My relationship with BuckHaven City Lifestyle magazine began just as the first issue was released, nearly 12 years ago. I had relocated to Atlanta from Beverly Hills where I had been living and working as a private chef. I was fresh and the magazine was new - it was to be the beginning of a great love affair. I brought a simple but tasty lunch to the publisher’s house. As we began to get to know each other, we saw how our new relationship could benefit not only us, but our fair city as well. We all knew that we were on to something very special. Over the years, BuckHaven City Lifestyle and I have partnered together to bring awareness to countless non-profits in Atlanta and to raise critical funds in support of organizations like Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA), Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, EDIN, Georgia Lawyers for the Arts, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Les Dames d’Escoffier International - Atlanta Chapter, ADL, and Polo in the Pines, just to name a few. I have written about important projects and used the magazines as a platform to enrich the lives of many. From young Caroline Brewer to the women of GOCA, BuckHaven has stood by my side amplifying my voice and helping me to help others. Together, our impressive partnership has touched hundreds of thousands of readers with stories of survival and loss, opportunity and enterprise - each story helping to illuminate a worthy cause not only near and dear to me, but also to you, our valued readers. There have been countless articles and photoshoots, as well as hundreds of pages of stories dedicated to the giving community and helping to inspire people to give. Within the pages of this book, I have found my inspiration and the drive to evolve not only as an entrepreneur, but also as a philanthropist and writer. Over the years, I have been a writer, lifestyle editor, travel editor, and now, finally, the guest editor of this, the annual giving issue of BuckHaven City Lifestyle. Even though the magazine and I have a long storied history together I feel as if we are just getting started. Thank you, Jim, Sue, and Karyn. and create a sense of belonging amongst the families living in the town. “Pintando Santa Catarina Palopó” (Painting Santa Catarina Palopó) is not just a community art project; it has evolved into a dynamic nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the culture, history, and artistic spirit of the town. With the support of local volunteers and artists, “Pintando Santa Catarina Palopó” began its journey as a non-profit organization. The mission: to use art and color as a tool for education, cultural preservation, community and economic development and to enrich the lives of the people living in the town. To date, the initiative has painted 815 houses, an early childhood education project, and a community garden. What was once a community of grey concrete homes has been lifted through the use of vibrant ancestral colors and historical Mayan symbols that tell the stories of its people. As the organization grew, it initiated projects to restore and maintain the town’s cultural heritage. Murals that told the stories of Santa Catarina Palopó’s rich history were painted on

Santa Catarina Palopó, home to 850 families, is one of the smallest towns skirting Lake Atitlán and is arguably one of the most picturesque areas of Guatemala. The lake is surrounded by three giant volcanos and many hills which offer some of Guatemala’s most dramatic and awesome views. It is a land of stunning beauty, rich cultural heritage, and people as colorful as the fabrics that adorn the women of this ever-welcoming Central American nation. It is also a community of coffee and onion farmers, fishermen, and artisans who have embraced the idea of lifting their communities and each other through art and color. In 2016, Claudia Bosch, owner of Casa Palopó, a Relais & Chateaux property perched on the edge of Lake Atitlán, along with other local entrepreneurs, including Santa Catarina Palopó native and CNN reporter Harris Whitbeck, saw the possibility of creating a project that would develop Santa Catarina Palopó through tourism

the newly bright blue and purple walls of buildings and homes using pink, green, orange, yellow, and red celebrating the town’s vibrant past and its link to the Mayan culture. “Pintando Santa Catarina Palopó” had transcended its origins as a painting project and became a living, breathing testament to the profound impact that art and community-driven initiatives can have in the world. It is a delicious reminder that with creativity, dedication, and a shared vision, even the smallest of towns can bloom into a vibrant tapestry of culture, art, and hope.

Serving on a board of directors and being of service to a non-profit organization and its community is perhaps one of the most rewarding accomplishments that a person can have. Having a passion for a cause and the drive to make a difference in our world is all that you need for success. While Joel Neuman, the current chair of ADL Southeast, and Lauren Estrin, the incoming chair, have completely different stories, their passion for the mission of ADL is the same. The role of the board chair for any organization is to rally the board members, assist the professional staff, and to facilitate their success. For ADL, the work involves fundraising, volunteering on committees that help to set the direction for the organization, and making connections with other community organizations to create allies in the fight against antisemitism, extremism, and hate. Joel’s connection to ADL began in 2017 and it is uniquely personal. His grandfather came to the U.S. as a teenager in the early 1920s to escape his experiences with antisemitism in his homeland. “I view my involvement with ADL as a means of ensuring that his experiences are not repeated by my children or grandchildren,” says Joel. “Justice for one cannot be guaranteed until justice for all is secured.” Joel accepted the chair position in 2022 and will continue his dedication to ADL for the next two years as immediate past chair of the organization. Joel takes pride in having been able to look out over the large crowds that have gathered over the

past two years as ADL honored Steve Koonin and the Atlanta Hawks, as well as Ed Bastian and Delta Air Lines, both of whom have been exceptional in raising their voices in support of justice and respect for all. Lauren, whose four grandparents were all Holocaust survivors, became aware and involved with ADL when she was nominated by legendary Atlanta lawyer, Miles Alexander, for the ADL Glass Leadership Institute. This year-long deep dive for young leaders to learn about the various parts of ADL’s mission was the catalyst for her powerful relationship with the organization. “I am very excited about being involved with our annual fundraiser, the Torch of Liberty Celebration,” says Lauren. “I am looking forward to bringing in new leaders and sharing ADL’s work with the community and corporate partners.” Lauren admits, “I’m excited to continue expanding our core initiatives like No Place for Hate that is currently providing an anti-bullying, allyship program in over 200 schools in the greater Atlanta area.” Past board chairs and members of the community have been supportive and encouraging of Lauren’s upcoming role with ADL and she is ready to take on this new challenge. For both Joel and Lauren, accepting the position as ADL Southeast board chair has been a pivotal moment in their respective careers and in their personal lives. They have been enriched by their service and they will continue to work together to change the future of ADL – Southeast.

