April showers bring May flowers, my mom would promise as she held up my galoshes and raincoat. Of course, growing up in Michigan, those showers might be frozen, with one last snowfall to trudge through. Here in Buckhead and Brookhaven, we wait for the tulips, azaleas, lily of the valley, peonies and crocus to pop up to reward us after months of bare branches and cooler temperatures. SPRING is here! A season of promise, reminding us to get outdoors, tidy our yards, and take stock of all we are blessed with. Buckhead Heritage Honors Buckhead Heritage presented the 2022 Belle Turner Lynch Preservation Award to English and Matt Norman and the Bob Helget Award for Outstanding Volunteerism to Ivan Allen IV. Buckhead Heritage is dedicated to identifying, preserving, restoring and promoting Buckhead’s historic resources. The Normans have worked since 2010 to restore The Meredith House and successfully listed it on the National Register of Historic Places. Allen has significantly contributed to the preservation of New Hope AME Church cemetery.

I was not really sure what to expect when I stepped off the plane in Willemstad, Curaçao. I had heard about Curaçao before, but never imagined such a beautiful island overflowing with culture and history. Located some 44 miles off the coast of Venezuela, Curaçao is the largest of the islands, both in size and in population, that make up the Dutch Caribbean. Everyone is welcome to share in the “Dushi” life of Curaçao. In the local Papiamentu language, Dushi is affirmational and all meanings are positive. Dushi is tasty, beautiful, sexy, sweet, delicious, or just plain old nice. It is literally the favorite adjective of the island. The country of Curaçao even has a nickname: Dushi Korsou. Willemstad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, accommodates some 743 notable international monuments. Its rich, globally-influenced history illustrates the organic growth of a multicultural community over three centuries. Willemstad’s people and maritime history are vibrantly expressed through the city’s incredible

public art installations. Beautifully colored sculptures and murals adorn the buildings, courtyards, and park benches throughout this breathtaking seaside paradise – each telling a different and unique story of Curaçao. Grab a scooter and get lost amongst the pastel crayon-colored Dutch colonial buildings that give way to hidden sculpture gardens, neighborhood art galleries, painted staircases and adorned alleyways. Be sure to catch Curaçao’s “big sister,” Chichi, the ubiquitous Rubenesque lady of the island who is always portrayed with brightly patterned, vivid fabrics. Downtown Willemstad boasts some of the city’s best sites including the one-of-a-kind Queen Emma Floating Bridge and Wilhelmina Plaza. For a real taste of the island, don’t forget a local rum tasting at Annabay Club or catch an authentic island lunch at Plasa Bieu Food Hall. Whether you feel like a quick snack or a gourmet meal, there are many options. Restaurant Nultwintig, with its sleek beachside dining room, is the ultimate island dining experience. Artfully plated local ingredients dazzle thanks to an international team of very gifted chefs. Ceviche 91 Gastrobar lives up to its name by offering creative and innovative ceviche as well as international cuisine and tapas. Also, be sure to check out Number Ten Café for lunch. Located in a restored mansion located on the grounds of Landhuis Bloemhof, Number Ten is eclectically decorated and offers a simple but upscale café experience. Get out and explore the island. Curaçao is only 171 square miles so you can really get anywhere and back in just one day. There are 38 sun-soaked beaches in Curaçao to explore and the beach life is incredible. While some of the beaches are developed, most are tucked into the hidden coves that dot the island’s shores. pristine blue waters, each beach and cove is unique and offers a different glimpse into island life. The waters that surround this tiny island nation are home to expansive coral reefs brimming with marine life and are perfect for snorkeling or diving. Sometimes you just want to do nothing on vacation, but don’t realize it until you pack the car with big plans and bags of gear, arrive at the resort, unpack, get your bearings and exhale. With luck (and planning), you’ll find yourself at the expansive Wild Dunes Resort in South Carolina, an easy fivehour drive to the tip of Isle of Palms, just outside Charleston. With 1,600 acres to explore on bike or foot, you can stay busy or find a lounge chair by one of the pools or on the beach to do less. The resort promises “unpretentious luxury” which, to us, meant all the amenities of an elevated resort in the company of families, friendly staff and plenty of opportunities for fun. The Sweetgrass Inn, which recently received a pretty renovation, is a modern oceanfront sanctuary that sits on four acres of the liveliest area at the resort,

