LIFESTYLE LETTER

Happy New Year, Friends Do you love our new cover design as much as we do? Our parent company Lifestyle Publications is now City Lifestyle. So, you'll see Buckhaven City Lifestyle magazine gracing your mailboxes from now on! While print continues to drive our business, our digital platform at CityLifestyle.com is flourishing. Just see how we've grown. This cover from 2015 celebrates three years of publishing, with an engaging collage of covers through the years. Recognize any favorites? And, you knew I was going to ask about your resolutions! I mean, it's a new year and this is amnesty month. We can forget about last year's lost opportunities and snafus and jump into a fresh new year, a wide-open frontier. I'm perfectly happy to lose last year's baggage and start a healthier new year, chock full of hopes and dreams. Our book editor, Rhiannon Johnson, suggested two good books to give (or receive) this month to help. Rhiannon has been writing for us for nearly a decade. (Did you know this year we are celebrating 10 years of publishing? More on that soon!) I Didn't Do the Thing Today, Letting Go of Productivity Guilt by Madeleine Dore is the inspiring call to take productivity off its pedestal. We love that! She says that by dismantling our comparison to others, aspirational routines, and the unrealistic notions of what can be done in a day, we can finally embrace the joyful messiness and unpredictability of life. I'll have what she's having! Enjoy this issue, find inspiration and let me know what you think of the new page designs!

I Didn’t Do the Thing Today: Letting Go of Productivity Guilt by Madeleine Dore Do you struggle to complete a never-ending daily list of tasks? Wondering how other people seemed to have it all figured out, Madeleine Dore spent five years interviewing people she admired to uncover their secrets for being more productive, successful, and prolific. She learned there isn’t a perfect recipe for getting things done. The ideal routine that maximizes every minute of the day is a myth, and constantly holding ourselves to unattainable daily standards is simply exhausting us. Dore encourages us to stop comparing ourselves to others, to become more realistic about our expectations, and overcome our constant worry about wasted time. Letting go of your productivity guilt and embracing the unexpected creative moments that each day brings can broaden your definition of a day well spent, bringing deep connection and fulfillment.

Postcards: The Rise and Fall of the World’s First Social Network by Lydia Pyne In 1909 the United States Post Office was $17 million in debt ($483 million today). Two years later, the Post Office’s profit was $200,000 ($5.7 million today.) How? Postcards! The hundreds of millions of postcards Americans were sending during the Golden Age of Postcards (1905-1920) became a lifeline for the Post Office. Lydia Pyne takes readers on a global journey through revolutions, social movements, scientific and technological discoveries, and sentimental personal connections. This book also examines the details of postcards as the first worldwide social network. Postcards is a marvelous, in-depth analysis and thought-generating look into how a version of almost everything you see on your current digital social media networks was first produced, composed, and mailed as a postcard.

We just love the vibe of Buckhead's newest sweet spot. Le Bon Nosh is a new café & market located at The Irby in Buckhead, serving simple, ingredient-driven food that celebrates the beauty of eating with the seasons. With a name that roughly translates to "the good bite", founder Forough Vakili’s welcoming atmosphere, designed by Commune, and vegetable-forward menu celebrates the simplicity of good food and warm hospitality. Later this year, Le Bon Nosh will launch a program to address food insecurity in the greater Atlanta community. Floor-to-ceiling windows fill the market with natural light by day, while chandeliers and sconces by Woka create a casually elegant space by night. Design touches reflect Forough’s Persian heritage throughout, including naturally-dyed saffron velvet drapes

and layered handwoven rugs. A staircase leads to a secret mezzanine, serving as a private dining space with features like hand-painted wallpaper, built-in furniture with walnut accents, and a constellation of Michael Anastassiades' light fixtures with star signs for Forough’s two children hidden above. The all-day menu champions the beauty of simple, seasonal food, with rotating breakfast items like almond butter toast, beet cured salmon, and shakshuka along with an ingredient-driven selection of salads, soups, tartines and galettes for lunch. From the pastry case, seasonal scones, muffins, hand pies and tarts line the shelves, while modern classics from the grab & go case prioritize guest convenience. To drink, the wine list highlights organic and natural wines, alongside a selection of craft beer, tea and single-origin coffee.

“I’d like to encourage folks not to let the enormity of the issues stand in the way of doing something - anything.”

