Inside and Out

How acupuncture works for what ails you ARTICLE BY BUCKHAVEN CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF

14

O UR TOWN | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

For the uninitiated, acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin needles through your skin at strategic points on your body. A key component of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is most commonly used to treat pain. Increasingly, it is being used for overall wellness, including stress management. Traditional Chinese medicine explains acupuncture as a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force — known as chi or qi (chee) — believed to flow through pathways (meridians) in your body. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, acupuncture practitioners believe that your energy flow will re-balance. To find out more, we talked to Karen A. Vega Rojas the founder of KV Acupuncture in Buckhead. She brings more than a decade of experience, combining Western and Eastern medical knowledge to every treatment. Her training began abroad, as a medical doctor where she developed a strong foundation in anatomy, physiology and clinical medicine before fully specializing in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Over the years, she has continued to study advanced acupuncture techniques, pelvic floor therapy, orthopedic recovery and integrative approaches that blend modern science with classical Chinese principles. After practicing in Pennsylvania, she relocated to Georgia and established KV Acupuncture in Buford, later expanding to Buckhead to serve a growing community seeking personalized, results-driven care. THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR TIME. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS COMMUNITY AS YOUR BUSINESS HOME? Buckhead stands out as the ideal home for K V Acupuncture because it is one of Atlanta’s most vibrant and CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/BUC KHAV E N

wellness-forward communities. People here are health-focused, diverse and deeply committed to receiving high-quality care, exactly the type of environment where integrative medicine thrives. I have been practicing Chinese Medicine for eight years, beginning my career in Pennsylvania before relocating to Georgia. I opened my first practice in Buford, where I have proudly served patients for nearly four years and continue to do so today. After moving into the city of Atlanta, I took time to explore the area, research different neighborhoods and truly understand where KV Acupuncture could grow next. Through that process, Buckhead emerged as the natural home for my boutique-style practice. Its energy, values and commitment to wellness align perfectly with my vision. That is why I opened my second location here this past April, creating a warm, intimate space that reflects who I am as a practitioner and the level of care I strive to provide. Buckhead’s blend of young professionals, families and active residents also creates strong demand for services that support stress relief, injury recovery, hormonal balance and overall well-being. KV Acupuncture fits seamlessly into this growing wellness ecosystem, offering personalized, results-driven and transformative care. I’m excited to continue growing roots here and serving this community for many years to come.

As a Chinese medicine practitioner, I look at the broader context of someone’s life, because every detail contributes to the bigger picture of their health and helps me to design the most accurate and effective treatment plan.

FOR THE UNINITIATED, WALK US THROUGH A FIRST-TIMER’S ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT. The first acupuncture appointment is one of the most meaningful parts of a patient’s healing journey, which is why I dedicate 90 - 120 minutes to every new patient. This time allows us to truly connect, build trust and lay the foundation for a strong practitioner-patient relationship. During this initial visit, I focus not only on the main concern, though that is essential, but also on understanding the whole person. As a Chinese medicine practitioner, I look at the broader context of someone’s life, because every detail contributes to the bigger picture of their health and helps me to design the most accurate and effective treatment plan. I ask about sleep habits, lifestyle, digestion, emotional well-being (if they feel comfortable sharing), energy levels and different body functions. Together, these details reveal the patient’s internal ecosystem and help me identify where imbalances may be coming from. After this in-depth conversation and assessment, I design a personalized treatment plan and select acupuncture points tailored not just to the main condition, but also to any underlying patterns that need support. The needles are placed and retained for about 20 minutes, allowing the body to shift into a deep restorative state. Once the needles are removed, we discuss the proposed treatment plan: how acupuncture can support their goals, what changes to expect and the next steps we will take together. My goal is that every patient leaves their first appointment feeling seen, understood and confident about the path we are creating for their healing.

