BRUNCH THAT BECOMES A TRADITION

From chorizo-smothered burritos to cinnamon rolls the size of your head, EAT! Food & Drink redefines local brunch. Savor chef-crafted benedicts, bold mimosas, and a vibe that’s perfect for girls’ day, Mother’s Day, or a laid-back family feast.

In Our Own Backyard

In our own backyard, there is beauty. There is tragedy. There is prosperity and there is hardship.

The other evening, while driving past Anthem Community Park, my mind was tangled with the usual noise — business, family, politics, and the eternal question of why I can’t quit Chipotle. Then the Flatirons caught the sunset just right — pinks and purples painting the sky — and suddenly, everything quieted.

I thought about how often we miss the extraordinary in our own ordinary. How often we chase someone else’s “backyard” instead of seeing the grace in our own.

This month’s stories remind us that gratitude and purpose are right here, close to home. The Christmas Commandos bring light to grieving families, quietly delivering gifts and hope when it’s needed most. The team at Althaus Law shows that love isn’t just spoken — it’s planned for — by helping families protect one another before life’s hardest moments arrive. And at Denver Premium Outlets, community runs deeper than shopping, with art, nature, and education woven into everyday experiences that make our community stronger.

So, the next time life feels heavy, pause. Look around. We have so much to be thankful for right here, in our own backyard.

In gratitude,

Where Local Meets Luxe

Denver Premium Outlets brings together sustainability, creativity, and connection—turning everyday shopping into a meaningful experience.

“This is our community. We care about education, we care about the local economy,” says Wendy Manning, director of marketing and business development for Denver Premium Outlets. “We need to leave this place better than we found it.”

Shopping at Denver Premium Outlets, located at 13801 Grant St., just east of I-25 and north of 136th Avenue, is only part of the story. Beyond more than 80 stores and restaurants—including major draws like Nike, Tory Burch and Coach—the center has become a gathering place where nature, art, education and local partnerships bring people together.

CONNECTIONS THROUGH NATURE

Take a walk through the Outlet’s center and step on a paver path made of algae—among the first of its kind in the world. Wander past one of two pollinator gardens, alive with native grasses and colorful blooms from spring through fall. Or pause at the gigantic 20-foot-by-23-foot “Colorado Lifecycles” mural painted by local artist Kerry Cesen, who spent more than 100 hours meticulously illustrating Monarch butterflies, hummingbirds and Colorado plant life.

LOCAL PARTNERSHIPS

The algae brick path was created by Boulderbased Prometheus Materials, an innovative company focused on sustainable building. The Butterfly Pavilion, celebrating 30 years this year, partners with the Outlets to provide free STEM-based programming with nature components and kid-friendly offerings during the summer

“We can empower our community to positively impact pollinator protection and conservation, while promoting greater biodiversity,” says Jennifer Quermann, Butterfly Pavilion’s senior director of

communications and marketing. “Denver Premium Outlets is a meaningful partner with shared values in protecting these animals and our ecosystems.”

SHARED EXPERIENCES

For families, the center offers playful and surprising moments—from a gigantic free play park to live reindeer visits during the holidays. Summer programs weave in science and exploration. Shoppers can stop, linger and connect in ways that go beyond retail.

The stores themselves play a role, too. Tory Burch, for example, hosts special events to build connections among its shoppers.

“At the Denver Premium Outlet Tory Burch, we believe our role extends beyond the walls of our store,” says Staci Maj, general manager. “We are passionate about creating meaningful events for our clients, such as celebrating International Women’s Day and honoring heritage by featuring a Día de las Madres event.”

For International Women’s Day in March, the store hosted two local esthetician entrepreneurs— supporting women-owned businesses while connecting shoppers to community stories.

“Through these purposeful moments, we aim to inspire, support local growth and strengthen community connections,” says Maj.

SUSTAINABILITY FOR THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Denver Premium Outlets also strives to connect globally while staying rooted locally. Last year, the center received the Adams County Gamechanger Sustainability Award and installed Thornton’s first e-bike smart hub. A “Sustainability Scavenger Hunt” invites guests to explore other green features, such as a 1,700-plant living wall. These initiatives encourage healthier, more connected neighborhoods.

“We want you to have an experience,” Manning says.

So—come for the shopping, stay for the chance to connect, learn and be part of a community.

