Hello friends, I HAD THE HONOR OF SPENDING THE MORNING WITH LAURA AND RUTHERFORD SEYDEL IN THEIR BUCKHEAD HOME. The two are environmental activists and built the country's first LEED-certified home 12 years ago. She learned to make the earth a priority from her father, Ted Turner. I asked Laura to choose from their library a few books that made her pause or inspired her. Here are her favorites for recommended reading, in honor of our HOME issue, since the earth is the "home sweet home" we all share.

CANONBURY HOMES

14

BuckHaven Lifestyle | March 2019

WE MET NEIL JOHNSON THROUGH OUR FRIENDS AT THE ATLANTA RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES. The company he founded in 2005 has been a long-time sponsor of the Historic Brookhaven Candlelight Tour of Homes, one of ARMHC’s most popular fundraisers, opening beautiful homes in the community during its biannual event. “This generous support ensures children and families can stay close to each other and the life-saving medical care they need,” says Caroline Tate of ARMHC. Canonbury Homes also graciously sponsors Brookhaven Dines In, events that take place in the Historic Brookhaven neighborhood in the fall. Canonbury Homes, Inc. is a premier custom homebuilder catering to clientele in some of the most desirable areas in Atlanta including Buckhead, Brookhaven and Sandy Springs. Since 2005, founder and owner, Neil Johnson has been delivering dream homes to the most discriminating clients. Tracy and Terri Eden asked Neil to build them a cottage style home on the footprint of the original home on East Brookhaven Drive. They wanted a design for casual and easy living, complete with all the high quality finishes that make a home special. The 6,324-square-foot brick construction home has four bedrooms, five full baths and two half baths. Canonbury Homes’ design takes advantage of the surrounding views of the Capital City Golf Course and the skyline. The Edens have two girls attending college and one high schooler, with two English Labs and four cats rounding out the homestead, designed by Peter Block of Peter Block Architects. Johnson has been building premier custom homes in the Buckhead, Brookhaven and Sandy Springs areas in Atlanta since 2005. Bringing many years of experience in woodworking, cabinetry and furniture restoration, Neil is a most exacting craftsman. His attention and intense workmanship combined with time/cost coordination learned as a logistics manager early in his career ensures the homeowner will have a wellrun, high quality experience. One of his partners on the Eden’s home was Windsor Pine who crafted the gorgeous kitchen island and hutch, the beams and a unique built-in bed in the teenager’s bedroom. Windsor Pine is located in Canton, is a family run business, and specializes in custom woodworking including kitchens, flooring, furniture, doors and beams. “We promise to make every effort to assist you in achieving your dream home. From searching for the perfect lot, working with the architect of your choosing throughout the entire build process, every exacting detail will be met as you work closely with our team,” says Johnson. “When you choose Canonbury Homes, you can count on meticulous attention to high quality, durability and extensive detail. As a member of the National Homeowners Association, it is our pledge.” For more information on the 2019 Tour of Homes, please visit ARMHC.org/brookhaven-tour-of-homes. RENOVATE & REFINE

AT YEBO, THE RESTAURANT’S PERSONALITY SHIFTS WITH THE SEASONS

GOODBYE, FUR BLANKETS AND FONDUE—AND HELLO SURF BOARDS AND CEVICHE! ‘Tis the season for Yebo to shed its layers of Ski Haus décor and a menu filled with cold weather favorites to become Buckhead’s go-to Beach Haus. “Atlantans love going to the beach in the spring and summer, and then going skiing in the winter,” says Kelly Anthony, the interior designer for True Story Brands restaurants (which includes spots such as 10 Degrees South, Cape Dutch and Biltong Bar) and owner of Wolf Design Group. “After Yebo Beach Haus had been open for

a few months in its current location, my husband, Justin, came up with the idea to make this switch with the seasons. We wanted to bring a taste of the traveling-withthe-seasons lifestyle to Atlanta.” Overseeing the interior design for the couple’s restaurants was a natural fit for Kelly, who studied design at American Intercontinental University and later started Wolf Design Group in 1997. Since Yebo moved to its current location three years ago (the concept has been open since 2012), it has been

the only one of the True Story Brand nosh spots that changes its identity every March and November. Each year, the interior design is based on a different beach or ski destination. For example, Kelly has drawn inspiration from Aspen and Chamonix, France, for previous Ski Hauses. “This year, we’re taking inspiration from Saint-Tropez for the Beach Haus,” Kelly says. “The setting is just stunning, plus the cuisine and wine from the area compliment the flavors of South African food and wine.” Once they’ve settled on a destination influence, Kelly creates inspiration boards and pulls together furniture, artwork, and other design elements such as throws and pillows. Trying to use as many Atlanta-based design elements as possible is always a priority. Some of Kelly’s favorite spots for finding furniture, artwork, and other knick-knacks for the décor include Swoox, R. Hughes and B.D. Jeffries. “A few of my favorite items that I’ve found in these boutiques over the years include antique skis, as well as lighting elements and large pieces of artwork that have served as focal points in Yebo,” she adds. Kelly also draws inspiration from some of her favorite designers including Kelly Wearstler and Kelly Hoppen. “I absolutely love the work of these two women from London, because they’re fearless with and without color in their designs, which gives me inspiration for our designs,” Kelly says. To make the switch, Yebo closes for two days. All of the design elements that are being removed are stored, in case they can be used again in future designs. “The best part about the transition is always seeing the customer’s positive reactions to both the new design and menu options,” Kelly says. “It makes all of the hours of planning and hard work worth it.”