featuring 153 rooms, sparkling pools, a world-class spa, al fresco dining, bustling meetings, and a rooftop bar. Also on the same campus, and a short stroll from the beach and resort recreation, is the Boardwalk Inn with 93 rooms. The decor across both is coastal, but with unexpected sophisticated touches of art and bold colors. From the warm welcome provided by the valet (self-parking is available), to the excellent service provided by wait staff, the vibe is professional, but approachable and friendly. Our dinner at Coastal Provisions, the signature restaurant and bar inside the Boardwalk Inn lobby overlooking the pool, was excellent. The She Crab Soup with brioche croutons was better than my motherin-law’s (my gold standard) and the saffron pappardelle with braised shank, sun-dried tomatoes and goat cheese pistachios was

surprising and rich. Everything on the menu reflected Chef de Cuisine, Thalia Smith’s careful attention and creativity. A nightcap on the rooftop at The Nest gave us a chance to watch the stars come out, then we took our drinks down to the beach to feel small against the expansive sky and lapping waves of the Atlantic. Continue to feel grounded by booking a facial or massage at the Spa at Sweetgrass, with a mellow and shady spa-only outdoor patio lounge. You could easily spend the day reading, noshing and melting into the fluffy robes, drifting in and out of your vacation. Dangling over a plunging 90 foot waterfall, my life was now in the hands of the young guides who led our small group deep into the jungle of the coastal mountains of Honduras on the Rio Cangrejal. After a crash course, thorough and hands-on, I was expected to rappel backwards, leaning into my harness, steering my descent with a wide stance and footfalls against the slippery rocks. So, double-harnessed and helmeted I locked eyes with the guide who smiled and gave me the thumbs-up.

With non-stop flights servicing the bay island of Roatán and coastal port city of La Ceiba, Honduras offers an adventure destination beyond the diving that the Caribbean barrier reef waters are known for. With my gaze hazy from the spray and splashing water, I focused on listening for his directions, using my right hand to grip the rope just under my seat, releasing it to drop a little farther down the vertical canyon. The crash of the waterfall was deafening, so I just kept moving aggressively until I could jump into the river and scramble onto a sunny rock to do my victory dance which included a wide smile and expletives. Our “canyoning” continued as we gingerly hiked the banks and swam down the narrow river through the thick brush, climbing moss-covered ledges, jumping into pools, abseiling a few more challenging waterfalls and finally swimming up to the small dock at Las Cascadas Lodge, the eco resort where our adventure had begun three hours earlier. Divers flock to the island to explore the Mesoamerican Reef, the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, stretching nearly 700 miles from the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula down through the Honduran Bay Islands. Cayos Cochinos is an archipelago of 15 islands and is home to Cayos Cochinos Foundation, supporting conservation initiatives, including sustainable tourism and preservation of biodiversity together with the local Garífuna community. Tell us about your most memorable recent holiday getaway, the location, who you were traveling with, the month/year you traveled, and why it was memorable. A: Hands down, my most memorable vacation was our honeymoon to Italy in 2017. We flew into Florence, rented a car, spent the day in Siena, and then drove to Lupaia in Tuscany. Lupaia is a romantic hideaway near Montepulciano.

From our room, the view of nearby villages, vineyards and olive groves was absolutely stunning. It was like looking at a painting. We did day trips to nearby towns including, Montepulciano, San Gimignanello and Montefollonico. The food was amazing, but we didn’t feel too guilty because we walked so much.
