Hello, Culture Vultures!

hen my kids "discovered" vinyl, their lives changed. All three now have turntables and are building their own collections. Cool. Sound familiar? What was your first album? I had four much older brothers, teenage rebels in the late 60s and 70s. We had crates and crates full of records in our rec room. The turntable was off-limits to the little sisters, but when the boys went away to college or to find themselves, we girls commandeered that rec room and made The Sony Walkman. it our own. We danced, set up forts, spread out our Barbies and The Discman. The hosted Scout meetings and epic sleepovers. While we missed our cassette and 8-track sweet brothers dearly, there was something magical about being in players. Now, it's all in my phone! that room listening to records through heavy headphones. I played Carol King (Tapestry was my first album, purchased at Melody Records with babysitting money) and borrowed a Peter Frampton album from the girl next door. My brothers left behind Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Ramsey Lewis and The Who. Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite" and Respighi's "Pines of Rome" were on the shelves and I would listen, transported to a higher place far, far away -- as far away as a 13-yearold girl in suburban Detroit could imagine. Music has that power, doesn't it? I'm a huge fan of Spotify and listen to their New Music Friday station and, if I'm lucky, find one title to add to a playlist in my library. More often, I hit "browse" and find a genre or A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS mood (chill, mood booster, workout...) (TO LISTEN TO) and settle into a task. Back To The World

Koi offers the largest selection of high-quality koi in the Southeast. The larger investments are the fish as well as a quality filtration systems. “We can sell a four-inch koi for $500 or a 12-inch one for $75,” he says. Crisp hand selects the koi from fish farms. Prices range from $25 to $12,000. Ponds can be as small as 200 gallons, which he said is perfect for a condo. “A koi pond requires a waste filtration system and must be at least four-feet deep. People break that rule all the time. They think they can just dig a hole, put in liner and you’re done but it’s not that simple. The key is filtration. If it’s done properly, the pond will work well and efficiently; if not, you’ll always have a problem.” As an example of his integrity, passion for his work and dedication to customers, Chuck, who has spent his entire life in the Marietta area, will not build a pond without a proper filtration system, which can cause algae to grow and fish to die. “When I build you a pond it will be done correctly and filtered properly,” he says. Chuck, General Manager Isabel Crisp, and the entire staff are highly trained and knowledgeable about maintaining a pond and can even offer advice on the health of a fish. “We do it all. When other pond builders have a problem, they call us. We know all the problems and the solutions," says Chuck. He is quick to point out that at a first look, it may seem expensive and complicated setting up a koi pond but he says it is well worth it. “I tell people that you’re building a pond once and you’re only paying for it once but you get to enjoy it for the rest of your life. You reap the benefits all the time. You’re investing in happiness.”

My husband and I bought a house in Ashford Park November 2015 but I was renting in the same neighborhood down the street when we met in 2013. We fell in love in this neighborhood...and with this neighborhood.

n her starring role as the principal librarian of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Rebecca Beavers, of Brookhaven, revels in the roles of butcher, baker and candlestick maker. Well, certainly not literally, but figuratively for certain. Growing up in a musical family with five siblings, each playing different instruments, Beavers uses her passion for and knowledge of various instruments in her daily work with the ASO. “An orchestra librarian is a musician who knows about every instrument on the stage and what the players need to perform to the best of their ability,” she shares. “I am a French horn player in my heart and soul, and I also enjoy playing the piano and singing alto in a chorus.” Beavers likens the music library to the “kitchen” of an orchestra. “We are the chefs and sous chefs,” she explains. She and her team prepare and deliver the music for the orchestra, using sets of parts and conductor scores the orchestra owns or has rented from publishers. It takes dedication to prepare all the different music for the wide

variety of concerts the orchestra performs, including editing, correcting mistakes, and marking the bowings for the string sections. No matter your musical preference, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra has a concert for you, including Classical, POPS!, the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, Family and the Holiday concert series. uckhead artist Susan Beallor-Snyder continues to push herself into new media, new markets and new spaces. A long-time friend

of BuckHaven Lifestyle, we are so proud to announce that her work has been chosen to be included in the Children’s Museum of the Arts (CMA) new show, “SewWhat?” on view in the Cynthia C. Wainwright Gallery in lower Manhattan. We caught up with Susan, who lives with her husband Stuart Snyder in Buckhead and spends time creating art in New York and Maine. “I am thrilled and honored to have been included in the show, “Sew What?” at CMA alongside some wonderful artists including the great twentieth century contemporary artist, Louise Bourgeois,” says Susan. The show runs through May 22.

