LIFESTYLE LETTER
Hello friends, This month, we focus on design and style. Colors, textures, lighting, shapes, function and fabrics. These are all means of self-expression. And that's what style is all about. Finding a means to tell our personal story, share our journey with the world. Our home is full of art from talented family and friends, reminding me of special relationships and meaningful moments. Our shelves and ledges are lined with more than 40 antique gumball and vending machines that my husband has collected over the years. One, usually found at the edge of a bar distributed a single cigarette for a penny. Remember those? Another napkin holder also provided a fortune for a coin. The oldest was made in 1902, a penny for a gumball. He started collecting machines as a teen, following his mom, an interior designer, to antique malls and estate sales. I love the collection. They are colorful, interesting to look at and remind me of my husband's playful side. What do you collect? Send me a note; I'd love to know more! Enjoy this issue and stay in touch.

Bringing Style Home Pro tips on interior design from Allie Hauser We express our personal style every day, with what we pull from our closet and how we present ourselves to the world. If pressed, we could probably silo ourselves into a fashion category: timeless classics, urban expressive, boho or romantic. We take the time and effort (and expense) to choose clothes that help us feel our best and perhaps hint at our nature. Allie Hauser, owner of The Designery Atlanta, has opinions on style, though her medium is not fashion, but interior design. Allie loves that a significant part of her day is focused on helping customers find their style. It’s her pleasure to then express that through design choices, whether it’s a new build or renovation.
We caught up with Allie in her sunny showroom to talk fall trends and beautiful spaces.
Q: YOU DESIGN KITCHENS, BATHROOMS AND CLOSETS AROUND METRO-ATLANTA. HOW DO YOU CAPTURE THE ESSENCE OF A CLIENT’S PERSONAL STYLE AND TRANSLATE THAT TO YOUR INTERIOR DESIGN?
A: Start with an overall viewing of their home; how is it currently decorated, style and lifestyle. What they like about it and what they would like to change. Define their aesthetic

and functional goals. What colors and materials they prefer. Ask if they have collected any images or their own mood board for inspiration; a picture is worth a thousand words. Translate what they have shared into actual colors, material selections and overall design layout.
Q: WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING FOR FALL: PRODUCTS, MATERIALS AND COLORS?
A: Following seasonal trends for kitchen or bath renovations is not recommended unless that is the color palette you want to live with year-round; accessories can introduce color and alter the vibe. Nature-inspired autumnal colors in countertop items, botanicals, wall art and even towels that reflect the season are an easy and inexpensive way to accomplish this. Current trends are leaning into classic contemporary style with nature-inspired colors and natural wood tones on cabinets. Tiles that are or appear to be handmade, minimal hardware in warm metal finishes and natural stone counters all contribute to a layered and visually interesting look.
Q: FOR A KITCHEN OR BATHROOM WITH A TON OF LIGHT, WHAT DESIGN OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU EXPLORE?
A: A kitchen or bath with a lot of light does give you more options. You can lean into it with lighter elements; go with either shiny or matte surface finishes as well as light colors. Using deeper colors and wood tones to create a moodier vibe can also work since the ample CONTINUED > natural light will help avoid it becoming a cave-like space.

Q: FOR A SMALL CLOSET, WHAT ARE A FEW HACKS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF THE SPACE?
A: A well-planned-out small closet can often store significantly more than a larger, poorly organized one. Here are a few rules of thumb to consider: • Prioritize double hanging wherever possible. One long hanging section does not maximize space; it instead creates unused valuable space in a small closet. One long hanging section used for the longest garments in the closet is sufficient. • When possible, I like to build from the floor to the ceiling, utilizing every inch of buildable space in the closet. Store seasonal items on the highest shelves.
• Do not go overboard on drawers. Drawers are useful for items that cannot sit nicely on shelves. All other items can be neatly stored on adjustable shelving. Seeing what you own is key to a well-organized space. Adjustable shelving helps maximize space as your needs evolve. • Customize the closet to YOUR needs based on your belongings. INSPIRATION: ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS
Marble

