My brothers are my rocks. My sister is my anchor. Our dad "Spud" passed in 1999 from nasty mesothelioma and at his memorial service in Charlotte, we stood around the piano and sang a medley of his favorite songs. How we got through that without drowning in an ocean of tears is nothing short of a miracle. We looked at one another in the eyes, held on tight and smiled. That much has not changed. He was an enthusiastic and energetic piano player at family reunions, church potlucks, Rotary sing-alongs and parties. One snowy morning years ago, he got a call from a friend whose daughter was getting married and just had the band cancel because of icy roads. Spud grabbed a tie, slipped behind the wheel of our station wagon and made his way to the reception. The bride was a friend of mine and hugged me at a recent high school reunion, thankful for dad's can-do attitude and piano prowess. Now, I see (and hear) my dad in my brothers and it's a joy. They share the same saunter. His laugh lives on in them and I hear his booming baritone when they sing. And, that's often. I feel dad with me when I sail on Lake Michigan, hike the trails behind the cottage where we spent summers and whenever I feel low. "Come on, sis, let's go!" I'm so very blessed to be surrounded by siblings who love unconditionally, celebrate often through song and laughter and hold one another up. Just like dad. Enjoy this issue dedicated to men. Happy Father's Day, friends!

A few years ago, Stephen Dunbar and his family moved to Atlanta and soon learned about the realities of sex trafficking that plague the city. Upon being introduced to Wellspring Living, they immediately jumped in and got involved in the mission of raising awareness. Since 2018, both Stephen and his wife Jamie have served in various capacities, including seats on the board of directors. In 2020, with his passion for fitness, Stephen and his son, Gordon, completed their fundraiser, 50 For Freedom – a 50 mile run on the Silver Comet Trail. Their efforts raised over $7,000 for Wellspring Living.

As the General Manager of the Southeast's luxury leader in shopping, Phipps Plaza, Eric Howard is always looking for ways to expand its iconic status. Tuning into Atlanta’s Next Generation of Classical Musicians ARTICLE BY LUCY CROSSWELL

Since 2001, Franklin Pond Chamber Music, in collaboration with the ASYO, has coached and inspired young musicians by providing the highest qualit y music education possible, helping raise up the next generation of professional orchestra members, and providing hope for classical music for generations to come. Meet Jonathan Fuller, 18, one of America’s global music ambassadors. Buckhead music lovers have ample opportunities to see Fuller and other gifted musicians close to home. In Franklin Pond’s lively open master classes at Peachtree Road Methodist and Peachtree Presbyterian Churches, ensembles like Fuller’s Apollo Quintet are coached before a live audience by world-renowned musicians including the nine-time Grammy-winning Emerson Quartet. Inspired by his musical mother, Fuller began playing the cello at age 4 and never considered another instrument or direction. Now at age 18, Fuller is one step closer to his goal of becoming a

professional musician. In July, he returns for his second tour as a cellist in the esteemed National Youth Orchestra. The highly selective program trains about 100 of America’s most talented musicians and travels to global musical capitals, including New York, Amsterdam, Berlin, and Lucerne. Fuller is just one of 12 cellists nationwide and one of four Georgians selected. In addition to his local training with Franklin Pond, Fuller is the principal chair of the Emory Youth Symphony Orchestra and plays with the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra Chamber Players. When he’s not center stage, he is often at the skatepark, reading or performing at retirement homes and churches. While Fuller’s talents are unparalleled, he exudes great optimism for all classical student musicians. “I think the future of classical music is very secure,” said Fuller. “I see firsthand how many passionate young musicians there are, and I know many will devote their lives to this art.” FranklinPond.org

MODERN DAY RENAISSANCE MAN PHIL ARMIJO TAKES THE CITY BY STORM FROM ALL ANGLES

This summer, Buckhead actor Phil Armijo will co-star in Class of 09, the highly anticipated FX Series alongside Brian Tyree Henry and Kate Mara. It’s his most significant role to date, and his character, an FBI agent from the past, will appear in all eight episodes. He will also co-star, in episode 22 of the final season of The Walking Dead, a role that has been a goal since the show first aired. For Armijo, these career milestones motivate him to work harder. But there is much more than acting to this man-on-the-rise. In addition, he is a cinematographer, a mixologist, a high school track coach, a mentor, an artist, and a soon-to-be pilot. In essence, this 42-year-old bachelor is a modern-day Renaissance Man who embraces and excels at a diverse list of talents. Phil Armijo found his passion for acting during his time as a three-sport athlete in college. After graduation, he studied along side of the Florida State Film school, where he got his first big break, working with David Carrodean as the 2nd AD on his first feature film. In 2014, with the acting bug still in his heart, he migrated to the burgeoning Atlanta film scene with 25 of his fellow artists, all looking to make their mark in the Hollywood of the South. Fast forward eight years and Phil, born in Wyoming, along with his acting friends from Florida, have all found success in their niches in the industry.

