Welcome to our latest style issue, where we celebrate the diverse forms of expression that define our community. In these pages, we explore stories of creativity, innovation, and the power of passion in shaping not only our personal style but the world around us.

Music has always been a powerful force in our lives, and for many, the dream of being a star starts with the first strum of a guitar. At Monkton Guitars, the spotlight shines on instruments that aren’t just tools but extensions of the artist’s soul. In this issue, we take you inside this guitar sanctuary, where history, craftsmanship, and the love of music converge.
On the other end of the spectrum, Xero Shoes is redefining what it means to step out in style. Born from a passion for barefoot movement, this Broomfieldbased company is making waves not only in the minimalist footwear world but now on the NBA court as well. Partnering with Denver Nuggets shooting guard Justin Holiday, Xero Shoes proves that style and performance go hand in hand—or in this case, foot in shoe.
But style isn’t just about what we wear or play; it’s also about the impact we make. The Broomfield Rotary’s partnership with the Imagination Library exemplifies this perfectly. By fostering a love of reading in our youngest residents, they are shaping the future with every book delivered. It’s a reminder that true style lies in the legacy we leave behind.
In a world where style often seems fleeting, K&G Property Care stands out for its commitment to enduring quality and reliability. Their attention to detail and personalized approach ensure that every outdoor space they touch is not only aesthetically pleasing but also a true reflection of the homeowner’s lifestyle.
Thank you for joining us on this journey of inspiration and creativity. We hope these stories ignite your passion and encourage you to express your unique style in every aspect of your life.
Warm regards,

It goes without saying that footwear is a BIG deal for most professional athletes, particularly in the NBA. Basketball shoes serve a purpose on the court, but they also make a statement. After all, if you’re from a certain generation, you understood that if you wanted to “be like Mike,” that meant wearing his trademarked shoes, am I right?
For that reason, the fact that Broomfield is home to a minimalist shoe company that earned a spot on the NBA court is freaking amazing.
Broomfield-based Xero Shoes is wellknown in the barefoot crowd, and for good reason. From casual to running, hiking to weight training, CrossFit, and more, the
stylish looks and color options appeal to people with varying tastes and needs. Perhaps most importantly, they are purpose-built for optimal foot health, strength, and mobility. And now they are turning heads in the NBA by partnering with Denver Nuggets shooting guard Justin Holiday!
“When Justin moved to Denver to be on the Nuggets, he’d been looking for a minimalist basketball shoe for a long time, and he couldn’t find anything, not realizing we were based in Broomfield, a suburb of Denver. He played three games in our shoes—that kind of says it all,” said Stephen Sashen, Co-Founder of Xero Shoes.
ARTICLE BY JUSTIN SCHIERKOLK
Before coming to Denver, Justin’s former coach had him doing a lot of barefoot training. The benefits of training “unshod” are numerous. Most notably, athletes see improved foot and ankle strength, balance, and stability. More and more pro athletes, amateurs, and everyday consumers are catching on. Google Trends shows a steady growth of the term “Barefoot Shoes” since 2002, with the term now at “peak search volume.”
“After years of working out off-court barefooted, I felt the first-hand benefits of allowing my feet to move in their natural state and wanted to maximize the benefits of barefoot movement,” said Holiday. “I love wearing the Xero Shoes basketball shoes because I feel more explosive and more efficient in my movements. These minimalist shoes make me feel better when pivoting, cutting, and jumping because I’m closer to the court. Now I wear Xero Shoes every day for training, lifting, and wearing casually.”
And when Justin says “casually,” he doesn’t mean wearing his custom basketball kicks off the court. Xero Shoes carries over 50 shoes, boots, and sandals in various styles and colors. Two of his favorites are the Dillon and the Forza Trainer.
In addition to months of training and performance testing his custom-designed basketball shoe, barefoot training is part of Holiday’s regular performance regimen. This gives his feet more noticeable ground feedback than when he wears traditional shoes.
The Xero Shoes’ product development team collaborated with basketball athletes (including Holiday), trainers, and other experts to design and test a minimalist basketball shoe. The shoe has a lower stack height (including rubber, midsole foam, and sock liner) that maximizes performance and comfort while being lighter than conventional basketball shoes. Holiday also has a unique shoe size that is narrower than average and always poses a challenge, so Xero Shoes catered the fit in his custom-made shoe.
The Xero Shoes’ basketball shoe features the brand’s iconic natural footwear DNA: a wider foot-shaped toe box designed for stability and big toe engagement, and a zero-drop heel for efficiency. A key component is a protective foam that retains a lightweight, low-profile design. For a secure fit and lockdown, the shoe features a Velcro strap and a heel capture for on-court dynamic movement. A moisture-wicking and abrasion-resistant liner keeps athletes’ feet cool and comfortable. A multilayer monofilament mesh material rounds out the design. It gives a sleek, modern look that is lightweight, flexible, and breathable without sacrificing durability.