1. Orthopedic Pain & Injuries Lower back pain is the number one reason patients seek my care. However, I treat a wide range of orthopedic issues, whether it’s recovering from an injury, managing chronic pain or addressing sudden muscle spasms. 2. Emotional Wellness & Stress-Related Conditions Many patients come in experiencing emotional distress, including stress, anxiety, depression and feelings of overwhelm. Acupuncture can be deeply regulating and supportive for people navigating these challenges. 3. Pelvic Floor Dysfunction (My Specialty) A significant part of my practice focuses on pelvic floor disorders. This includes urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, chronic constipation, postpartum pelvic issues and chronic lower abdominal pain, among others. It is an area where acupuncture can make a profound difference, often providing relief when other treatments have not. These three categories ref lect the diversit y of conditions acupuncture can effectively support, and the holistic, patient-centered approach that guides ever y treatment at K V Acupuncture. My approach is deeply compassionate and boutique by design: I take time to listen, understand your lifestyle and consider the physical and emotional patterns influencing your health. Whether treating pain, metabolic imbalance, emotional distress or pelvic floor dysfunction, my goal is always the same: To help you reconnect your balance, activate your body’s healing potential and feel supported every step of the way.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON COMPLAINTS THAT BRING PATIENTS TO YOUR PRACTICE? In my clinic, the most frequent concerns tend to fall into three main categories:

In blender, add the squash, maple syrup and cold butter, then blend till smooth. Fill the blended squash in pastry piping bag. Prepare the crisp baby kale. Lightly oil the kale leaves and roast at 350°F for five minutes or until crisp, (watch closely, as kale burns quickly). Now, let’s assemble the dish! In a mixing bowl add cooked wild rice and black-eyed peas. Then spoon the rice and blackeyed peas mixture in a ring mold, or spoon it neatly on the plates. FINDING HER FOOTING

Dr. E's home-based reset regime ARTICLE BY CASEY KELLY

Buckhead dermatologist Dr. Corinne Erickson found herself at the intersection of several physical challenges - perimenopausal joint and muscle pain, the need to rebuild muscle for bone protection and managing Type 1 Diabetes. To top it off, perimenopause also brought on insulin resistance.

“We’ve traded screen time for mat time, and even the puppies are trying their best downward dog.” It began when the forty-something physician visited her physical therapist for neck spasms. During the session, the therapist discovered a problem with her right shoulder. “My range of motion was significantly reduced, so we started a regular cadence of dry needling and gentle stretching exercises,” Dr. Erickson explained. The injury had happened during yoga - her longtime fitness routine - and once she stopped practicing, everything seemed to tighten up. “I ached when I slept, when I climbed stairs. And running - my old friend that helped me manage decades of Type 1 Diabetes and stress - was out of the question because of my lower back,” she said.

Recognizing the signs of musculoskeletal syndrome of menopause - a mix of muscle loss, bone density decline, and dropping estrogen - Dr. Erickson knew she needed a serious reset. Now, she’s embracing a home-based, selfpaced f itness plan that includes strength training three times a week, cardio f ive times a week and mind-body balance with Pilates or yoga t wo times a week. How does a busy doctor, mom of two, wife and dog owner make it happen? “Everyone joins in when they can,” she laughs. “We’ve traded screen time for mat time, and even the puppies are trying their best downward dog.”

