Georgia native Aimee Copeland found herself fighting for her life after being diagnosed with a rare flesh-eating bacterial infection from a 2012 zip-lining accident. As the doctors did what they could to save her, they had to amputate both of her hands, one foot, and much of one leg. The road to recovery was a long one. As Aimee went through rehab, she realized that her old adventurous lifestyle had to change… or did it? New challenges made Aimee determined to find a way to still enjoy her true passion: the great outdoors. She started the Aimee Copeland Foundation, a cause that works to provide greater access to the outdoors to those with physical challenges. Recently, the foundation partnered with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to provide free, high mobility all-terrain track wheelchairs at 11 state parks, historic sites and a wildlife center. The initiative encourages those with disabilities to reconnect with nature and history, explore nature trails, go fishing and attend adaptive hunts. All-terrain track chairs are designed for use on more difficult types of terrain, to hit the trails and navigate through mud, water, sand and snow. Qualifying Park visitors can experience a sense of freedom that can be difficult to have in an everyday wheelchair. All-terrain track chairs can be used for hiking, hunting, fishing and other outdoor education and recreational activities. The chairs are provided free to visitors who qualify, including those with Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, spinal cord injuries and lower limb amputations. We applaud Aimee for charging ahead, into the woods and a healthy lifestyle. CONTINUED >

Poor vi Chordia, an attending physician at Grady Hospital, and her husband Abe Thomas, a Har vard-trained radiologist, are bringing the best tea from India to BuckHaven. Tea is rooted in their culture, but Poorvi and Abe’s decision to launch a tea brand was triggered by the pandemic. While on the frontline as doctors, their passion for tea grew fonder as they cherished the time spent at home with their young daughters. This included an interest in loose-leaf teas, studying to be a tea sommelier, and tending to their urban garden. In a leap of faith, last fall Poorvi and Abe started selling their tea, Noble Roots, on the weekends at local farmer’s markets. After merely 12 months, they attracted a loyal following of tea lovers and enthusiasts. This fall they launched nationwide with Herbs & Kettles, a collection of premium teas from India, available for purchase online, including their top-selling golden lattes and herbal tea blends. “Because we have met most of our tea growers, we are very confident that we are sharing some of the finest and best tasting whole-leaf teas from India’s tea regions with Atlanta and beyond,” explains Poorvi. The quality and taste of their tea is paramount, but as a certified tea sommelier, Poorvi emphasizes the importance of how to select, prepare, and steep the perfect cup of tea. The Herbs & Kettles premium tea collection is verified by their in-person visits to small and midsize gardens and with farmers who are committed to harvesting single source, single batch. These select growers that they collaborate with produce high-quality specialty whole-leaf teas versus broken-leaf teas and are committed to fair trade and fair labor practices. While Poorvi and Abe travel to India for business and family, there’s no place like their home in Buckhead’s Castlewood neighborhood. Aside from tea, they are passionate about traveling. Their summer family trip included a trek to Glacier National Park. “We truly love living in Buckhead, as it is exciting while also being a superb location to raise a family and start a business,” says Poorvi. “We love that Buckhead is a part of Atlanta, but still has its own unique feel with top-notch dining, recreation, and shopping. Fans of the AMC drama, The Walking Dead, will recognize Melissa Ponzio as original Woodbury resident, Karen – the lone survivor of the Governor’s attack on their own army in the third season finale. During season four, Karen met her untimely, shocking and pivotal demise in a turn of events that reverberated through the remainder of the season. Based in Atlanta, Melissa is also the star of Paramount+’s Teen Wolf: The Movie. Melissa recently wrapped a role in writer/director Ali Scher’s coming-of-age family comedy feature, Popular Theory, with Cheryl Hines. The film is scheduled for a U.S. theatrical release in 2023. Teen Wolf: The Movie is streaming exclusively on Paramount+ on January 26. We caught up with Melissa to find out why she loves living in BuckHaven!

YOUR FAVORITE OUTDOOR SPACES TO WALK IN THIS AREA OF ATLANTA? The Peachtree Creek Greenway has been wonderful this fall. It’s an easy out and back on the trail. A great combo of nature and metro vibes. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT LIVING IN ATLANTA? My grandparents retired here in the 70s, so Atlanta has always been my home in a way. There is so much personal history here for me. I’ve seen it evolve and I love the growth of the city over time. Especially with the film & television industry. It’s thriving. Atlanta is the place to be!

