introducing upstairs bites
Brookhaven’s modern neighborhood steakhouse just got a new upstairs obsession. Upstairs Bites is our upstairs-only menu of bold, shareable plates and signature favorites — from the Arnette’s Wagyu Burger to the Astrea Caviar Doughnut, Pork Belly Bao Buns, King Salmon Avocado Roll, Spicy Bluefin Tuna Maki Roll, and a towering raw seafood selection. Available only in the upstairs bar at Arnette’s.
Refined ingredients. Rebellious spirit. Remarkably welcoming vibe.
Hello friends,
When I was 4 years old, my parents moved our family from the west side of Detroit to the suburbs. I don't remember the logistics or the heartbreak of saying farewell to school friends. I do remember the expansive front lawn leading to a ditch and gravel road. I do remember there were NO sidewalks. Where was I supposed to ride my little bike and how was I going to walk to the neighbors to say hello?

Inside, I had my own bedroom while my four older brothers shared a huge room at the other end of the ranch house (formerly the "rec room"). My little sister, born the following year, had the room next to me with pink shag carpet. Years later, she and I mapped out hiding places for epic games of hide and seek. We discovered the green armchair next to the living room picture window gave us the best view down the road, so we could watch for our brothers' arrival home from college or pilgrimages.
To this day, I could close my eyes and draw the floorplan of that Amherst Court house. And, its hiding places.
In this, our annual HOME issue, we bring you stories about beautiful interior design in Buckhead, a Brookhaven chef's home kitchen and a historic hotel that is as warm and as welcoming as your childhood home.
Enjoy this issue! We're thankful you've taken the time to read the magazine. Next month is our 14-year anniversary of publishing BuckHaven! We're proud to be a part of your hometown.
All my best,

Atlanta's Preservation Awards
2025 Belle Turner Lynch Preservation Award winners are Gloria and Walter Cheatham and David Mitchell.
The Cheathams led the years-long effort to successfully have the Tuxedo Park Historic District listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The earlier historic homes, many designed by prominent Georgia architects, represent most of the 20th-century Revival styles, while the later homes exemplify mid-century house types. David Yoakley Mitchell, Executive Director of the Atlanta Preservation Center, led the brigade.

The Everett Hotel

Bryson City's historic landmark welcomes guests with warm cookies and more.
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUE G. COLLINS
Leaning against the exposed brick wall of my pretty suite at The Everett Hotel, I closed my eyes and imagined the captains of industry who had, in this very space, built a bank and contributed to the growth of Bryson City in the early 1900s. Stanley W. Black and D.K. Collins built and managed Bryson City Bank, one of the few small banks able to survive the financial crises in the early 30s and pay the depositors in full, occupying the Everett Street building from 1908 until the mid-1960s.
The Everett Hotel owners, hospitality entrepreneurs Ron LaRocque and Scott Mastej, renovated the first floor of the building in 2010 and opened The Cork & Bean, a coffee house and wine bar, which expanded to a full restaurant in 2013, and became The Bistro at The Everett Hotel in 2015.
That year, the second and third floors were renovated as the hotel and rooftop terrace for hotel guests and the rest is history. “One side of the property was originally a bank and there were three original safes here and we utilize one of them in the dining room. There are inspection stickers dating back to 1914,” notes Ron.
This luxury boutique hotel with ten suites is a stalwart in the sweet mountain town of Bryson City, NC, with shopping, galleries, restaurants and fabulous mountain views.

Maintaining a historic hotel takes skill and expertise, with a load of TLC and gallons of Murphy’s Oil Soap.

The boutique hotel features ten luxury suites, each reflecting the deep history of the building and the heartfelt dedication of its caretakers.
“We find maintaining our property to be second nature,” says Ron LaRocque, who greeted me with a warm smile and the efficiency of a seasoned host.”We have a wonderful staff with established standards and procedures that make the achievement of this goal possible. We have enjoyed 100 percent sanitation scores since our opening, and this reflects our team’s effort to maintain our property.”
To keep the wood floors, doors and myriad of natural surfaces looking pristine, Ron shares that his team uses Murphy’s Oil to clean, then plenty of elbow grease to buff the wood dry, leaving it refreshed and rich-looking. He swears by microfiber towels for this job.
Returning to the hotel after a day out exploring Bryson City, guests will find a plate of homebaked cookies waiting in the guest lounge where tea, coffee and water bottles are provided. This daily baked cookie service started the first day they opened in 2015 and today, guests remember the warm cookies as a beacon of hospitality at The Everett Hotel.