Even with a packed schedule, Phil never misses a chance to give back. In addition to volunteering with organizations like Books for Africa and Lost & Found Youth, he and his Florida acting friends have found a way to give back. They created an informal group called My Friends and Me, that distributes essentials to the homeless around the city. My Friends and Me has gained a healthy following and support, especially within the film community, through word of mouth and social media. Phil finds this community work to be an essential part of staying humble and centered. And with his best friends and fellow actors as neighbors, he can’t imagine a place he would rather live. “We are family. We all support and root for each other,” Phil says, “even if we are up for the same roles.” But it’s Phil’s complexity, a knack for learning new skills, and an artistic eye that set him apart from the rest. And he is diligent about taking care of his mental and physical health. Most days, he wakes up early, hits the gym, takes his vitamins, and starts his workday. At night, he winds down with a book. Currently, he is reading and loving a book penned by Albert Einstein. “I am a firm believer that you get out of life what you put into it.” he says. And for Phil, this shows.

JOHN AND KORI FORD SHARE THEIR STORY AND SUPPORT GOGA AT THE JUNE 12 VIRTUAL GALA.

John Ford and his wife Kori are both anesthesiologists. While they recognized something was wrong, the young couple did not think that Kori could have pelvic cancer given the fact that they recently had two children. Everyone’s story is different and no two cancer journeys are the same. “Kori was stoic and did not show much emotion,” says John of their first visit to the radiation oncologist. “We both drove home after our appointment. When I pulled in the driveway I found her sobbing in her car.” Both John and Kori had read a study involving a small group of women with the same diagnosis and despite aggressive treatment, none of the women in the study were alive after two years. “I felt hopeless and terrified. I gave her a long hug, but we did not say much.”

John admits that while there were parts of their journey that he remembers vividly, there are other parts that he has blocked out. Visits to the ICU and ER, inpatient hospitalizations, and chemo sessions were frequent, but after every treatment day the couple did something with their children to make it all seems a little more normal. Whether it was a trip to the beach, the zoo, or to the children’s museum - the family was always together. The Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA) sent Kori a Bag of Hope when she was first diagnosed. Recently Kori and her daughter participated in the Teal Trot and met women who were dealing with a similar diagnosis and others who were walking to make a difference in the lives of ovarian cancer patients. The entire family has been involved with GOCA ever since. John’s advice might sound a little cliché, but it is heartfelt. “The journey is not easy, but you can do it.” As with everything in life, it is important to focus on little victories and “try to instill normalcy in your life.” For John and Kori, it was most important for them to be vulnerable and to allow friends and family to help along the journey. The couple recently hosted friends and family to celebrate two years of remission. GOCA continues to touch the lives of women and their families across our state through awareness and education programs such as Teal to Heal, the annual fashion show hosted by Tootsie’s of Buckhead and The Teal Trot annual charity walk at Chastain Park. For the third year in a row GOCA as opted for a virtual Shaken, Not Stirred charity fundraising broadcast. This year’s broadcast is being held on June 12 starting at 6:55 p.m. The one-hour broadcast features educational and informative content about the organization and highlights members of their community and ways to support the ongoing Bag of Hope program. Wayne Parks and his wife Helen own Archadeck Outdoor Living of Roswell-Buckhead. It’s his job (and pleasure) to design and build beautiful outdoor spaces. Business is healthy and luckily, Wayne and Helen have a team to help them grow. Besides the professionals at Archadeck, the Parks credit their kids for providing boatloads of support by sharing their time and creativity to help the business grow. They have three daughters and two sons-in-law who live in Roswell and East Cove, along with four grandsons. “The sons-in-law have jobs at Mercedes Benz U.S. in Sandy Springs and Kodak and while they don’t work directly in the business as employees, they are eventually benefactors of the inheritance of the business ownership for our company and franchise,” says Wayne. “They have directly assisted in the business on weekends on occasion as labor for a pergola installation, under-decking installation, and a three-season room window installation. They also helped with a donated patio that we made for a military museum in Fort Oglethorpe. Three of the grandsons also helped with that project,” says Wayne proudly. We asked Wayne what he’s excited about at Archadeck this summer. “Here in Georgia, we spend as much time outside as we do inside. Your outside space is an extension of your everyday living space. Do you have kids who need space to run? Do you entertain and eat outside? Because a picnic table needs a different deck than a lounge or play area. Mixing decking, hardscapes, and green space can really define a space.
