A Season of Thankfulness In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. That got me thinking about the blessings I appreciate but too often let go unrecognized. This month’s cover image was inspired by one of those instances. At the change of every season, my house is magically transformed with holiday décor, floral arrangements and festive knickknacks. I say “magically” because, for as much as I pay attention, the work could have been done by elves. Actually, it’s one of many thankless tasks performed by my wonderful wife as her gift to our family. We have spice-scented candles, pumpkins and pinecones on tabletops, shelves and counters almost everywhere I look. It puts me in the mood of the season without me realizing that I am transplanted there. Sweetie, the kids and I appreciate the work you do, even if we don’t say it enough. AULTMAN’S TIMKEN FAMILY CANCER CENTER OPENS

A NEW HOME FOR HEALING Approximately 1,700 newly diagnosed cancer cases are treated at Aultman Hospital every year and another 4,000 patients will continue follow-up cancer treatment and monitoring. With the opening of the Timken Family Cancer Center (TFCC) this fall, the face of cancer care changed for the community. Cancer centers of this kind are commonly found in metropolitan areas and located on university campuses, and now this same exceptional healthcare is available for cancer patients locally. Planning for the TFCC began a decade ago, and the dream was realized after several years of preparation and construction. The 45,000-square-foot building is a $28 million endeavor funded by community support. The Aultman Women’s Board kicked off the effort with a $5 million donation in 2012. Since then, the Timken Family Foundation, along with many other donors, brought the initiative to life, including a $10 million capital project contribution from Aultman. The Aultman project team sought input from various community groups during the planning phase. A patient advisory committee consisting of current and former patients along with family members offered ideas for optimizing the patient experience, including suggestions for color schemes, furniture, artwork and natural lighting. Nurses and physicians presented feedback based on

scenarios that would achieve the ideal flow of services, design of patient care areas and overall building layout. “It has truly been a community effort. Patients were moved to tears when they realized we listened to them and put their ideas in place in the new center,” explains Tina Biasella, vice president of Aultman Cancer Services. “Our medical teams would have mock drills to make sure we could accommodate patient needs and emergencies, and provide the best care within the planned space.” One of the goals for the TFCC was to create a serene atmosphere that lends to a calming experience. Patients can see their healthcare providers and grab a snack or smoothie from the Freshens Café while receiving infusion treatments in a variety of different infusion suites, most of which overlook beautiful garden spaces, all with family members by their sides. Other cancer services that were formerly located across the Aultman campus are now located in one building, creating ease of access for patients. A full-service lab, which provides lab draws and analysis, along with infusion services and a full mixing pharmacy is now easily accessible and close to patients. Patients can also meet with nurse navigators, dietitians and social workers within the facility and have access to a patient education and resource center. CONTINUED >

“We’ve carved out a large area in the cancer center for a patient education and resource center where patients are able to come in and have access to the internet. It’s kind of like a library feel with educational materials. Someone is available to help patients find information on their condition, nutrition or services offered, support groups or even just be able to use the computer and Wi-Fi. We are hoping patients will take advantage of this,” says Sareena Singh, M.D., an oncologist with Aultman Gynecologic Oncology. While the patient experience is a central focus, the healthcare team leads the effort. The new center delivers healthcare treatment and services more efficiently, and physicians have an optimum setting for collaboration. Medical oncology physicians, palliative care physician teams and gynecologic oncology providers are now centrally located in a common corridor. This allows physicians to talk more readily and determine patient treatment plans. Space is also allocated for other physician specialties to rotate through

