CAPTAIN PLANET FOUNDATION Captain Planet Foundation set a goal to have Project Learning Garden in 500 elementary and middle schools across metro Atlanta by 2020. In addition to the physical raised bed gardens, schools also receive a mobile cooking cart (with a Vitamix!), a garden exploration kit, lesson supply kits, standards-based lessons across multiple subjects, teacher professional development and support during the summer months when school is out of session. Over the past four summers, close to 10,000 pounds of fresh garden produce has been donated to the Food Bank and its pantries around the city.

MASSELL'S BUCKHEAD BLUE RIBBON Former Atlanta Mayor Sam Massell, addressing the Buckhead Business Association with his annual “State of the Community” predictions, described the 28-square-mile affluent community as “surroundings spell sound success both fiscally and physically.” Massell is the founding president of the umbrella-style influential nonprofit Buckhead Coalition. Massell provided an illustration he credited as being the success formula for the area, which was an equilateral triangle routing the skyline at the apex, with the first point identifying a half-dozen Buckhead-named civic and service nonprofit associations, and the other point listing an equal sample number of Buckhead-oriented news periodicals. This, he says, explained the community’s wellbeing, with individuals active in the many organizations, and the publications reporting on their activities, with the skyline coming into being

The amount of green washing (having one organic ingredient but lots of other chemicals and advertising as organic) and false advertising left me frustrated and incensed.” At Aillea, Becca and her team spend time with their customers, finding the right brands to meet any needs. “We can pick and chose from various lines to find the best for each person, for all types and skin color. And, there’s a variety of price ranges. It’s very accessible.” And, since the average woman will ingest seven pounds of lipstick in her lifetime, it makes sense to find a brand that won’t do harm. The same goes for lotions and makeup. “Skin is the largest organ we have. Be careful with what you slather on,” urges Becca. With apps like Think Dirty and websites like EWG.org/SkinDeep, consumers can do their homework and search more than 80,000 products to find smarter choices for healthier living. A DEMENTIA-FRIENDLY COMMUNITY IS A CITY OR COUNTY WHERE MORE PEOPLE UNDERSTAND DEMENTIA AND THERE IS LESS FEAR OR AVOIDANCE OF IT. They are communities who choose to see dementia as a disability that changes over time and take action to ensure care partners and people living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias can continue to engage in their local community activities and be supported by efforts that create a “dementia capable” culture for families. In December, the Georgia Gerontology Society awarded five grants to foster adoption of dementiafriendly practices in Georgia. One of the grants was awarded to Orchard at Brookhaven, a new assisted living and memory care opening spring of 2019. Robin Andrews Smith, Orchard's family advocate, along with Orchard’s 24

SEVEN YEARS AGO I WAS LAUNCHING MY FIRST PUBLICATION EVER WITH NO IDEA OF WHAT TO EXPECT OR HOW IT MIGHT BE RECEIVED BY OUR READERS. It was a proven formula of success in Kansas City but would a community publication mailed direct to a targeted family audience in specific areas of our city be accepted and would it have a positive and meaningful impact on the community? Seven years and four publications later I am so proud to see that the answer has been yes and I believe we have added some meaningful and substantial value to our community. Linking families, businesses, organizations and people together is always a positive thing but not always easy. We wanted to be a connector, where we could join people together to make a difference within the community and we now know we have and continue to do this. We have supported charities around the community like the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities and Polo in the Pines for pediatric cancer research. I am very proud of our team, the culture and spirit in which we take on the day and our magazines and how we strive to make a difference for our community.
