Challenge Your Beliefs Let’s be honest—when was the last time you really explored something new? I’m not talking about trekking through the Amazon or cliff-diving in Croatia. I mean curiosity-driven, mind-opening, "wait, what?!" kind of exploring. Sure, a little FOMO helps push us out the door, but at its core, exploration is about challenging what we think we know. It starts in the mind—with a spark, a question, or maybe just a craving for something different. That’s the spirit behind this month’s issue. We’re shaking up a few well-worn beliefs: • You need a vacation from your vacation. (Not if you do it right—see the cover story about our blissful staycation at the Omni Interlocken Resort.) • “If the cops show up, something bad is happening.” (Think again—meet BCORE, the mental health-focused arm of Broomfield PD.) • “Roofing companies can’t be trusted.” (Wrong—one of the best ones is right here in our own backyard.) This month, we invite you to rethink, rediscover, and reignite your curiosity— right here in Broomfield. And before I go, here’s a little wisdom a friend shared with me recently: “There’s a difference between being nice and being kind. Nice expects something in return. Kind just gives.” So while you're out and about this summer—on trails, in town, or just flipping through this issue—I hope you’ll explore not only new places and ideas, but also new ways to show kindness. It’s one of the best adventures we can take. Here’s to discovering something new,

“Please remove your belt and shoes.” “You’ve been randomly selected for a bag search.” “Your flight is delayed.” If those phrases make your eye twitch, you’re not alone. These are the hallmarks of modern travel—a series of mildly traumatizing events sandwiched between moments of actual vacation. This year, my wife, Sarah, and I did something revolutionary: we skipped the airport altogether. Instead, we drove a whopping fifteen minutes to the Omni Interlocken Resort—and discovered that luxury doesn’t require a boarding pass. Our itinerary included a two-night stay in a luxury suite, dining at Shep’s and The Camper, ample poolside leisure time, and a comprehensive spa package featuring an infrared sauna and a 100-minute massage. Our goal was relaxation, but for those seeking a more active getaway, we encourage you to consider booking a tee time for 18 holes of world-class golf or a tour with Colorado Wilderness Guides and Rides. A WARM WELCOME AND ZERO JET LAG
We had barely finished waving goodbye to our daughters (left in the loving care of friends—thank you, Kristen and Rob) when we were greeted at the Omni Interlocken Resort by staff who were not only expecting us but seemed genuinely happy to see us. The kind of five-star attentiveness where you feel less like a guest and more like a VIP member of a calm, very well-run club. Our suite? A serene, spacious haven with a majestic view of the Flatirons and—what’s that? Silence? No slime on the counters? No “Mom, she took my stuffie!” Just peace, comfort, and relaxation. We exhaled.

DINNER WITH A LOCAL LEGEND
That evening, we dined at Shep’s, named after a Broomfield icon. Shep was a beloved dog and faithful companion who greeted travelers and tollbooth workers on the Boulder Turnpike for 14 years starting in 1950. Shep’s unwavering loyalty and friendly demeanor made him a cherished part of the turnpike. “Shep’s pays homage to a four-legged legend,” said Gerry McFarland, Director of Sales & Marketing at the resort. “A local author wrote a book about him, Shep the Turnpike Dog, a few years ago.” After talking with her, we just had to name the restaurant after Shep.” An international hotel brand embracing a slice of Broomfield history? That’s the kind of local flavor we can get behind. Speaking of flavor, the Bison Birria Tacos were so good that we ordered them again the
next day by the pool. To drink, our server suggested the Mountain Mule—Tito’s Vodka, real apple, lime, and Owen’s Ginger Beer—which Sarah declared “dangerously refreshing.” For the main course, I enjoyed the PotatoCrusted Salmon, while Sarah had the DryAged Bone-In Strip Steak. We both agreed that the menu includes a nice balance of options for people with a variety of tastes. From soup and salad to sandwiches, pizza, and entrees, there's something here for everyone. As dinner came to a close and we paid our tab, the only regret I had was not leaving room to try the S’mores Pop Tart. The next morning, I hit the gym—clean, modern, and stocked with all the gear I needed to convince myself I’d earned breakfast. Meanwhile, Sarah stayed in bed and enjoyed the rarest luxury of all: uninterrupted morning coffee. CONTINUED >

BREAKFAST AT THE CAMPER
This was just what I needed to refuel and get ready for the pool. The Camper ambiance blends an upscale vibe with a classic, oldschool feel. There are deer heads on the wall, but they look more like they came from an art gallery than a hunting camp. Decorated with vintage rafting decor, Stanley thermoses, backpacks, and a slew of other knick-knacks, you can almost smell the campfire. The delicious aroma of sizzling bacon filled the air. And the bacon is something to write home about. We opted for a traditional breakfast of bacon, eggs, fruit, and toast, and it was delicious. We all know that the quality of service can make or break a dining experience, and from the moment we walked in to the time we left, we felt welcomed. It was like being at Grandma’s house for breakfast. CONTINUED >

POOLSIDE BLISS
Sitting by the pool on a warm spring day was really where the “vacation-feel” hit home. “Poolside paradise meant a handcrafted cocktail in one hand, a page-turner in the other, and not a single interruption—until the Bison Birria Tacos arrived for lunch, delivered with a smile. That’s the kind of disruption I’ll take any day,” smiled Sarah, as she reminisced on the experience. By this time, the cares and concerns of daily life felt like a distant memory, and we still had a session at Mokara Spa to look forward to.