Home transformation through thoughtful planning rather than dramatic structural changes. The famous Danby Marble Quarry in Vermont’s Dorset Mountain has been producing breathtaking marble for more than 100 years. It was the first marble quarry in the United States, and it’s the largest underground marble quarry in the world, producing quintessential white slabs, dancing with black veins. The marble’s bold veining is the inspiration for the palette of a Chastain Park home kitchen design. “We treated the stone almost like a piece of art by carefully selecting and positioning the slabs so the most beautiful movement was highlighted,” says Jessica Flake, Senior Architect and Lead Designer for Copper Sky Design + Remodel. “The curved shape of the plaster hood was designed to echo those natural lines in the marble, while the soft texture and warm tone of the plaster help balance the contrast of the space.” The clients were looking for a classic, neutral kitchen that felt both current and timeless. A lot of the inspiration imagery that resonated with them featured a layered combination of deep woods and not quite white tones that were warm and inviting. “We really started to lean into the higher contrast palette when we selected the Danby marble slabs. Once we settled on that stone, it became clear that the best way to enhance and highlight its beauty was to turn up the contrast with the rest of the finishes.” The Copper Sky team adjusted the wood island and accent color to be a shade or two darker and introduced black light fixtures to complement the deep charcoal tones in the stone. The custom hutch design changed from a wood finish to a painted off-black finish with a wood accent. “Those elements were then

balanced with warm bronze finishes, slightly different off-white paint shades on the walls and cabinets, and a creamy textured plaster hood. Infusing and enhancing the variations in color and depth from the stone into the rest of the palette allowed for this high-contrast space to never feel harsh or overwhelming,” explains Jessica. The homeowners wanted their home to feel more sophisticated and better aligned with the way they live. While the home offered plenty of square footage, the design felt dated and didn’t fully support their needs. The goal was to create a more refined and functional home while enhancing the way the spaces connected and flowed together. The renovation included much of the first floor, including the kitchen, butler’s pantry, primary suite, backyard grill station and conversion of extra storage space in the garage to a pool bath for easy access from the backyard. “Through thoughtful reconfiguration, updated finishes and a stronger connection between the interior and exterior spaces, we were able to create a home that feels elevated, comfortable and tailored to the homeowners’ lifestyle,” says Jessica. One of the team’s most rewarding revelations during the renovation was that many of the biggest transformations came from thoughtful planning rather than dramatic structural changes. By rethinking how each space functioned, they were able to better support the homeowners’ lifestyle. Strategic changes, like replacing the corner pantry with a beverage station, removing

an outdated built-in desk and improving connections between rooms and the outdoors, completely changed how the home feels and functions. The project also highlights the importance of cohesion. “Rather than treating each space as its own design statement, we intentionally carried materials, finishes and architectural details throughout the home,” notes Jessica. “From the kitchen to the butler’s pantry, primary suite and screened porch, every element was designed to feel intentional and harmonious.” Copper Sky Design + Remodel is an award-winning full-service design-build firm located in Atlanta. STYLE THE PREP KITCHEN HAS PLAYFUL PINK CABINETRY PAIRED WITH AUTHENTIC TERRAZZO FLOORING IN EARTHY TONES; IT'S JOYFUL AND UNEXPECTED.
Danielle Maslan Interiors is a full-service interior design firm serving metro Atlanta. Danielle brings a hands-on, collaborative approach to every renovation and furnishing project, designing homes that feel warm, luxurious and personal to each individual client. When you met with the family, what were their goals for the design? This was a large-scale renovation for a young family in Dunwoody. They came to me wanting the home to finally feel like them: more color, more personality, more pattern. The bones were there, but the spaces didn’t reflect who they were at all. Beyond the aesthetic refresh, they

