When we wanted to know how we got here, we checked with our friends at Buckhead Heritage. In 1838, Henry Irby purchased 202 ½ acres surrounding the present intersection of Peachtree, Roswell, and West Paces Ferry Roads for just $650. He soon established a tavern at the junction and a community was born. In 1840, the Georgia Legislature designated Henry Irby’s house as an election district and in 1841, a United States Post Office was established in the small crossroads community. During the late 19th century, the pottery industry began to develop in Buckhead because of the fine quality of clay in the area. In 1879, the Rolader family established their homestead in the southeast portion of what is now the West Paces/ Northside Neighborhood. William Washington Rolader purchased 49 ½ acres and subsequently moved a one-room log cabin to the property along Moores Mill Road. His pottery business made whiskey jugs, milk pitchers, and butter churns. Around the turn of the century, Buckhead became the site of summer cottages for Atlanta’s wealthy citizens. In 1897, John K. Ottley, the president of First National Bank, bought 150 acres around today’s Lenox property (and paid just $1,816.48 for the land). During the early 1900s, neighborhood growth spurred more commercial development. Jacobs’ Drugstore, which became an exceedingly popular gathering place, opened in 1917 at the intersection of Peachtree and Roswell Roads. These gathering places remain central to our local heartbeat. In this month's issue, we are thrilled to feature creatives among us who make us love local. Artists and makers who are opening our eyes and reassuring us through color, texture and shape. You can support them at local galleries and art centers. Brent Ellis is the founder of Dear Elouise, a Buckhead-based boutique creative paper studio, and Buckhead Printery, a custom print shop. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and worked in advertising before going back to school to study design at Atlanta’s Portfolio Center. She began designing invitations for friends and family, and business took off, leading her to officially launch Dear Elouise in 2015. “Buckhead is where I grew up, and when I moved back to Atlanta, I knew I wanted to raise kids here. I love the neighborhoods within the area, the parks, schools, trees and access to restaurants and city activity,” says Brent.

Dear Elouise started as a fully custom studio, and today, the business now also offers stationery that can be personalized for life’s most treasured moments, including birth announcements, holiday cards, personal stationery for adults, babies and kids, and wedding stationery. Brent’s semi-custom wedding collection includes invitation suites, save the dates, shower and party invitations, and day-of wedding stationery like ceremony programs, reception menus, escort cards and more. Named for Brent’s grandmother, Dear Elouise has garnered national attention, and Brent has collaborated with brands like Sister

Parish Design on special collections. Brent has become a trusted fixture in the Southeast and around the world for her hands-on design process that strikes a seamless balance between traditional and contemporary. Whether fully custom or part of her semi-custom collections, each stationery piece embodies client preferences around print method, ink, paper, envelope, font, script and pattern. In 2018, Brent purchased a print shop and rare historic engraving machine that dates back to 1892. She renamed the business Buckhead Printery. The beloved print shop is committed to preserving the art of antique printing techniques by handcrafting fine stationery for Dear Elouise clients and other paper designers across the country. Brent has three letterpress machines, two engraving machines (including a rare historic engraving machine that dates back to 1910) and a foil press. Our approach is a collective one from start to finish,” says Brent. “Each of our clients brings his or her own unique vision to the table, and we are dedicated to bringing that aesthetic to life. Buckhead Heritage recently announced the recipients of the Belle Turner Lynch Preservation Award and the Bob Helget Award for Outstanding Volunteerism. The organization strives to enhance the quality of life in Buckhead by identifying, preserving, and promoting its historic resources.

The Belle Turner Lynch Preservation Award was presented to Audrey Collins and Rhonda Jackson for their work with Piney Grove Cemetery. This annual award recognizes distinguished individuals, nonprofit organizations, public agencies, and corporations whose skill and determination have given new meaning to their communities through the preservation of their architectural and cultural heritage. Piney Grove Cemetery is the last vestige of the Piney Grove community and the Piney Grove Church, which was demolished in 1996. A commercial developer acquired the property with conditions for cemetery access and maintenance. Despite zoning conditions, the condominium association has failed to maintain proper access and upkeep, endangering this vital piece of history. Rhonda and Audrey, who are descendants of individuals buried at the cemetery, established the Friends of Piney Grove Cemetery and have worked tirelessly toward its preservation by organizing clean-up campaigns, establishing a Facebook group, and advocating for public education and awareness. Audrey and Rhonda have been hands-on volunteers working to save this important piece of Buckhead history. Eleanor Baughman won the Buckhead Heritage Bob Helget Award for Outstanding Volunteerism. This award is given to members who have demonstrated volunteer service that is conspicuously above and beyond the reasonably expected duties and responsibilities of a Buckhead Heritage volunteer.

