As a fly fisher, I find peace on the river so it's easy (and an honor) to support a group providing recovering addicts with access to the sport that brings joy and healing to so many. Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to more than 80 percent since the hospital opened more than 50 years ago. American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities (ALSAC) was founded by Danny Thomas in 1957 to be the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Atlanta chapter is a powerhouse. Tracye Hutchins and Monica Pearson are two of the most recognizable news personalities in Atlanta, and the newly minted Atlanta News First Network is certainly letting them lead by example. Both of these women’s legacy is entrenched in generosity, helping others, and challenging us all to do better, each and every day. The old adage, “To whom much is given, much is required”, is a motto that Monica Pearson’s mother Hattie Edmondson instilled in her at a very young age. “Monnie,” said her mother, “you must reach back, pull up and push forward others.” Monica has impacted the lives of countless here in Atlanta over the years and she has become a big believer in “look around you, see where there is a need and offer your expertise.” For Tracye, her motto is more of a challenge to herself and to others, “I know it’s hard to find time to give back, but once you start, those who you’ve helped are so appreciative. You really start to wonder, why haven’t I always done this?” And while, “there is always a sense of immediate goodness, seeing the smiles of those that you have helped is the big payoff.” Being in the public eye, both Tracye and Monica have many opportunities to support our community. As a news anchor, Tracye believes that she has, “a responsibility to bring attention to our non-profits who do so much to make life better for so many in Metro Atlanta.” Atlanta News First has many well-established community programs. “We are part of a large project that supplies books to students in communities of need,” says Tracye. “When I get a hug from the kids. When they open their own book bags and see books that they can take home and read, it means everything.” For Monica, she again remembers her mother’s sage advice: “Our talents - what we’re good at - are gifts that are meant to be given away and not hoarded.” Meals on Wheels Atlanta (MOWA) is one of Monica’s favorite organizations in Atlanta. “My mother loved MOWA because of the people who made the deliveries. They didn’t just deliver food, they delivered companionship.” Hattie wanted her independence. That was a driving force for Monica that, “led to me becoming a board member at MOWA and a financial contributor.” It seems like we could all learn a little about how to live a dedicated life of service from both of these incredible women. Isn’t it time we all found a way to give back. After all, aren’t we all in this together? CONTINUED >

Approximately 400 guests attended the event, which included an immersive experience that visualized the history and global strides taken by St. Jude, cocktail hour, dinner, live and silent auctions and remarks by a St. Jude patient family and Kera Wright, CFO of ALSAC (the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude). In recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® hosted an in-person St. Jude Walk/Run at The Battery. More than 1,500 Atlanta-area supporters joined forces to run or walk a 5K while raising crucial funds to advance research and treatment by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This year’s event raised more than $324,000. “For more than a decade, people across the country have united for the St. Jude Walk/Run to help St. Jude families. Every mile walked brings us one step closer to ending childhood cancer,” says Richard C. DA N Y E L S TA R R Danyel Starr, the executive director for the Legacy Ridge at Buckhead Assisted Living and Memory Care Community, has resided in the Atlanta area for more than 20 years and has served faithfully on various philanthropic committees. Her main passion is pioneering the way we take care of our seniors in Atlanta. Danyel specializes in rejuvenating senior living communities that are struggling to care for their residents appropriately and struggling financially, by turning them around with her caring heart and determination. In addition to making a real difference in seniors’ lives, Danyel has served as a standing board and lifetime member of Roswell Women’s Club since 2008, currently co-chairing the IT Committee. She has served on the Georgia Lawyers for the Arts (GLA) advisory board for many years and applauds what the organization does for Georgia’s artists and inventors. Suzanne considers it a great honor to support artists by providing them with the legal resources needed to protect their work, livelihoods, and ability to continue creating beauty. She is a staunch support of GLA’s one-of-a-kind silent art auction every fall where artists who have received GLA assistance graciously give back by donating their work. It’s not every day you can can own and enjoy a painting and realize that in some small way, you’ve enabled a Georgia artist to drop their cares and keep making art.

Shannon and Burt Wright, owners of hair restoration studio Absolute Image Consulting, understand that living in gratitude is simple after seeing sick children still radiate joy. As experts helping men and women with non-surgical hair loss replacement, the Wrights have also assisted children experiencing illness-related alopecia. They give everyone the same level of service and care, and understand that restoring natural-looking hair means restoring self-confidence, too. Last month the Wrights and Williams Cancer Foundation held their first Phoenix Benefit, which raised $17,000 to continue cancer research, help people receive treatment and recover emotionally. We talked to the Wrights about their unique business and how they’ve remained grounded and grateful.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GIVE BACK TO KIDS IN NEED? We periodically saw children with hair loss for one reason or another, with parents who might have been dealing with a mountain of expenses from medical bills. It only took one time seeing a single mother's heart sink when she heard how expensive it would be, for us to realize we could do more to help her and her little girl. So, we offered our service for free and helped with the cost of the products. When we finally attached her hair, that little girl's eyes got so big and bright, and her mother, aunt and dad were all crying. We realized what this really meant.
HOW DOES GIVING TO OTHERS MAKE YOU FEEL? We both came from very humble beginnings, and it was a struggle to break through. We both know what it means to want and, more importantly, to need something just out of reach. Providing for someone in that same situation is priceless to us.
HOW CAN READERS GET INVOLVED? We just held our inaugural benefit event and saw how generous and caring people can be. That was a great start to something we hope to continue for many years. We plan to hold the next event in early spring 2024. We hope people stay connected and inspired to help. And when they see the announcement for the next event, we hope they will join us.

At the new Atlanta Humane Society home, there are splash yards and walking trails for the dogs, and safely enclosed “catios” for cats. Lighting in the animal areas is set to replicate natural circadian rhythms and offers different light settings to keep stress at a minimum. The Shelter Medicine area will allow extensive medical treatment and care including isolation rooms for parvovirus
and ringworm, a dental suite, and a surgery room. There is a training room for community events, and a kid’s learn and explore area. The new shelter will be open 12 p.m. - 4 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday-Saturday. The Arthur M. Blank Family Animal Center is located at 1551 Perry Boulevard. AtlantaHumane.org