had some very specific functional goals: better flow between the kitchen and screened-in porch, a dedicated prep kitchen with added storage, a mudroom and a primary bathroom that felt like a retreat. It was a full transformation, inside and out. What are a few of your favorite design elements of this project? The color and pattern work throughout is what I’m most proud of. On the porch, we worked with deep sage and olive greens that feel lush and tie into the beautiful wooded backyard. The prep kitchen has playful pink cabinetry paired with authentic terrazzo flooring in earthy tones; it’s joyful and unexpected. The primary bathroom has deep green-gray cabinetry anchored by the most beautiful floral wallpaper. The lighting was also a real focus: oversized globe pendants and wall sconces on the porch, and polished nickel and glass vanity lights in the bath that catch the light off the tile in the best way.
LAYERED TEXTURE, SOFT CURVES AND AUTHENTIC MATERIALS: I COME BACK TO THESE ON EVERY SINGLE PROJECT. TEXTURE IS WHAT GIVES A ROOM DEPTH. What are three “get the look” items or design elements you can recommend to our readers? Layered texture, soft curves and authentic materials: I come back to these on every single project. Texture is what gives a room depth. I always mix textiles, leather, natural wood and metal so the eye has somewhere interesting to travel. Soft curves, whether in a piece of furniture or a custom architectural detail, bring a sense of ease and calm that a room full of hard lines just can’t achieve. Lastly, natural materials are non-negotiable for me. There’s no substitute for authentic stone, solid brass, handcrafted tile or natural fiber textiles. You can always tell the difference, and so can your clients. DanielleMaslanInteriors.com Valarda Residential Contractors were instrumental. Valarda.com S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . FROM SPEC TO Spectacular When a Brookhaven family purchased a spec home, they had a hard time visualizing the interior as their own. They wanted to move beyond its builder-grade origins and create an environment that felt custom, layered and highly personal. Another important challenge was thoughtfully incorporating furnishings and décor the family already owned while introducing new pieces that elevated the overall design. Also, an unfinished basement was ripe for design, but the family did not want cookie-cutter finishings. When they partnered with Iris & Oak Interiors, not only did the project take off, but a long-lasting friendship was struck between the homeowners and designers. Michelle Button is Senior Designer at Iris & Oak Interiors and says designing a home is an incredibly
personal experience. “Over the course of this project, the homeowner became much more than a client. We built a friendship rooted in trust, collaboration and a shared appreciation for thoughtful design.” By carefully sourcing distinctive materials, furnishings, lighting and one-of-a-kind design elements, Michelle and her team infused the clients’ aesthetic into every space. The result is a home that feels elevated, collected over time and unmistakably theirs. Swapping the original light fixtures for elevated, statement-making pieces immediately established a more refined aesthetic throughout the home. The custom cabinetry modifications, like replacing select solid cabinet fronts with brass metal mesh inserts, added texture,