with floor-to-ceiling sliding doors leading to a balcony with eye-level views of the Atlantic. The warmth and elegance of the room’s interior was rivaled only by the palm fringed beach view and warm breeze. The bright bathroom was equally as awe-inspiring, with a soaking tub, shower, separate loo, double vanity and a wall of windows to a very private outdoor shower. Full size Spa Botánico products, a chunky loofa sponge and a mountain of fluffy white towels were waiting for me. A softly lit butler’s counter with a tea drawer, mini fridge, bowl of fruit and snacks and Nespresso maker was nestled into the hall outside the amply lit closet complete with a gorgeous robe and branded flip-flops. This room goes down as one of my all-time favorites. Every lady and gentleman I met at the Dorado Beach was bursting with pride for both their work home and the island of Puerto Rico. They all wanted you to know that they and their neighbors await visitors with open arms. Some remnant damage of Hurricane Maria remains in the island’s interior communities and though it’s not forgotten, the ferocity of the 2017 storm that ravaged the island has given away to renovations and a renewed spirit of hope and celebration. Meals in the restaurants, Encanto Beach Club Bar and Grill and Positivo Sand Bar and to-go provisions from La Cocina Gourmet were memorable with artful plates of local produce and fish and Asian dishes all under the watchful eye of Chef Jose Miguel de la Puente. The kitchens are full of love and passion for food and in fact, the Ritz kitchen was home base for renown chef and activist José Andrés during Hurricane Maria when his World Central Kitchen made millions of meals for people in all of Puerto Rico’s 78 municipalities. This love for the land and its people shines through the many diverse experiences offered at Dorado Beach. Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment introduces guests (young and young at heart) to the natural wonders and rich cultural traditions of Puerto Rico from groovy beachside classrooms. Also featured in the program is the historic Rockefeller Trail originally conceived by Laurance Rockefeller in the 1950s to create a walkable, openair sanctuary through the resort's surroundings. Dorado Beach Reserve is beautiful, inside and out, with the warmth of its ladies and gentlemen a beacon for guests who will want to return again and again.

OPEN HOUSE

(CON TI N U ED)

SC: Your families have a deep history in Buckhead. Your son is now Director of Sustainability for the City of Atlanta. As parents, you must be bursting with pride. How has your hometown of Buckhead changed over the last decade? How does it still feel like home? LS: We are proud of our children and the fact that they, like their grandpa, Ted Turner, the original Captain Planet, have developed a passion for and an understanding of the importance of stewardship of clean water, clean air and biodiversity that makes up our life support system. It is very exciting and rewarding to our family that Atlanta has become a top-tiered city in sustainability. We have successful model projects like the Atlanta BeltLine, 120 miles and increasing bike paths, the Chattahoochee River corridor project, the Atlanta Better Buildings Challenge and the country’s first dedicated urban agriculture program. RS: Buckhead is now a place where people live, work, play, dine, shop and worship, and it’s becoming increasingly more walkable, with an international aesthetic. And still, we can see an eight-point buck in the yard! Buckhead’s demographics are changing as people from different backgrounds are coming together, living less divided. To me, it still feels like Mayberry. Growing up, our family walked to church and today, I am privileged to have my grandfather, John Rutherford Seydel (age 100) living nearby. I bike to his house nearly every day when I’m in town. He grew up on 10th Street then moved to the “suburbs,” the rolling hills of Haynes Manor. SC: The EcoManor has become a space for a convergence of important eco-living conversations. You've hosted politicians and authors, entrepreneurs and industry leaders. Millions of dollars have been raised by organizations you have generously hosted at the house. Were you planning on opening your doors so regularly or was that a natural evolution? Why are these collaborations important and how can readers join the conversation or get involved? LS + RS: Our plan was to have an open feel to the house so we could host fundraising and networking events. It has been our pleasure to bring the community together over important and timely topics. We have enjoyed the opportunity to share our home and experiences with the community. People have been so interested in learning about how what we did could be used and or integrated in their own home and lifestyle. One simple thing everyone can practice is to remember the four R’s: reduce, reuse, recycle and refuse. We need to especially refuse one-time use plastic products like plastic bags, bottles and straws. RS: And, on a daily basis, we can all be more polite, being courteous of one another, and also of our environment. 26

LOCAL’S CHOICE A PLAYLIST FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO SPICE UP THEIR PARTIES WITH TASTEFUL AND TRENDY TUNES!

Home Is Where The Harmony Is ONE NIGHT. I’ve moved cities/apartments/houses every six months or so for the past five years. Some people may think this would be disorienting, making it harder to find a footing in a community. But to me, I’ve found that the nomadic lifestyle is one I appreciate more. Moving around has forced me to be a minimalist and compartmentalize all aspects of my life. You learn to love the small things in your life, like movie ticket stubs, dumb little posters you find in coffee shops, and... music. Music is such an easy way to make your space feel like home. It evokes emotions and memories that, for me, tether me to reality and help my one-window room with mysteriously stained doors feel like home because I'm in control of the atmosphere within it. I hope y’all enjoy this curated list of my favorite boujie party songs! Find it on Spotify, @MollyCollins27:Lifestyle.