22

O UR TOWN | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S

Founded in 1965 to support seniors struggling with poverty, food insecurity and social isolation, Meals on Wheels Atlanta (MOWA) has evolved over the years to become one of the most formidable organizations dedicated to eliminating senior food insecurity and ending hunger in the Southeast. In addition to preparing and delivering more than 600,000 meals a year in Atlanta, MOWA established a home repair program that offers critical support to seniors and veterans, enabling them to maintain their independence; and an emergency food and pet food pantry. MOWA’s commitment to supporting seniors and veterans, which allows them to live a healthier and more nourished life in their own homes, is the main mission of the organization. As MOWA continues to strengthen its commitment to Atlanta’s senior and veteran populations, its need for amazing volunteers to fulfill their mission will continue to grow as well. For George Calfo, a new volunteer at MOWA, volunteerism has always been a way of life. “I’ve been very fortunate in my life, and with that good fortune I feel a strong responsibility to my fellow human beings who haven’t been as lucky.” Food line coverage during the pandemic was particularly heartbreaking for George. “In many ways it was hard not to see oneself in those lines.” George and other members of his men’s group at the Buckhead Church decided to zero in on MOWA. MOWA was one of the only food related organizations that was still accepting in-person volunteers in Atlanta at the time. Since then, George has been giving about three hours every Saturday morning to MOWA and is involved in the final steps of getting the meals into the delivery cars and on their way to recipients. “Super Saturday Meal Delivery is manual labor. It requires someone to show up early and be consistent, regardless of weather,” says George. “I basically will do whatever the staff needs. It is a fun group of equally committed folks from all different walks of life, which I really enjoy.” Currently the need for volunteers across the country is great. Anyone who can spare some time or talent can have a huge impact on the lives of people everywhere. “I’d like to encourage folks not to let the enormity of the issues stand in the way of doing something - anything,” says George. “It’ll make our community better, and for me it’s made my life far richer." George’s "just do it attitude" is contagious. “It’s needed,” says George, “and it’s crazy how much more rewarding contributing is versus receiving. Plus, you’ll meet some really cool people!” George and his wife Emily recently gifted another volunteer at MOWA two tickets to their annual fundraiser, Savor: A Meal to Remember, as a way of strengthening their personal commitment not only to the organization, but to everyone who gives back to MOWA. “I would like to say that there are many wonderful MOWA staff and volunteers doing amazing work, I just happen to be one of many,” says George of his volunteerism. There are many ways to support MOWA throughout the year, including upcoming fundraising events such as TASTE. This inaugural fundraiser is being held at Chattahoochee Works on February 18, 2022. Guests will gather to enjoy a curated menu featuring tastes from over twenty food hall chefs and businesses. To learn more about MOWA and TASTE or to learn more about volunteering and ways to contribute, please visit MOWAtl.org

Why Juice Bars Are Here to Stay ARTICLE BY LISA MARTINEZ PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

As with most trends, the idea of juicing began when we started seeing celebrities pictured with green drinks on their daily commute to somewhere that must be fabulous. What was that drink and how can I get one? Turns out, the next health trend was the start of juicing: squeezing the pulp out of fruits and vegetables and drinking the juice. This was initially to help those celebs with busy schedules get more vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables while on-the-go, and (of course) lose weight. Juice bars sprang up all over the country and thus the juice trend was created. Many who jumped on the juice train did so swiftly and without much regard to the ‘what or why,’ It didn’t matter what the juice looked or tasted like. In fact, if it didn’t taste good, it must be better for you.

Research shows that much of our overall health can be largely attributed to the health of our gut microbiome (gut health), the ability to resist infection and remove toxins from our bodies (immunity), and the internal strength to repair cells and tissues (protein intake).

The evidence to support eating more fruits and vegetables is solid. Research shows that much of our overall health can be largely attributed to the health of our gut microbiome (gut health), the ability to resist infection and remove toxins from our bodies (immunity), and the internal strength to repair cells and tissues (protein intake). Sounds like a lot, but the answer is simple: increase your fruits and vegetables. But how? We are a nation of busy people that barely have time to sit down and eat a meal (a conversation for another day), much less concern ourselves with the overall nutritional content. This is where juices and smoothies can be a great solution when combined with an overall healthier diet. Gut Health - Starting your day with something fresh and nutrient-rich can brighten your mood and begin the daily process to a healthier gut. The key is to keep the sugar content low. Even though fruits and vegetables like beets, carrot and apples have amazing nutritional properties, they have a high sugar content. They should be

26

EAT R IGH T | FOOD + BEVE RAGE

consumed, but in moderation. So think about green vegetables (celery, spinach, kale, and cucumber) and mix them together with small amounts of those sweeter fruits and vegetables like carrots, beets, apples, and pineapple. Then add a touch of refreshing ginger and lemon to help with inflammation, risk of infection, to inhibit the grown of bacteria, and much more. Immunity - To help your body fight infection and keep it young, this is where some of those sweeter vegetables take center stage. Beets, oranges, apples, and carrots are packed with nutrition, like vitamin A, B6, C, potassium and folic acid that helps strengthen our heart, support blood pressure, maintain good brain function, and give us natural bursts of energy. Great for athletes and the afternoon pick me up! Protein Boost - If more protein for sustained energy is your goal (like a meal replacement), adding a small scoop of a plant-based protein powder will help fill you up until you are ready for that dinner that includes a lean healthy protein and raw or roasted vegetables.

STAYING FUELED: Almonds are my go-to breakfast or snack! While this might not be the healthiest choice, if I need a pick-me-up, I love a non-fat latte in the morning or a Diet Coke in the afternoon. MEETING NEW PATIENTS: I love getting to know my patients, and the conversation certainly varies based on their personalities. I generally start out, though, by asking where they’re from and asking them to tell me a bit about themselves and their lifestyles like their significant other, kids, and pets. This helps me get to know them and build a relationship of trust but it also helps me understand my patient’s lifestyle so I can create a treatment plan that will fit into their life.

NEW IN 2022: The pandemic has put new technologies and tools on the backburner for aspects of healthcare that aren’t COVID-19-related, but I’m looking forward to getting the progress moving again and attending more conferences and educational events this year. I’m excited to see what’s on the horizon skin tightening and skin rejuvenation and to learn more about continued medicine and laser technology for skin issues. I’m always trying new and exciting things for hair restoration as well, so I hope to find even more treatment options to help my patients in the year ahead. MEETING NEW PATIENTS: We chat and I ask when was the last time when you felt good? How is your illness impacting your life and your energy? Naturally enhancing your beauty, rehabbing your skin from within by balancing hormones, vitamins, gut-liver health and using intelligent, noninvasive yet powerful facial devices is the way to go!