HAPPY, HEALTHY

2026

ARTICLE BY ESTHER RUSSELL, DNP, FNP-C,

28

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | H E ALT H + WE LLN E SS

Esther Russell, DNP, FNP-C

We often see New Year’s resolutions related to health, with getting fit and stopping smoking at the top. These are great ideas, but they can often feel daunting and overwhelming. One slip and you feel like you have failed. Too many individuals throw in the towel on their specific goal by February. So instead, let’s start with the resolution to make 2026 your “Year of Health.” There are many different ways to succeed in your Year of Health, and it looks different for everyone. It can be physical, psychological or both! Here are some ideas. EAT TO NOURISH YOUR BODY Remember what they say - you are what you eat! Swap drastic fad diets for realistic, steady and balanced nutritional habits that you can sustain long-term. Eat more fruits and vegetables, choose healthy complex carbohydrates like whole grains, and be sure to get enough protein. Avoid ultra-processed foods - you know the ones with 20 ingredients on the label that you can’t pronounce! Fresh, real, whole food is the key. Avoid sugary drinks and limit alcohol consumption. Be sure to drink plenty of water every day. GET MOVING Physical activity supports mood, heart health and energy. The American Heart Association suggests at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise each week. Adding strength training two days each week helps burn calories, increase lean muscle mass and reduce body fat. No matter what you choose, pick exercises you enjoy, which means you’re more likely to continue. Even if you are starting from a very sedentary lifestyle, any increase in regular exercise is beneficial. Start with a 10-minute walk every day, take the stairs instead of the elevator and park at

the back of the parking lot. Remember, it is all about improvement rather than perfection. We can increase one step at a time. SLEEP MORE, STRESS LESS Adequate sleep encourages a healthy metabolism, a strong immune system and a good mood. Experts suggest seven to nine hours of good sleep nightly for most adults. Stay away from screens 30 minutes to one hour before going to bed. A calm bedtime routine, such as meditation or reading, can help set you up for successful sleep. During your waking hours, try lessening stress with practices such as yoga, deep breathing techniques and journaling. When stress, anxiety or insomnia becomes overwhelming, quickly reach for a mental health professional. Sleep is vital. If it means leaving the dishes in the sink overnight so you can get a good night’s rest, so be it! MAKE PREVENTIVE CARE A PRIORITY Before 2026 gets away from you, book your annual wellness exams. In addition to a general physical exam, get important screening tests. These include cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes and age-appropriate cancer screenings. Screenings are great ways to catch diseases early, which could allow for easier treatment. Many parents and caretakers put themselves on the back burner for too long while focusing on their loved ones. Remember that your health is important too, and you cannot help anyone else if you are in poor health, so make this your Year of Good Health. The Air You Don't See

ARTICLE BY TANYA COVENTRY STRADER

Why indoor air qualit y matters for your family's health 32

FAM ILY CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

When we think about air pollution, we picture smoggy city skylines or industrial smokestacks. But the air that matters most to our health isn’t outside—it’s the air we’re breathing right now, indoors. Americans spend approximately 90% of our time inside our homes, offices, schools and vehicles. That means the quality of indoor air has a profound impact on our wellness, yet it’s something most of us never think about. Indoor air can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air, and in some cases, up to 100 times worse! Twenty-one years ago, Mothers and Others for Clean Air was founded by Laura Turner Seydel and Stephanie Blank because Atlanta’s air was incredibly polluted and our children were suffering from some of the highest asthma rates in the country. Laura and Stephanie were mothers who saw children struggling to breathe, and they knew they had to act. Since then, the organization has advocated for policies that mitigate air pollution and its harmful effect on children’s health. Many factors affect the air we breathe indoors. Gas stoves emit nitrogen dioxide—the same pollutant found in car exhaust—right into our kitchens. Nonstick pans can release chemicals that cause cancer in most animals. Candles and air fresheners also release harmful chemicals. Wood-burning fireplaces pump particulate matter into our living spaces. Even new furniture and carpets can off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for months. The good news? We have more control over indoor air quality than we realize. Plants naturally purify air. HEPA air filters and purifiers remove harmful particles. Simple choices—like switching to clean beeswax or soy candles or improving ventilation—can make a meaningful difference in our families’ health. Unfortunately, the home isn’t the only place where children are exposed to shockingly poor air quality. There is also a real danger that children breathe toxic air almost daily, with no control over it on their school buses. The air inside a diesel school bus is 10 to 15 times more polluted than the air children breathe outside. Diesel exhaust