the center including surgeons, cardio-oncology and interventional oncology experts. “Multidisciplinary approach is the key to cancer care. The concept is to have as many physicians available as close as we can,” says Raza Khan, M.D., an oncologist with Aultman Hematology & Oncology. A committee comprised of cancer specialists meets regularly, and doctors from various specialties collaborate, review patient cases and discuss plans of treatment for optimum care. Other specialists often present scenarios in real time with the oncology team. “Our duty is to advance science without compromising the standard of care. Bringing doctors under one roof naturally builds a sense of camaraderie among physicians,” explains Sabrina Shilad, M.D., medical director of Aultman Cancer and Breast Programs. Not only does November mark the beginning of the season of giving, but it is also Veterans Awareness Month — a time to honor and celebrate those who have served our country. But for one local organization, every month is about honoring and celebrating our veterans. Serving Area Military and Veterans, located in Massillon, was founded in March 2015 to assist local active service members, veterans and widows through several key programs like their Veterans' Resource Fair, commissary, Thanksgiving and Christmas feasts, yoga classes and Veterans Run. Most recently, SAM held its annual Veterans' Resource Fair. Like all of SAM's programs, the fair was completely run by volunteers that donated their time to serve those who served us. The Veterans' Resource Fair was a 2-day event that took place at the MAPS Air Museum and featured countless volunteers from the community that offered discussions are PTSD awareness, VA healthcare enrollment, VA home loans, pension benefits and caregiver assistance. SAM's commissary program is specifically supported by the organization's SAM Center — a facility that is provided by the American Legion Post 221 on a free lease and is located at 413 Lincoln Way E., Massillon. On every first and third Friday of the month, SAM opens the center's commissary with non-perishable food items, meat, personal hygiene items, cleaning supplies, paper products and baby/toddler necessities. Three-day emergency food kits and warming bags with gloves, hats, blankets, hand-warmers and tea are also available at the commissary. The SAM Center also hosts the organization's applied suicide intervention skills training (ASIST) for anyone in the greater Northeast Ohio community. Through the program, individuals learn from expert trainers about how to prevent potential veteran suicides within the community and beyond. CONTINUED >

In addition to the programs above, SAM publishes a quarterly newsletter called Serving Those Who Served. The free online and print publication is dedicated to sharing resources with veterans and the greater community, as well as highlighting local stories. The Fall 2022 issue of Serving Those Who Served featured a story about veteran Ron Zaleski, who served in the Marine Corps during the era of Vietnam. He was featured for his completely barefoot hike on the Appalachian Trail — that's over 2,200 miles without shoes! On his journey, Ron learned self-forgiveness, empathy, and found a purpose greater than himself. Sign up to receive Serving Those Who Served in your mailbox, learn about how you can contribute, or read the current issue, by visiting ServingAreaMilitary.org and clicking the "Serving Those Who Served" button in the top left. When it comes to volunteering or donating to SAM, there are many ways to get involved. To volunteer, prospective individuals can begin by filling out a volunteer application form. From there, they can volunteer with SAM's many amazing programs — from the commissary to the annual Veterans' Resource Fair. There are also multiple ways to donate to SAM. While cash donations are always much appreciated, SAM also accepts non-perishable food items, hygiene products and paper products. The Christmas tree is the centerpiece of our homes during the holiday season. Real or artificial is a family debate that we won’t attempt to answer here. Either one can be decorated beautifully. So pick your theme with a central look that will tie all the decorations together. Then, follow these easy directions to make your tree look like it was trimmed by a professional. CONTINUED >

STEP 1: Choose a 7 1/2-foot to 9-foot quality artificial tree with at least 1000 lights. For a classic winter wonderland vibe, try the snow-dusted look of flocked branches. (Option: go for a natural tree instead.)

STEP 2: Add cluster bulb garland, tucked between the branches, to fill in any empty spaces.

•

STEP 3: Place large Christmas sprays of your choice on branches around the complete tree.

•

STEP 4: Add large poinsettias in a color theme of your choice, evenly spaced around the tree.

•

STEP 5: For accent, tuck large glitter stars inside of branches. (optional)

•

STEP 6: Hang large-scale bulbs, approximately 6 inches in diameter, around the tree.

STEP 7: Continue with various shapes of 3-inch bulbs around the tree.

STEP 8: Tuck glitter branches into the tree, evenly spacing.

STEP 9: For a tree topper, try making your own to match your theme. For example, use a pair of reindeer or decorative masks.

STEP 10: Enhance the topper with glitter fern and branches coming down the tree at least 12 inches. For the best effect, make this section extremely full.

• Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. Wine Pairing

According to Savor & Swirl, wine pairing doesn’t need to be overly complicated for a casual outdoor dinner party. Have a lighter and fuller body style of white and red available with some sparkling thrown in. “Lighter to medium-bodied wines from Rhône Valley, Italy or California would be a good place to start,” they state. “Viognier is one of our favorite wines that goes great with fall-inspired cuisines. Pinot Noir wine goes great with just about any food. Lean towards California or Willamette Valley for a new-world style and go with France for a more earthy, old-world style. A big bold Napa Cab would fall in perfectly for the grilled ribeye steak! Cheers!”