Xero Shoes is a leading natural movement footwear brand with over 50 casual and performance shoes, boots, and sandals. Co-founders, husband and wife Steven Sashen and Lena Phoenix, founded the brand in 2009 with a DIY sandal-making kit, and have grown to almost $50 Million net revenue. Xero Shoes are inspired by barefoot walking, which enables feet to function naturally while providing protection and style. They offer comfortable and natural footwear, so people can “Live Life Feet First.” Xero Shoes has more than 1.5 million loyal customers globally in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

“Throughout the process, we’ve received countless wear test reports that the shoe enables basketball athletes to get closer to the court, allowing for quick direction changes,” said John Wadley, VP of Product Development and a lifelong basketball player. “We feel weight is currently undervalued in the sport, so this shoe construction focuses on lightweight materials that pack a powerful punch. The shoe’s signature zero-drop platform and wide toe box optimizes stability and power by fostering toe splay for improved balance and stability.”
Adds Sashen, “We are confident in the design philosophy of this shoe, and our goal is to give players more games in a season and more seasons in a career. We’re proud that Justin is the first player to realize and demonstrate what Xero Shoes can bring to the NBA.”
Xero Shoes can bring a revolutionary change to the NBA and many other sports. The concept and brand were conceived many years ago by Sashen’s desire to run injury-free. He took up sprinting at age 45 and put up with constant injuries for two years. A friend handed him a copy of the best-seller Born to Run by Christopher McDougall and suggested that barefoot running might be the cure he was looking for. As it turns out, his friend was right. Sashen found the Boulder Barefoot Running Club and learned how to run barefoot. Eventually, he tried his hand at making his own huaraches running sandals. That was in 2009, and their journey to this point even includes pitching Xero Shoes on an episode of the popular Shark Tank TV series. He and his wife Lena have been helping others live life feet-first ever since!

Musicians come in all shapes, sizes, ages, and personalities. Pandora has 250 channels of music. Why so many? Because musical tastes are as varied as the artists creating the songs and the people who love to listen to them. Who among us hasn’t at least dreamed of being a music star?
Learning to play an instrument might be the first step towards stardom. For those who want to be the next guitar hero, Monkton Guitars is the place to start. Unlike the manufactured glitz of a national chain store, this guitar sanctuary exudes character and style.
“I wanted to build a place where guitars felt at home, and guitarists could stop by to sort of reconnect with an extended family,” says David Williams, the owner of Monkton Guitars. “That’s why I set up shop here in Broomfield.” Instead of leasing retail space in a strip mall, David envisioned something warmer and a little off the beaten path. What used to be a U.S. Post office at 1505 W 1st Avenue is now a gallery of guitars for the beginning to expert player. It's all about the guitars and the people who play them.
It starts with music instruction. David suggests first learning to play an acoustic guitar, and he has a room dedicated to them. You can choose a new entry level wood laminate, a top-of-the-line Furch from the Czech Republic, or a seasoned 80-year-old classic.