MOKARA SPA: THE GRAND FINALE
That afternoon, we slipped into a state of complete Zen at Mokara Spa. While there are many benefits to an infrared sauna, relaxation was at the top of our list. The effects of the penetrating infrared light and the intense yet soothing heat were the perfect combination to set the tone for a full-body massage. After 15 minutes in the sauna, we were greeted by our massage therapists, who guided us to a private room and walked us through a few simple questions to create a personalized experience. Enhancements included aroma therapy, CBD treatment, pain relief, and more. “Mokara means ‘free’ in Marathi,” Gerry had told us earlier. “And that’s really what we want people to feel here—unrestrained, unwound, and totally relaxed.” Mission accomplished. We finished our spa experience sipping champagne in plush robes, already scheming about when we could come back.
OMNI INTERLOCKEN: BROOMFIELD’S BEST-KEPT SECRET (UNTIL NOW)
For those who prefer action to relaxation, the Omni offers world-class golf, fitness classes with Rocky Mountain Sports Club, and guided outdoor adventures through Colorado Wilderness Rides and Guides. “This place has been reimagined,” said Gerry. “We’re so much more than just this big hotel off of 36. We want to be top-of-mind for Broomfielders looking for an escape—whether it’s Sunday brunch, golf, a wedding, a business retreat, an outdoor adventure, or just a much-needed staycation.” Escape is exactly what we found. No TSA lines. No sketchy and awkward rideshare experiences. Just luxury, comfort, and convenience with a distinct local twist. It was everything we needed—and then some. Would we do it again? In a heartbeat. Although next time, we may consider hiring a car service. Because when you’re fifteen minutes from paradise, why not arrive in style?

F ROM H A I L STOR M TO H A R MON Y Navigating roof replacement with our local guides at Reitz Roofing
“Oh, oh, that doesn’t look good,” Anita Carlino said to herself as she walked from her house to the shed. This morning’s cloudless, piercing blue sky was now dark gray, almost black, and the clouds tumbled over each other like a load of clothes in a dryer. The cars were safely in the garage, but there wasn’t time to cover the flower beds or tomato plants. The hail
slammed down hard just minutes after she was back inside the house. The aftermath was ugly. Luckily, everything that was damaged or destroyed could be repaired or replaced. The journey of recovery would not be easy, but with the right people at her side, she knew she would get through it. After speaking with her

“Find someone with a strong reputation for quality work and customer care. Working with Reitz Roofing gave me total confidence from start to finish , and that peace of mind is invaluable.” — A N I TA C A R L I N O
insurance agent, she started collecting roofing quotes. Storm chasers in big, beautiful trucks with out-of-state license plates soon knocked on her door. She got referrals from friends. But in the end, she felt most comfortable contracting with Reitz Roofing, a company that her real estate team had been referring to their clients for over fifteen years. It was an easy choice. “Reitz Roofing’s bid was substantially lower than the others. More importantly, I know from experience that they are honest, reliable, and consistently professional,” explains Anita. How do you navigate the complex web of red tape and emotions involved in a roof replacement? Find a roofing contractor who has experience navigating the process to make the journey easier. That begins with an honest roof inspection, followed by a detailed report and a price quote. If the insurance company blocks the path, a good roofer will know how to clear it. The maze of roofing materials, styles, and colors is ever-changing, so it’s okay to lean on the contractor to guide you through the twists and turns, ensuring your home looks great. “Keep your eyes out for dangers along the way,” advises Brandon Reitz, Vice President of Reitz Roofing, “like giving a roofer a large deposit before any materials are delivered or work is performed. Make sure a roofing permit is pulled, and don’t pay in full before the roof is completed and then inspected by the city.” On the big day, make sure that your vehicles are parked down the street, your driveway is clear, and the
area surrounding your home is safe from falling debris, because your trail leader needs space to clear a path to your beautiful roof. Some people get a kick out of the cacophonous beat of hammers, boots, and nail guns on the roof, so they stay inside the house as the old roof is removed and the new one is installed. Others just want to see the finished project and leave for the day—different journeys for different people. And even though your roofing adventure is done, protect yourself from a lingering malady that could present itself months or even years down the line. “Without proper warranty information or ways to contact your roofing contractor, you could find yourself abandoned if the roof fails,” reminds Brandon. “Don’t choose a roofer based on price alone,” recommends Anita. “Find someone with a strong reputation for quality work and customer care. Working with Reitz Roofing gave me total confidence from start to finish, and that peace of mind is invaluable.” The journey from a hailstorm to a new roof can be a challenging few months, but with a little homework and the help of a trusted local contractor, you can minimize the stress. Before you know it, the noise fades, the dust settles, and you’re standing beneath a roof that’s stronger—and more beautiful—than before. So go ahead and soak up the summer sun, listen to the rumble of afternoon storms, and rest knowing your home is ready for whatever comes next. It’s part of what makes Broomfield a wonderful place to live.