The Gift Horse ZORRO’S CROSSING HORSE SANCTUARY

For Jennifer Astrop, interior designer, co-founder of Buckhead’s Minotti by HA Modern, and the founder of Zorro’s Crossing Horse Sanctuary, there is no more profound a connection than that between a human and a horse. “I have always been an animal lover and have had a special place in my heart for horses since I was a girl,” says Jennifer. “I took riding lessons beginning at age 5 and rode horses at summer camp.”

with Sue Soha, who originally taught Alex on Zorro,” says Jennifer. “Our goal is to expand this program with more horses and riders so that hippotherapy is readily accessible to all of those who need it.” Zorro’s Crossing Horse Sanctuary is a nationally recognized 501(c)3 where funds raised are designated to the care of their current and future rescued horses and to further establish and develop their hippotherapy program. It is currently the forever home to ten beautiful horses who have acres of green pastures and farmland to roam and call home. “We love our horses unconditionally and keep them safe from harm for the rest of their lives,” says Jennifer. When not working in the showroom at Minotti, Jennifer can be found working with Zorro’s Crossing. She tries to involve her family as much as possible with the sanctuary and the horses. She says, “I think it is therapeutic for our entire family to work with the horses.”

Jennifer met Zorro, the namesake of her 68-acre horse sanctuary in Chattahoochee Hills, when her son Alex began hippotherapy after he became sick at age 6. Hippotherapy or equine-assisted therapy involves physical, occupational, and speech therapy using the natural movements of the horse to provide motor and sensory input for children with special needs. Zorro had a huge, positive impact on Alex and on Jennifer herself. Their shared experience would change both of their lives forever. Jennifer founded Zorro’s Crossing after her son had sessions with Zorro as a hippotherapy horse. When he was going to be retired, the Astrop family adopted Zorro and in doing so, realized many more horses needed a sanctuary to live out their senior and retired years. “Zorro’s Crossing provides permanent homes for horses cast aside primarily by the racing industry,” says Jennifer. “We rescue, rehabilitate, and give our horses a forever home.” Rescued racehorses, saved from uncertain futures, undergo a profound transformation as they embark on a new career as therapy horses. The transition involves more than just a change of geographical location; it represents a shift from the world of competition to one of compassion and healing. Racehorses are highly sensitive and in tune with their surroundings. Horses can sense the emotions and needs of their human companions, making them ideal partners in therapy for children and adults with special learning, physical, or emotional needs. The magic of rescued racehorses in the therapy environment lies in the intense connection they forge with their human counterparts. Through gentle interactions and therapeutic activities, the horse and the rider develop a beautiful trust. They, as horse and rider, build confidence, learn to communicate effectively, set boundaries, and develop emotional awareness. “We have just launched Wonder, our hippotherapy program

Kenny and Sharon Sonenshine will be honored at the 33rd annual Torch Gala as Volunteers of the Year for their work to raise funds for and awareness of IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. “Crohn’s disease can be so emotional,” says Kenny. “When my son Stephen was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease as a freshman in college, it was a blow to our family. Years later, Stephen’s son Dylan was diagnosed at age seven. Steven explains, “My family is the reason that I ultimately got involved with Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation.” “After marrying Kenny and becoming a member of his family, I learned of Stephen’s struggle with Crohn’s disease,” says Sharon. “I had known no one with Crohn’s and didn’t know too much about it. As years passed and our grandson Dylan started

to show signs of the disease, our family realized the impact this disease would have on us. Kenny and I both took this as a challenge to help fight this terrible disease.” Since 2015, Kenny has chaired the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s annual golf classic and has served as a board member for the Georgia chapter of the foundation. Sharon works countless hours behind the scenes on the golf tournament, spearheading everything from the banquet to the set-up of the event each year. The Torch Gala is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s Georgia Chapter. It is being held on November 4 at 6:30 p.m., at the Intercontinental Buckhead Atlanta. Stewardship of the environment is one of Springmont’s core values. This year, they have upped composting efforts by joining CompostNow, an industrial composting organization, allowing them to compost many more items, including paper towels, meat, compostable tableware, cooked foods, and even half-eaten sandwiches! The program is projected to reduce what they send to the landfill by up to 60 percent. Students empty classroom and common area indoor bins into larger outdoor bins daily and move these rolling bins to the curb for weekly pick-up. Springmont receives monthly updates about how much is diverted from the landfill, and the soil is delivered back to the school. The program is supervised by outdoor science education teacher Michelle Wolfersberger, who teaches students about environmental issues and helps them care for their gardens and farm animals.