The exhibition takes textile arts as its starting point and includes contemporary artists whose work transforms the material of fiber. "Sew What?" revels in the diversity of textiles, and how these materials are transformed through various techniques by contemporary artists. Susan’s creative, inquisitive nature led her to explore different mediums over the course of her career. Beallor-Snyder, a New York City native, focuses on large scale natural manila rope forms. These one-of-a-kind sculptures allow her to infuse simple materials with thought provoking depth and profound emotion. BeallorSnyder’s technique is what she calls free weaving, using the rope in different thicknesses along with a wire cutter. Beallor-Snyder works on the floor and creates as she goes, without a sketch or plan for the work. We can see the narrative in each piece as the eye travels the length of the sculpture, following the swirls of chaos, layers of inner turmoil and endless knots. rowing up, my parents never played the top 40 station as we drove to and fro in our iconic blue mini van. My dad strictly played “80s on 8” and “70s on 7” while my mom played the sinful sounds of Motown and Jill Scott. So, I've never have the same taste for popular music as my peers. When friends would ask me to make a playlist for a party, I would fill it with The Ramones, The Supremes, Television and Paul Simon, rather than the usual Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande. Even though my music would often be shut down within the third or fourth song, it felt so good to look up and see a few friends sway to the sounds of the past in appreciation. This playlist was made for anyone who needs to be reawakened via my favorite bands, and see the world through a new set of barre chords.

The Cure is one of my favorite bands out of the 80s, embodying two things I think that era is known for: crazy hair, and, sometimes, overly emotional songs. With vinyl records making a song comeback, I believe that this band is a quintessential component on any playlist. If you like this song, you'll also like “Sunday Morning” by No Doubt.

Cash+David is made up of two wildly talented artists who mix both of their electronic and indie backgrounds to make one extremely entertaining record. This song, along with others, has stellar guitar and fun beats that, no matter who the listener, make you want to tap your foot. If you like this song, then you’ll like “Take My Picture” by Filter.

2. "IS THIS HOW YOU FEEL?" - THE PREATURES

The Preatures is a 5-piece Aussie band that continues to impress me as I listen to their upbeat and head-bopping album. Released last year, this album has a 70s rock element to it, and makes me want to roll down all the windows and blast it while driving down the highway on a bright summer's day. Great song. Great band. Great everything. If you like this song, you'll like “Don't Save Me” by Haim. 3. "MESSED UP KIDS" - JAKE BUGG

6. "FALLOUT" - CATFISH AND THE BOTTLEMEN

No playlist would be complete without a song by one of the best up-and-coming bands of 2016, Catfish and the Bottlemen. I've listened to this album on every medium I can get my hands on, and everytime I hear it I get knots in my stomach because that's how good it is. Mixing a little bit of punk, rock, alternative and everything in between, this band never ceases to amaze me. If you like this song, then you’ll like “If You Wanna” by The Vaccines.

One of my favorite artists of all time, Jake Bugg sounds, to me, like the product of Paul McCartney and Michael Kiwanuka. Mixing McCartney’s smooth vocals, and Kiwanuka’s soulful acoustics, every song on Bugg’s new album (appropriately named Shangri La) is utter perfection and tells a story that everyone should listen too. If you like this song, you'll like “Sixteen” by Bombay Bicycle Club.

I heard of Oh Wonder while looking for songs to listen to while shut up in the library during finals week, and I can solidly say that their soothing synchronized vocals are the single most important attribute for my success over the hellish week. Oh Wonder’s debut album consists of every aspect one needs to have a great band: meaningful lyrics, great vocals and simple instrumentation. If you like this song, then you’ll like “I’ll Try Anything Once” by Julian Casablancas.