The good news? We have more control over indoor air quality than we realize. Plants naturally purify air. contains over 40 toxic air contaminants. These pollutants don’t just trigger asthma attacks—they impair lung development, reduce cognitive ability and lower test scores. Children who ride diesel buses don’t just feel worse; they literally learn less. This is why much of our work has centered on cleaning up dirty diesel school buses; with Federal funding on hold, our focus is on getting air purifiers onto Georgia’s 20,000 school buses. The best solution is electric buses—but until that happens, we can’t let children breathe toxic air twice a day, five days a week. This January, as you think about wellness resolutions, consider the air your family breathes. Open windows when the weather permits. Add plants to your home. Invest in air purifiers and change the HEPA filters in HVAC systems quarterly. And if your children ride a diesel school bus, advocate for cleaner air on their daily commute. Because we all share the air, and what you can’t see matters most of all. It’s all a matter of life and breath. Tanya Coventry Strader is Executive Director of Mothers and Others for Clean Air, a Georgia nonprofit dedicated to protecting children’s health by improving air quality. BAT H I NG I N NAT U R E

A wellness weekend away in Bryson City, North Carolina

Ninety minutes in a bath sounded like a lot to me before my treetop soak in a private cabana at Lakeview at Fontana near Bryson City, NC. After a short but steep hike up a forested trail from the unmanned reception lounge (“Unplug. Unwind. Unhosted.” is Lakeview’s tagline), I found my cabana, a tiny mountain cabin open to the elements on one side. While I ran the bath (plenty of hot water), I used the loo (not open to the elements), changed into a fluffy robe and stepped down onto my private

deck to take it all in. The view from the deck and tub reached to the Great Smoky Mountains across Fontana Lake, with nary a human in sight. The experience was nurturing and heart-opening, bathing in the quiet embrace of the surrounding forest while soaking in an oversized tub built for two, a luxury for one. Soaking in a hot tub in the middle of the woods is multi-sensory therapy. And, the timing was perfect. Earlier in the day, we hiked a few challenging miles along the Flint Ridge

with Barrett Wood, one of the knowledgeable guides from Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC), where we were staying. He collected a handful of different-shaped leaves, all from the oak trees we walked beneath. He studied dendrology (the study of trees and other woody plants) and is also an avid birder, making our hike educational and enjoyable. Nantahala Outdoor Center’s 500-acre main campus is bustling during the warmer months, with white water rafting and kayaking rentals and trips, a zipline adventure park, three restaurants and a variety of accommodations. But this time of year, it’s quiet and perfectly positioned where the Appalachian Trail meets the Nantahala River near the Great Smoky Mountains for rest and restoration. Or for hiking, fishing, biking and forest bathing. The NOC’s new bungalow-style cabins, The Hemlocks, are modern one and two-bedroom homes with wrap-around decks and expansive views from a vaulted great room with an electric fireplace, huge TV and kitchenette. The River’s End Restaurant just down the hill is open year-round, serving comfort food, a really beefy, thick chili and great service. Bryson City’s historic downtown is a scenic 20-minute drive from The Hemlocks. Stop at Cardinal Coffee on the way for a really good latte, baked goods and local art.

CURE CHILDHOOD CANCER ’S 12TH ANNUAL BELIE VE BALL

CURE Childhood Cancer’s 12th annual Believe Ball, presented by Delta Air Lines, Novelis and Chicken Salad Chick, was held at The St. Regis Atlanta. Featuring legendary comic Jeff Foxworthy as emcee, the event raised $2.1 million in proceeds benefiting CURE. Since its inception, the black-tie event has raised nearly $15 million to fund targeted research to find a cure for pediatric cancer and to provide crisis-oriented services to families. A highlight of the Believe Ball was CURE’s presentation of the Ragab Spirit of Hope Award to Dr. Harry W. Findley, Jr. The award is named for Dr. Abdel Ragab — Emory University’s first pediatric oncologist and founder of CURE Childhood Cancer — and honors individuals who exemplify the dedication and commitment to children with cancer that Dr. Ragab embodied. Dr. Findley conducted groundbreaking research with Dr. Ragab and was among the first to discover that acute lymphoblastic leukemia – the most common childhood cancer – is not a single disease, but three distinct subtypes requiring different treatments. This discovery revolutionized the way leukemia is treated and paved the way for targeted therapies that continue saving children today. CureChildhoodCancer.org