DELIVERING HOPE

Christmas Commandos Brings Light to Families in Their Darkest Seasons

PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH DAWN PHOTOGRAPHY & CHRISTMAS COMMANDOS

With a mug of steaming tea, she walks toward the front window, her heart heavy with grief. She didn't have it in her to hang Christmas decorations this year. As she peers out at the frozen winter wonderland, an unexpected scene catches her eye: candy canes lining the walkway, a large box filled with gifts on the porch, and at the center, a delicate angel statue, its wings outstretched. Tears spring to her eyes. For the first time since her loss, she feels remembered. She feels loved.

This is the work of Christmas Commandos, a nonprofit that has been bringing holiday light to grieving families since 1998 through the magical, anonymous delivery of special gifts during the Christmas season. What began as one mother’s mission has grown into a network spanning multiple states and touching thousands of lives.

The story started in South Bend, Indiana, when the youngest of four daughters was diagnosed with a rare form of pediatric cancer. During this time, the daughter’s mom (who later became known as the Chief Commando) met many families at the hospital—some whose children survived and some who didn’t. The mom’s heart broke for all the families. She wanted to help.

Reflecting on the first Christmas without their loved one, the Chief Commando came up with an idea to show love to the grieving families. She and her husband, with the help of friends, created a little North Pole in their basement, wrapping gifts that they’d purchased. On Christmas Eve, the group slipped into the night, anonymously decorating lawns and arranging the presents on the doorsteps of five grieving families.

After the first year, word spread about the magic that had occurred, and the tradition grew. In 2018, the mission expanded to Colorado. What began in one basement has since served more than 3,000 families across multiple states.

Today, teams in Indiana, Colorado and beyond deliver packages to families experiencing an out-of-order loss: when life doesn’t follow the expected rhythm, like a child dying before a parent or a spouse passing too soon. “The first Christmas after a loss is the hardest,” said the current Chief Commando. “Everyone else is celebrating, and you just feel the absence. That’s where we come in.”

Nominations come in through word of mouth or on their website, where community members can submit a recipient family. A Commandos team member connects with the nominator, who provides details about the family—names, ages, favorite colors, hobbies and even pets. “We want to know what makes their heart sing—whether it’s basketball, dance or art—so that on Christmas morning, the gifts feel personal,” the Chief Commando said.

“ CHRISTMAS COMMANDOS IS ABOUT NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS, AND LOVE DELIVERED QUIETLY IN THE NIGHT.”

Each family receives gifts tailored to them, along with a bundle of traditions: a cozy blanket, a Believe ornament, a book, a funny game and the angel statue. The angel is especially meaningful. “I think the most cherished item is the angel,” one recipient reflected. “It shows that an angel is looking over us all the time.”

Families keep them for years as physical reminders that their loved one is not forgotten.

Behind the scenes, the volunteer angels are busy in preparation mode. Volunteer shoppers take their assigned lists and search for the perfect presents.

In early December, volunteers gather for wrapping night. The scene is one of joyful chaos: long tables piled high with rolls of red and green paper, ribbons curling under scissors and tape disappearing as fast as volunteers can grab it. Laughter echoes as strangers bond over bows and gift tags. By the end of the night, the wrapping space is stacked with boxes, each labeled for a specific family.

Then comes the delivery Once reserved for Christmas Eve, Commandos now spread the joy any evening during the week of Christmas. Caravans of cars and small U-Hauls fan out across neighborhoods. Volunteers in Santa hats slip through the night, unloading boxes of gifts and stringing sparkling garland. They move quickly before retreating into the shadows.

For volunteers, the impact is profound. One volunteer described the drop-off experience. “It’s both humbling and emotional. A reminder of how powerful small acts of kindness can be.  Driving away, our hearts feel full knowing we were part of something that offered comfort, hope and a little Christmas magic when it's needed most!” The current Chief Commando added, “Many who once received help now return as Commandos themselves, ensuring the cycle of care continues.”

That care recently caught the attention of Broomfield’s Guys Who Give, a community-based philanthropic organization that donates funds quarterly to a Broomfield-based charity. After hearing a member’s heartfelt pitch about Christmas Commandos, members selected the organization to receive their donations. Their contributions will go towards purchasing the gifts that brighten the Christmas season.

In 2023, the founding Chief Commando officially passed the torch to her youngest daughter, who now leads with the same compassion her mother instilled in her. While the pandemic years changed logistics, the mission is thriving and expanding across several states.

At its core, Christmas Commandos is about neighbors helping neighbors, and love delivered quietly in the night. “Being part of this mission has stayed with us and continues to remind us of the true meaning of Christmas—showing up with love, kindness and hope when people need it most,” shared a volunteer.

