LIFESTYLE LETTER

A letter from the west. Our fellow publisher of Boulder City Lifestyle magazine lost his home in The Marshall Fire. We dedicate this issue to Andy, Kate and their family and we are honored to share his letter here. For thousands of Boulder County residents, darkness was felt with unrelenting force on December 30th. The Marshall Fire unleashed widespread devastation, but the resolve of our community proved to be far too strong for defeat. For those of us who were around for the flood of 2013, we really shouldn’t be surprised, should we? From the immediate response by neighbors calling neighbors, making sure they were out of their homes, to the firefighters who risked their lives, all the way to the local, state and federal government agencies—it was truly incredible how quickly everyone mobilized. There are so many heroes who have emerged from the Marshall Fire, many that we will know, and many that we will never know. I will be the first to admit that over the last two years, it has been easy to see the glass “half empty,” regarding many parts of society. Yet, while our country may be divided on many topics, the response to these recent events proves that the community of Boulder County is stronger than ever. My biggest takeaway from this experience is that no matter what your political stance, or what kind of car you drive, or what school your kids go to or if you compost or not, there is still an immense amount of love in humankind. I trust that this wave of goodwill that we are all riding can continue long after the rubble is removed and new foundations are poured. We would like to dedicate this issue to the firefighters who worked tirelessly, risking their own safety, to fight the Marshall Fire. With all of our love and gratitude,

Is For EXPLORING WHAT LOVE MEANS AT THE HIGH MUSEUM

Art

This month, the High Museum of Art will open What Is Left Unspoken, Love (March 25 - August 14, 2022), an exhibition featuring artworks from the early 1990s through the present that examine the different ways that one of the most powerful forces of life — love — is understood and expressed. Including paintings, sculpture, photography, video and large-scale installations, the exhibition explores concepts of love from the most intimate relationships between two people, through the ties that bind family and friends, to social movements that promote the worth and well-being of community. It also promotes the notion that love is worth analyzing now, particularly as an agent of change and a force for good. More information and tickets are available at High.org.

Regardless of where you live, there is a distinct pride that everybody feels towards their hometown sports teams. Imagine a team of heroes, led by a hero, energizing a diverse city for the betterment of all. Look no further than our own Atlanta Hawks and Steve Koonin of Buckhead. Since being named CEO of the Atlanta Hawks and State Farm Arena, Koonin has been the driving force behind the Atlanta Hawks Foundation and the powerful role that the team plays in our city. With accolades like “Best Overall Game Experience” in the NBA and “Best New Concert Venue in the United States,” Koonin’s organization’s mission to excite and unite the City of Atlanta through Atlanta Hawks basketball is being recognized.

Koonin and the Hawks are being honored this month by the Anti-Defamation League. “The Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) mission is to eliminate hate from the world, which is not only a noble mission, but one that’s needed,” says Koonin of the Atlanta organization. “I see sports as one thing in today’s fractured world that brings people together better than any politician or policy.” Koonin’s motto of “you can’t do wrong by doing right” is a testament to his dedication to our city. “Every time we’re in a situation I think: I’d rather do the right thing than the most popular. The Atlanta Hawks want to do the right thing for this community.” For the Atlanta Hawks and Steve Koonin, these words are the basis for action in so many remarkable ways. “I’m proud that we’re there when we’re needed in ways that are clever, and impactful,” says Koonin. The Atlanta Hawks Foundation has built 28 basketball courts throughout Atlanta. When COVID hit and schools closed, the Atlanta Hawks turned the basketball courts into pop up grocery stores, providing those neighborhoods with food for two weeks. “Those basketball courts that we built for play, were literally the food insecurity solution for tens of thousands of people in neighborhoods across Atlanta,” said Koonin, “and that’s something that I’m extremely proud of.” “The most important, impactful thing that I think we’ve done - that I’ll probably ever do in my career - is when State Farm Arena was turned into the largest voting and polling place in American history.” These efforts spearheaded a movement across America, and with Steve and the Atlanta Hawks leading the way, over 71 professional sports teams turned their arenas into voting stations. “We’ve been vocal in our support of voting rights and several issues that we feel are causes that affect all people positively,” said Koonin. “We’re bipartisan. Anytime somebody is disadvantaged, or not able to do what they need to do because of a policy, we’re going to be at the opposite end of that issue, utilizing our platform.” The ADL is the world’s largest anti-hate organization, envisioning an “America where those who seem different are not targets of discrimination and threats, but are equals, worthy of shared opportunity and a place in the American dream.” The ADL Southeast is celebrating a reprise of their signature Atlanta fundraiser and are honored to be presenting the Atlanta Hawks and Steve Koonin with the Torch of Liberty Award in honor of their work to make Atlanta as good as it can be for everyone! Join with ADL Southeast as they gather to celebrate the Atlanta Hawks and Steve Koonin on March 31 at City Winery. Epicurean Hotel rises above the Midtown landscape