My paintings and mural installations present viewers with highly stylized versions of nature using techniques that combine reality with abstraction. I do not try to replicate nature or real space, instead I use the familiar genre of landscape to represent both the physical and emotional conditions that shape our environment. In my imagery I want to create the impression that the horizon is malleable, perpetually transforming and adapting to human intervention and natural phenomenon. In my studio practice, I seek to find order, humor, and balance in the chaotic beauty that is life and I make a visual appeal to be empathetic and hopeful in tumultuous times.

Sarah Emerson I graduated from the Atlanta College of Art in 1998 and completed my Master’s Degree at Goldsmiths College, London in 2000. I am in a number of local collections including the High Museum, MOCA GA, Edelman, and King & Spalding. In my career I have worked on multiple painting series and large-scale mural projects, exhibiting my work in galleries throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, including White Columns, NY, Cosmic Gallery, Paris, the MOCA Jacksonville, Fl., and the High Museum. My work has been published in Noplaceness: Art in a Post Urban Landscape, Stickers Deluxe: From Punk Rock to Contemporary Art, and New American Paintings in 2012, 2007, and 2003. In 2014 I was awarded the 2014/2015 MOCA GA Working Artist Project Grant selected by Siri Engberg, Senior Curator at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Over the last fifteen years, I have worked on exhibition and mural projects with the City of Atlanta, Living Walls, Flux Projects, Refinery 29, and the Zuckerman Museum. B. “Jay” Mannelly, Jr. of Brookhaven during its annual St. Peter Chanel Society Recognition Celebration at the Atlanta History Center. Named in honor of the Marist saint martyred for his faith, the St. Peter Chanel Award represents the highest distinction bestowed by Marist School. It recognizes individuals whose unwavering selflessness, exceptional support and dedicated leadership have profoundly advanced the Marist mission in education. Jay Mannelly’s outstanding contributions exemplify these values, making him a deserving recipient of this esteemed honor. Each year, the event provides Marist School the opportunity to convey appreciation for all leadership donors who contributed to the school’s annual fund within the St. Peter Chanel Society during the previous fiscal year. Marist School President J. D. Childs set the tone for the evening by praising Mannelly’s devotion to Marist, remarking, “Jay Mannelly—along with those who have previously received the St. Peter Chanel Award—exemplifies an extraordinary and commendable dedication to Marist School that deserves special recognition. He embodies a distinctive humility and gift for hospitality and welcome.” Jay Mannelly, co-founder and principal of Atlanta real estate development firm Bullock Mannelly Partners, Inc., has been a devoted supporter of Marist School since his eldest son enrolled in 1984. As both a parent and grandparent of alumni, as well as a member of Marist School’s Board of Trustees since 2009, Mannelly

acknowledges Marist’s significant place in his family’s life. His commitment to fostering the educational initiatives at Marist is inspired by the proverb: “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” Recognizing that education is the foundation of life, Mannelly has played an instrumental role in sustaining and advancing the school’s mission of forming the whole person in the image of Christ. Mannelly witnessed the academic and extracurricular successes of his two sons and three grandsons who graduated from Marist School. His service as the Booster Club president during the 19891990 academic year and his induction into the Blue & Gold Athletics Circle in 2017 underscore his enduring commitment to Marist athletics. Mannelly has generously supported Marist over the years by contributing to the annual fund, capital campaigns, the endowment and various other initiatives aimed at enriching the full spectrum of programs and the enduring financial well-being of the school. “Marist School has become a large part of my family. One important concept of a Marist family is that family is broader than a last name or blood relative. Marist family is the entire community,” says Mannelly. Jay Mannelly’s dedication and generous contributions of time, talent and resources have left a lasting mark on Marist School, enhancing the educational experience for generations of students. His legacy is a testament to the spirit of community that defines Marist School.
