feeling like foreigners in our own country. We had to get used to huge American grocery stores teeming with fresh produce and shelves full of Oreos and Pop Tarts, things we'd missed while living in Hong Kong and England. The conveniences and abundance were overwhelming here in America. We were wide-eyed for years. At the parade, we watched Girl Scouts wave flags and local politicians smile and strut their stuff. But, when the marching band paused in front of the grandstand and played America The Beautiful, we lost it. My husband teared up but I completely lost all composure and balled, sobbing with an appreciation for being home. I know you appreciate this community and this country and will pause to salute our independence on July 4.

ATLANTA, WILL BE HELD ON JULY 14 AT 5:00 PM AT CENTER PLAZA AT THE SHOPS. This year’s race will be the culmination of an afternoon Bastille Day celebration that will include a summer block party and center-wide attractions from 12:00-6:00 pm. This year’s event will include celebrity chefs from Atlanta on the judges’ panel and give them a chance to take an active role in this unique industry event. The race celebrates the excellence, dedication and discipline of the more than 230,000 food preparers and servers who work in the metro Atlanta restaurant industry and will benefit The Giving Kitchen (TGK). The Waiters’ Race Atlanta offers a Southern version of the 100-year-old Parisian tradition. Participants will navigate through various obstacles with a loaded server’s tray in one hand. After finishing the route, competing waiters and waitresses will open and pour a split of champagne. Contestants will be evaluated on speed, service and style by a group of well-known Atlanta chefs including James Beard Award Winner and Executive Chef, Philippe Haddad. The winner of the race will receive a round-trip ticket to Paris for two and a traveling trophy to be housed in their restaurant for the next 12 months. Before and after the race, The Shops Buckhead Atlanta will host a free summer block party at center plaza that will include live entertainment, outdoor cocktail bars, food tasting stations, a flower cart, children’s games and a bocce court. In addition, The Shops Buckhead Atlanta retailers will be offering exclusive experiences, amenities and promotions during the event.

HOT SPOT

here's to hair WE ASKED THE OWNER OF THE BOARDROOM ABOUT MEN'S HAIR HEALTH.

ARTICLE STAFF | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Q: HOW OFTEN SHOULD A GUY GET A HAIRCUT? A: A good clean-up is recommended once every three weeks. It doesn’t matter if your style is long, short, messy, or polished, you should always look like it was done on purpose. Life is hectic and moves very quickly. It’s a good idea to plan ahead and make time for yourself. Scheduling your next appointment before leaving the salon will ensure you maintain your desired look and gives you something to look forward to. However, walk-ins are welcome, too. Q: HOW CAN GUYS PROTECT THEIR HAIR AND HEADS DURING THE GEORGIA SUMMER HEAT? A: Sunblock is man’s new best friend. A healthy scalp is the key to a healthy head of hair. Just like the skin on your face, your scalp needs protection from those harmful rays and damaging outside elements. A baseball cap won’t always give you the protection that you need. A small amount of your favorite SPF 50 sunblock, massaged directly into the scalp, will offer protection and prevent dryness and irritation. You can then style with your favorite go-to product or throw on your favorite baseball cap and enjoy your day of fun in the sun.

Q: TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR STYLISTS. A: Boardroom employees are the best in the industry. Not only do they take pride in their creative work, but their number one focus is always creating the best client experience. At Boardroom, we implement continuous training to our Stylists, Barbers, and Front Desk Consigners with monthly focuses on technical and professional interaction. The Boardroom takes pride in being the authority in men’s grooming, and our employees continue to uphold that standard. One of Boardroom’s Company Core Values is Teamwork, and we take that very seriously. The Boardroom Experience is not accomplished by one person alone. It takes an entire Team to ensure that our clients have the best experience every time they step foot into a Boardroom Salon. Q: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS LOCATION FOR YOUR BUSINESS? A: Our vision for Boardroom is to become a national brand, which is why we’re significantly expanding the number of salons and markets in which we operate. Our team focuses on opening our new locations in the best retail centers within our target markets. These centers checked all the right boxes to support our growth plans and continue to give clients a reason to regularly select Boardroom as their place to get ready. "We can't think of a better cause to support than Pediatric Cancer Research. And the best way for us to physically show our support is through cooking amazing food for the guests who have spent time and money supporting Children's Healthcare of Atlanta," said general manager, Paul Dunn. Summer at Davio's means new and healthier menu options. "Summer is all about using the best produce we can find! We love working with local producers for our fruit and vegetables all season long," he says. New to Davio's is The Awaken 180 Menu, an interesting offering and perfect for those watching their summer bods. Diet plans usually make restaurant dining a nightmare, if not completely verboten, but Davio’s is working to change that. They’re partnering with Awaken180° Weightloss, a meal program that provides users with 80 percent of their food, to allow for guilt-free special occasions and dinner dates that don’t feel like ‘cheat nights.’ Davio’s is offering seven wholesome entree selections, as well as appetizers and (gasp) even dessert at all nine of their Italian Steakhouse locations during both lunch and dinner service. More at Davios.com Today, we celebrate summer in Davio's kitchen and urge you to do the same.

Here are a few of the summer favorites being served:

1. Basil Cavatelli, Maine Lobster, Fennel, Lemon Butter 2. Farro, Shaved Cauliflower, Avocado, Peas, Peppadews, Parmigiano 3. Atlantic Cod, Clams, Sugar Snap Peas, Cherry Tomatoes, Saffron Broth

LOCAL LIMELIGHT POLO IN THE PINES HONOREES BOND AND BUOY US

A Beautiful Friendship ARTICLE ANSLEY PRIDGEN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

POLO IN THE PINES IS AN ANNUAL CHARITY POLO EVENT FOUNDED BY TINA FOWLER AND FAMILY, HELD ON OCTOBER 5 AND 6, BENEFITING CHILDREN’S HEALTHCARE OF ATLANTA, FOR PEDIATRIC CANCER RESEARCH. The seventh annual event and will be full of amazing additions such as a Veuve Cliquot sponsorship, Audi partnership, Atlanta Polo Brunch Festival, vendor market and much more. Lifestyle Publications has been a proud sponsor since the event’s inception. This year, the event ambassador is Madison Williams, a talented young singer/songwriter. Last year, the Polo in the Pines honoree was 5-year-old, Caroline Brewer. Madison and Caroline met in 2017 and formed an instant bond. Madison was the first girl Caroline met with a bald spot, and they both still have them. They are friends for life. While they have seen each other regularly at events since they met, their bond continues to grow. Those who know young Caroline understand that she doesn’t hold still for long. She will willingly climb up into your lap or let you hold her in your arms, but she wiggles away before long. When Madison holds her, she remains remarkably calm. Madison and Caroline both have Grade III Anaplastic Ependymoma, a rare type of brain cancer, with only 50 cases reported each year.