HOM E AWAY F ROM HOME

In our food kingdom, Midtown is contributing to the charge in redefining Atlanta’s culinary scene. The newest jewel in Midtown’s crown is the long-awaited and eagerly anticipated Epicurean Hotel. Rising amongst the dynamic urban cityscape of Midtown, Epicurean Hotel is a hotel like no other. Conceptually different from any other typical hotel, Epicurean’s unique food and wine concept, as well as exquisite design, modern architecture, and incredible guest experience, make it our choice this month for your celebratory staycation and culinary adventure. As one of the only dedicated food and wine destination hotel experiences in the country, Atlanta’s own Epicurean Hotel superbly delivers three incredible dining experiences. Each restaurant is well designed and impeccably appointed. Reverence, with its futuristic ambiance, is the hotel’s signature restaurant. It is hyper locally focused with an open-concept kitchen and a delightful, globally inspired menu. The stellar wine list of over 136 varietals also boasts more than 26 wine-by-the-glass options and has a wonderful focus on single-vineyard pinot noirs. Aerial Kitchen & Bar, a South American and Mexican-influenced outdoor dining destination, is located on the 9th-floor terrace rooftop. As if floating in a sea of high-rises, this park-like, plein air oasis is simply otherworldly. Last, but nowhere least, The Office Bar is a homage to the hustle and bustle of Midtown. It’s the new sanctuary for everyone seeking a glamorous respite from the chaos of business life. Oh, and please don’t forget the bourbon. The Office Bar offers one of the CONTINUED >

finest bourbon selections that Atlanta has to offer. With these three unique and innovative dining concepts, you won’t need to leave the property. The most novel and exciting addition to the Atlanta culinary landscape, and the piéce de résistance of the hotel, is the Epicurean Theatre. A state-of-the-art kitchen theatre designed in partnership with Sub-Zero and Wolf offers guests the opportunity to sip, swirl, stir, and sauté alongside award winning chefs, mixologists, and globally renowned winemakers. A kitchen classroom like none other, Epicurean Theatre gives Atlantans an opportunity to explore our own culinary prowess while rubbing shoulders with the industry’s best. You can only imagine that with Google as a neighbor, the hotel is brimming with the latest innovative technologies. Guest rooms are artfully decorated and well-appointed with eclectic furnishings, curated art, and breathtaking views of Atlanta’s forever-changing skyline. If the occasion of your staycation is special enough, upgrade to the Vice-Presidential or the Presidential Suite. You can thank me later! Starting with the welcoming experience, everything has been done right. Everything is perfect, right down to the hyper-curated in-room snack offerings! Epicurean Hotel needs to be on every gourmet’s bucket list. And, with their “what inspires you, impassions us” attitude, it’s no wonder that it is the obvious favorite of many global, as well as neighborly, culinary aficionados. EpicureanHotelAtlanta.com