To pick and strum along with history, play the Recording King M by Regal, a company that manufactured guitars for Montgomery Ward stores in the late 1930s. Constructed of maple, mahogany, and Brazilian rosewood, this guitar has aged like a fine wine and produces a warm sound nearly impossible to achieve with a brand-new model.
For a more fanciful statement while on the stage, you could play one of Monkton’s limited-edition Felix the Cat Little Martin guitars. Built between 2004 and 2007, they are very rare, especially when available as a set. All the artwork was designed by Don Oriolo, the son of Joe Oriolo, who created Felix the Cat. Imagine your part in a trio of cool cats getting together to jam on these babies!
Want something more high-tech?
The McPherson Guitars’ Sable Blackout Carbon-Fiber guitar is a great option. Since it is made almost entirely of carbon fiber, this gem is durable, lightweight, and heat- and humidity-resistant. Designed with an offset soundhole and cantilevered neck, this guitar is unique, just like you!
If you are of the mind that, “They just don’t make ‘em like they used to,” Monkton hears you. How about the vintage Rickenbacker Model A-22 lap steel electric guitar that was built in 1933? It was the first commercially successful electrified string instrument. (Gee, who’d have thought an electric guitar would become a success?) With a look and style all its own, it is a piece of musical lore. Made of aluminum, it was marketed as a Hawaiian guitar and nicknamed “The Frying Pan” due to its unique shape.

“I wanted to build a place where guitars felt at home, and guitarists could stop by to sort of reconnect with an extended family.”
“Novices and headliners alike continue to build their persona and perfect their chops on the vintage, classic, and new guitars available at the shop with a style all its own.”

It’s hard to bring the crowd to their feet if your electric guitar has no juice, so you better plug in that amp. The handmade 2014 Gabriel V-18 combo amplifier should get them talking about last night’s show. It is an all-tube/hand-wired amplifier built solely by Gabriel Bucataru. The materials, time, and energy required to make it eventually proved to be too much for the Romanian-born inventor. He disappeared from the music scene several years ago, but his impact lives on.
All these toys and many more can be found at Broomfield’s own Monkton Guitars. Novices and headliners alike continue to build their persona and perfect their chops on the vintage, classic, and new guitars available at the shop with a style all its own. His grassroots notoriety has been built by word of mouth, and he has created a place to help you grow yours. You only need to decide how that will look and sound.

Broomfield Rotary in Partnership with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library Inspires a Love for Reading
“My children (ages four and two) absolutely love being part of the Dolly Parton book program. They check the mail EVERY DAY and have the biggest smiles when their books arrive. We read them right away and they go right on the bedside table for reading again at bedtime. It is such a fantastic program. Thank you for your generosity and for fostering a love of reading! Best wishes!” Nicole, Eve, and Roy.
This letter is just one example of many Broomfield Rotary has received for their sponsorship of the Imagination Library in Broomfield. For 66 years, Broomfield Rotary members and their friends like the Westminster Rotary have enjoyed each other’s company while serving the community with volunteers and fundraising events. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is one of their recent and most significant contributions. This free book gifting program aims to instill a passion
for reading in our community's children. Thanks to the Broomfield Rotary and the Westminster Rotary, every child in Broomfield, from birth to age five, is gifted a free book every month. As they approach kindergarten, they boast a personal collection of 60 books, fostering a solid foundation for reading before they even start school.
Marisa Connors shared, "This program was a treasure for our family! It was a bittersweet moment when our little one graduated from it. A heartfelt thanks to the Rotary for their generosity!"
The Broomfield Rotary Club continuously seeks new members and contributions to sustain programs like the Imagination Library, Broomfield Senior Resources, the Police and Fireman's Fund and our community resource center, Broomfield FISH. Check out their website if you wish to know more, Broomfieldrotary.org.
