it turns into the perfect entertaining table centerpiece.

GOURMET HOT CHOCOLATE If serving a warm beverage for guests to enjoy, consider hot chocolate with burnt sugar-rimmed mugs. If creating a hot chocolate bar, provide whipped cream and marshmallow toppings as well as added flavorings such as caramel, peppermint, or make it a boozy hot chocolate with whiskey, Bailey’s or Peppermint Schnapps.

A CARING AND FAITHFUL LEGACY FRIENDS AND FAMILY OF BJ MURPHY HONOR HIS LEGACY WITH A SCHOLARSHIP FUND MANAGED BY STARK COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

From an early age, Robert James “BJ” Murphy was a community champion. The Stark County native graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1997 and earned a bachelor’s degree from Kenyon College and a Juris Doctorate from Case Western Reserve University. During a time when he could have pursued his legal career anywhere, he chose to return to Stark County.

“Stark County is the kind of place that really opens the doors to young people in this community and provides an opportunity for young professionals to get actively engaged,” Murphy previously told The Canton Repository. While serving as an attorney for Black, McCuskey, Souers & Arbaugh, Murphy spent most of his free time giving back to the community he loved. He was a founding member of ystark!, an initiative of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce to engage young professionals, and the first chair of ystark!’s Twenty under 40!, an annual awards program recognizing young Stark County leaders who have demonstrated dynamic leadership and social responsibility. Murphy also served as president of the Central Catholic Alumni Association, chair of the Pike Township Zoning Commission, parishioner of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church and board member of the Stark County and Ohio Bar Associations, among other community involvements. He was a graduate of Leadership Stark County’s 21st Class and named to ystark!’s Twenty under 40! in 2010. He was also known for throwing an annual pig roast and bringing people from all backgrounds together to celebrate life and love. “I have fond memories of attending his annual pig roast and of seeing the fun buzz around it every year,” said friend Aimee Belden. “He somehow blended family, old friends, new friends and growing children into a raucous good time!”

The unwavering strength, character and faith that many admired about Murphy is also how he faced his courageous battle with cancer. “Shortly after his diagnosis, I met BJ for lunch at Bender’s,” recalled friend Maureen Ater. “We shared our typical family updates and chatted about community stuff. It all seemed so normal until I asked him about the cancer. I started to sob in the middle of the busy restaurant, but he was so calm and reassuring that this was God’s plan. His faith was so strong.” After Murphy passed away in 2019 at the age of 40, his friends were inspired to continue his legacy in Stark County. “When someone dies so young, I think that friends and family are often left with a sense that things are not done or complete. It all seemed so unfair that such a kind and generous individual would leave us so soon,” said Ater. “Several of us who had volunteered alongside BJ felt compelled to do something after his passing that would help close that circle and bring some resolution to what felt like such a heartbreaking situation.”

Belden and Ater brought people together to discuss how to ensure BJ’s compassionate heart and care for his community lived on. Within a few weeks, they secured support and established the Robert James (B.J.) Murphy Scholarship Fund at Stark Community Foundation. To pay tribute to his love of learning and support of Catholic education, the fund provides scholarship support for students who demonstrate financial need at St. Michael’s Elementary School. “This fund is a small way that we can keep his name and memory alive in the broader regional community as well as in the faith-based community, both of which were so important to him,” said Belden. Ater shared “BJ’s legacy is living on every day through his wife Rachel and their four beautiful boys. For those friends and colleagues who helped to develop this fund, it’s a way to heal and it’s a way to keep BJ’s memory alive for generations to come. It seems like such a small effort to make in honor of someone who left such a big impression on all our lives.” Donations to the fund can be made at StarkCF.org/give-murphy.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