“I am who I am because of the Christmas Commandos,” said the current Executive Director and Chief Commando. “The selflessness I learned through this mission of anonymity and love shaped me. My sisters and I believe in it so deeply that we know—it won’t just stay here. It will go everywhere.”

And with every angel placed on a grieving family’s porch, that promise shines a little brighter.

Turn Heads

H O P E

with YOU

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?

The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.

Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.

“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”

Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:

SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”

Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:

“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”

Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.

This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.

“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”

Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.

This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.

THE Ultimate LOVE LETTER

HOW ALTHAUS LAW HELPS FAMILIES FIND PEACE IN LIFE’S HARDEST MOMENTS

After Mom's funeral, the quiet felt different—filled with memories of her laughter in the kitchen and her Sunday phone calls. But when it came time to decide what to do with the family home, her three children realized there were no written wishes to guide them.

Each had a different idea: sell it, keep it, preserve it for the grandkids. The conversations were hard, but slowly, love led the way. Together, they found a solution that honored their mom's memory and restored their bond as siblings.

Now, they share their story as a gentle reminder: planning ahead isn't about paperwork or possession—it’s peace, love, and protecting what truly matters most-family.

Scenarios like this happen all too often. Families are left confused, hurt, and unsure how to move forward when no one plans ahead. The professionals at  Althaus Law help Broomfield families keep peace, clarity, and care at the center of every decision.

As Jeff Althaus, founder of Althaus Law and author of You Only Die Once, reminds us,  "The conversations behind your documents are just as important as the documents themselves. Talk to your family so they know what to expect. I've witnessed these conversations single-handedly stop fights."

While estate planning may feel complicated, it doesn’t have to be. As Albert Einstein said, “If you can’t explain it to a six-year-old, you don’t understand it yourself.” So let’s break it down in the simplest way possible—like we’re explaining it to a six-year-old—so it’s clear, kind, and keeps families whole.

“MOMMY, DADDY, WHAT’S A WILL?”

A will is a document that says who gets your stuff when you pass away. More importantly, it’s where you name who will take care of your kids if you can’t. Without one, a judge decides. And that judge might pick someone you wouldn’t choose.

“BUT WHAT’S A TRUST? ISN’T THAT THE SAME THING?”

Almost. A will doesn’t matter until you’re gone. A trust kicks in right away. It protects your family and your stuff now, not later. It also helps avoid probate—the court process that can eat up time and money after someone passes away.

“WHAT HAPPENS TO ME IF YOU’RE NOT AROUND?”

That’s guardianship. Parents get to name guardians to raise their kids if something happens. But here’s the kicker—godparents don’t count. Courts don’t recognize them unless they’re legally named. Without a guardian in writing, a judge makes the choice. That might mean the relative you never imagined—or foster care.

“WHO PAYS THE BILLS IF YOU GET HURT?”

That’s where a financial power of attorney comes in. It lets parents choose someone to manage money if they can’t do it. Without it, the court steps in and appoints a stranger, known as a conservator. And yes, that stranger gets paid with your money.

“WHO TALKS TO THE DOCTORS?”

That’s a medical power of attorney. It names the person who

can make healthcare decisions if you can’t. Without it, again, the court picks someone.

“OKAY, BUT WHAT’S A LIVING WILL?”

Despite the name, it’s not a will at all. It’s a piece of paper that says whether you want life support in an end-of-life situation. It may be the toughest decision you’ll ever make, but it saves your family from having to make it for you.

“SO WHAT IS PROBATE? DO I HAVE TO GO?”

Probate is the process that transfers property after someone dies. In Colorado, if you have less than $86,000 in your name and no real estate, you can avoid it. Otherwise, probate is required unless you’ve set up a trust. It isn’t always scary, but it does take time and money.

Here’s the truth: estate planning isn’t about death. It’s about love. It’s about sparing your family from confusion, courtrooms, and conflict. Wills, trusts, guardianships, powers of attorney, living wills—they’re not just legal tools. They’re love letters. They’re the way you keep guiding your family even when you can’t be there. And there’s a quiet gratitude in that—gratitude that your care and foresight today can give your loved ones peace tomorrow.

As Jeff Althaus puts it, “At Althaus Law, our team has a goal of keeping families together. We’ve seen these struggles in our clients’ lives, our friends’ lives, and our own personal lives, and we know how to plan for them to stop fights and keep your family out of court.”

Because after the funeral, the silence shouldn’t come from heartbreak and division. With the right plan, it can come from peace.