HOW BCORE BRINGS MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT TO THE FRONT LINES ARTICLE BY JULIE WALKER
28
M EN TA L WE LLBE IN G | LOCAL SE RVICE S
He didn’t expect anyone to understand. The arguments at home, the emotions he couldn’t name—he just wanted the noise to stop. The police officers arrived, and then a clinician. But the clinician didn’t bring judgment—just calm. For the first time in a long time, he felt seen. Not punished, not dismissed, but heard. And in that moment, with someone truly listening, something shifted: maybe he wasn’t alone in this after all. What happens when someone in crisis, like in the previous real example, doesn’t need a jail cell or a hospital bed, but simply someone to listen? With an estimated 20-38% of 911 calls involving mental health or substance use issues, these situations account for a significant and growing part of law enforcement’s work. Yet officers aren’t always trained to handle these situations, which can limit the options and outcomes. That’s where Broomfield’s Co-Response (BCORE) comes in. This innovative mental health co-responder program pairs clinicians with police officers to respond to calls involving mental health issues. Instead of defaulting to emergency room visits or arrests, BCORE provides individuals in crisis with appropriate mental health services and resources. Compassion, one of the Broomfield
Police Department’s core values, is at the heart of the BCORE program. It shows compassion for its police officers by easing the burden of handling mental health care alone and for the community in moments of need. When a 911 call comes in, police ensure the scene is safe before a BCORE clinician steps in to offer immediate mental health support. It’s a powerful shift in approach that brings compassion into crisis response, provides the right kind of support in the moment it’s needed, and challenges outdated perceptions of responses to mental health. Kurt Wederquist, Commander of the Community Services Division, explains, “This program enables us to change the negative narrative that ‘if the cops come, someone will get arrested or hurt.’ Instead, we’re able to give individuals what they actually need in that moment. Maybe a person just needs to be heard. Whatever that looks like, we’re here.” That was the case for a teenager whose argument with a parent led to a 911 call. The situation revealed the teen had been struggling with significant emotional distress. After speaking with the family, the BCORE clinician assessed that the teen was not in immediate danger of harming themselves.
“Instead of defaulting to ER visits or arrests, BCORE offers the right help at the right time.”

Together, they created a safety plan for the night, including locking away sharp objects, setting boundaries, identifying coping strategies and establishing steps for follow-up care. No hospitalization, no arrest. Just the right help at the right time. “This is the kind of support BCORE is built to provide,” said clinician supervisor Stephanie Van Jacobs, LCSW, LAC. “We want people to know it’s okay to struggle—everyone has mental health, and sometimes that means needing help.” Fellow clinician Stephanie Cukrowicz, LCSW added, “Sometimes, just sitting on someone’s couch and talking is the first step.” By meeting people where they are—both physically and emotionally—the team aims to replace shame with empowerment, making it easier for community members to seek help without fear or stigma. Over time, the bond between clinicians and officers has grown into a true partnership. “When they’re in a tough situation, officers can now say, ‘Let me introduce you to my friend who can help,’” said Brandon Kozloff, LCSW, LAC, a BCORE clinician. “That can change a whole call.” Brandon shared a story about a man in crisis who repeatedly called 911, not for a crime but because he was struggling with alcohol addiction. After building trust with BCORE and the resources they gave him, the man got into a detox program. Weeks later, he texted Brandon, “Thank you for your life-saving work.”
BCORE: PARTNERS IN MENTAL HEALTH RESPONSE
Since launching in 2018, BCORE has supported over 4,000 people through on-scene mental health care. Over the last eight months, they have responded to nearly 400 calls, averaging around 50 per month. BCORE partners with multiple agencies, including West Pines, Broomfield Health and Human Services, Clinica, North Metro Fire, Centennial Peaks and more. To reach BCORE, call them at 303-438-6400 (non-emergency line) and ask for the on-duty clinician. For general questions or messages, call 983-888-6700. Clinicians are available until 9:30 p.m. and will respond as soon as they can. For emergencies, always call 911. Do you have lived experience with mental health? Your story matters. Use it to make a difference by serving on BCORE’s advisory board. Your voice could help shape the future of crisis response. Learn more about BCORE at www.broomfield.org