A DELICIOUS MARRIAGE
ARTICLE BY SUMMER J. ROBINSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREW THOMAS LEE
MEET THE COUPLE BEHIND MIRAE

“For the Lees, Mirae is an extension of home.”
It’s been a few months since Mirae, Brookhaven’s modern Asian-fusion restaurant, expanded its menu and extended its hours, and the excitement has been building ever since. The steady flow of guests walking through the sleek Brookhaven doors is a testament to what husband-and-wife restaurateurs John and Grace Lee — and their team — have built together, both inside and beyond the restaurant.
For the Lees, Mirae is an extension of home.
“Brookhaven is just a few minutes away from Chamblee, where our other restaurant is located. As soon as we came across the area, we were drawn to how welcoming and connected it is. We knew right away that this neighborhood was where we wanted to bring Mirae to life,” Grace shares. That sense of warmth and connection mirrors the values the couple prioritizes in their personal lives.

Mirae first opened in October 2025 with a limited menu. Now, the expanded offerings build upon early favorites while introducing more shareable plates, comforting hot dishes, artful desserts, and new signature items. Mirae, which means “future” in Korean, invites guests to enjoy the present moment in order to build a more meaningful future, an idea that reflects how John and Grace approach both marriage and hospitality.
Each dish is inspired by Asian culinary traditions, paired with the comfort of meals the couple has discovered along their shared path. Many of those influences begin at home. Grace, who is deeply rooted in her faith and active at her local gym, is also a passionate home cook. “Some of my go-to dishes that I cook at home are simple Korean home foods — fermented soybean paste stew, kimchi, and other Korean side dishes,” she says. “I’ve also been on a health kick lately, so I’ve been trying a lot of vegan recipes that I’ve come across on various Korean cooking shows.”
John’s downtime follows a similar rhythm. When he’s not working, he can usually be found watching golf, Korean live sports, or Korean cooking shows, moments of rest that ground him amid the pace of restaurant life.
The couple and the team behind both Fūdo and Mirae believe that every good meal begins with hospitality. From the dishes to the diverse beverage menu filled with craft cocktails, wines, sakes and sojus, every detail reflects care and intention. At Mirae, guests are welcomed into a space shaped by the comforts of home, the strength of partnership and a shared vision for the future.

At Home With Chef Christophe Truchet
ARTICLE BY BUCKHAVEN CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF
PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATHRYN MCCRARY AND HEIDI HARRIS

Brasserie Margot and Bar Margot welcome Chef Christophe Truchet, of Brookhaven, as Chef de Cuisine, overseeing the culinary program for both concepts. A native of France with a foundation in classical French cuisine and experience spanning Michelin-starred restaurants and luxury hotels around the world, Truchet brings a thoughtful, disciplined approach that aligns naturally with the restaurants’ modern French identity.
Born and raised in France, Truchet developed his passion for cooking early, shaped by time spent in the kitchen with his mother and working alongside his father on the family farm. That early connection to ingredients and process shaped a lasting respect for craftsmanship and seasonality, grounded in an understanding of food from its source through execution. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Culinary Arts from Lycée François Rabelais in Lyon, then spent the next decade refining classical technique in respected kitchens across France.
His career includes experience in Michelin-starred restaurants such as Le Bristol Paris, La Villa Archange, La Chèvre d’Or and L’Amaryllis, followed by international leadership roles at Pudong Shangri-La Shanghai and One&Only The Palm Dubai, where he collaborated with Chef Yannick Alléno. In the United States, Truchet spent nearly six years with Hilton and Waldorf Astoria properties in California and Georgia, before holding culinary leadership roles in Atlanta, including within the city’s corporate dining sector.
As Chef de Cuisine, Truchet leads day-to-day culinary operations across Brasserie Margot and Bar Margot, guiding their continued evolution while reinforcing a shared French brasserie foundation. His focus centers on execution, consistency and mentorship, supporting the kitchen team on the line while maintaining a guest-centric approach that reflects Four Seasons standards without feeling rigid or formal.
Truchet joins an established culinary leadership team that includes Executive Pastry Chef Eric Snow,
whose refined bread and pastry program remains a defining element of the Brasserie Margot experience.
We caught up with Chef Christophe at home in Brookhaven to ask about his personal kitchen.
WHAT UTENSILS AND APPLIANCES SIT OUT ON YOUR COUNTER READY FOR USE?
There is always a cast iron Le Creuset Dutch oven on my stove. I love Le Creuset and have many pieces in my cabinets, from Dutch ovens to skillets and pans. I also keep a utensil set ready with a whisk, wooden spoon and rubber spatula. My Nespresso machine is always plugged in for my morning coffee. For kitchen appliances, I prefer to keep everything put away in cabinets so we can have a nice, clear counter space.
WHAT ONE OR TWO SKILLS DO YOU USE MOST AT HOME THAT YOU LEARNED IN A RESTAURANT KITCHEN?
First, proper storage. Knowing where ingredients belong in the refrigerator and how to store them once opened so they last longer. Second, organization. I approach every meal the same way I would in a professional kitchen, with mise en place. Washing, peeling, cutting and measuring everything before cooking begins. It is a game-changer in terms of productivity.
WHAT FIVE INGREDIENTS ARE ALWAYS IN YOUR REFRIGERATOR? And in your pantry?
Five ingredients that are always in my fridge are butter, cheeses (can be grated parmesan or shredded cheese or even a piece of Camembert), tomato sauce, deli ham and eggs. With these ingredients, I can always cook a last-minute meal. In my pantry, I always keep fleur de sel from France for finishing, Dijon mustard, a black peppercorn mill, olive oil and a quart container of dry pasta. These are essential for cooking something unexpected at any time.