depth and a bespoke feel. “The carefully curated artwork was another favorite, as each piece was intentionally selected to reflect the family’s personality and create meaningful moments throughout the home,” says Michelle. Finally, the custom upholstery and oneof-a-kind pillows brought everything together, adding layers of comfort, color and individuality that make the spaces feel warm, collected and special. The designers were intentional about avoiding spaces that looked like everyone else’s and helped the family invest in pieces that reflected their own personality rather than current trends. Together, they carefully sourced unique furnishings, vintage finds, custom pieces and meaningful accessories over time. “By focusing on thoughtful curation instead of instant gratification, we were able to elevate the home into one that feels collected, timeless and personal,” says Michelle. Downstairs in the unfinished basement, Iris & Oak had the opportunity to create a space that felt unlike the rest of the home—a true destination for gathering and entertaining. The clients wanted something dramatic, elevated and unlike a typical finished basement,
“OVER THE COURSE OF THIS PROJECT, THE HOMEOWNER BECAME MUCH MORE THAN A CLIENT. WE BUILT A FRIENDSHIP ROOTED IN TRUST, COLLABORATION AND A SHARED APPRECIATION FOR THOUGHTFUL DESIGN.” so designers leaned into rich materials, striking architectural details and thoughtfully selected furnishings to create an environment that is equal parts sophisticated, inviting and designed for making memories. Michelle is known for creating timeless, inviting homes that balance refined style with everyday functionality. She enjoys working with a diverse range of clients, connecting with different personalities, lifestyles and perspectives. Her collaborative approach and attention to detail result in thoughtfully curated spaces that feel elevated yet personal, reflecting the unique stories of those who live in them. “As their life evolves, I look forward to being a trusted design resource for years to come,” says Michelle. “For all of us at Iris & Oak, those lasting relationships are one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.” S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Buckhead Founder Sketches Next Chapter
Beyond the Boutique
From ready-to-wear to ready-to-tell, fashion designer Ashley Nicole Wallace reflects on the true price of creativity — and how quiet strategy shapes the future of modern lifestyle. After a decade of styling Buckhead’s most discerning from her eponymous flagship, House of Wallace, and launching a celebrated teen line, the 2020 Buckhead Business Association Entrepreneur of the Year winner is helping other brands find their voice through storytelling.
28
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L I FE + CU LT U RE
Q: AS HOUSE OF WALLACE CLOSES ITS BOUTIQUE DOORS AFTER NEARLY A DECADE, NOW WHAT?
A: After nearly a decade running my own label, I realized my deepest passion extended beyond fashion design into the strategy behind it — figuring out how to craft narratives that make people stop scrolling and truly connect. Instead of building a single brand, I’m stepping into a new chapter focused on strategy-first content, helping fellow founders tell their stories with intention and authenticity. Influence doesn’t have to be loud to be powerful. Looking back, House of Wallace wasn’t the end of my story; it was the foundation for everything that’s coming next. Ashley Nicole Wallace The Quiet Clout TheQuietClout.com @thequietclout
Q: WHAT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LIE ABOUT BUILDING A FASHION LABEL FROM SCRATCH, AND WHAT IS THE UNGLAMOROUS TRUTH BEHIND THE CREATIVE PROCESS?
A: The biggest lie is that talent alone wins. People love to believe that if you design the perfect product, it naturally sells itself. Building House of Wallace taught me that the best design doesn’t always win; the brand that knows how to tell its story does. Storytelling isn’t an afterthought — it is the product’s true voice. The unglamorous truth is that creativity ignores calendars. You can’t schedule inspiration between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Ideas arrive while you’re driving, in the shower or in the middle of the night. It’s a sudden frenzy you must chase, often working until 3 a.m. only to open boutique doors at 10 a.m. Outsiders see the campaign photos and launch parties, but not the quiet late nights, self-doubt and relentless discipline required behind the scenes.

MORE THAN
a Bag
A BLEND OF FASHION AND FUNCTION 30
FASH ION F OR WA R D | STYLE + BE AU T Y
A purse does more than hold your phone, keys, and wallet. It quietly pulls an outfit together while also handling the practical side of everyday life. That balance between fashion and function is what makes a great purse feel less like an accessory and more like part of a personal style. Some bags are designed to stand out. A bold color, metallic detail, or structured shape can instantly become the statement piece of an outfit. Even with simple jeans and a white T-shirt, the right purse adds personality and intention. Other times, a purse works best when it blends in. Neutral tones, soft leather, or minimalist designs create a polished look without stealing attention from the rest of the outfit. These subtle bags are often the ones people reach for every day because they work with almost everything.
FASHION TRENDS MAY CHANGE EVERY SEASON, BUT THE ROLE OF A PURSE STAYS THE SAME.
Of course, style only goes so far if a purse is impractical. The best bags are the ones that fit real life. A roomy tote helps someone move from work meetings to errands without missing a beat. Even a small clutch has a purpose for evenings out when only the essentials matter. Fashion trends may change every season, but the role of a purse stays the same. It adapts while still serving a purpose. That’s why people often invest in bags they truly love. A good purse is dependable, but it also can make a fashion statement. In many ways, a purse is one of the few accessories that people use every single day. It carries necessities, reflects personal style, and can completely change the tone of an outfit. Whether bold and eye-catching or simple and understated, a purse proves that fashion and function can exist beautifully together. S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/BUC KHAV E N
