LIFESTYLE LETTER

NOVEMBER 2021 PUBLISHER

Jim Newman | jnewman@lifestylepubs.com EDITOR

Hello friends, EMILY POST SAYS THE RULE OF THUMB IS THAT YOU SHOULD SEND A WRITTEN NOTE ANY TIME YOU RECEIVE A GIFT (EVEN A ‘THANK YOU’ GIFT) AND THE GIVER WASN’T THERE TO BE THANKED IN PERSON. And, notes are not always necessary. If, for example, the gift is from a close friend or relative (and it’s not a wedding gift) you can email or call instead if you prefer. I know another Emily who would protest this last point. My mother Emily would implore you to always use a pen and paper and I tend to agree (because she was the pillar of politeness and good manners).

This is not going to be an angry “whatever happened to people writing thank you notes” piece. Instead, just a straightforward, cheery reminder to use every opportunity to encourage the people in your world to continue to be nice and do nice things for others. A little positive reinforcement, in this case, a well-timed, hand-written thank you note on carefully chosen stationery goes a long way. Use a thank you note to express yourself, but also to pay homage where it’s due. Acknowledging a gift, a thoughtful favor or someone’s warm hospitality is easy. Just speak from your heart and use a few extra adjectives.

She felt called to help others facing similar uncertainty, and in 2016, she founded Dementia Spotlight Foundation (DSF). Whitney wears many hats at DSF, serving as co-founder, CEO and executive director. She leads employees and volunteers and advocates to ensure all programs meet the Foundation’s goals of providing a “guiding light” for those looking for a path forward. Y O U T H F O O T B A L L'S B E S T Cameron James, Darren Penn and Robert Peterson coach the Raiders in the Bigs League at Northside Youth Organization in Buckhead. They love coaching youth football and being a part of NYO, “Atlanta’s greatest community organization,” they say. This is Robert’s seventh year coaching, working with more than 100 kids. “The opportunity to make a positive influence on a kid’s life while watching him grow not only athletically, but also emotionally and socially, is extremely rewarding. The game of football teaches kids some of life’s greatest lessons, and we really enjoy being a small part of that. It’s a bonus that Cameron, Darren and I have become great friends along the way and we have a blast coaching with one another,” says Robert. “For me, football teaches hard work, teamwork, discipline, comradery, competition, and dealing with adversity, among many other wonderful life lessons. Some of my favorite memories and strongest friendships were developed through the amazing game of football. Our goal each and every year is for the kids to have fun and come back to play the next season,” says Darren. NYOSports.com

BuckHaven Lifestyle | November 2021

INSPIRED BY A BRAVE LITTLE GIRL, ONE BUCKHEAD GALLERY IS SUPPORTING CHILDREN’S HEALTHCARE OF ATLANTA BY BRINGING TOGETHER MORE THAN 50 ARTISTS AND VENDORS FOR A SPECIAL HOLIDAY SHOPPING EXPERIENCE THIS MONTH. In the spirit of the upcoming holiday season, and in support of Atlanta area creatives and small businesses at such a critical time, artist Alice Trahant, together with Katie Jones, owner of Buckhead Art + Company, are hosting the second annual Buckhead Art + Company Holiday Market, November 11-14 in the Buckhead Village District. The pop-up will take place in an empty storefront space next to Le Bilboquet at 3039 Peachtree Road. A percentage of all sales will benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in the name of Pamela Reid, a Buckhead sixth-grader and close family friend who has struggled and overcome pediatric medulloblastoma. Pamela’s story is one of incredible perseverance, courage, and hope. At the age of seven, in September 2017, Pamela was diagnosed with medulloblastoma. After a successful brain tumor resection by Dr. Andrew Reisner and Dr. Baranashish Brahma at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, she recuperated in the hospital for a month while receiving intensive rehabilitation. Pamela

then went on to Boston to receive proton radiation daily for six weeks, and after treatments, returned to Atlanta and began 11 months of chemotherapy at CHOA under the guidance of Dr. Tobey Macdonald. She completed chemotherapy in November 2018 and continues to be healthy and cancer-free. Pamela is motivated to return the kindness she received during treatment. She started Pamela’s Proton Presents in 2019, benefitting the Emory Proton Center in Atlanta. Pamela’s Proton Presents provides Emory radiation patients, and their siblings, age-appropriate gift closets to pick out a present at the end of each week of radiation. Pamela wants other children going through cancer to know they are loved and supported.

INSPIRED BY BEN HIGGINS TALKS COFFEE, HOPE & HUMANITY, AND WHAT IT MEANS TO BE THANKFUL

PROBABLY BEST KNOWN FOR BEING LEAD #20 IN THE BACHELOR, THERE IS SO MUCH MORE TO BEN HIGGINS THAN BEING ONE OF AMERICA’S REALITY TV SWEETHEARTS, SUCH AS HIS DEEP PASSION FOR MAKING MOVES TO “MULTIPLY GOOD IN THE WORLD.” Since his time on The Bachelor, Ben has taken the opportunity to use his fame to create not one, but two inspiring podcasts, publish a successful autobiography, while also elevating awareness of his “for-purpose” Generous Coffee brand. CL: HOW DID GENEROUS COFFEE BEGIN? BH: We launched in January of 2018. When I was 15 years old I went to Central America; our hearts were broken and eyes were opened to the lack of strategy behind non-profit work. My buddy on that trip started a non-profit called Humanity & Hope United Foundation. We ask people within these communities, how can we help? The goal was a partnership to help them increase their education programs, their healthcare, but be led by them. When the show [The Bachelor] happened,

RENOVATE & REFINE ARTICLE TASHA MOODY | PHOTOGRAPHY JOLIE LOREN

A PLACE FOR EVERYONE TASHA MOODY OF IRIS & OAK BELIEVES THE MOST BEGUILING INTERIORS ARE GRACED WITH A BALANCE OF COLOR, TEXTURE AND NATURAL ELEMENTS. When setting the table for us this month, she simply layered neutral woven textiles with clean white artisan-inspired dinnerware, topped off with a cascade of festive gourds and mums available at the grocery store or local nursery. How we can make our Thanksgiving table more meaningful and prettier? Tasha reminds us that hosting a beautiful Thanksgiving is all about being prepared and having a plan. “Without a plan, we can tend to go overboard and be lost at work in the kitchen or