INTERIOR DESIGNERS LOVING WHAT THEY DO, AND IT SHOWS.

This month, come with us through two quintessential Buckhead homes - a charming Buckhead bungalow and a gorgeous spec home in Randall Mill. Though distinct in style, both homes reflect a shared philosophy: thoughtful design rooted in authenticity, function and respect for place.
Jenny Brockman, Principal Interior Designer and Owner of The Funky Debutante, takes pride in creating interiors that are both beautiful and livable. Guided by her motto, “beauty with purpose,” Jenny approaches each project as a deeply personal collaboration. “I met my clients through the referral of another client. They also followed my work on social media prior to reaching out,” she says. “Their goals for the project were to update their beautiful, historic bungalow in ways that grow with their lifestyle without losing the original character and charm of the home.”
For Jenny, home design goes far beyond selecting beautiful pieces; it’s about intentional curation. “I start with a detailed questionnaire to learn their likes, dislikes, goals and lifestyle,” she explains. “I also pay close attention to the existing pieces that they own.

This helps me know how to find the correct balance between what needs to stay and what we can edit.” Equally important is honoring the home itself. “My goal is always to beautifully transform spaces that function well while honoring the original design of the structure. This is especially critical in historic homes.”
Working alongside General Contractor Allison Bible, Jenny brought several standout moments to life. One favorite is a custom built-in bench seat in the homeowners’ daughter’s bedroom. Rather than disguising an awkwardly off-center window, Jenny embraced its asymmetry, designing a window seat and book nook that enhances its charm. “The end result is a charming nook that feels like it has always been a part of this historic Bungalow.” Another highlight emerged unexpectedly during demolition. When walls were removed in the formal living room, the original brick was uncovered in the fireplace. Jenny reshaped the firebox opening to echo the curve of the home’s original front door and kept the mantel simple. “The end result feels like it was original to the home.”

Clockwise: The Buckhead bungalow kitchen and bathroom, two views of Tinsley's kitchen design, deep blues and greens from Jenny and Allison.

Allison shares a similar appreciation for timeless materials. “I have a particular passion for countertops and natural materials — especially wood and stone in all their varied forms,” she says, noting their warmth, texture and enduring beauty.
Just down the road, another Buckhead home tells a different but equally intentional design story. Tinsley Cohen, NCIDQ, Founder of The Tinsley Studio, believes great design begins with listening. “I start by listening, whether that’s to a client’s words, lifestyle, or, in the case of a spec home, the architecture itself,” she says. For her Randall Mill project, scale, light and proportion guided a palette of nuanced neutrals and natural textures. “I’m always asking, ‘How should this space feel?’”
As spring arrives, these homes remind us that sometimes what we need isn’t a new address, but a thoughtful reset. “My goal is always to create homes that feel authentic to their setting and elevated but not intimidating,” Tinsley says. The result, in both cases, is a design that feels timeless, personal and deeply grounded in place.