Whether you’re looking for a place to reconnect with nature, to give yourself a challenge on your daily run, or to take a casual stroll with some beautiful vistas, PATH400 fits the bill. This multi-use trail has been a work in progress for almost a decade, and each time a new section opens it adds an exciting new element to the PATH400 experience. Construction for the final major section of the 5.2-mile Buckhead portion of the trail is underway and when it wraps up in 2025, you’ll be able to walk, bike or jog all the way from Miami Circle to Loridans Park. Eventually the trail will continue northward along GA 400, snaking through the newly reconfigured interchange at I-285 and connecting to Sandy Springs.
There’s no need to wait for those connections to begin enjoying PATH400, though. Here are some of the best spots to enjoy on PATH400 right now. FOR AN ARTFUL STROLL: The half-mile stretch of PATH400 between Wieuca Road and Old Ivy Road features five colorful murals created by local artists. The 35-foot-wide panels have become one of PATH400’s most popular Instagram spots, and they add a good measure of inspiration as you walk along this section of the trail. FOR A CHALLENGING RUN: While PATH400 has many flat stretches that are good for an easy jog, there are also several large hills to get your heart pumping. One of the biggest challenges awaits runners on PATH400 just south of the Gordon Bynum Bridge near Lenox Square. Pick up the trail at Miami Circle and head north. Just past the scenic Maxine Rock Plaza, PATH400 takes a sharp incline that is sure to be a challenge. CONTINUED >

FOR A PICNIC: Grab your lunch and head over to Old Ivy Park, a greenspace on PATH400 near its intersection with Old Ivy Road. Hand-painted, colorful picnic tables add a fun element to your outdoor dining experience. There are plans to add exercise equipment under the GA 400 overpass soon, so you’ll be able to get in a quick workout here too. FOR A GREAT VIEW: There are many spots along PATH400 that could compete for best vista, but it’s hard to beat a classic – the view of the Buckhead skyline from the original half-mile of trail between the Buckhead Loop and Old Ivy Road. FOR TRAINSPOTTING: Whether your little one is a fan of Thomas the Tank Engine or the Little Engine That Could, they’ll love getting a chance to see real-life trains zoom close by as they walk along PATH400 between Miami Circle and Lenox Park. This section of the trail weaves beside and beneath MARTA and Norfolk Southern train tracks, offering several opportunities for close-up views that will delight the young and the young-at-heart.

Buckhead Heritage Society, in partnership with the city of Atlanta and Mayor Andre Dickens, is restoring the historical name of Bagley Park on Pharr Road. Formerly enslaved people founded the community, where the park is now, in the 1870s. In 1929, William Bagley purchased six lots there after being forced to flee his 84-acre Forsyth County farm in 1912. He was a well-respected community leader. While developer Frank C. Owens laid out a formal neighborhood that he called Macedonia Park in 1921, the area became known colloquially as Bagley Park. “My mother grew up in Bagley Park and had strong and wonderful memories of the neighborhood,” says Elon Osby, William Bagley’s granddaughter. “We didn’t know the city had renamed it until we drove by one day. It was very upsetting for our family. We are grateful that Buckhead Heritage has taken up the mantle.” “By restoring the original name of the park, the city ensures the history of the area will be preserved for all residents, including the many who grow up playing baseball on its fields,” says Charlotte Margolin, President, Buckhead Heritage. “It honors the men and women who built a thriving community and were instrumental in creating the Buckhead we know today.” At its peak, approximately 400 families called Bagley Park home. Black-owned businesses, including a grocery store, a restaurant and a blacksmith, served them. It was also home to several churches, including Mt. Olive Methodist Episcopal Church and an associated cemetery. William Bagley died in 1939, and he and his wife, Ida, are interred in Mt. Olive cemetery. Many of the Bagley Park residents worked as domestic help in the form of maids, laundresses, chauffeurs and yardmen for the white residents of Buckhead. According to census records, there were also several gardeners for the local golf clubs, caddies, brick masons, pin boys who worked at the local bowling alley, in-home nurses, shoe shiners, truck drivers for the ice company, and garbage collectors, fertilizer plant staff and cotton mill workers. In the 1940s, following complaints from white residents living nearby, Fulton County condemned the area. Using eminent domain, eviction and forced negotiation, it began pushing out the residents. By 1952, the Black community was demolished, and a park took its place. Fulton County leaders then honored William Bagley and his family by naming it Bagley Park. In 1980, following the death of beloved Buckhead Baseball umpire and volunteer, Buckhead Baseball and the city of

Atlanta renamed the park in honor of Frankie Allen. The Bagley descendants were not aware of this decision. Buckhead Heritage has steadfastly advocated for the preservation of Mt. Olive Cemetery, which is the only remnant of the once-thriving Black community. In 2010, it filed a successful lawsuit to prevent a developer from removing the cemetery. Buckhead Heritage was later named the official caretaker of the cemetery by the city of Atlanta, and is responsible for its maintenance and upkeep. In 2022, Buckhead Heritage formed a task force to explore restoring the historical name of the park. After reviewing the history of the neighborhood, speaking with Bagley family members and consulting with various stakeholders, it recommended the name Historic Bagley Park, and that the athletic fields be named in honor of Frankie Allen. The Garden Hills Civic Association and Atlanta International School supported the change, and Buckhead Baseball helps financially support the park’s cemetery conservation.
